Fanfic / The Masked Toon Singer

Go To

The Masked Toon Singer is a fanfic based on the popular game show, The Masked Singer, created by HeavyHitterConner It follows the same rules as the show: sixteen characters (or a differing number depending on the season) from various series all compete with one another in a singing contest in hopes of being the last singer standing to win the golden mask. However, there's a twist. All of the singers are wearing costumes that hide who they are. Whenever someone is eliminated, they have to unmask before leaving. The show is hosted by Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic for every single season other than the first half of the fourth and Chudd Chudders from Skatoony for the first half of the fourth and co-host for the following seasons and judged by SpongeBob SquarePants, Shrek, Starfire from Teen Titans (2003), and (starting from season two) Shantae, with Wario from Super Mario Bros. serving as a producer. Currently, there have been six seasons.

The Masked Toon Singer contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • In the canon show, the Robot was the first person gone. Here, they make it all the way to fourth place.
    • Same applies to the Bananas, who make it to second place. The original Banana was the tenth one out.
    • Broccoli downplays this, as they only get one place higher then then their canon counterpart, going from 7th to 6th
    • Egg also downplays this, going from the first eliminated to the third one eliminated.
    • Canonical Dragon was the first one out. Here, they make it to 9th place and had there not been three new Wild Cards, two of which advance past her, would have been in 7th.
    • Downplayed again by Kangaroo, who barely improves like Broccoli, reaching 7th rather than 8th.
    • Unicorn sees a smaller jump up in rankings, going from seventh place to fifth place.
    • Phoenix gets a big improvement, as rather than place thirteenth, he places second.
    • Baby is another singer to see a small improvement, as she goes from eleventh to tenth.
    • Hydra is another small improvement, going from tenth to eighth.
    • Cyclops sees yet another big improvement, going from the third one out to fourth place.
    • Bride sees a massive improvement, going from someone who only last two episodes to the season's winner.
  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • In canon, Tree, Astronaut, Kangaroo, and Phoenix were all normal competitors. Here, they're Wild Cards.
    • Kangaroo is a group costume, as he has a small little Joey who sings along with him.
    • Hydra had two people inside of him in the canon show. He only has one contestant in him this time.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Wild Cards didn't appear in canon until the 5th season. Here, they make their debut in the third.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Lord Dominator, who in canon remained an unrepentant villain, is revealed to be from a universe where she reformed.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • In canon, the Bee made it to third place. Here, they are the second one gone. This trope is zigzagged however because they were not eliminated normally.
    • The Rabbit only made it to 8th when their canon counterpart made it to fourth.
    • The Monster downplays this. Their canon counterpart was the winner of the first season, while here, they only make it to second place.
    • The Chameleon came in third in canon, while here they fail to make it to the merge.
    • The canon Lion made it to the semifinals, ultimately finishing in fifth place. Here, they fail to make the team merge.
    • Both Astronaut and Tree placed sixth in their respective season, but these ones are eliminated straight away as wild cards.
    • If you can believe it, Elephant does even worse here than the canon one, as rather than be fourth out, she's the very first one gone.
    • The Sun was the winner of season 4. Here, however, they are the first one out of their group.
    • Compared to his canon counterpart, Bull does a little worse, as they go from runner up to fifth place.
    • In canon, Popcorn placed sixth. Here, they are the first one sent home from their group and the third one gone overall.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Much like the main show, there are several examples of animals being colors you will most likely never find in real life.
    • While Chameleon somewhat downplays this, considering a real life chameleon's color changing abilities, it's still very rare to find one that is pink and yellow.
    • Rabbit is purple and yellow.
    • Hummingbird is bright blue.
    • Monkey is pink.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Moon, Bouquet, Disco Ball, Top Hat, Rain Cloud, Blob, Clock Tower, and Soap. Disco Ball's true identity, Toaster, counts as well.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Egg, Spaghetti, Broccoli, the Bananas, Orange, Mango, Birthday Cake, and Fast Food.
  • Author Avatar: On occasion, HeavyHitterConnor will appear on the show themselves.
  • Audience Participation: Readers vote for who they liked the best, much like the real show, with whoever gets the least going home.
  • Back for the Finale:
    • All of the eliminated singers come back during the finale episodes for a group song.
    • Season four's finale contains another example as every past contestant (excluding Lord Dominator, Tiana and Toaster) return, led by Agent Gluntz and Miss Tarantula in order to hunt down Wario and Charles LePuck after they steal the Golden Mask Plaque.
  • Back from the Dead: Elephant turns out to be Berri, who died in her source material. Her appearance is hand waved as her saying she regenerated.
  • Badass Decay: In-Universe version. As Pinkie herself points out, the last time Sunset was on a Masked Singer show, she was the winner. Here, she is unmasked well before the finals.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Played with. While the winner of Season Six does hail from Team Bad, the actual winner (Luz Noceda) is actually a hero.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • The Cat first appears to be a solo singer, only for their partner to arrive just as they are about to begin singing, revealing they are a duo: The Kittens.
    • After the Professor is unmasked, it builds up like his encore is going to be his last song. Instead, it ends up being Boys of the Chorus.
    • During the finals of Season 5, Chad starts to apologize to Bride, making it seem like she was in the bottom two, only to then reveal that she's actually the winner.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Chicken claims to be a contestant who was on another version of the show previously. Gluntz appeared on another version where contestants dress as Pokémon.
    • Downplayed with Traffic Cones. Timon and Pumbaa had appeared in another version of the show, but they didn’t bring this up.
    • Also downplayed with Professor. Bugs previously participated on the same show as Gluntz, but doesn’t bring it up.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Spider aka Grim attempted to hide the fact they was on the show from Billy and Mandy, only for the latter to figure it out and forcibly unmask them, eliminating them from the show.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper:
    • Plankton's attempt to cheat by sending a robot to compete in his place is quickly found out and he is kicked off the show.
    • Similarly, Courtney tries to get the author to give her a leg up via several favors, and later Blackmail, so when the author reveals this, she is disqualified.
  • Chirping Crickets: How the audience reacts following the unmasking of the Ghost, otherwise known as Daffy Duck. Daffy responds by chewing out the audience for eliminating him.
  • Christmas Episode: Episode 9 of season three has a Christmas theme, with most of the songs being Christmas themed, all of the clues being based around presents, holiday icon Jack Skellington appearing as a guest judge and two Christmas themed wildcards debuting.
  • Cliffhanger: Episode four of season four ends with Moneybags freaking out and getting ready to unmask himself, but not revealing who it is or his reasons until the next episode.
  • Composite Character:
    • Unikitty's clues relate to both The LEGO Movie and her spinoff.
    • Spyro's clues are related to all three of his different iterations, with his design being the classic version.
    • While Minnie Mouse's clues all allude to her many appearances, her actual appearance is based off her design in Mickey Mouse (2013).
    • Downplayed by Chef, who is confirmed to be his main series counterpart, but has a few clues from Total Dramarama.
  • Crack Fic: To put it bluntly, this fic matches the show in how wacky it can get with who is under each mask and what they are all singing. For example, season one alone has a final 3 consisting of Lord Dominator dressed as a volcano, Lori Loud dressed as a monster and Steven Universe dressed as a moon.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Whomever the winner of Season 3 was got so many votes that the author was forced to shut down the polls moments after the chapter launched. It was later revealed to be Black Sheep.
  • Cutting Off the Branches:
    • In this universe, it’s revealed that Far Cry 4 ended with Ajay assuming control of Kyrat, destroying the Golden Path, and allowing Pagan to leave instead of shooting down his helicopter.
    • In this universe, it’s revealed that the Police Cadets were the winners of The Ridonculous Race.
  • Distaff Counterpart: The Lady Dog costume is described as looking exactly like the Dog, only more feminine.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Shrek was very annoyed by how cute Lion and Hummingbird's mask jam clues were and outright calls Black Sheep "disgusting". As payback, Joke-O-Lantern shows him the Soap costume, which, being an orge, scares him and leads to him being humiliated by the other judges when they learn what he was so afraid off. It’s extra funny when the person under the mask turns out to be Fiona, Shrek’s very own wife, although he apparently knew it was her from the start.
  • Driving Question: From season six, it's who stole the Golden Mask Plaque.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Considering that's she's been a series main stay since season two, Shantae's absence from the panel in season one may confuse newer readers who are looking back at older seasons.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jack is a mercenary who was willing to enter Death Watch for money, but even he thinks Charles LePuck is a greedy asshole.
  • Exact Words: Moneybags reveals his reason for being on the show is because he wanted to surprise a friend who had been on the show before. Note that he never said friend was a former contestant as Earl's friend Chudd Chudders had been a guest judge and was currently the main host.
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: The concept actually appears as a costume in season 4.
  • Foreshadowing: Naturally, there's are tons from the clues. So much, in fact, that it has its own page.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: The judges consist of SpongeBob and Shrek (male) and Shantae and Starfire (female).
  • Gender Flip:
    • Rabbit, Monster, Chameleon, Broccoli, Dragon, Astronaut, Elephant, Cyclops, Baby, and Bride are female singers in this version.
    • Lion, Bee, Kangaroo, Phoenix, Popcorn, and Butterfly are male singers in this version.
  • Gender-Separated Ensemble Episode: Since the final 8 of season three are all female, the episode is played up as a girls night out, with male judges Spongebob and Shrek being swapped out for Sandy and previous winner Lord Dominator respectively.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: A few of the contestants are villains in their home series. It’s revealed that this doesn’t apply to Lord Dominator, as she’s from a universe where she reformed.
  • Graceful Loser: Much like the canon show, everyone sent home normally is very chill and talk about how much they enjoyed their time.
  • Group Hug: After Panda is revealed to be the winner of the second season, they are joined on stage by Ice Bear and Grizz. One of these ensues.
  • Halloween Episode: Episode 5 of season 3 is Halloween themed, with all the songs having a spooky theme, along with the clue of the episode being either a trick (a picture meant to freak out at least one judge) or a treat (a gift for the judges)
  • Iconic Sequel Character: Shantae only joins the cast in the second season, yet you'd be hard pressed to find a reader who can picture the series without her, since her presence was what brought the series more in line with the real one by having a four person judge panel.
  • In Another Man's Shoes: Following their unmasking, Great White otherwise known as Chris McLean admits that now that he has been a contestant on an elimination show, he admits that he understands how his contestants felt after losing.
  • In Memoriam: In universe example. The true identity of the Firefly (Tiana) admits that they picked the costume in memory of Ray, her firefly companion from her film who was killed in the climax.
  • Irony:
    • The episode after Ryuko is eliminated, her sister, Satsuki is the guest judge. Icing on the cake? Satsuki didn't realize that it was her sister until she was unmasked.
    • The toon in the Soap costume is revealed to be Fiona, an orge aka, a creature who prides themselves on how dirty they are.
    • The person in the Lady Dog costume is Hana Uzaki, who is rather well known for her love of cats.
  • Jerkass: Mandy admits that she unmasked Grim just to prove that they can't pull one over her.
  • Living Legend: Much like the real show, there is at least one legendary figure hidden among the ranks of each season.
    • Season One: Ghost (Daffy Duck)
    • Season Two: Spaghetti (Woody)
    • Season Three: Sumo (Minnie Mouse), Cerebrus (Spyro)
    • Season Four: Tortoise (Eeyore)
    • Season Five: Professor (Bugs Bunny)
    • Season Six: Nose (Pete), Kinkajou (Winnie the Pooh), Trash (Charlie Brown).
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: Characters can come from just about anywhere.
  • Mean Mask, Nice Actor In Season 6, despite having the name Team Bad, many of them are actually good guys. Examples being Kinkajou as Winnie The Pooh, Trash as Charlie Brown, and Feathered Serpent as Luz Noceda.
  • Mix And Match Creature: The Thingamajiggy costume, along with being a fusion of the Monster and Thingamajig costumes from the real show, it also has a horse hoof, an eagle leg, a gorilla arm, lizard claws, a deer antler, a bull horn and an octopus tentacle as a tail.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Shantae, after taking a break from her hosting duties to attend a welcoming party for Kayuza getting into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, disguises herself as a Pony In Black and returns to the show after surprising her fellow judges, much like Nick Cannon did when he competed as the Bulldog before getting unmasked.
      • In the same boat, Birthday Cake winds up being both versions of Pinkie in the exact same scenario as Bulldog.
    • Also, the contestant formerly known as Universe changes their name to "Otherworlder", similar to Robopine originally being called Porcupine before revealing the name change during his first entrance.
    • Much like Beach Ball in season six, both Astronaut and Tree fails to join the contest as wild cards.
      • Speaking of Wildcards, just like in Season 5, after one of them is eliminated in an Non-Gameplay Elimination, two more follow suit in legitimate eliminations. However, there are still four more wildcards to be revealed after this.
    • Moneybags eliminates themselves similar to Gremlin's self elimination.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Ten so far.
    • The first was the Bee aka Squidward who was eliminated after Spongebob followed him home, which gave away their identity to one of the judges.
    • The second was the Spider aka Grim who was forcibly unmasked by Mandy. This creates a double elimination as the Knight (Ryuko) had just been unmasked.
    • The third was the Wizard aka Plankton, who broke the rules by sending a robot to compete in their place.
    • The fourth was the Mole aka Brittany, who broke their foot during a practice and dropped out to recover.
    • The fifth was the Mango aka Lord Hater, after losing his temper at Wander, who was asking questions. This may have been the cause of the double elimination in the previous episode, resulting in the eliminations of the Lion (Baloo) and the Cerberus (Spyro).
    • The sixth was the Dragon aka Courtney who is forcibly eliminated after it comes out that she was trying to fix the game in her favor. This creates a double elimination, as Tree (Iris) had gotten the least amount of votes.
    • The seventh was the Moneybags aka The Earl, who quit after being unable to take the pressure of keeping his identity secret.
    • The eighth was the Pirate aka Jack Cayman, who was disqualified after attacking a guest panelist in response to him adding a fee to vote. It wouldn’t have mattered as he got the least votes anyway, with the implication that whoever placed lowest would have attacked the guest panelist.
    • The ninth was the Birthday Cake aka both versions of Pinkie Pie, as this was a near exact repeat of the Bulldog scenario from the main show. Fortunately, the night wasn’t a total waste as Bookcase aka WordGirl is voted off normally.
    • The tenth was Fast Food aka Chanda Besu and Elizabeth Wagner, who quit after a fight, causing them to fear that the contest was straining their friendship.
    • Smile, aka Glenn Martin subverts this, as they are found out by their family, but Pinkie decides to allow them to preform again before a final decision is made on if they are going home or not...only for it to not matter as Smile is eliminated that round anyways.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Cartoon characters are not the only characters who can compete on the show. Case in point, the first contestant to be unmasked is from an anime, and characters from movies, video games and comic books appear as well.
  • Not His Sled: Show of hands, how many people thought that the Monster would be the winner of season one? Instead, they fall just short, coming in second to the Volcano. It's also a woman behind the mask rather than a male singer.
  • Once a Season:
    • Each season, sans four, has a character from The Loud House franchise taking part in the season in some capacity.
    • Beginning with season two, each season has at least one character hailing from the Total Drama franchise competing.
    • There is least one Non-Gameplay Elimination.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: After being unmasked as Cerberus, Spyro notes that Cynder will never let him hear the end of it.
  • Palette Swap: Dragon is described to look like American Dragon but green and black.
  • Red Herring:
    • Many people thought that Smile was Lincoln Loud based on the clues relating to his family, when it was actually Glenn Martin.
    • Due to the Mouse Family consisting of a son and daughter costume, many at first assumed them to be a family with both a female and male child. Upon unmasking, it turns out that they were the Heelers, which has two daughters.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Spongebob was correct to assume that Plankton was competing, only he guessed they were Great White rather than the Wizard.
  • Samus Is a Girl: All of the judges were caught off guard when the Knight's singing voice revealed that it was a female singer (Ryuko) under the costume.
  • Side Bet: In the final six episode of season three, Brain reveals that Clock Tower and Black Sheep have one going, where whoever advances to the finale has to sing a song by a certain band. Upon reaching the finals, the band is revealed to be ABBA.
  • Sixth Ranger: Shantae joins the cast of judges at the beginning of season two.
  • Snipe Hunt: The Robot/Deadpool revealed that they were originally sent to the show in order to catch a villain, but realized quickly it was an excuse to get rid of them and decided to just have some fun on the show.
  • Sore Loser: Professor throws a tantrum before being unmasked. Justified, as Bugs is known to become very angry in the rare instances he loses.
  • Special Guest: The panel is often joined by another character who doesn’t compete. Thus far, this has consisted of Dr. Doofenshmirtz, Satsuki Kiryuin, Dante, Connie the Hormone Monstress, Nozomi Tojo, Mavis Dracula, Arlo Beauregard and Bertie, Heihachi Mishima, previous winners, Sandy Cheeks, Jack Skellington, Chudd Chudders, previous contestant Chris McLean, Archibald Asparagus, Twilight Sparkle, Charles Le Puck, Bugs Bunny, Princess Zelda, Puss in Boots, previous contestant Ash Ketchum, Anna, Kiara, Stanley Pines, Ruby Gillman, Aang, She Ra, Gru, Loona, Kipo Oak and Charlie Morningstar.
  • Too Important to Walk: The Clock Tower costume is rooted to a chair and, as such, the toon inside never stands while they sing at least until the Christmas Episode, where they finally stand up. Afterwards, they ditch the chair, claiming it was getting in the way. Oddly enough, the person under the mask, Jenny, can move well enough on her own anyway.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Black Sheep's trick is a picture of Shantae and Starfire getting their hair cut, freaking both girls out.
  • What Could Have Been: Five in universe examples.
    • Upon being unmasked, Vixen/Lucy admitted that they considered letting Charlie Brown compete, but decided against it out of fear that he would screw it up. Charlie Brown would later compete in Season 6. Ironically, he ended up placing higher than Lucy.
    • Volcano/Lord Dominator admitted that had she been sent to a Showdown, one of the songs she had planned to sing was Katy Perry's "Hot And Cold".
    • Pagan Min was offered either an elephant or a monkey costume, the latter of which he ended up picking. The elephant would later be used in season four.
    • After getting unmasked, Otherworlder, now revealed to be Candace Flynn, reveals that they were also offered a Phoenix costume. Again, the costume not picked was used in season four.
    • Whatchamawhozit/Mustache Girl revealed that her next song was going to be "Gangsta's Paradise".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Neither the other judges nor Pinkie are happy with SpongeBob for directly causing Squidward's elimination by stalking him.
  • Wild Card: They were introduced in season three and consist of:
    • Black Sheep
    • Mango
    • Soap
    • Astronaut
    • Tree
    • Angels
    • Kangaroo
    • Thingamajiggy
    • Bookshelf
    • Birthday Cake
    • Phoenix
    • Fire, Ice and Lightning
    • Sword
    • Bookshelf
    • UFO
  • Wrap-Up Song:
    • After unmasking himself, Moneybags, who is revealed to be The Earl, proceeds to sing "I'm Outta Here" from his home series.
    • Zigzagged with Baby. At first, Pibby does sing her goodbye song, but then decides to sing "Defying Gravity" instead.
    • Played straight with Behemoth. Bear wouldn't miss a chance to sing his Goodbye Song, after all.
    • Averted with Kinkajou. The cast does sing a song from The Book of Pooh, but instead of singing "Time to Close the Book", they sing the theme song. Then played straight when the whole of Team Bad sings it.
