Body Wipe
aka: Walking Away Shot

Go To

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_wipe.png

A once-common wipe used for Scene Transitions, the Body Wipe is an In Camera Effect when the camera zooms in on a person to the point of that person obscuring the whole screen before the film cuts to somewhere else. The faster the person goes, the more intimidating this can be to the audience, since it feels like the character is running (or falling, where it may feel like Camera Abuse) out of the screen.

Variants:

  • A common method is for someone to walk into the camera and then cut to them walking out of it again somewhere else (that is, the same thing in reverse), showing that they have travelled between their body filling the screen and their body moving away from it again. This uses the Match Cut technique if the person is wearing the same colour on both sides of their body, meaning that the transition doesn't involve sudden changes or cuts on the screen.
  • The camera can be placed in a chair that someone then sits in. Expect a squelching sound to occur as the screen fills up with their body, emphasising either that yes, this scene is over and done and squished into history, or the fatness of the character.
  • Played for Laughs, the camera might hit the person and trigger a reaction from them instead of transitioning to another shot.

A Super-Trope to Eat the Camera, in which the screen fills up with someone's mouth. Compare Fly-at-the-Camera Ending, when a similar effect ends the movie. Not to be confused with any Bathroom Tropes.

    Films — Live-Action
  • This is done once in Annie Get Your Gun when she's wearing her red dress. She runs into and out of the camera to show that she's crossed the showground.
  • Used frequently in Aquaman when transiting in and out of flashbacks.
  • Utilized in Alfred Hitchcock's Rope where a body filling up the screen was used a few times to cover a change in film; mostly someone's back. It's presented as one continuous take but the cameras of the time could only handle enough film for 10 minutes of shooting, so that's how much they shot at a time.

  • The third variation appears in Spaceballs — a slow, dramatic zoom on Lord Helmet goes too far and knocks him over.
  • Similarly the first Scary Movie has the camera zoom in on Cindy only to hit her on the head and her pushing it away afterwards.
  • In the opening credits of Spy Hard, one transition is done by the camera zooming into "Weird Al" Yankovic's nostril until it fills the screen.
  • The Reveal of The Woman in the Window is done by the camera zooming in on Edward G. Robinson as he falls asleep in a chair, until there's a tight closeup on his face, then zooming out to show him in a completely different place, as the All Just a Dream ending plays out.

  • Used very artfully to advance the series to the real-world present in "Bringing Up Baby", the fourth-season premiere of Modern Family. In the penultimate scene, Gloria has just told her 65-year-old husband Jay that she's pregnant by him, on the day after the events of the previous season's finale (which had aired four months earlier). Expecting a negative reaction, he instead tells her it's the best birthday present he's gotten and the two embrace. The camera pans around them, coming close enough that their bodies momentarily fill the screen... and when it's past them, they're in a different house and we see and hear things that make us realize at least three months have passed: Gloria is now showing, Phil has grown a beard he had talked about earlier in the episode, and Cam, Lily and Mitchell have been on a vacation to Britain and back as well as having gotten the kitten they tried to adopt earlier in the episode.
