I am Ultraman Tregear. I came to fulfill your wish.

Portrayed by: Yūma Uchida (voice; Japanese), Michael Rhys (voice; English), Kou Nanase (Kirisaki).

A dark Ultra who has a history with Taro, formerly a shy and reserved Blue Tribe Ultra, he fell to darkness as his insecurities in regards to his powers and competence next to other Ultras, especially his Only Friend, Ultraman Taro, started to cause blows to his self-esteem and faith in the ideals of the M78 Ultras.

Driven to find if these ideals of light and bonds were as sacred as he was taught they were, Tregear found himself turning away from the light following his discovery of the falls from grace of both Ultraman Belial and Ultraman Hikari and instead adopting the powers of darkness and evil as a means of proving the entire ideology of the Ultras to be nothing but naive ideals, spreading chaos across the universe with utmost glee and apathy at the consequences of his actions.

He is the arch-enemy of Ultraman Taiga, son of his former friend Taro, who he targets in order to spite the latter. He serves as the central antagonist of all the Taiga instalments.

    A-D
  • Above Good and Evil: He considers himself to be this, at least in regard to the classic definitions of good and evil and their association with light and darkness, respectively. He thinks that all those concepts are bogus and is out to prove them wrong with his actions.
  • Action Bomb: Turns out, Tregear is able to uses his own version of the Ultra Dynamite. His flame is blue to contrast with Taro's red.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: The last thing Tregear does before he and Grimdo are obliterated by Reiga is to cry out Taro's name in sorrow with Taro himself feeling major empathy for his former friend before he is killed for good and softly calling out his name in return. Which in general sums up just how tragic Tregear really was even with all he had done.
  • Alternate Self: He weaponized this trope in order to cheat death, by using Grimdo's power he could transfer his consciousness to take over and reshape the body of an alternate Tregear when killed.
  • Ambiguously Gay: The Ultraman Taiga novel Blue Shadow reveals that when Taro was his only friend, Tregear secretly wrote poems of him in admiration. Back when he created the Taiga Spark, he was also planning to name the item as Taro Spark. Not to mention that his final moments have him sorrowfully calling out to Taro. And his Parallel Isotope ends up convinced to join Absolute Tartarus out of a fear of eventually becoming enemies with Taro if he kept down the same path he was undergoing before his merge with Grimdo.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!:
    • His purpose of corrupting Taiga into an evil Ultraman is to serve as means of spiting Ultraman Taro, who he feels really conflicted towards but always envied his strength and resented how little his friend understood him.
    • Once Hiroyuki and the others saved Taiga from Tregear's corruption, the evil Ultra targeted EGIS members, especially Hiroyuki for no other purposes than to spite him even further.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Ultraman Taiga and his host, Hiroyuki. Tregear is responsible for various tragic events in their lives and they serve as his most direct opposition due to being the son of Tregear's former friend, Ultraman Taro, and his human host who embody everything Tregear stands against.
  • Art Initiates Life: His dark power can bring drawings into life, and has the potential to create powerful entities such as Snake Darkness in Ultraman R/B The Movie: Select! The Crystal of Bond.
  • Ax-Crazy: And how, even more so than Belial of all people as Tregear aims to cause ruin and misery solely because he can rather than having any grander purpose for it. Nevertheless, Tregear is very good at hiding it most of the time provided he doesn't gets frustrated or provoked.
  • Badass Bookworm: Extracanonical sources stated that he was a scientist in the Land of Light but was a poor combatant, his current self retains the intelligence but is far more powerful, having a variety of superpowers that he combines with his genius mind to cause effective mayhem.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: At the tail end of Darkness Heels -Lili- he shows up in Chapter 5.3 to kill the Kyrieloid Silo and take his power after he'd fled from his loss to the Darkness Heels.
  • Barrier Warrior: Ischyros Heba, An energy shield, durable enough to withstand Grigio Regina's Erga-Trio Cannon.
  • Berserk Button: There are only two things that can piss him off: 1) The Power of Friendship that recent Ultraman uses to this day, and 2) disagreeing the fact that light and darkness are the same side of a coin.
  • Beware the Superman: Like Belial, he was once a benevolent member of the Ultraman race, but turned down a path of evil and used his powers to cause misery and ruin across the multiverse all for his amusement.
  • Big Bad: Acts as this for Ultraman R/B The Movie: Select! The Crystal of Bond and Ultraman Taiga.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He is a firm believer that there is no such thing as good or evil and that the Land of Light's ideals are bollocks. His human form, Kirisaki wears a T-shirt with white on the right and black on the left, further symbolizing his morality.
"This is exactly what I mean. You guys are always labeling things as black and white. I'm telling you, there is no such thing as good or evil in this universe."
  • Blue Is Calm: He was once calm and collected when he was a resident of the Land of Light, being a scientist that worked under Hikari's mentorship. Even after his turn to evil, his modus operandis is far calmer than most other Ultra Series's villains, in spite of masking a cruel and vindicative personality.
  • Break the Cutie: What Tregear ultimately did to Katsumi in R/B The Movie, by tricking him to a distant alien planet, and then breaking his spirit, his desire to fight, his self-confidence and self-worth as an Ultra warrior, and repeatedly indulging in convincing the Ultra is a failure.
  • Broken Pedestal: Ultraman Hikari became one for Tregear according to the Blue Shadow novel. Tregear became bitter and resentful when he learns of Hikari's path of revenge following the incident on Planet Arb. Even worse when Tsurugi turned on and attacked him.
"That intelligent Ultraman Hikari, who was skeptical about fighting! The boss who I used to respect and a proud scientist of the Blue Tribe had fallen into darkness and degenerated into someone seeking vengeance. Ultramen aren't gods. Although we're not gods, we worked to maintaining the balance of the universe, good and evil, light and shadow. The existence of Belial and Hikari were cracks that ran into the Land of Light. Born as an Ultraman, there are some who have enormous power and fascinated by the darkness. Other than our gigantic proportions, the Ultramen are exactly the same as the Earthlings. So aren't we immature creatures?
  • Cerebus Retcon: His final moments in Taiga before being obliterated by Taiga Tri-Strium's Quattro Squad Blaster has him comparing Taiga's backlit figure from Earth's sun to Taro. Unlike most of the time when he calls the young Ultra as Taro's son just to mess with him, as the Blue Shadow novel revealed, Tregear's start of friendship with Taro was after his former friend jumped with his back lit by the sun and that image stuck into Tregear's head as his (regrettably) happier moments of his childhood life so his reaction wasn't his usual self, it was a legitimate episode of emotion.
  • Containment Clothing: His suit following his merge with Grimdo was meant to not only showcase his turn to the darkness, but also mantain Grimdo and its power sealed in his body, letting him make full use of it. When Taiga Tri-Strium kills him in the series finale of Ultraman Taiga his seal ends up damaged enough that by the time of his reappearance in New Generation Climax Grimdo starts to leak out and eventually escapes altogether.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist:
    • While just as bombastic and over the top as Makoto Aizen/Cereza, Tregear is actually an Ultraman, albeit, one fallen, while Makoto was a Loony Fan who could only become an Evil Knockoff of his favorite Ultraman while wishing to be one. There also a wide contrast between their personalities and motivations: Aizen was genuinely Affably Evil and arranged for Engineered Heroics to he can "save" the day as the hero the people wanted. Meanwhile, Tregear positively revels in being Faux Affably Evil while causing as much pain and misery as he can due to sincerely believing that good and evil are just made up ideas
    • Despite his similarities with Belial given that they were fallen Ultras and close friends with one of the members of the Space Garrison, the differences that Tregear was more of a chaotic Straw Nihilist sadistic trickster and manipulator who enjoys causing mayhem for the hell of it, whereas Belial is more of a power-hungry, intergalactic tyrant. Furthermore, Belial no longer considers Ken a friend in any capacity and was implied to always be resentful of his power, whereas Tregear for all his bluster is heavily implied to still harbor some amount of love for Taro and specially targets the Ultraman for that purpose.
  • Cool Mask: Has a shadowy black mask over his eyes and forehead that furthers his sinister appearance.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's a chaotic nihilist who spreads misery and ruin purely to facilitate and validate his views and clad in black and blue colors while oppenly opposing the concepts of light and warmth in favor of favoring darkness and its power.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • The novel, Blue Shadow, depicts his starts as a timid and well-meaning Ultra, his fall from grace, turn to evil, merge with Grimdo, first acts of evil and encounters with various entities and characters from the franchise overall all from his point of view, allowing viewers to understand him more.
    • In addition to Belial's own, parts of Tregear's Start of Darkness is also chronicled in the second chapter of The Absolute Conspiracy. Most notably in Episode 5, where he takes center stage as we see his fall from grace and Tartarus recruiting him.
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • To fully sever his connection to his Ultraman heritage, Tregear has the evil god from Planet Volhes, Grimdo, absorbed into his body and embraces his current title as a demon.
    • This is also the means he uses for his Jackass Genie approach to granting people's wishes and then use them to destroy their planets, making his victims get what they desire at the price of everything else in a deal with him.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Is presented as this, he brought Riku and Pega to R/B's Earth and Katsumi to an alternate dimension of Pigmons. in R/B The Movie and has travelled many other dimensions and worlds following his turn to the dark side, either meeting or creating new threats along the way.
  • Diving Kick: Geargy Dirge, in which he leaps and flying kicks his opponent with a drilling kick, it has enough power to de-transform an Ultra if it connects.
  • The Dragon: In New Generation Climax he serves as this to Grimdo as with the evil entity's imminent escape Tregear is forced to assist it, though he's also the more personal foe of the two against the heroes.
  • The Dreaded: Ever since he obtained his powers of darkness, Tregear turned into a figure of dread and caution. So much so that evil aliens like Markind of Villain Guild is willing to call off their auction when he's on the scene.
    E-H
  • Enemy Summoner: Thanks to Grimdo's power by simply calling their name, Kirisaki is able to summon monsters through a purple vortex in the sky which are an uncompressed version of his Kaiju Rings.
  • Evil Brit: He speaks with a British accent in the English dub of Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes, which emphasises his resemblance to a James Bond villain.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Given his twisted belief towards the idea of justice, as well as his Ineffectual Loner attitude, he doesn't and possibly never will understand The Power of Friendship and True Companions; those two ideas which various Ultra heroes including New Generation Heroes and the Tri Squad have frequently relied on. He mocks the idea and is quite clearly disgusted by mentioning the word "bonds", let alone showing it right in front of his face. Best shown in episode 16 of Ultraman Taiga, when Taiga manages to overcome the darkness through the power of bonds, he drops his scheming attitude and becomes a lot more irritable and deranged. Afterwards, he develops an intense hatred towards Hiroyuki and starts targeting him directly, but not before he hurts his friends, just for the sake of spiting him.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • To Ultraman Hikari. It's made even more apparent in the Blue Shadow novel, as they are both blue-bodied Ultras who gave in to the darkness after a fateful incident that changed their lives. Hikari became Hunter Knight Tsurugi out of his vendetta quest against Bogar, while Tregear became more cynical and nihilistic after overhearing Hikari and Belial's fall from grace, as well dismissing the concept of good and evil as nothing more but false beliefs, and willingly absorbed an all-powerful Kaiju into himself into becoming the most dangerous being in the universe. Unlike Tregear though, Hikari pulled a Heel Realization after being scolded by Zoffy for his lack of concern for the second life he was given by Mother of Ultra and reasoned by Ryu Aihara into releasing Kazuya Serizawa and reclaimed his identity as an Ultraman.
    • He is also this to the New Generation Heroes as a whole as they represent The Power of Friendship where the Ultras and their host have embodied their bonds they have for their respective close friends. As Tregear himself embodies The Power of Hate, he is presented as a Straw Nihilist and pathological sociopath whose loyalty is to no one but himself.
  • Eviler than Thou: Proves to be this to both the Villain's Guild and Alien Chibull Mabuze's forces in Taiga, the Guild are terrified of him thanks to his power and are reduced to non-factors when Tregear gets involved and he easily disposes of Mabuze and his forces using their own bioweapon, Imit-Belial, to boot.
  • Evil Is Petty: His act of corrupting Taiga in episode 15 after goading the latter into overusing the Kaiju Rings can be summed up as his brazen idea of giving Taro the middle finger. The same can be said in Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax when he does the same to Taro through Grimdo so he could enjoy at the sight of Taiga fighting his own father.
Tregear: You hear that, Number 6?! The darkness is devouring your son!
  • Evil Sorcerer: With Grimdo's power he's capable of performing vast magical feats such as possessing electronics, create kaiju-summoning artifacts, transform inanimate objects into monsters and so forth. He also employed his powers to create atrocities such as Leugocyte or empower people with magic like Mulnau.
  • The Exile: A self-imposed one, he eventually left the Land of Light in his youth once his faith and trust in the power of light and bonds was shattered leading to hi aimlessly wandering the universe before he made contact with Grimdo and subsequently absorbed the Dark God into himself.
  • Eye Beams: The Opto Dacrys, a pair of small beams fired from his red eyes.
  • Fallen Hero: He was an Ultraman from the Land of Light, but like Belial before him, Tregear was swayed from the path of good and becomes evil. The Blue Shadow novel revealed that his disappointment in Ultramen like Belial and Hikari, who was his mentor, being swayed from the path of good in addition to the later outright attacking him in a rage when he became Hunter Knight Tsurugi, and the Land of Light heroes' failure to ensure permanent peace in outer space is what turning him into the path of madness and led to him seeking out dark power for himself. Though he was already falling down the path as a result of his insecurities making him feel inadequate, especially compared to his Born Winner friend, Taro.
  • Fantastic Racism: Holds all other alien races in a low view, being rather dismayed to cooperate with alien invaders and wiping his hands clean anytime he makes physical contact with them. This view extends to humans as well, though it's far more pronounced thanks to their usual association with good Ultras.
  • Fatal Flaw: His envy towards other Ultras and their power, it is one of the main sources of Tregear's fall into darkness and drives his worst actions in the story as he desires to spite his former friend, Ultraman Taro by proving his power and that of bonds to be inferior and weak, which in turn accomplishes nothing for him besides alienating any and all connections and friends he might've had or even had such as Taro while also leading to his eventual death.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Be it in his Ultra or human form, Tregear always keeps a formal and friendly gesture, all while pissing off his enemies on a regular basis, all with a smile on his face and committing atrocities without any remorse.
  • Finishing Move: Trera Ultigizer, an attack which he summons five energy balls that unleash dark blue beams. Before his turn to evil, it was instead the Teracium Beam a variation of the original Ultraman's Spacium Beam.
  • Flower Motif: Kirisaki's actor, Kou Nanase, describes Tregear to be associated with the image of blue lotus. In Hanakotoba, blue lotus represents pure heart, divinity, estranged love and eloquence. Only the latter two traits that fit Tregear's personality, as a Manipulative Bastard who, deep down, carries a torch for his estranged friend, Taro.
  • For the Evulz: As far as his motives are concerned, almost everything he did in the franchise was only for his own amusement and enjoys seeing anyone suffer, both the good guys, neutral parties and even already evil aliens alike.
    • He also empowered Dark-Killer and Zero Darkness in the final scenes of Galaxy Fight just to screw the New Generation Heroes again.
  • Freudian Excuse: His increasingly worse youth brought about by the stress of learning the flaws in the Land of Light's ideals, a lack of support for his growing mental issues, a growing rift between him and Taro and his own mentor, Hikari, attacking him in a fit of rage after turning into a violent revenge-obsessed warrior became the main reason for his turn to evil.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Tregear was originally a Shrinking Violet Ultra with massive self-esteem issues and the only friend he could turn to was Ultraman Taro, who always overshadowed him, and was also a poor fighter who failed to become a member of the Space Garrison and had to relegate himself to being a scientist. But witnessing his mentor Ultraman Hikari becoming the vengeful Hunter Knight Tsurugi set him down the path that turned him into a nihilistic sociopath who believes that light and darkness are non-existent and becomes the physical embodiment of temptation, despair, death, and destruction and it only got worse once he merged with Grimdo and gained massive power after which he uses his newfound powers to spread ruin across the Multiverse.
  • Generation Xerox:
    • His past with Taro is basically a retread of Father of Ultra's with Belial. Its even acknowledged in-universe in the pre-premiere special Episode 0. They were friends with each other and had a very close bond before their insecurities led them both down a dark path that ended up driving them to not only be evil but also become spiteful of their former friends, seeking to hurt them in any way they can.
    • Like Belial as well, Tregear abandoned his identity as an Ultraman by merging with an ancient evil, effectively changing his appearance and gaining improvements in strength. He also employs several dark powers to either summon, control or create Kaiju.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Some of his attacks are Greek-based words. As is the basis of his name.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • He's the mastermind behind the League of Darkness in Ultra Galaxy Fight and is also the one who orders the kidnapping of Ultrawoman Grigio, which sets the motion of the miniseries. Tsuburaya did very little to hide his presence, however.
    • His feature novel reveals that he is responsible for Mulnau's development of crystal powers, which kickstarts the plot of Ultraman Orb's movie. He is also responsible for turning Leugocyte into an evil monster, which also means he's behind the original Rosso and Blu's deaths.
  • Haunted Technology: Tregear can taint technology pieces such as TVs with his essence turning them into potentially corruptive elements.
  • The Heavy: In New Generation Climax he does most of the heavy-lifting against the New Generation Heroes in Grimdo's steed. When the heroes defeat the Monster Army, he immediately offers himself to Grimdo, restoring the evil God's full power and getting absorbed with it.
  • History Repeats: Taro and Tregear's friendship drifting apart before the events of the series is a repeat of Father of Ultra and Belial's. It doesn't help that both he and Belial are the Villain Protagonists in Chapter 2 of Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy with their falls from grace being reflections of each others' own.
  • Hypocrite: In any scenes he's in, Tregear would be mad if anyone ever tried to classify the differences of light and shadow as if a person in real life demands for equal rights between races, yet as seen in episode 5, he calls Ultraman Fuma by his home world, Planet O-50 a la Fantastic Racism and shows a massive contempt for humans in general.
    I-R
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Ever since he was young, Tregear was a brilliant and gifted intellectual and yet all that intelligence also severely distanced him from his fellow Ultras. Even his Only Friend, Ultraman Taro, ended up drifting away when the latter started to rise up in the ranks of the Land of Light, which Tregear felt relegated him to trying to find a purpose by working for Hikari. The moment when he found out that Hikari turned cruel and ruthless following the attack of Bogarl on Arb ended up making him snap as he felt the last meaningful connection fade away and in turn led to his Start of Darkness.
  • I've Come Too Far: It's implied that Tregear's Redemption Rejection in the final episode of Taiga was because of how he reflected all of the atrocities he done before and that he risked facing the same fate of imprisonment as Belial did, preferring to be killed rather than return back to the light.
  • Jackass Genie: As a prequel novel reveals, Tregear following his corruption into evil, was responsible for destroying planets by tempting their inhabitants with wishes that backfired all while enjoying watching his victims suffer.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Tregear was originally as idealistic as other Ultras over the ideas that light triumphed against darkness, but seeing even his respected chief Hikari become the vengeful and aggressive Hunter Knight Tsurugi and discovering the fall from grace of Ultraman Belial drove him to the conclusion that darkness and light are meaningless and set him down the path of evil.
  • Joker Immunity: Absolutely nothing can kill this devil of a trickster at least permanently thanks to his powers from Grimdo. His feature novel reveals that its because of the ability to cheat death by having a body double from an alternate universe taking his place which he gained thanks to Grimdo's power. And ultimately subverted after Ultraman Taiga The Movie: New Generation Climax where his source of power is destroyed along with him for good, meaning that for the time being there will be no resurrections for him.
  • Karmic Death:
    • He spent years tearing apart families, killing many people, turning friends against each other and making anyone he could miserable solely because he desired to prove how useless "bonds" are. His penultimate death in Taiga comes from the Ultra that he tortured endlessly using the powers of his bonds with the other Tri-Squad members and Hiroyuki to defeat him.
    • Finally his last death comes at the hand of an Ultraman fusion made up of the bonds of all the New Generation Heroes, which easily overpowers the source of his power which he held in high steem and thought was superior to the light and bonds.
  • Kick the Dog: Befitting his Sadist nature, Tregear seems to enjoy killing or hurting anyone that his targets cherished. He kills Chibisuke/King Guesra and torments EGIS just to spite Hiroyuki, kills Black King to provoke Odyssa into his fighting spirit and slices the benevolent Alien Ghose's peaceful yet offset at the time Pandon into pieces when Taiga refused to kill that bird monster, even worse as Tregear is the one who caused its rampage in the first place.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: In episode 23 of Taiga he sets Imit-Belial on the building where Alien Chibull Mabuze and his underlings are hiding in, getting them crushed by the rubble of the collapsing building. While the act seems outwardly cruel, the group were criminal aliens who were planning to conquer the Universe using Devil's Splinters to create clones of Ultraman Belial and his other forms, therefore Tregear' killing of them is well-deserved.
  • Killed Off for Real: With the destruction of Grimdo, who reversed his and Tregear's previous merge by assimilating the Dark Ultra into himself, came the true end of Tregear now that his power source no longer exists and he died alongside it. Like Belial, his death has stuck and his only reappearance so far is a Parallel Isotope summoned by Absolute Tartarus.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His appearance in R/B The Movie is enough to nearly remove all lighthearted and humorous moments shifting the film into a serious direction, everywhere else anytime Tregear shows up, chances are that all hell breaks loose either because of his actions or because of what his general character brings around him. While he gets some sillier moments in future appearances, his appearance serves to indicate that things have gotten serious for the heroes.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: His intention to get Taiga corrupted was not only to serve as a middle finger to Taro, but to also goad him into fighting his own father. In the movie, he had Grimdo possess Taro for the sake of seeing both father and son fighting to the death. Its also confirmed in his title novel that he did this with Ultraman Rosso and his friend in Snake Darkness just to stir Katsumi Minato's heart and cause a fight with lethal results.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Even before he turned to evil, he was a loner among Ultras who was considered strange for his unusual interests in darkness, doing things such as seeking places coated in darkness auras and looking for anything that caught his eye and was powerful. This only got worse as he grew up and ended up drifting away from even his only friend, Ultraman Taro.
  • Maker of Monsters: Has the ability to create Kaiju through either people's emotions and objects or through Kaiju rings which he bonds to people in order to transform them into the selected kaiju.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: He's an evil Ultra who spreads ruin and misery for the sake of his twisted ideals and his amusement, heavily characterized by his jester-like mask.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was responsible for the events of Ultraman Orb: The Movie by giving Mulnau her crystallizing abilities as well as Ultraman R/B by brainwashing Leugocyte into a violent, evil monster which led to the original Rosso and Blu's deaths and everything that came after.
  • Manipulative Bastard: His MO is to manipulate situations and people so that they do things that will end up benefitting him and unintentionally cause their own downfalls, he will also manipulate even Retired Monsters or the emotionally vulnerable to drive them to evil actions for his amusement. But by far his most notable use of this is in his plans in Taiga where he spends half of the series corrupting the titular hero through his Kaiju rings and with some choice words to target his insecurities.
  • Mask of Sanity: In a literal and figurative sense, his human form Kirisaki serves to hide his ruthless and vicious personality while blending in among Earthlings. But, when he puts on the Tregear Eye and reveals himself, that's where he unleashes the raving lunatic that we come to know about him.
  • Meaningful Name: Translated from Ancient Greek words, Tregear is a merge of the words τρελός (Trelós) and περιέργεια (Periérgeia) which mean madness and curiosity respectively, befitting his nihilistic aim for destruction and ruin and darkly curious personality.
  • Mirror Character: He and Ultraman Belial are both disgraced Ultras from the Land of Light after becoming disillusioned by their ideologies. Belial would go on in his attempts to conquer the universe until he is stopped by his son, Ultraman Geed. Tregear would go on to commit a number of atrocities across the galaxy to enforce his contradicting beliefs of light and darkness and had run-ins with the New Generation Heroes until he is beaten by the combined might of the Tri-Squad and their New Generation predecessors. Both of their Parallel Isotope counterparts would eventually meet in Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy as members of The Kingdom.
  • Mook Maker: Can transform a random human into monsters with his darkness powers or by merging them with a Kaiju Ring.
  • Monster Clown: Has a jester motif in general with his pointed feet, penchant for chaos and his general sense of humor derived from malicious "trolling" of his foes. He is not comedic once he lets the facade down and is generally always a serious threat.
  • Monster Lord: Can create and command Kaiju through the Kaiju rings, or transform people into Kaiju and take control of them.
  • Mythology Gag: His penchant for corrupting others with the power of darkness, black and blue coloration, jester motif and red eyes brings in mind to Chaos Header's Chaos Ultraman form.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: He attempts to stop Taiga from feeding Woola with his energy and launched an energy ball attack, but Taiga fired a Wide Shot and combined it with Tregear's own attack to completely satiate Woola's hunger for good.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Ever since he was a child, the prospect of darkness and monsters always interested him and led to him trying to research about it which was seen by other Ultras in the Land of Light as a taboo. Once he abandoned his homeworld he carried this fascination to the next level, culminating in him absorbing Grimdo's power into his body and beginning his reign of terror.
  • Non-Action Guy: Played for Drama. Before gaining the power of Grimdo, being part of the blue tribe also meant that Tregear was one of the weakest and least-adequate combatants among the Land of Light's kin. He fails to enter the Space Garrison to catch up to his friend, Taro, and their drifting relationship is the fuel for his Start of Darkness.
  • Not Quite Dead: He survives his apparent deaths at the end of R/B The Movie and Taiga, though in the second one he ends up battered enough that his power source begins to leak away.
  • Only Friend: As a child, the young Tregear regarded Taro as his only companion (and perhaps more) despite his introversion. Every moment of friendship they shared in the past went down the drain after his Faceā€“Heel Turn, though even then Tregear is heavily implied to still hold some affection for Taro, even if both Ultras know they can't be friends anymore.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He's basically Affably Evil and a trickster, but when Ultraman Taro appears, he drops all the aforementioned traits showing either pure anger or hints of emotions such as sorrow and long-gone happiness.
Tregear: Don't act like some galactic guardsman! Who decided the light is justice?!
  • Out of Continues: Tregear cheated death countless times thanks to his powers from Grimdo that allowed him to use alternate universe duplicates to supplant every body destroyed. Once Grimdo is fully unleashed and he lets himself be absorbed by the Dark God, he can no longer use this power. When Grimdo is obliterated by Ultraman Reiga, Tregear dies for good with it.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: With Grimdo's power, Tregear can unleash destruction on a galactic scale even without any subordinate forces. Either by using his power directly, summoning kaiju, creating them, helping out evil forces or just making innocent people make deals with him that would end up destroying their worlds.
  • Power Limiter: The armor he wears not only serves as a cosmetic indicator of his current alignment, it also serves as means to contain Grimdo, the source of his powers and darkness. When the armor gets damaged by Taiga, it causes Grimdo's essence to start escaping and taking away most of Tregear's power.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: The novel Blue Shadow and Episode 5 of Absolute Conspiracy focuses on his younger years and how he eventually lost his grip on the light before embracing his Faceā€“Heel Turn and many subsequent evil acts he did to prove his new ideals.
  • Redemption Rejection: Taiga tries to offer him another chance of redemption by returning to their home world again. He quickly shot down the offer and prefers to be killed instead; he survives this near-death experience but it directly sets up his true final death in New Generation Climax.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes always shine red after his merge with Grimdo, to further this his eyes were blue before he turned evil.
  • The Resenter: Always secretly resented being a blue tribe Ultra whose power never would get close to that of Red Tribe Ultras, especially his friend Taro, as he always desired to be on the battlefield fighting evil. This was one of many factors that led to his distancing from Taro when the latter's Born Winner nature meant that he could not fully understand Tregear's issues and eventually turning to evil. Years after his fall from grace, he's heavily implied to still hold massive resentment against Taro for this and all other Ultras by extension.
    S-Z
  • Sanity Slippage: Even before his fall from grace, Tregear's mental stability was taking a nosedive as he felt his life crumble around him, from failing to catch up in power to his Only Friend, Taro, signified by his failure to become a member of the Space Garrison and having learned of Belial's fall from grace, the nail in the coffin for any and all semblance of stability he had was his respected chief, Ultraman Hikari, turning into the vengeful Hunter Knight Tsurugi out of anger and hatred and subsequently attacking Tregear in a blind rage.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: His chest part is meant to keep Grimdo's power and presence from escaping his body. After his defeat in Taiga, the seal starts to break away causing the evil God to leak out slowly and eventually causes him to lose most of his powers along with his immortality.
  • Shadow Archetype: Tregear is basically what Taiga would be like if he had lost sight of his ideals, had not met Titas and Fuma nor have bonded with Hiroyuki. It's even pointed out by Taro himself in Episode 0 and is taken literally when Tregear briefly corrupts Taiga in episode 15 to make him feel what it's like to be cold and alone with darkness slowly consuming him and his friends unable to do anything about but watch him being corrupted.
Ultraman Taro: If your heart is weak, you'll fall into the darkness just like Belial did, even as an Ultraman. Just like my old friend...
  • Shock and Awe: He has two abilities that allow him to blast opponents with powerful electric attacks, the aforementioned Trera Ultigizer and Trera Cheir Phos.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Has a mask-like design on his face, which is nigh-identical to Luin Lee/Mask from Gundam: Reconguista in G.
    • Additionally, R/B The Movie's plot has him attempting to collect negative human energies and create monsters based on drawings made by them. Coupled with Tregear turning Yukio into Snake Darkness, this makes him an Ultraman version of Khan Digifer or Alexis Kerib.
    • Tregear's general way of walking and talking is meant to evoke the way that a British villain from James Bond would do, complete with being voiced with a British accent in the English dub for Ultra Galaxy Fight: New Generation Heroes.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: As revealed in works after the run of Ultraman Taiga ended, Tregear created the Astral Particle Conversion System that allows Ultras to bond with any creatures to further assist them in their fight in the multiverse. That very device is the Taiga Spark.
  • Shrinking Violet: According to both the Blue Shadow novel and in Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy, Tregear's personality before his Faceā€“Heel Turn shows signs of inferiority complex — due to the fact he is a Blue Tribe Ultra and lacks the stamina to keep up with red ones like Taro; which leaves him in a state of self-loathing for that matter. Despite this, he makes up for his genius-level intellect; which only makes him unable to form mutual connection with others, let alone Taro himself.
    Young Taro: Who's that kid?
Taro's classmate: Oh, that blue one? He's always staring at the sky alone.
Another classmate: Even if you invite him to play, he will always be gone halfway.
    The rest: That's right.....
  • Sissy Villain: His mannerisms are very graceful and effeminate, such as his limp-wristed movements when tempting Yukio or daintily sitting on top of a building while watching Taiga fight Imitation Belial, and his backstory in Blue Shadow implies he's Ambiguously Gay. Notably, he only developed these mannerisms after he fused with Grimdo to achieve his current, Obviously Evil form.
  • The Sociopath: Tregear has a very warped worldview of good and evil. From what he lacks from Belial's impulse control and ego, Ultraman Tregear makes up for his superficial charm, intelligence, cunning and manipulation. That being said, Tregear has a very warped worldview of good and evil and this nihilistic mindset is rooted back from Belial and Hikari's descent into darkness before his own Start of Darkness. When he's not ranting about light and dark being non-existent, Tregear shamelessly manipulates and corrupts any living being into committing atrocities just for kicks, is incapable of empathy and has little to no understanding of why Ultramen are fighting to protect humans and other benign monsters alike.
  • Straw Nihilist: This is everything that Tregear stood for. Tregear's Start of Darkness also roots from overhearing both Belial and Hikari's fall from grace in the novel and later revealed to have been attacked by Hikari when the latter turned into Hunter Knight Tsurugi to boot. To him, good and evil, light and darkness are devoid of meaning. He also has a pathological urge to cause mayhem across the galaxy just to fuel his hatred for anything that resemble the "bonds" that every Ultra stands for.
  • Superpower Lottery: Thanks to absorbing Grimdo into himself, Tregear gained a lot of new powers in addition to his pre-existing Ultraman arsenal. Among these powers are: avoiding death by using alternate universe Tregears as replacement bodies for his consciousness, corrupting living beings, Eye Beams, possess electonic devices, and boosts to his already existing abilities such as beams, kicks and strength.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Ultraman Belial, as both Ultras originates from Nebula M78 and both were estranged from Father of Ultra and Taro, then followed suit by merging with an evil deity and using its power to spread ruin and cheat death over and over while menacing several heroes in various instalments. Director Masayoshi Takesue confirmed their similarities were intentional.
  • Suicide by Cop: His death at the end of Taiga had him open his arms and allow himself to be fired upon by Taiga Tri-Strium's Quattro Squad Blaster at full power, obliterating him. He survived this, but the sheer strain of the attack eventually leads to his death for good in New Generation Climax.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Tregear might be a messed up, sociopathic Straw Nihilist; but upon calling out Taro's name in a sorrowful voice just as before he is destroyed along with Grimdo evokes enough sympathy that Taro quietly calls out Tregear's name in response as he watches his old friend be killed for good.
  • Terrorist Without A Cause: He causes acts of destruction and chaos across the Multiverse, but he has no real grandiose purpose or end goal for them besides proving his delusions right, rather just wanting to cause the destruction out of spite against the entirety of the Land of Light and stick the middle finger to his former friend, Taro.
  • There Are No Therapists: No matter how clear and unsubtle his growing interest in darkness and evil, in addition to his budding insanity there was never any indication that Tregear received any form of mental therapy or guidance. Which only helped to worsen his situation up until it was too late and Tregear had fully descended into villainy.
  • Tragic Villain: Unlike Belial whose motivation is power and universal conquest and was shown later to not having been that good of a guy before his turn to evil, Tregear started out as a rather insecure and isolated individual despite his genius-level intellect and had only one person that he considered his friend, Ultraman Taro, but Taro's growing power caused their friendship to drift apart and then forced him to seek out help from Hikari, who then turned into the cruel Knight Tsurugi and attacked him in a fit of rage. Seeing Hikari and Belial going insane and turning away from the light and the ideals of the Land of Light was the last straw that turned him into the nihilistic mastermind that he is now today, with him going as far as merging with the ancient evil God Grimdo, so as to renounce his Ultraman identity. In his death throes, the last thing Tregear does before he and Grimdo are destroyed by Reiga was to cry out Taro's name in sorrow even though he himself knows he's beyond redemption.
  • Transformation Trinket: He has the Tregear Eye, which functions similarly to the Ultra Eye and Ultra Zero Eye. Episode 17 reveals that he can just morph freely into his Ultraman form at will, but that's the only instance we've seen of it. It seems to be his mockery of the Ultras' usual transformation devices. Although The Absolute Conspiracy shows that it was originally created to transform him into his fallen Ultra form.
  • Troll: He enjoys poking fun the Tri Squad, especially Taiga whom he called "son of Ultraman Taro" instead of his name to get on the young Ultra his nerves even further. In general, he can be considered a malicious troll whose torment of others is meant to either hurt them permanently or outright kill them.
  • Troll: Unlike Belial's tendency to zig-zag between Chaotic and Neutral or even Lawful Evil, Tregear is a firm force of evil chaos seeking destruction for the sake of it and having no plans to rule over anything or have an empire and his entire shtick is all based on malicious destructive "trolling" of his foes.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Before his outright turn to evil, Tregear went from an idealistic and positive Ultraman to a jaded and nihilistic neutral aligned Ultraman following his mentor Ultraman Hikari's fall from grace having lost all faith in the ideals that the Ultras held dear and choosing to aim the cosmos aimlessly pursuing answers to his doubts.
  • The Unfettered: He will do anything to get his points across, no matter how many lives are lost, how many suffer pointlessly and how much bridges he burns all is pointless to Tregear's pursuit of proving that the Land of Light's ideals are flawed fallacies.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Downplayed. Tregear was not always the nasty monster he became, in his earlier years and childhood the worst to come out of him was a severe lack of socialization skills and friends, which led to him being an isolated Ultra, though at the least he always held his fellow Ultras and their heroism in high steem. All of that slowly faded away over the years up until he became the villain he is nowadays.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Taro used to be the best of friends, and in Tregear's case Taro was his Only Friend, but after drifting away from Taro due to his growing perception of the light and darkness concepts of the Ultras as bogus concepts the two never recovered their friendship and over time became enemies once Tregear turned to evil.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Like Belial before him, as a result of his turn to evil, Tregear cannot go back home anymore, which he is well aware of.

Other Forms

    Kirisaki

Kirisaki

Tregear's human form, Kirisaki.
The human guise of Tregear, which the evil Ultra employs to spread ruin and devastation while going undetected by the Tri-Squad or anyone else on Earth. Dressed in a white and black coat, Kirisaki strikes from the shadows and slowly unravels his true plot as the series goes.
  • Aliens Among Us: Tregear's chosen form to roam around humanity undetected.
  • Deal with the Devil: Kirasaki's modus operandi is to lure aliens, both good and bad, into making deals with him so they cause destruction on Earth for his amusement.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Most of the time as Kirisaki, he is always seen eating his popcorn, biting a beef jerky, cracking walnuts and even drinking bubble tea while bearing witness of the ensuing chaos.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Kirisaki always sports a sinister smile.
  • Shout-Out: Kirisaki's habit of carrying balloons while standing in a place in a creepy fashion is similar to Pennywise, while his monochrome shirt leans on Monokuma. Likewise, their current appearance is merely a disguise and they have a penchant for inducing mental torture to their targets.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Other than the blue streaks on his hair, Kirisaki's appearance by itself doesn't gives away that he's Tregear human form thanks to its mundanity even with its colorful clothing.

    Parallel Isotope Tregear

Parallel Isotope Tregear

Tregear in his uncorrupted form, Early Style.
An alternate version of Tregear recruited by Absolute Tartarus under the promise of changing Tregear's original fate of becoming an evil Ultra that opposes Taro. He is partnered with a Parallel Isotope Ultraman Belial to help fight against the Ultras.
  • Alternate Self: To the original Tregear, with events diverging after his conflict with Hikari so that he joins Tartarus in his quest instead of absorbing Grimdo's power.
  • Blue Oni, Red Oni: The Blue to Belial's Red; he is calmer, less hammy, more analytical and even his motivations are far less reckless with Tregear planning to stop the future of him becoming a chaotic villain true in contrast to Belial wanting more power at all costs.
  • Deal with the Devil: This time with Absolute Tartarus instead of Grimdo, the villain gives him enough power to match Ultraman Zero.
  • Face Your Fears: Tartarus uses an Isotope Night Fang to forcefully make Tregear see visions of Taro abandoning him which is his greatest fear, as means of swaying the Blue Ultra to his side.
  • Foil: To his partner, Parallel Isotope Belial, both were once friends with a red tribe Ultra but fell to darkness due to admiring it and in here they both join Tartarus to avoid their main timeline fates. However, while Belial joins Tartarus out of self-interest in his own strength and to prevent his defeats and death, Tregear joins the Absolutian out of fear of eventually turning against Taro.
  • Future Me Scares Me: In contrast to Belial who goes mad from discovering his future, he's outright horrified to learn that his future will involve him turning against Taro and becoming an evil villain bent on ruin and chaos, taking up Tartarus' offer so as to avoid his fate.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Tartarus' interference changes the overall context of his downfall into evil, but the same thing that happened in the main timeline happens here as Tregear becomes evil and is granted power by an evil entity after leaving the Land of Light.
  • Karma Houdini: Like his employer and surviving teammates, Tregear gets away from Absolute Conspiracy without suffering any consequences for his involvement in Tartarus' plot.
  • Precision F-Strike: In the English dub of The Absolute Conspiracy, a frightened Tregear actually asks "Who the hell are you?" during his first meeting with Tartarus.
  • Villainous Friendship: He gets well along with the Parallel Isotope Ultraman Belial that he is assigned to work with by Tartarus, in stark contrast to his relationships with everyone else.
