Portrayed by: Fumi Nikaido

The female lead. She's a first-year high school girl who's determined to make friends. When trying to fit in with a pair of classmates, she starts lying to them about having a boyfriend. For the first two months, they believed her, but were starting to get suspicious when she refused to talk about him in detail and never showed a picture of him. She takes a picture of Kyouya, not realizing that he was a classmate of hers, and subsequently made him her fake boyfriend. In return for his favor, she's forced to do certain tasks for him.

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: She confesses her feelings for Kyouya in episode 3, but he turns her down, believing that since she has never dated before and that they're a fake couple, saying that her feelings aren't real.
  • Babies Ever After: In the epilogue of the manga, which takes place nearly a decade after the events of the main story, Erika is happily married to Kyouya and has a daughter named Yuina. Takeru likes to tease Kyouya with the apparent fact that Erika became pregnant before their wedding, which is something he gets annoyed with being reminded of.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult Kyouya in front of her. Even if you're family (or even her own parent), she'll call you out for your harsh words and fight you for insulting the guy she loves. Needless to say, do not talk badly about him.
    • Having her feelings being toyed with. This has led to her leaving Kyouya a few times when he says one too many rude things to her. If he takes it too far with his cold behavior, she will find a way to make him regret disrespecting her and apologize in some way. Also, this goes not just for Kyouya but anyone who makes her feel bad too often.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The brunette to Marin's blonde and Tazuka's redhead.
  • Boyfriend Bluff: This kick-started the whole premise of the series. She makes up a false boyfriend to fit in with more popular girls, but when she has no evidence to back it up, she becomes desperate.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: As much as she wouldn't like to admit it, she becomes this later on to Kyouya. (To be fair, he becomes just as jealous with her and other guys once they become a real couple.)
  • Curtains Match the Window: Brown hair and eyes.
  • The Determinator: She refuses to give up on Kyouya, even after he rejects her. Her determination eventually pays off when he falls for her for real.
  • Dude Magnet: She manages to attract a decent list of Nice Guys (and one not-so-good guy in the manga). However, she keeps her sight set on Kyouya no matter what he does. This, in which, she firmly states to all the guys that try to lure her away.
  • Extreme Doormat: She chooses to accept Kyouya's regular emotional abuse in order to fit in with her new friends. She takes quite a lot from him, but does have eventual limits with how far he can take it. By the end of the manga series, Kyouya becomes a much more considerate boyfriend with her emotional needs.
  • Happily Married: With Kyouya in the epilogue.
  • Housewife: Becomes one at the end of the manga. She's not one to rest on her laurels though and does run a small at-home business selling her own personally made glass crafts.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: The whole reason why she started lying in the first place.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Wolf Girl" by San and Kyouya and "Poochie" primarily by Kyoua.
  • I Wished You Were Dead: She angrily tells Kyouya that she wishes he would die after he mocks her for believing his fake confession. Thankfully, nothing bad happened to him and this was just her yelling at him in anger and frustration.
  • Luminescent Blush: Whenever she's around Kyouya, her face turns red.
  • Nosebleed: She has one when Kyouya uses her glasses tactic against her.
  • Only Friend: San is her only real friend.
  • Opposites Attract: She's openly sweet and is looking for romance while Kyouya is cold to the core and isn't interested in romance at all. However, she gradually brings out a more warmer and kind side to him throughout the course of their relationship.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: What she and Kyouya become over time.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Her sights are set on Kyouya, and only Kyouya. She admits in the manga that, romance-wise, her mind is set only on him and no one else.
  • Tsundere: Type B. She's usually a very sweet and kind girl. However, when Kyouya does or says something that pushes her beyond her limits, she snaps at him and won't stand for mistreatment any longer.
  • Unusual Ears: Whenever she lies, she has wolf ears and a tail sprout.

    Kyouya Sata

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai
Portrayed by: Kento Yamazaki

The male lead. He's the most popular guy in the school and is labeled as "The Prince". Erika takes a picture of him, claiming that he's her boyfriend. The day after she takes a picture of him, he overhears a conversation with her friends where he's unofficially announced as Erika's boyfriend. After she explains the situation to him, he agrees, but only if he gets to tell her to do whatever he wants as "composation".

  • Allergic to Love: He says he has no reason to pursue romance.
  • Berserk Button: He might be a jerk to Erika most of the time, but even he has limits. Mainly with other people hurting her - especially in the manga. While a stated pacifist, he resorts to violence on two occasions - both over a guy hurting Erika.
    • The first is when Kimura makes her cry by saying he'd never date a girl "cheap" like her. Kyouya punches him straight in the face when seeing how much the insult genuinely hurt Erika.
    • The second time is when he sees Terasaki about to hit Erika, catching his hand midair and already about to lose it when seeing he was about to hit her. When he realizes the guy had already hit and bruised Erika's face, Kyouya snaps and violently punches him with clear visible rage. He then pins the guy on the ground and demands he never go near her again. After taking her away from the scene, he comforts her and caresses her bruised cheek while gently holding her face.
    • A more mild, but still significant example is when Kamiya is confused over Kyouya dating Erika. (At this point, the two are dating for real.) He asks if Erika is blackmailing him, has rich family or if he has some ulterior motive. At first, he simply shrugs the comments off. However, when Kamiya crudely asks if she "is really good in bed", Kyouya visibly snaps and aggressively grabs him by his shirt collar before warning him to stop. A stunned Kamiya promptly shuts up.
  • Big Little Brother: He's taller than his older sister.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Acts like a gentleman in public, behaves like a twisted creep in private.
  • Chick Magnet: He's so popular that he has a rabid fan club that attacks Erika after learning that they're "dating".
    • The reason why Kimura pursued Erika was to get back at Kyouya for "stealing" his girlfriend away. He claims he never did anything and that she was drawn to him like any other girl.
  • Child Hater: He's not too terribly fond of children. However, after he has Yuina and gets married (in that order), he's made her the one exception.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Even before they were a real couple.
    • When Erika starts getting friendly with Kimura, he breaks her phone in half and demands that she never speak to him again. (Keep in mind, this is before they're dating for real. Erika even pointedly reminds him of their fake relationship and how it's not even "real cheating".)
    • He acts like this when he sees Kusakabe carrying one of the chocolates Erika made for him. He acts rude to her when she tries giving him the rest of the chocolates and storms off, refusing to hear why she gave Kusakabe chocolate to begin with. This leads Takeru to point out that he's jealous of Erika giving chocolates to another guy. (In Japan, giving chocolates to someone is a big sign of romantic interest. However, "friend chocolates" are also a thing, which Takeru reminds him of.) He dismisses this, however, and Takeru states his jealousy is obvious.
    • When Erika is going to go camping with friends, he's initially adamant about not going whatsoever. When he's then reminded of boys who will possibly try to flirt with Erika in his absence, he's suddenly interested in going. When Erika asks what made him change his mind, he waves off the question.
    • Similarly, when Reika and Erika are about to attend a festival, he was set on not going... until he sees Erika nicely dressed up. When Erika is ordering food, Kyouya notices two boys commenting on how cute she is and about to approach her. He responds by protectively standing next to an oblivious Erika while giving the boys a Death Glare, scaring them off. Erika notices his tense posture and asks what's wrong, which he blows off. Reika, who noticed the scene, is amused and remarks how she was wondering what made him change his mind.
    • Two times he wanted Erika to quit her job under fear of her getting male attention. First was when she briefly worked at Takeru's family restaurant and he drops by to see her. Upon seeing her waitressing in a maid uniform being well appreciated by male customers, Kyouya is fuming. He drags her outside and demands she quit on the spot. Even when Takeru defends Erika's hard work, he won't hear it; he does not want her working there. (This results in him taking over her role at work instead.) The second time is when she worked at a movie rental store and he learns her co-worker, Terasaki, is her former classmate who once confessed to her. He drops by the store "just wanting to rent a movie" and subtly intimidates him (as Erika thinks he's being friendly when he's actually subtly threatening him). He drops the request, however, when seeing how much the job meant to her.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He starts off as cold and cruel, but spending time with Erika makes him increasingly kind towards others. By the end of the manga, he has gone from being alone and bitter to arguably nice and with friends (and close bonds with once distant family as well). He takes note that all of this is because of Erika, which he is grateful for.
  • Entitled to Have You: Although he acts like this partially for the act, he also feels this way towards Erika if another guy comes in between them. He even bluntly states that Erika "belongs" to him and no other guy shall ever have her as long as that is the case.
  • Freudian Excuse: When he was younger, his parents got a divorce that left his family divided. While his sister was able to accept it and move on, he took it more seriously and swore to never fall in love. He came to believe romance and love don't truly exist and can't ever last. In addition to his divorced parents, he has a Big Sister Bully who acts more twisted than he does. His father is also largely absent from his life due to constantly working. His sister takes note of this and comments how ironic it is that their father works himself to the bone for a family he never sees. It's not hard to see where Kyouya's cynical and bitter outlook on life comes from.
  • Happily Married: In the small glimpse we get of his married life, he's living quite comfortably and has eased up on his teasing and cold behavior. Besides being a bit of a grump, he's has a genuinely loving relationship with Erika after the main story ends and is happy.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He sees through Kamiya's ploy to get him to be with multiple girls. In the anime, Kamiya tries to convince him that having multiple girls and flings is more fun than one serious relationship. In an attempt to prove this, Kamiya tells him that he has 500 girls phone numbers and therefore is having "500x more fun than him". Kyouya easily counters the argument by saying that no matter "how much trash he picks up", all he has is "a pile of trash". Kamiya is absolutely stunned and is left questioning his own lifestyle.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite treating her like dirt, he does care about Erika and does certain things that aren't necessary for the façade. As the storyline goes on, especially in the manga, he grows more and more loving and considerate towards her. He leans more towards having a simple "heart of Gold" after he and Erika get married.
  • Oh, Crap!: He has this reaction when he finds his older sister in town.
  • One Head Taller: Than Erika.
  • Pet the Dog: A bit literal since he makes Erika his "dog".
    • He does like dogs, despite giving a sadistic reason behind liking them.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: He doesn't like eating anything sweet. Erika jumps through hoops just to make him baked goods that he will like that aren't too sweet or sour. When she finally makes something she knows he will like, she is very proud of herself.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They're used to indicate his dark or mischievous behavior.
  • Sentimental Drunk: In the manga epilogue, which takes place years after the two are married and have a daughter, Kyouya goes out drinking with his friends and comes home drunk. Erika is near giddy about this as she loves it when he's drunk because he becomes "more affectionate" with her. After confirming their daughter is sleeping, he begins kissing Erika and asks to "make a second one" before the scene... heavily implies that Kyouya does become more affectionate after drinking. Later on, when he makes an unusually loving comment towards Erika, she immediately asks if he's been drinking.
  • School Idol: Known as the "White Prince" in high school.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: He says this when Takeru labels them as a couple.
  • Technical Pacifist: He hates violence and states he has a preference for not resorting to fighting. However, he will let out a nasty punch if he deems the response necessary.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was a lot nicer when he was younger until his parents became divorced and killed his belief in love.
  • When He Smiles: He's primarily a Perpetual Frowner and a Smug Snake. Seeing him genuinely smile is truly beautiful.

     Ayumi "San" Sanda
Voiced by: Ai Kayano
Portrayed by: Mugi Kadowaki

Erika's best friend. She's in the same class as Kyouya.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her real name is Ayumi, but Erika calls her "San".
  • Better as Friends: With Takeru, whom she briefly dates, but decides that they're fine being friends.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has the shortest hair in the female cast. By her adulthood though, she's grown it out to at least her lower back.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She can cook very well. She even cooks for her parents and younger siblings.
  • Honorary Aunt: Becomes one to Yuina after the end of the manga.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A side chapter reveals that she has a crush on Kyouya, but she keeps it to herself because she values her friendship with Erika more. Once she found out about his true nature through Erika, her crush does die quite a bit. She even questioned if Erika should be in such a relationship, but decides that as long as she is truly happy, she will support her.
    • Towards the end of the manga, she slaps some sense into Kyouya - literally - when finding out he emotionally manipulated Erika into giving up her dreams of going to a crafting school she desired in order to keep her by his side. She tells him that while she knows he loves Erika, he can't hold her back from pursuing her dreams and to let her go. He relents and gives his blessing for Erika to go to her dream school, resulting in their long-distance relationship.
  • Only Friend: While Erika has Marin and Tezuka to call to if she wants to have fun, Sanda's the only one Erika can turn to for romantic advice.
  • Shipper on Deck: She encourages Erika to pursue a relationship with Kyouya and gives her advice. But that's only if he isn't being a massive jerk to Erika.

    Yuu Kusakabe
Voiced by: Ayumu Murase
Portrayed by: Ryo Yoshizawa

A shy guy in Erika's class.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason he fell in love with Erika. He calls out Kyouya for mistreating Erika and says she is too kind of a person and deserves better.
  • Beautiful All Along: Even Erika said he would look good if his bangs weren’t in the way. She encourages him to cut his bangs, but he never does.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Poor guy. You just want to give him a hug.
  • Hidden Depths: As it turns out, Kusakabe is smart enough to be chosen as valedictorian for his graduating class.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He lets go of Erika so she can pursue Kyouya, but advises him to "treasure her properly".
  • Innocent Blue Eyes
  • Nice Guy: So nice that Erika decides to hang out with him. After "breaking up" with Kyouya, she openly states she wants to fall in love with him. She is truly frustrated when she can't because of how kind and nice he is towards her.
    • Dogged Nice Guy: He becomes this when Erika tells him that she's going back to Kyouya.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Compared to Kyouya, who's more "macho" than Kusakabe, he's pretty emotional and compassionate.
  • Shrinking Violet: He doesn't talk to other people.

    Takeru Hibiya
Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya
Portrayed by: Ryusei Yokohama

Kyouya's best friend. He tries to help Erika in making Kyouya fall for her.

  • Ambiguously Brown: He has the darkest skin in the series.
  • Birds of a Feather: He seems to be a lot like Erika.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: As Kyouya's only friend before he meets Erika, he's the only one the latter can tap emotional support from (not that he likes to do that).
  • Hopeless Suitor: For Erika. It seems that even his future children are destined for this, as Kyouya's certain that Yuina's going to reject whatever spawn Takeru has in the future.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very passionate and not afraid to help his friends when they need it.
  • Keet: Extremely hyperactive and doesn't hesitate to voice his opinion.
  • Matchmaker Crush: He claims that he's fallen for Erika. However, it was all a lie to get Kyouya to make a stand and confess to Erika. Or was it?
  • Mr. Fanservice: He knows he's chiseled and isn't afraid to show off his six-pack.
  • Shipper on Deck: He likes seeing Erika with Kyouya. He went out of his way to try fixing them up.
  • Tender Tears: He sheds these after Erika asks for his help to win Kyouya's heart.

    Nozomi Kamiya

  • Adaptational Villainy: In the film adaptation, he is the closest character that can be called a villain, thanks to being merged with Kimura.
  • The Casanova: He used to be a serious player, flirting with multiple girls and had over 500 phone numbers on his phone. Thanks to Kyouya, though, he's going straight.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: He instantly becomes Kyouya's new friend after failing to make him pursue a womanizing lifestyle.
  • Likes Older Women: Some of the girls he wooed were in college.
  • Perpetual Smiler: To be expected from a ladies' man.

    Marin Tachibana
Voiced by: Mariya Ise
Portrayed by: Tina Tamashiro

One of Erika's friends.

  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The blonde to Erika's brunette and Tazuka's redhead.
  • Those Two Girls: With Tazuka.

  • Composite Character: Is merged with Nozomi in the film adaptation.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Dates Erika so Kyouya can feel how it's like being cheated on. Unfortunately for him, Erika at that time isn't dating Kyouya for real.

    Atsuma Fujikawa

Marin's boyfriend.

  • Cute Little Fangs: Has a pair of cute fangs that reminds Erika of a dog.
  • Keet: Acts eternally cheerful. Erika is surprised, considering that she always thought that he's cooler than that.

    Rena Fukami

Erika's maternal cousin, she comes over Erika's residence to study for her high school entrance test.

  • Berserk Button: Her being treated like a kid.
  • Graceful Loser: Is fine when Kyouya rejects her and is amicable to Erika, since, well she can't stay angry at a close family member, after all. When she turns up later in the manga, her feelings for Kyouya are entirely gone.
  • Just a Kid: How Kyouya treats her. Kyouya cites this as one of the reasons why he won't date her.
  • The Rival: Officially claims herself as this to Erika for Kyouya's affection. She eventually decides to back down.

    Erika's parents

Erika's father works as an office worker, while her mother is a housewife.

    Kitamura

Erika's homeroom teacher from the second year onward.

    Yukari Kasai

A classmate of Erika, Kyouya, Sanda, and Nozomi during their senior year. She's no-nonsense and doesn't like people taking over jobs for fun.

  • Consummate Professional: Wants to be the female trip organizer because she wants to get the job done right.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Once she sees how much Kyouya and Erika love each other, she warms up and even volunteers to take photos of them during the trip.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's stoic to everyone but shows a gentle side to Kyouya. May or may not be because she likes him.
  • Unknown Rival: Erika doesn't know that behind her back, Kasai's trying to get Kyouya break up with her.

    Kouichi Terasaki

Erika's middle school friend and the only boy to have confessed to her before Kyouya.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Is nicknamed "Terapon" by Erika. He in turn calls her "Nikuman".
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He acts nice and helpful to people, but when rejected by the girl he likes too many times, he goes ballistic and doesn't hesitate to hit her to intimidate her into saying yes to him.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's mentioned several chapters before his introduction, as the only boy to have confessed to Erika back in middle school.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Erika right after he slaps her for rejecting him and insists she "come to her senses" in turning him down.
  • Fat Best Friend: In middle school, he was this to Erika. Since then, he has lost weight drastically.
  • Formerly Fat: Was portly during middle school. Kyouya even jokes that Erika rejected him simply because she didn't care for his appearance.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: His rant about how Kyouya is a jerk even to the girl he loves. While it's overdone, Kyouya is not a nice person to begin with, and he does patronize Erika a tad much, especially during the beginning of their relationship.
  • Not Good with Rejection: He outright hits Erika when she tells him she won't break up with Kyouya to date him instead. He's even ready to give her a full beatdown in retaliation and has to be physically restrained by a pissed-off Kyouya.
  • Sore Loser: When Erika chooses Kyouya over him, Terasaki says that he won't wish happiness for them and hopes their relationship will crash and burn. Too bad for him it doesn't.

  • Intergenerational Friendship: Gets well with Erika and friends quickly despite being the only adult in the group.

  • Perma-Stubble: Has a nice one on his chin.

    Eiko

Erika's paternal aunt, Eiko works at a homemade glassmaking factory in Kyoto.

  • Cool Aunt: Happily and immediately accepts Erika's request for a tutelage in glassmaking.
