The Awakening

A knight named Link awakens in a cave with no memory aside from his name, and throughout the day begins to learn about who and where is.

Tropes:

  • Barbarian Long Hair: Link's hair is incredibly long, complementing his beard and muscular build.
  • Bag of Holding: The Sheikah Slate is explicitly revealed to be able to carry all of Link's inventory without limit, and instantly transforms his clothing and weaponry by his selection and command, justifying Link having a Hyperspace Arsenal.
  • Braids of Action: The old man combs and braids Link's long hair for him.
  • Establishing Series Moment: This entire chapter really, but Link's fight with a Bokoblin does not result in Bloodless Carnage, making it clear this is going to be a much less lighthearted story than the original game.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Link notes something is crawling on the volcanic mountain in the distance.
    • The old man's voice is described as being very posh and eloquent, and he also evades talking about himself. The little he reveals is that he had a daughter with the initials Z.B.H which are inscribed on a comb with a blue floral design on it.
  • Heroic Build: Link is described as being very muscular and ripped.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Link has a thick beard that is described as being enough to put a lumberjack to shame.
  • Mr. Exposition: The old man tells Link about the Great Plateau and its history with Hyrule. He also tells Link all about Calamity Ganon.
  • Oh, Crap!: Link is frightened when he sees something crawling on the volcano in the distance.
  • Reflexive Response: As Link gets to fight some weak monsters, he realizes that he intuitively knows how to fight. It gets to the point where he inadvertently triggers his power of speed.
  • Scenery Porn: Written example. The chapter adapts the famous opening scene in the game where Link looks out over Hyrule from the cliff by using extensive descriptions of the landscape Link is seeing.
  • Telepathy: The female voice speaking to Link is not from someone with him, but from someone implied to be in the distant castle.
  • Troll: The old man Link meets pretends to be upset about Link stealing an apple, but reveals that he couldn't help but pull Link's leg.
  • Wham Line: The female voice guiding Link reveals that he's been asleep for 100 years.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: Link wakes up in a place he doesn't recognize without a memory aside from his own name.
