Basic Trope: Characters speak casually while in danger.
- Straight: Emerald, The Heroine Diamond and her Love Interest Jasper’s trusted ally, casually makes a witty comment about the war between The Federation and The Empire that they’re in.
- Exaggerated:
- Emperor Sapphire’s forces are destroying many villages just for fun and are still at large, the members of The Empire are winning the war against The Federation, the imperial soldiers are attacking the island Emerald, Diamond, and Jasper live in, a nearby volcano has a massive eruption, Jasper gets killed in a fight with General Topaz, an Eldritch Abomination has been summoned, a Zombie Apocalypse is going on, and the coffee machine broke. Despite this, Emerald reacts to pretty much all of these problems with “Hmmm... This could be a problem.”
- Everyone is speaking casually as it was another day in the office for them whilst being locked in an extremely brutal and horrific war.
- Downplayed:
- Emerald speaks casually despite the fact that he and his teammates are in serious danger per se, but rather in a nervous tone, implying that he’s aware of the danger he’s in.
- Emerald speaks casually when Diamond and Jasper are angrily scolding him.
- Justified:
- Emerald is either The Stoic, a Deadpan Snarker, or a Stoic Deadpan Snarker.
- Emerald is a Cloudcuckoolander with Blue-and-Orange Morality, so he finds being in danger just another “Sunday” for him.
- Emerald has been though so much shit to the point where this is the usual for him.
- Emerald is a Knight in Jaded Armor who has known from the start that he and his teammates are going to lose to Lord Sapphire, so there’s no point in making such a big deal out of it.
- Emerald tends to be a very apathetic person and/or has Nerves of Steel.
- Inverted:
- Diamond rescues Emerald from being killed by Emperor Sapphire. This is how Emerald reacts.
Emerald: Oh, she actually saved me? Well that’s cool I guess… - Subverted:
- Emerald casually makes a witty comment about the attack of The Empire, but when Jasper is slain by one of Emperor Sapphire’s soldiers, Emerald now realizes the seriousness of the situation and begins to panic…
- Emerald casually makes a witty comment about the attack of The Empire… Because Emerald has already gunned down a few mooks and is not afraid to do it again.
- Double Subverted: But it turns out that this time, the heroes are facing Elite Mooks and/or the number of mooks are so large, they’re basically unstoppable. Nevertheless, Emerald still manages to make witty cracks about this.
- Parodied: It’s The End of the World as We Know It and Emerald still manages to keep a straight face, but when he’s losing at Chess, he has a heart attack about this.
- Zig-Zagged:
- “Emperor Sapphire’s forces are attacking us? Meh… So Diamond, how was your day- Oh, Crap! They killed Jasper! You Bastard! Haha, just kidding! Anyways Diamond, so what should we have a conversation about now? OH FUCK! THERE'S A BOMB! Wait, it's already defused. Maybe we should have a conversation about…. Socks? Yeah, socks! So what are your favorite types of socks? I like white socks with blue stripes! Speaking of socks, I actually like knitting socks! It’s very fun and-Wait a minute… A METEOR IS HEADING FOR EARTH! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! Aaand it missed. Phe- Wait… Are those zombies?”
- Depending on his mood (Or The Writer), Emerald will either engage in this trope or act with proper concern in serious situations.
- Averted: Nobody talks casually in the face in danger.
- Enforced:
- The authors wanted to slip another joke so why not have Emerald suffer the inverse of a Comical Overreaction?
- The authors didn’t want to alienate the audience with the cynicism of the story, so they wanted to make it funny via adding this trope to the plotline.
- Lampshaded:Jasper: “Emerald seems awfully casual about this fight.”Diamond: “That's the closest he'll get to showing an enemy he's afraid.”
- Invoked: Lady Jade removes the ability to panic whenever something bad happens from Emerald’s brain.
- Exploited: Ruby gets a recording of Emerald's laissez-faire attitude in battle and presents it to General Hangthemallandletgodsortitout as proof of dereliction of duty.
- Defied:
- “Ah forget it. Ahem… HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT. OH MY GOSH! THERE IS LIKE WHAT? TWENTY FIVE, FUCKING THOUSAND SOLDIERS ATTACKING US! WHAT THE HELL IS MY PROBLEM?! HOLY SHIT! WHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING?! AAAAAAAAAAAAA-”
- The writer of "The Last Stand of Private Diamond" absolutely refuses to utilize this kind of conversation when requested to add it by the executives, thinking that it would ruin the drama.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: “Yeah, I don't think most people in real life would react to danger the way these characters in this movie do. They'd be like what? Screaming and running away instead of making the 500th snarky comment they’ve made in the first hour and 30 minutes of the movie.
- Implied: The Federation and The Empire are at war, and two unnamed members of The Federation/The Empire are seen having a chat with each other with some coffee.
- Played For Laughs:
- It’s The End of the World as We Know It and Emerald is cracking Black Comedy jokes that is so over-the-top that it gets funny.
- Emerald engages in a Snark-to-Snark Combat match with Emperor Sapphire and his right hand man, while their teammates/enemies are engaging in a brutal resistance.
- Gallows Humor
- Played For Drama: Emerald reacts this way because he's used to such horrible things happening to him.
- Played For Horror:
- Emerald talks like this because he is The Sociopath.
- That one dude right there in the corner who was already going nuts because of the stress takes the perceived fact Emerald does not gives a damn about their fates as a Rage Breaking Point and kills him.
- Deconstructed: Emerald talking casually in something as brutal and horrific as war could likely give off the implication that he has No Sympathy for everyone’s current situation. Because of this, Diamond decides that Emerald does not frankly give a shit about their suffering, and so both she and Jasper disavow their friendship with Emerald as a result.
