Florence Nightingale is at work in Crimea in 1854.The British army is charging straight into a conflict they cannot win.

Florence is supposed to be taking care of a new hospital in, but an "angel" by the name of Thomas Hector Schofield. Without the Doctor and Ace by his side, Hex cannot sit by idly in a warzone. But times are harsh, and war is hell, especially when you have no paperwork proving who you are, and spies are in the ranks...


  • An Arm and a Leg: It's war.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: A civilian orders a soldier to aim a gun at the Doctor. The Doctor outbluffs him by shouting at the soldier soldiers shouldn't take orders from civilians and to take aim at the Irish news reporter, Mr. Russel. The Doctor wins.
  • Call-Back: The Doctor is taking Hex on this trip to make him feel better about the events on Bliss so that he can feel useful.
  • Call-Forward: The spare key behind the cubbyhole is mentioned.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The sedatives Hex accidentally takes from the TARDIS. As well as the Hypersonic scalpel.
  • Distress Call: Hex feigns one using a Hypersonic scalpel.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Ace has one when she realizes she can read Russian meaning the TARDIS isn't destroyed.
  • Have We Met Yet?: The Doctor actually pops in later than he's already been in these events.
  • Historical Domain Character: Florence Nightingale, Lev Tolstoy and William Russel.
  • Idiot Ball: Hex stays behind knowing fully well Ace and the Doctor are considered Mistaken for Spies while they leave him behind for a bit, and yet he still namedrops them.
  • Incoming Ham: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!
  • Mistaken for Spies: The Doctor, par for the course. On both sides for the conflict.
  • Narrator: Parts to story are retelling of the events of the wars and skirmishes.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Hex keeps getting mistaken for a doctor, when he insists he's "just a nurse".
  • Officer and a Gentleman: The arresting officer, Tolsoy, that finds the Doctor and Ace. Ace winds up in a river with a headwound and he dives in after her, despite being a suspected enemy.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Hex finds the TARDIS (After it had just left with the Doctor and Ace in it), it seemed to have lost all power and turned into an ordinary policebox.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Thomas drugs Robert Holmes when he has the former in custody.
  • Stable Time Loop: The Doctor purposefully waits as a prisoner until he is informed a report has been sent that made him investigate why he was imprisoned to begin with.
  • Techno Babble: Why the TARDIS vanished, how Ace's blood and a key worked as a remote control, it all makes sense... To the Doctor.
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: The trio is separated. Hex is in a bunch of hospital barracks, Ace is imprisoned, and the Doctor is a hostage to the Tsar.
  • Time Skip: The story skips ahead a couple of weeks here and there, provided with some narration about the war.
  • War Is Hell: The Doctor and Ace nearly immediately get blown up by a cannonade, and Ace suffers a near lethal wound.
