Fan Fic: The Many Secret Origins Of Scootaloo
The Many Secret Origins of Scootaloo is a fanfiction on Fimfiction.Net written by defender2222. In this story, many of the show's ponies go out of their way to provide their different origin stories for our favorite pegasus filly for Twilight Sparkle's convenience. Most of them, it seems, are absolutely untrue or ridiculous and only succeed in making the unicorn go absolutely insane and repeatedly bang her head on tables. Many of the tales are either parodies of famous origin stories or mocking common story archetypes found in My Little Pony fanfiction.

It can be found here. The author has officially confirmed that this story, and its sequels, exist on Earth 22 of the MLP-Multiverse.

The God Squad, a spinoff starring Luna, Celestia, Cadence, Shining Armor and Tydal can be found here. A Christmas Episode was written, Happy Hearths Warming Eve, Twilight Sparkle. How Do You Shoot A Gun With Hooves?, due to it featuring Tydal for the first time as well as references to it in The God Squad, is considered the prequel to this story, though the tone is vastly different (due to that story being a Castle/MLP crossover).

The sequel, Crisis Of Infinite Twilights, began in September of 2013, and features Scootaloo as the main character hunting down alternate versions of Twilight who have invaded Equestria.

The story has also inspired an AU spin-off, Snowblind, which examines an alternate world (Earth 55) mentioned in the story and now officially part of the Scootaverse.

This My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Fan Fic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • All Just a Dream: After 'The End?' appears on screen, the words 'In Another Place, Another Time, and Another Reality' appear. Cue Nightmare Moon waking up in bed and telling her husband Discord she just had a dream that Twilight was trying to find out about Scootaloo (ala NEWHART). Before she can fall asleep, Nightmare hears crying... and goes to feed a foal Twilight Sparkle who has a stuffed Scootaloo doll
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Subverted, in that in one of the flashbacks, Celestia states she caught Twilight jaywalking. She then goes on to say it was after she burnt down an orphanage.
  • Amusing Injuries: Twilight has: smashed her head repeatedly against a table, been struck by Derpy, and screamed so hard she lost her voice.
  • Author Avatar: defender2222 appears in one chapter to tell an origin story (and to complain about his lack of a TVTropes Page)
  • Audience Participation: Discord decides in his chapter to hand out Mad Libs and get everyone reading the story to create their own origin for Scootaloo. Needless to say, most reviewers happily filled their in to help drive Twilight insane.
  • Badass Adorable: Tiny Tail ripping off a Dalek's eye stalk.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Lyra snaps and begins to go after Twilight, demanding she give her hands, who should burst onto the scene but Princess Luna, who declares, "No one hurts the daughter I learned about 3 hours ago!" and smashes Lyra's head into a table, knocking her out
    • Which actually ends up being a subversion given that Twilight was rescued by the one person she didn't want to be rescued by.
  • Big "NO!": Prince Blueblood, when he's about to be hit in the face by a "little accident" of Twilight's.
  • Boomerang Bigot: A pony who hates OCs (you know, Oceanic Creatures) has some OC in him.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Pinkie Pie, after sensing that the author has inserted himself into the story, rips through the story and tells the audience that breaking the fourth wall is bad.
    • In the Author Insertion chapter, defender2222 commonly looks at the audience and talks to them, complaining about not having a TV Tropes page and how negative reviews make him sad.
    • Dinky looks at the audience and shouts “META!” after the characters become too meta.
  • Buffy Speak: How Scootaloo speaks in the Buffy chapter.
  • The Cameo: Several of the origins feature ponified cameos, including a time machine inventing pony, a certain Time Lord pony, and the greatest hero you've never heard of.
  • Camp Straight: Berry Bubble in The Professor's story.
  • Child Prodigy: Dinky was written that way (possibly smarter than Twilight in certain areas), and showed it with her knowledge of time-based mechanics & theory in one chapter.
  • Commonality Connection: Twilight and Rollypolly bond over their mutual fear of the Professor. (In Twilight's case, it's more fear of the Professor telling a Scootaloo origin story.)
  • Composite Character: Word of God states that Derpy is a combination of show Derpy and Doctor Whooves and Assistant Derpy.
  • Crack Fic: Twilight is subjected to these regarding Scootaloo. When complaining to Zecora about it, she decides against dying primarily so the Grim Reaper won't have his chance. Cutaway Gag ensues.
    • The fic itself. At first it starts out down to earth, with the characters' stories being the only outlandish aspects. It... doesn't stay that way. We start with the Cakes being major gossipers, but before it's all over Twilight has a pet Dalek, and Cadence's hobby is misusing her Love Goddess powers to start orgies for the lulz.
  • Crowd Song: This occurs several times within the story. Shining Armor, Cadence, along with several random characters sing 'I Just Had Sex' as part of a cutaway. Later, Discord reenacts The Muppet Show theme with many of the ponies.
  • Cutaway Gag: Occurs more often in later chapters. Characters will reference something unbelievable, then the story will cut to reveal such an event is happening.
  • Everypony Calls Him "The Doctor": Including his own wife, much to Twilight's bafflement.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: According to Tydal, Cadence was created to be Celestia's new little sister.
    • Apparently most of the immortal beings in the story are related; Discord, Tydal, Celestia, Luna and Cadence are all brothers and sisters.
    • Zecora has been established as Celestia and Luna's niece.
  • Half Pony Hybrid: Dinky (and, by extension, her colt version, Tiny) is half pony, half Time Lord, based on what's been revealed thus far.
  • Happily Adopted: Rollypolly the Dalek
  • Head Desk: Twilight's long-running reaction. To the point where she uses it as a threat against a chapter storyteller's table if the tale swerves into Crack Fic territory.
    • It comes back to bite her in Chapter 22: she's put on trial for 20 counts of aggravated assault against tables in a dream.
    • And again in the final chapter, when she meets Scootaloo's parents. Her father is a carpenter who's working to fill a huge order of tables - replacements for the ones Twilight damaged. Twilight faints dead away at the sight.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: In Mrs. Cake's story, Big Macintosh, Granny Smith and most of the town is this (Twilight points out that homosexuality and same-sex marriage have been legal in Equestria for centuries and the mayor of Ponyville is gay).
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: Booster Gold and Blue Beetle in The Professor's story, one even calls the other his hetero life mate.
  • Hidden Depths: Rainbow Dash dropped out of flight school so she could attend Hoofard. She has a doctorate in Weather Sciences and a minor in Aerodynamics.
  • Homosexual Reproduction: The first origin states Scootaloo is the child of Applejack and Rarity.
    • Subverted in Iron Will's origin story, where Gilda and Trixie are her parents... Through adoption.
  • Implausible Deniability: Pinkie claims that Scootaloo is The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well, and refuses to believe Twilight's claim that they were MMDW. While Twilight can clearly see Pinkie's MMDW costume hanging in her closet.
    • According to Snips and Snails, Scootaloo is a vampire slayer who killed Nightmare Moon, Twilight is her stuffy Watcher, Angel Bunny is her vampire lover, and Spike is her mortal enemy. They are explaining this to Spike, who refuses to be a cockney vampire, but they insist that it's all true. And asks that he please don't kill them.
  • Interspecies Romance: Most would assume that what Iron Will said about Trixie and Gilda's relationship was just made up. But then Trixie and Gilda show up to take part in Shining Armor's "I Just Had Sex" song.
  • It Runs in the Family: Twilight and Shining Armor are the only sane ponies in Equestria. Shining's status becomes highly questionable after he has sex with Cadence (a raging nymphomaniac in this story).
    • Luna tells Celestia that pulling pranks runs in the family.
    • Luna, Tydal (her OC Brother) and Cadence all tell Twilight origins that they know are not true.
    • Celestia takes it Up to Eleven in Chapter 23, going so far as to build a whole new wing onto the royal library (and bankrupt the whole country in the process) as part of her plan to mess with Twilight's head.
    • Dinky possesses a very advanced understanding of time theory and different interpretations of timeflow. Her gender-swapped counterpart Tiny Tail is scarily competent at tearing Daleks apart. Both have Time Lord parents.
  • Lampshade Hanging: One of the recurring bits is that Twilight will comment on the plot holes and mistakes the characters are making when telling their version of Scootaloo’s origin.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: In chapter 5, Twilight has a dream that Nightmare Moon doing a nearly word-for-word version of the famous reveal.
  • MacGuffin: Scootaloo’s origins. The entire series is an anthology series featuring a bridging narrative of Twilight trying to learn the truth about the pegasus
  • Mistaken for Cheating: When Mrs. Cake catches Fluttershy giving Twilight mouth-to-mouth, word starts to spread that Twilight is cheating on Rainbow Dash. Twilight and Rainbow Dash aren't even dating.
  • Mood Whiplash: Lyra's story, a variant on The Little Match Girl, drives everyone in the area to tears. When Twilight says that at least it has a happy ending, Lyra starts ranting about how it was a straight tragedy because Celestia tyrannically stole the dying human Scootaloo away from her own world and turned her into a hands-less pony, which Lyra insists is A Fate Worse Than Death.
  • Myth Arc: As the title implies, discovering the secret origin of Scootaloo.
  • Mythology Gag: Twilight, after losing her voice, writes a barely legible note that Lyra assumes says ‘Smooze’ (something even Lyra isn’t into sexually).
  • Noodle Incident: Angel and Fancy Pants are involved in a feud whose abridged history would take three full nights to describe.
    • Apparently Twilight does...something...strange when she eats a brownie. Most characters either reference it or do what they can to prevent her from having a brownie.
  • Only Sane Pony: Twilight Sparkle, though only insofar as she can still point out the plot holes in every story she hears - otherwise, the stories and head injuries have clearly taken their toll...
    • We thought this about Shining Armor…then he sang about having sex with his wife.
  • OC Stand In: Many minor characters are given major roles in the story with new personalities. These include:
    • Mrs. Cake and Mr. Cake being shippers
    • Dinky being super intelligent to the point that she can rattle off time travel theorem.
  • Original Character: Lord Tydal is an OC (Oceanic Creature) who is an OC (Original Character).
  • Product Placement: In-universe; most of Iron Will's story is structured as a plug for his merchandise.
  • Punny Name: Apparently the Red Wings play in Detrot.
  • Replacement Goldfish: According to Tydal, the Creator made Cadence so Celestia could have a cute little sister again while Luna was banished to the moon, but they settled into an aunt/niece relationship instead.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Subverted. It is revealed that Zecora does not have to rhyme but only does so because it is tradition for royalty in her country to rhyme and she is in fact the Princess of Zebrica.
  • Royally Screwed Up: Being completely deranged is apparently a requirement for royalty.
  • Rule 63: Twilight has now met The Professor, Twisty and Tiny, the gender reversed versions of The Doctor, Derpy and Dinky. In the same chapter, she's told a story about how Scootaloo is the product of a meeting between Pinkie Pie and her male alternate, Berry Bubble.
  • Running Gag: The story is rapidly being filled with these:
    • Twilight Sparkle is the daughter of Nightmare Moon. (This one mutated to the point that even Princess Luna believed it.)
    • Twilight violently bashes her head against a table (or, in the case of Iron Will, several sheets of plywood) when characters tell crazy stories. Shining Armor even does it himself at one point, and Luna does it to Lyra as well. Turns into a Brick Joke in the last chapter, when Twilight meets Scootaloo's parents. Her father is a carpenter who is working on a huge order of tables to replace all the ones Twilight broke. Cue one fainting purple alicorn.
    • Do not let Twilight eat a brownie. It is apparently...not pretty.
  • Sanity Slippage: The events of the fic slowly erode Twilight's sanity, to the point where she bonds with, and adopts, a Dalek.
  • Share Phrase: "I'm doubting the validity of that story", which shows up here and in other stories in continuity with it.
  • Shipper on Deck: Mr. and Mrs. Cake try to convince Twilight that Applejack and Rarity are in love and point out their lack of signals as a signal.
  • Ship Tease: Many of the chapters feature different shipping pairings being connected to Scootaloo.
    • In the first chapter, Mrs. Cake believes Scootaloo is the child of Applejack and Rarity. When Twilight later storms out, she assumes Twilight is upset because she and Rainbow Dash haven't made love in months.
    • While telling her version of Scootaloo's origin, Fluttershy ships the characters based on herself and Twilight together.
  • Screw Yourself: Pinkie Pie and Berry Bubble have a 'Party'.
  • Sex God: Princess Cadence. A hockey game she attended was called off due to 'orgy'.
  • Shout-Out: The entire premise of the story is to insert Scootaloo into different origin stories.
    • Two of the latest chapters have seen Friendship is Witchcraft and On a Cross and Arrow referenced.
    • Spike's story is a mash-up of elements from James Bond, Burn Notice, and The Emperor's New Groove.
    • Pinkie Pie's story is a mish-mash of Superman, Batman, and Darkwing Duck, culminating in the conclusion that Scootaloo is Mare-Do-Well. Turns out she was just trolling Twilight all along.
    • Fluttershy's story borrows heavily from the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, with Daring Do in the lead role. She admits ahead of time that she's making the whole thing up, and later reveals she writes the Daring Do novels under a pen name.
    • The author apparently loves Animaniacs, as Cadence's chapter featured 'mini mares' who find Princess Scootaloo, three of whom are named Yakko, Wakko and Dot. Later, in Discord's chapter, the chaos god opens with his version of The Muppet Show theme.
    • According to Snips and Snails, Scootaloo is a vampire slayer, with Twilight as her Watcher, the rest of the CMC as her team, and Angel Bunny as her vampire lover. Spike, who is the audience while Twilight is getting much-needed reprieve from the madness, is less than enthused to be cast as the villain.
    • Rainbow Dash combines The Six Million Dollar Man with The Incredible Hulk.
    • Zecora borrows material from Dr. Seuss.
    • In the intro, brfore the origin stories start, there is a reference to the CMC summoning a "winged squid creature" while trying to be witches. The context seems to imply it was Cthulhu.
    • A nasty rumor involving Pinkie Pie's cupcakes is mentioned, then subverted when Twilight reveals it's not what we think... The rumor was actually that Pinkie used artificial sweeteners.
  • Spin-Off: The author has written a sequel/spinoff, The God Squad, and Snowblind by Crow Magnon is a spinoff of Doctor Whooves' chapter.
    • Word of God states that the author's first fic, a Castle/MLP crossover, is the first part of the Scootaverse, making this story a Spinoff as well. The author has yet to say if Happy Hearths Warming Day, Twilight Sparkle! is also part of the Scootaverse.
  • The Stinger: the ending, where it is shown the whole story may have been the dream of a very domesticated Nightmare Moon, who truly is married to Discord and Twilight is her baby.
  • Sudden Musical Ending: When Discord realizes the chapter hasn't ended yet, he, along with Deadpool and defender2222 sing 'Call Me, Maybe' to close out the chapter.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: as the story progresses the many weird and contradictory origin stories clearly begin taking a toll on Twilight's sanity. Despite this both Celestia and Rarity choose to prank her with their own over the top tales.
  • Villain Decay: In the Professor's chapter, she points out that Daleks in the Ponyverse are considerably easier to defeat than in her native dimension.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: From Rainbow Dash's point of view, "No... no Cadence, don't have sex on me!"
  • Write Who You Know: In universe. Fluttershy, the author of Daring Do within the story's universe, admits that she based Daring Do on Rainbow Dash (explaining why the characters look very similar).
    • Fluttershy's story also introduces Daring Do's old college friends: Charity, Acorn Jane, Starburst Eclipse, Whisperwing, and Coco Delight, who behave exactly like Rarity, Applejack, Twilight, Fluttershy, and Pinkie.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Spike ends up doing this when trying to talk like Luna in his chapter. Twilight protests his use of 'thine' (right sense of possessive, but the next word was 'quarters'; 'thy' would have been proper), claiming it wasn't a word and using a dictionary to back it up (and possibly whap Spike); in the interim, Spike was merrily butchering 'thine'. Her reflection calls her out on that one in chapter 12.
