The Twins' Household

    Upin and Ipin

Arrufin bin Abdul Salam and Arrifin bin Abdul Salam

The titular protagonists of the show. The twins are students of Tadika Mesra kindergarten, living with their big sister and grandmother after their mother passed away.
  • All Just a Dream: Several scenarios like the Sailors & Pirates and the Futuristic setting is just them playing around and imagining the scenario in their heads. Justified that they're still kindergartener age.
  • Always Identical Twins: The only feature distinguishing the two apart is their color scheme (Upin wears yellow, Ipin wears blue) and Upin's single strand of hair on his head, which Ipin lacks.
  • Big Eater: Downplayed compared to Ehsan, but both twins share a good appetite and highly favor eating fried chicken.
  • Breakout Character: An interesting inversion; Geng was released in 2009, two years after the first season of the show begin airing, but the film was planned since 2005, and the twins themselves are introduced as the deutragonists to Rajoo and Badrol as protagonists. The twin's show ended up being more successful in the process while both Rajoo and Badrol got sidelined and turned into side characters in their stories.
  • Character Catch Phrase: "Betul, Betul, Betul!" for Ipin.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: With the exception of their normal school uniforms, every outfit that Upin wears will always be coloured yellow, whilst Ipin's outfits tend to be sky blue. This also applies to anytime they become anthropomorphic objects.
  • Iconic Outfit: Ipin always wears his small red cape (that was revealed in "Kain Merah Ipin" to actually his bib when he was a baby). Anytime he is represented as an anthropomorphic object, there will be a little red piece coming from his back that represents the cape.
  • Literal-Minded: In episode 8, Ros mentions that to learn when the first day of Ramadhan comes, one must look at the New Moon as a sign of entering the new month in Hijria Calendar, but they think that a new moon would be a little moon sighted close to the moon (The original Malay word refers it as "Anak Bulan" which literally translates to "Moon's child"). Opah later informs them that the new moon can only be seen in certain areas.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Neither of their full names are known until a certain episode that features Upin's birth name on a report card. Despite this, they still continue to be called Upin and Ipin in the series.
  • Parental Abandonment: It's revealed in the mother's day episode that the twin's (and Kak Ros) mother has passed away. Their father's whereabouts still remain a mystery.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Upin is slightly more reckless and lax compared to Ipin, while Ipin is more active and calculating.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Said whatever to see Upin and Ipin react against Ros's constant anger and comparing her with Iz, they are still 5 years old children who are' still learning the difference between right or wrong and don't understand of people's complex personalities since they still have a Black-and-White Morality view, making the Twins see Ros's anger as' equal to being "heartless".
  • Spoiled Brat: Can be this at times, though they would often
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Both are fond of a variety of chicken dishes, but nothing beats them like the usual fried chicken.
  • Trickster Twins: Downplayed. Their tricks are usually harmless and the twins are good at heart, just a little mischievous.

    Kak Ros
The twin's big sister and a freelancer comic artist.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Ros is always angry toward The Twins, but it is mostly because of her being worried about their wellbeing or to discipline them. Deconstructed and Played for Drama in the episode "Abang dan Akak", where Upin and Ipin snapped at her for her constant anger as they tired of her abrasive behavior, to the point The Twins outright said they would prefer Iz (Mail older brother) as their older sibling rather than her.
  • Big Sister Bully: Ros is firm and stern to her little brothers, given that those two can be a little bratty at times.
  • Big Sister Instinct: However as harsh as she can be, she still cares well for her little brothers and is willing to go far to protect them from harm. How far? Just ask Sally.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Familial example. Whenever Rose scream, hit, slap or pinch the Twins, its usually Played for Laughs and fully justified since its for discipline them. Have their gender swapped, Ros attitude will consider as unforgivable or abusive.
  • Expy: Kak Ros is basically a Malaysian version of Nani Pelekai from Lilo And Stitch. Both of them are talented late-teenagers who are older sisters of the titular character, who acts as a Parental Substitute for them due to their parents passing away before the series starts. While always appearing to be hot tempered and harsh toward their siblings, who are still kindergarten students, they still do their best to take care of them.
  • Freudian Excuse: A lot of her haughty moments can be excused that the twins is all she ever had for a family.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As harsh as she can be, Ros is still a morally uptight and caring person.
  • Pen Pals: She writes and exchanges letters with a Japanese girl called Hideko.
  • Sequential Artist: She's a comic book artist and secretly the author of "Kembar Kembar Nakal".
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She has no problem hurting anyone if it means to protect her brothers, and it shows.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: Sometime show a lovely gaze on Iz. Whenever Iz look at her, Ros start acting awkward to hide her feeling.
  • Troll: When she's not being stern or haughty, she would occasionally exploit the twin's earnestness and naivety for shit and giggles.
  • Unusual Euphemism: When Upin and Ipin ask why Miss Jasmine didn't fast, Ros said that women are "special" (it's because of menstruation).
  • Younger Than They Look: At first glance, one might think Ros is somewhere in her 20's. Ros is still a second-year highschool student.

    Opah

Siti

The twins and Ros' grandmother. She's the one sheltering the three after their mother (and by extension, her daughter) died.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's the middleman between the twins and Ros, and is the one where the twins would seek help and answers for everyday problems.
  • Parental Substitute: She's one towards her grandchildren after their mother died, nurturing and sometimes spoiling them for needs.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Opah is considered a lower-mid class citizen and is relying on her small garden and tapping rubbers, but is seemingly able to pay the electricity and water bills every month, while also affording anything her grandchildren want and need. It's possible that the unseen father of the twins are sending them his paycheck for a living.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the twins asks why Miss Jasmine didn't fast, she simply throws the question to Ros and leaves.

Students and Faculty Members of Tadika Mesra

    Ehsan

Ehsan Bin Azzarudin

The twin's neighborhood and classmate, and the resident Big Eater.
  • Acrofatic: Believe it or not, but he's not as slog as his appearance would suggest, as he was able to go toe-on-toe against the twins in all two of their badminton matches.
  • Big Eater: He really loves to eat.
  • Dirty Coward: Occasionally slides between this and Lovable Coward, depending on the situation.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: His father would call him "Intan Payung", which means "Sweetie Pie". When Fizi finds out, he starts teasing Ehsan with it.
  • Hidden Depths: He hates being left alone, but can't properly express that when he needs to. Despite his moments of haughty, he would occasionally tag along with the twins because they're probably one of the few people who consider him a friend besides Fizi, and would help them when needed.
  • Put on a Bus: On the "Eid Fitr Special in 2020", Ehsan and his family celebrate Eid Fitr overseas, leaving Fizi alone in the village.
  • Spoiled Brat: IF there's something he wants, he will beg his father to buy him one.
  • Those Two Guys: With Fizi.
  • Token Rich Student: Apart of maybe Mei Mei, Ehsan and his parents are one of the few more fortunate people in the village.
  • Tuckerization: It's probably not a coincidence that one of the show scriptwriter is named Ehsan bin Azharuddin.

    Fizi

Muhammad Al-Hafezzy

The twin's neighborhood and classmate and the cousin of Ehsan.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Implied. Many would suggest that Fizi is even more of a brat than his cousin, Ehsan. Nevermind that he's still a kindergartener and thus doesn't understand the weight of his own words.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Occasionally takes jabs at anything one would say, not just Ehsan, but all other kids as well.
  • Dirty Coward: He's even more of a coward than his cousin.
  • Fourth Wall Psych: His apology is delivered as if he's apologizing to the audience, until the last second where it's revealed that he uses a tablet camera to communicate with the twins from afar.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Perhaps his most defining personality trait. He has no weight for words before he says them, not understanding the consequences they might bring. Best exemplified in "Eid Fitr Special in 2020" where he blatantly tells the twins that no paradise awaits for motherless orphans, as he finds it the hard way.
  • Those Two Guys: With Ehsan.
  • Yes-Man: Serves as one for Ehsan.

    Mei Mei

Xiao Mei Mei

A Chinese girl and the twins' classmate.
  • Asian and Nerdy: More like Chinese and nerdy, she's one of the smartest students in Tadika Mesra and loves to read.
  • Big Eater: Very downplayed, but she mentions that she loves to eat, especially in Eid Raya days.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Almost always wears pink and is unambiguously the most feminine out of all the cast.
  • Proud Beauty: She likes to address herself as "Mei Mei yang cantik" (the beautiful Mei Mei).
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's unambigously feminine and proper, and she wouldn't be so hesitant to hit someone if needed. Best seen in "Air Kolah Air Laut".
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Mail. Though they would occasionally veer towards Ship Tease.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Mei Mei is shown to be a smart and helpful girl in school, though some of the male classmate call her insufferable and accuse her to be a class kiss-up, especially Mail. But she is still very nice to everybody she meets.
  • Token Minority: She's the only member of her school of Chinese ethnicity.
  • Tsundere: Type B. She's nice and demuring towards everyone else, but shown to be rough and stern to the boys, especially Mail.

    Mail

Ismail bin Mail

The twin's classmate and the resident entrepreneur-wannabe.
  • Bad Liar: Mail used to lie every now and then, but most of them weren't any more convincing than petty lies. This slowly died down during the show's progression.
    • He lies about the real price for Lemang note  to Opah, charging her more than what she should have paid. He apologizes afterwards.
    • He forges his father's signature with the one he shoddily made so he won't have to go to the portable dentist. He got toothache the next day.
  • Big Brother Worship: He sees his brother as a figure he would aspire to be.
  • Catchphrase: "Dua Seringgit", which literally means "two for one ringgit".
  • Character Development: Mail is seen to be wiser, less apathetic and more honest as the show progresses, even becoming the negotiator between two conflicting sides.
  • Cool Bike: Subverted. It's a rusty, old-style adult bicycle from a bygone era that towers his body height, but he seems to be able to ride it just fine.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Played with. Whenever Susanti is nearby, he would sweep away his apathetic behavior to greet her and even serve her.
  • Money Fetish: Mail is really frugal and loves getting money to his pockets.
  • Only Sane Man: Usually becomes this to the other kids.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Mei Mei, though they would occasionally veer towards Ship Tease.
  • Ship Tease: Again, with Mei Mei. During her first appearance, Mail would receive one with Susanti.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Part of his character development. Thanks to being taught how to be responsible for his family business, he's the one with the most knowledge and wisdom compared to other kids, like how to negotiate fruit price and the importance of filial piety in Islam.
  • Young Entrepreneur: Mail is an entrepreneur wannabe and is taught by his parents to manage their food stall and shop.

    Jarjit

Jarjit Singh

The twins' classmate who likes to speaks in short poetries.
  • Attention Whore: Really loves being the limelight of attention.
  • Bad Boss: Whenever the kids working together on a project, he would join in, only for him to slack off and commanded the kids to do his bidding.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Captain Jarjit Singh initially considered to be one for the "Kembara Ke Pulau Harta Karun" miniseries, but his presence was slowly overtaken by the Pulu tribe chief once the story continues onward.
  • Catchphrase: "Marvelous! Marvelous!"
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: A number of kids express their displeasure around Jarjit, namely for being downright annoying at times, but they can't seem to abandon him.
  • It's All About Me: Has shades of this. Occasionally he joins a session and put himself in the crowd's attention, before being either mocked upon and dismissed.
  • Large Ham: Thanks to no part for being voiced by an adult.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Jarjit almost always speaks in pantun (a Malayan term for poetry) that rhymes.
  • Symbol Swearing: Captain Jarjit attempts to speak "Pulu Pulu" results this in the subtitles, although he doesn't actually know what he's saying.

  • A Day in the Limelight: "Ikhlas Dari Hati" is basically focuses around him.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: His tendencies to freak out alongside his illiteracy and preference to use gestures to talk might indicate that he's on the autism spectrum, and a high functioning one to boot, if his quick learning is any indication.
  • Best Friend: Is one with Dzul. Dzul is the only kid that he's comfortable being around with.
  • Cosmic Plaything: There's nothing going right for this kid, ranging from being butt of many jokes, being revealed to be illiterate, then having his favorite teacher Cikgu Jasmin leaving the schoolgrounds for good. And that's not including the part where his house caught on a fire...
  • Cute Mute: Subverted. In the shows proper, Ijat rarely speaks and would rather express his opinions with gesture languages, implying that he's a mute, but occasionally he would often say a word or two. It was revealed in "Seronoknya Membaca" that it's a coverup for his illiteracy. As he learns reading from Cikgu Jasmin in the following episode, he starts being able to do basic reading and become more versed in basic verbal conversation, though he would still uses gesture to communicate.
  • Hidden Depths: Ijat might be illiterate, but he's shown to be a quick learner and can hold speech pretty well depending on the circumstances.
  • House Fire: A non-lethal victim of one. Halfway through "Ikhlas Dari Hati", it's revealed that the reason why he isn't on the class is because his house is on fire yesterday.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's very shy and would rather hide from the spotlight.
  • Talking with Signs: Uses bodily gestures to speak to hide the fact that he's illiterate. After learning sessions with Cikgu Jasmin, he can read better and speak normally, though it doesn't stop him from doing so.
  • Those Two Guys: Along with Dzul.

    Dzul
Another student of Tadika Mesra. Almost always seen with Ijat.

  • Ship Tease: Mail immediately fall in love at the first sight of her, and they would occasionally interact, though she only sees her as a good friend.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Even moreso than Mei-Mei.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Averted. Susanti speaks in formal Indonesian speech pattern, but it's not shown as comedic or mocking. Naturally, everyone in her class welcomes her, especially Mail.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's allergic to pollen.

  • Paper Tiger: Quickly knocked out in a single strike in Geng, courtesy of Kak Ros.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's only going with Pak Mail's and Singh's gig because he wants some quick cash.
