Team RWBY

    Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose (formerly Rory Rose)

The Leader of Team RWBY.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Personality Change: In canon, Ruby never truly stood up for herself or scolded Weiss for her blatant disrespect. Here, she is much more assertive and gives her a "The Reason You Suck" Speech and lays into her for driving Blake off during the "Stray" arc.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: In canon, she was cisgender. In the fic, she is transgender.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: After Ozpin gives her advice about how even the most lenient leader must be stern if disrespected, she gives Weiss one Hell of a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, and isn't afraid to scold Yang, her big sister, when she starts acting out due to stress.
  • Character Development: Thanks to Ozpin's guidance, she's learning to become a more assertive leader.
  • Composite Character: Many actions taken from Blake's arc with Yang in Volume 2 are given to Ruby.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother, Summer, died while out on a mission and her father, Taiyang, shut down and neglected her because of it, leaving Ruby to be raised by Yang.
  • Deadpan Snarker: No really.
Roman: You think you’re really cute, don't you?
Ruby: Oh, I think I'm adorable.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Is shaken by the loss of Penny and determined to avenge her, Jaune, and the millions of people lost during the Fall of Beacon.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Cute as a button, and very much in love with Penny.
  • Love at First Sight: With Penny. The Feeling is mutual.
  • Nice Girl: Just like in canon, Ruby is kind, heroic, and has a strong desire to protect others without asking for anything in return.
  • Precision F-Strike: Two so far, which is notable since Ruby isn't someone known to swear.
    • When Qrow is injured by Tyrian, all of the pent-up frustrations and anxieties she's been having because of the Fall pour out when she finally admits she has no idea what she's doing. Punctuated by her screaming, "I don't know what the fuck to do!"
    • Ruby tells Yang that she doesn't give a fuck when she starts hurting Oscar because of Ozpin.
  • Seen It All: When Qrow comes home plastered while carrying Oscar in tow, she says not to bother him despite everyone else showing concern.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Has shades of this when she hallucinated Penny’s swords and body during the battle with the Geist and is almost killed.
  • Stepford Smiler: While not exactly smiling all the time, she does downplay her suffering after the Fall to look like an effective leader. Pyrrha calls her out and tells her not to suffer in silence. After lying about being okay and letting the others go ahead, she bawls her eyes out.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: She falls into Tyrian's clutches and has Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren pretend to abandon her. She does this to get the information she wants out of him and to get his guard down so Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren can ambush him.

    Weiss Schnee

Weiss Schnee

The heiress to the Schnee Dust Company and second oldest Schnee child.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Develops her summoning without Winter’s assistance and kills the White Fang Lieutenant instead of losing to him.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Much more hostile and bigoted than in canon.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Though her name is German, this Weiss is explicitly the nationality as she’s prone to speaking it when angered.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Despite the above, she actually apologies to Blake and is on track to becoming a flat-out Nice Girl instead of Tsundere Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Break the Haughty: Gets a series of brutal The Reason You Suck Speeches that lay into her for being a bigoted Jerkass. They finally seem to get through to her during the "Stray" arc, and she's actively trying to be a better person.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Raised by Jacques, who physically and psychologically abused her. One instance had him forcing her to watch people getting executed for hours just to get her to hate the Faunus.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Everything about her less-savory behaviors earlier in canon is played out with the harshest possible consequences. No one gives her any leeway to act the way she does, and it takes even longer to mend the relationships she has. Notably, it also takes her longer to genuinely improve with how deeply ingrained her behavior is.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While the others do acknowledge that Weiss has had a tough life, they tell her that it doesn't excuse her toxic behavior. Pyrrha mentions that she had to deal with terrible stuff in her life and she decided to become a better person. Weiss doesn't have any right to treat others horribly when others have been through similar stuff and still turned out decent.
  • Harmful to Minors: She was forced to watch the White Fang execute board members by her father, which emotionally scarred her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Deconstructed Trope. Weiss’ interview with Ozpin proved she was always a decent person underneath her haughty and bigoted exterior, but that doesn’t mean people are just going to put up with her toxic behavior. Nobody likes her until she actively starts to extinguish the “jerk” part.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Becomes remorseful and kind after she finally drops her haughty bigotry. She also becomes a lot more empathic by connecting to others and helping them out of their problems.

    Blake Belladonna

Blake Belladonna

A cat Faunus with a very troubled past.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In addition to the trauma of having her abuser return and watching Yang get dismembered, she now has to deal with being raped by Adam during this and her trauma manifests quite explosively when she does leave.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Frequently speaks French when nervous or exasperated.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Is a lot more sociable and less confrontational than in canon.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mainly when it comes to Faunus racism. The usually shy, timid Blake becomes downright nasty. Though considering it is CRDL and pre-Character Development Weiss, it’s hardly unjustified.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her abusive past with Adam is alluded to throughout the story. We learn she was almost molested by a school teacher as a child, and said school teacher also murdered her childhood friend.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: To Sun. Justified, as he was introduced to her stealing food and she was still incredibly bitter after her argument with Weiss. She doesn’t trust him at first and threatens to kick his ass if he tries anything, but she softens as they enjoy their day together and they end up friends.
  • Does Not Like Men: Downplayed. Blake gets along with men just fine, but she doesn’t like being romantically involved with them and doesn’t like them touching her. After her encounter with Adam, she falls into this trope more as she assaults and threatens to murder Sun and goes on a rant about how men only want to use her body after he touches her shoulder to check her wound.
  • Nice Girl: Though shy, Blake is polite, outgoing, and willing to give others a second chance.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: She brings The Cavalry to Mistral to stop Adam, finally being able to stand up to him with the support of her family now knowing what he put her through.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The usually brave Blake is quite possibly even more terrified of Adam here than in canon. Even when she tries to fight back she’s screaming and crying, and eventually submits herself entirely and lets him have his way with her.
  • Precocious Crush: When she was five, she had a crush on Adam when he was fifteen.
  • Rape as Backstory: Not only was she raped by Adam, but her school teacher attempted to molest her.
  • Rape as Drama: The Fall of Beacon sees her being raped by Adam with Blush.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Alessandro, when she was a kid. As expected for five-year-olds, one night they’re getting along swimmingly, and the next morning Blake is threatening to end their friendship just because he mocked her crush on Adam and made them late for class.

    Yang Xiao Long

Yang Xiao Long

Ruby's older half-sister.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Her Semblance. Yang basically becomes a borderline invincible walking inferno, burning so hot bullets melt before they can reach her.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the "Yellow" trailer, Yang entered Junior's bar to beat him and his crew up for information about her mother. Here, she was working with the police of Vale and beating him and his goons up for the far more justified reasons of abducting her girlfriend.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While she was cold to Blake when she returned to the team in canon, she at least showed a desire to mend their strained relationship. Here, she is openly antagonistic toward Blake.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Prior to Volume 4, she has a better grip on her temper when compared to canon, but when a loved one is hurt or in danger, it will always go off.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In canon, the only person she ever killed was Adam. Here, she has a substantial body count and will kill people who mess with her thanks to her time with Hector. She also kills Shay and his group rather than leave them alive.
  • Anti-Hero: After Sapphire’s death, Yang has become more brutal and angrier, horrifically slaughtering her enemies without remorse or mercy.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Especially when it comes to baddies threatening Sapphire. After beating goons sent by Junior to kill both her and Sapphire, she explicitly tells one of the goons she’ll kill anyone who comes after Sapphire again and pays two prisoners to beat Junior up, threatening to have him shanked if he tries that again.
  • Bifauxnen: Wore a masculine tuxedo to the dance instead of the white dress from canon.
  • Crusading Widow: Is on a revenge mission against Mercury for killing Sapphire.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Like in canon, her mother, Summer, died while out on a mission and her father Tai shut down because of it, leaving Yang to raise Ruby on her own. She’s moved on from it and is mainly just focused on the present. However, it seems the present isn't much better when the Fall happens.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Surprisingly dry-witted for someone so emotionally open, though this mainly applies while dealing with the Hardy Boys’ antics.
  • Decomposite Character: Yang doesn't give Blake the talk about taking a break. That is given to Ruby instead.
  • Defiant to the End: Thankfully saved by Raven like in canon, but she actually has a few seconds of consciousness after being beaten by Neo and uses it to crack a joke about her height.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Likes the occasional sex joke, but even she’s put off by the unintended innuendos caused by the Hardy Boys and the criminals they face.
  • Heartbroken Badass: After the death of Sapphire, Yang is left so broken she almost takes her own life, but Sapphire leaving her a message telling her to live and bring the man who killed her parents to justice encourages her to fight on to avenge her.
  • Hidden Depths: For someone who likes to make sex jokes about her girlfriend, when the two actually decide to make love for the first time she’s awkward and gentle. [[spoiler:
  • Humble Hero: Though some of this might be insecurities, Yang doesn't mind not being the leader and has nothing but pride in Ruby.
  • Immune to Bullets: Her semblance causes bullets to melt before they can hit her.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Starts one up with Hector, who is at least forty years her senior.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Sapphire had a very lonely life before she met Yang, and this results in Yang being this to her. The feeling is mutual, as she’s the reason Yang is much more well-adjusted in this when compared to canon.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After beating up and yelling at Oscar for Ozpin's mistakes and crimes, Ruby calms her down enough to realize how traumatized Oscar is by it.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her dark past, Yang is fun, cheerful, and humble. Even after losing Sapphire, she tries her best to be kind to those she cares about.
  • Official Couple: With Sapphire. They end up engaged by the end of the "Breach" arc.
  • Promoted to Parent: Yang had to step up when she and Ruby’s Mom died and their dad shut down.
  • Revenge is Sweet: When she kills Mercury the same way he killed Sapphire, she seems quite pleased and satisfied with the outcome, with the narration even stating that she feels that "all was right in the world".
  • Sickening Sweethearts: She and Sapphire are not afraid of PDA.
  • Team Mom: Mainly because she actually has experience in mothering while taking care of Ruby after Summer’s death.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: She becomes more bitter and spiteful after Sapphire's death, not helped by Hector enabling her revenge-driven tendencies. Giving Blake the cold shoulder for abandoning the team and beating up Oscar for Ozpin's crimes show this.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When Sapphire is killed, the wave of negativity caused by her grief causes the Grimm to flinch and run away.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Trashing Junior's nightclub and beating up his goons just to get Sapphire is one of many things that proves this.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: Yang did a perfectly fine job mothering Ruby despite the emotional trauma of losing their mother and the neglect of their father. This, plus the fact she’s proven herself to be very competent in tasks usually done by people much older than her, is one of the main reasons both she and Ruby have confidence in her decision to marry Sapphire despite their young age.

Team JNPR

  • Wholesome Crossdresser: During the dance, the boys wear dresses (with Ren going further than Jaune by also wearing heels) and the girls wear suits.
    Jaune Arc

Jaune Arc

The Leader of Team JNPR.

Tropes:

    Nora Valkyrie

Nora Valkyrie

A hyperactive member of Team JNPR who has a crush on her partner and childhood friend Ren.

Tropes:

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: She’s very spacey, and her idea of a scary story is one where pancake batter runs out and the world ends.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She loves Oscar to bits and she wants to adopt him on the spot. With prepared adoption papers she somehow has on her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was the victim of one of Wendigo's rampages and was homeless with Ren after the encounter.
  • Genki Girl: When her spirits are high, she is an unstoppable bundle of energy that cannot be quelled.
  • Hidden Depths: She is much more emotionally intelligent than she lets on and has moments of comforting Ren.
  • Nice Girl: Bright, cheerful, fun, and caring.
  • Noodle Incident: Ren mentions her starting food fights.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: She vehemently denies having a crush on Ren, despite no one ever asking her about that or there not being any reason to deny such a thing. She decides to stop it when they nearly die at the hands of the Wendigo.

    Pyrrha Nikos

Pyrrha Nikos

A world-renowned huntress trainee.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: She had to deal with her abusive Stage Mom for most of her life. Rather than Attractiveness Isolation, she was deliberately isolated by her mother from having any friends. Not only did her mother abuse her, but she also abused her father for taking Pyrrha's side. We learn later that she murdered her father before her very eyes. And despite surviving Cinder's attack, she now has to deal with the trauma of losing Jaune.
  • Adaptational Nationality: Pyrrha speaks Greek in this canon.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Pyrrha is much more assertive here instead of being an Extreme Doormat. Instead of just sitting back and letting Weiss speak for her like in canon, she very quickly puts the Schnee heiress in her place when Weiss tries to do it in this work.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While her crush on Jaune is obvious, she does seem to enjoy it when Winter was beating up Qrow.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: After putting up with Weiss' odious behavior and blatant ass-kissing attempts, she straight-up slams her against the lockers and gives her a well-deserved "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: When her father is shot in the head in front of her, his blood gets in her eyes.
  • Broken Ace: She's one of the most well-known huntress trainees in Remnant and is adored by millions, but she is dealing with a ton of baggage from her mother's abuse.
  • Covert Pervert: She accidentally lets it slip when she sees Winter kicking Qrow's ass.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Talia escaped prison to come back and kill her, but Pyrrha stands up to her and puts her in her place.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Raised by an abusive Stage Mom who assaulted her father in front of her and murdered him in front of her when she attempted to leave.
  • Handicapped Badass: After taking the infamous arrow to the Achilles tendon, she’s left with the choice to limp and never fight again, or lose it and continue the fight. She chooses the latter so she can avenge Jaune.
  • Heartbroken Badass: After Jaune’s death, she’s a mess but determined to avenge him.
  • It's All My Fault: She continues to blame herself for Jaune's death, something both Saphron and Ren try to get her to stop doing.
  • Nice Girl: Swore to treat others with kindness to avoid being like her mother.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: After giving her mother a thorough "The Reason You Suck" Speech, she states while Talia has a gun to her head that she isn't scared of her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Jaune dies in her place.

    Lie Ren

Lie Ren

Nora’s childhood friend and crush.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Didn’t step in to help Velvet in canon, very much did so here.
  • Bully Hunter: Steps in to help Velvet along with Coco for no other reason than to help.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His fight with Sky Lark while defending Velvet lasted all of ten seconds.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He had to watch his village get slaughtered when he was a child, with the Wendigo specifically taunting him about murdering his parents.
  • Nice Guy: Ren's honored his father's teachings by always being kind and helpful.
