The Goron Chief of Old

Link finally remembers his old friend Daruk, and allies with the young Yunobo to combat Rudania. Elsewhere in Hyrule, a dark power gathers.

Tropes:

  • Action Dad: Daruk confirms that he has sons in this chapter.
  • Adaptational Explanation: Daruk never says what has him concerned when Death Mountain starts trembling. Here, he claims that he suspects Igneo Taluses may have returned after having been extinct for centuries.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Subverted. Bludo is at first skeptical of Link's identity, and then remembers that he's in a world with a giant boar-shaped abomination, and giant magitek devices, so life-extension for a Hylian is nothing, though he still questions Link's identity until he describes the moment he and Daruk first met.
  • Battle Cry: "For Master Kohga!" is one for the Yiga Clan.
  • Barrier Warrior: Yunobo can use his shielding power offensively, one of his abilities being blasting it outwards to cause a shockwave.
  • Cowardly Lion: Yunobo is a timid guy who's afraid of monsters, but Link reminds him that he is still the guy who pushes back Rudania, and with that he's able to fight back and vanquish a Black Moblin on his own, and most easily of the three no less since all he does is blast his shield outwards.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Bludo's back is still in agony despite having the painkillers, forcing Link to go help Yunobo himself. Not that Link's complaining about this.
  • Determinator: Barta for the second time has managed to sprint across the sand in the desert to save a life/lives.
  • Eat Dirt, Cheap: Gorons eat rocks, and Daruk comments on the delectable-looking rocks around the mountains, and Link and Daruk discuss a time when Link ate a rock roast...which Link says was killer on his teeth.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: As a Goron, Daruk says rock-based version expressions and idioms. He mentions that Zelda "can't see the range for the peaks", or as we say in real life, "can't see the forest for the trees". The only reason Link understands Daruk is because he knows Daruk well already.
  • Manchild: Daruk sees his Divine Beast as a toy, much to Link's fright.
  • The Matchmaker: Daruk encouraged Link to pursue a relationship with Mipha, and is now doing the same only this time with Zelda.
  • Oh, Crap!: Riju's reaction to Barta's report about the Yiga's planned attack makes Riju react in utter horror.
  • Psychic Link: Daruk and Link have a discussion about how the Divine Beasts don't actually have a cockpit of any sorts, and the "pilot" manipulates the Divine Beast like they would a limb, meaning they each have this with their Divine Beast.
  • Race Against the Clock: Riju sends three Rito women to fly out across Hyrule to deliver warnings to the other settlements in Hyrule to save them from annihilation when the sun sets.
  • Smack on the Back: Daruk hits Link hard on his back, congratulating him on becoming the princess's appointed knight. Link comments on how Daruk nearly snapped his spin in two.
  • Shipper on Deck: Daruk clearly thinks that Link and Zelda would make a cute couple and says it all without verbally saying it.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Yunobo is Daruk's descendant and also has his power of shielding, Daruk's Protection.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Cerako's repairs show up here. She fires a sphere into the air that she shoots at and explodes to get rid of a giant flood of magma bombs erupting from Death Mountain. With her new weapons, she also can personally fight monsters with more than just interference and a blaster.
  • Verbal Backspace: Link realizes that he implied unintentionally that he regrets his relationship with Mipha, but very quickly explains himself that he's still grateful for the relationship, but he's just cursed with the knowledge of knowing that his daughter will outlive him by such a degree that he'll never see her grow up.
