Main Characters

    Uryuu Kamihate
Voiced by: Sounosuke Hattori (voice comic), Fumiya Imai (2nd promotional video), Ryōta Suzuki (anime)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/441085.jpg

The male lead of the story. A very studious high school student, Kamihate was given a new place to live at the Amagami shrine after spending years being left in the care of a child care facility. While somewhat abrasive, solitary, and narcissistic, he is shown to be quite a reliable guy to have around the household. Later on, he starts receiving visions of the future which will lead to his eventual union with one of the Amagami sisters.

  • Accidental Pervert: Uryuu sometimes ends up walking into or tripping himself over the most compromising of situations and positions of varying degrees of perverseness, even though its completely unexpected and he even tries to avoid it from happening.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Due to being the oldest kid in his orphanage, he would help take care of them and be a lot more considerate of their feelings. This trait is more apparent whenever he interacts with Asahi.
  • Book Smart: As a result of constant studying, he's quite the brainiac but still falters in some areas.
  • Boyfriend Bluff: Acted as Yae's bodyguard and boyfriend for a chapter when he was asked to accompany her at a college social gathering that involved alcohol.
  • Brutal Honesty: A defining characteristic as he isn't afraid to speak or talk about subjects in a stern manner and tone, regardless if its appropriate and if it means getting his point across.
  • Celibate Hero: As of right now, Uryuu would rather study and focus on his future career rather than make any attempts or advances in any romance whatsoever.
  • Character Development:
    • At first, Uryuu establishes himself as a Hollywood Atheist who is dismissive of such religious and spiritual beliefs and shuts down anyone who believes in such things by explaining and rationalizing it through scientific facts. However, after receiving the prophetic dreams, experiencing other strange phenomena, and by spending more and more time around the Amagamis, he softens up on his harsh, atheistic attitude and is much more understanding and respectful on the topic. He even later admits that he gets a feeling that there are gods watching over them.
    • Despite not wanting to get involved with the shrine's affairs, getting to know more about the Amagamis causes him to be more willing to get involved with the shrine's affairs whenever he feels they are in need.
  • Disappeared Dad: Any information about his father hasn't been addressed yet.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Ever since Chapter 5, Uryuu has been receiving strange prophetic dreams where he sees images of upcoming parts and events of the story of varying importance, but has a real hard time trying to figure out the meaning or context behind each future image where he only fully understands once it happens. He later receives important dreams about his own past and one of those dreams involves a certain Amagami sister.
  • Family of Choice: Albeit initially reluctant, Uryuu eventually comes to accept that he belongs to the Amagami temple and the sisters, and that he's part of their family. He fully intends to follow through with the betrothal, but it's yet to be seen whether he'll choose one of the sisters as his bride, or all of them for that matter.
  • First Kiss: Is given one by Yuna according to his dream in Chapter 14. It ended up being a case of an Accidental Kiss at the end of the same chapter but Uryuu managed to block it in the following chapter.
    • At the end of chapter 49, Asahi suddenly kisses him on the lips while also being given a sincere Love Confession by her.
  • First-Name Basis: Starts referring to the Amagami sisters by their first names since Chapter 27.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: He actually met Yae or what she was known by at the time, Reiko Ichijoji, many years ago as children and spent a very eventful day with her. It was only until that he accidentally learned of Yae's true name on her driver's license that he was able to realize and remember her all those years ago.
  • Foster Kid: Was only taken by the Amagamis due to their need of a heir. That said, he is quite grateful to his adoptees and pays them back with his help whenever he can.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Uryuu has became somewhat critical and dismissive of religious and spiritual beliefs after feeling that his prayers for his mother's health were left unanswered when he was younger. His atheism also clashes with Yuna's more devout faith which causes frequent friction between the two.
    • However, his atheistic attitude starts to shift once he starts receiving prophetic dreams.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's blunt, standoffish, and quite full of himself, but he's still a good guy and always tries to help out the Amagamis whenever they are in trouble or feeling down.
  • Not Blood Siblings: He's basically the Amagami sisters foster brother where the romantic tension/marriage prospects between him and them is considered to be not much of a issue due to him being just recently taken in and thus, did not grow up and being raised alongside them but also since Japanese law actually permits marriage between adopted siblings. note
  • Only Sane Man: He's new to the Amagami family's quirks and tries to sort out, and find deeper meaning to their little eccentricities.
  • Precocious Crush: Implied in regards to Mahiru, but its more likely he's just grateful to her for taking care of him and also sees her as a person of inspiration (why he chose to become a doctor in the first place).
  • The Reliable One: He does most of the household chores and is the one always looking out for the sisters.
  • Tsurime Eyes: To highlight his seriousness, sharpness, and selfdom.

    The Amagami Sisters
Voiced by: Miyu Tsuji (voice comic)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amagami_sisters.jpg

A trio of attractive shrine maidens, the Amagami sisters we're left to help take care of running their family shrine. Its expected that one of the sisters will marry Uryuu at some point in the future.

  • Arranged Marriage: Uryuu has to eventually marry one of them in order to continue living at the temple.
  • Happily Adopted: It turns out that none of them are actually blood related and that they also had different names and families prior to their adoption. Their adoptive mother, Chiharu, took care of and raised them quite well and they ended up becoming one big happy family.
    • For Yae's case: She was cast out from her original, much more restrictive family and after being taken in by the Amagamis, she has found a lot more freedom and happiness with them instead.
    • For Asahi's case: Both her parents were extremely neglectful towards her, and had zero qualms in leaving her with the Amagamis. However, doing so turned out to be beneficial for her, as she was able to put her Dark and Troubled Past behind her.
  • Important Hair Accessory: They always wear traditional red braided kumihimo cords to tie their hair and they greatly treasure them as they were keepsakes from their late mother. The only times they take them off is whenever they go to sleep.
  • Miko: All three sisters work and live at their family's Shinto shrine as shrine maidens.
  • Temporal Theme Naming: All are named after certain periods in a day with Yae being named after nighttime, Yuna being named after evening, and Asahi being named after morning.

    Yae Amagami
Voiced by: Ai Kayano (1st promotional video), Reina Ueda (2nd promotional video), Sumire Uesaka (anime)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yae_amagami.jpg

The eldest sister. A 2nd-year university student studying the arts. She can be surprisingly ditzy and childish for her age, but there is a lot more to her than meets the eye.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's nice and childish young woman, but she will put her foot down in a very scary tone with a very scary smile on her face if you misbehave, and will kick your ass if you dare try to get physical with her.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Unsurprisingly for a well-endowed woman in a shonen harem series, her large chest is played for jokes on occasion.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Her chest is much bigger than those of the other female characters, and it's sometimes a source of praise and envy.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: She gets tipsy very, very quickly.
  • Funbag Airbag: In the first chapter, Uryuu's face makes contact with her almost bare breasts when she accidentally walks into him on the other side of the door.
  • Genius Ditz: Despite acting like a total airhead, Yae is surprisingly talented in a few different areas with art and crafts being her specialty, but is also pretty good in martial arts and mental math. The reason she is so multi-talented stems from all of the lessons enforced onto her when she was with her original family.
  • Happily Adopted: She turns out to be a case of this in the "True Colors of the Night" arc before its later revealed that Yuna and Asahi were also adopted.
  • Ojou: What she used to be, being profoundly unhappy and resigned to her fate. Then she met Uryuu, bringing color into her life.
  • Running Gag: Whenever Uryuu has to wait for Yae for something, chances are that its going to take much longer than expected, usually because mentally or physically, she's off somewhere.
    • In Chapter 5, he waits outside her room so she can get changed... only for an hour and a half to pass and by the time he barges in, she's long gone.
    • In Chapter 9, he tasks her to create designs for the festival... only for her to procrastinate and get it done two days later around the deadline, something that he calls her out for.
    • In Chapter 20 by using his future visions that allowed him to find her, he waits at the exact spot that she will end up at... only to sit for three hours straight just waiting for her to arrive.
    • In Chapter 21, he sits by waiting for her to get a drink from a nearby vending machine... only to realize 30 minutes have passed without her ever picking a drink.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Out of all her sisters, she's the one that greatly resembles their late mother, sharing the same long black hair and voluptuous figure.
    • The resemblance is great enough that Uryuu even mistook the sudden appearance of Chiharu Amagami's spirit for her, only for him not being able to distinguish the two due to him urgently leaving the room and the fox masks that everyone was wearing at the time.
    • As a child, she even looks like a much younger version of her biological mother.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Just because she stopped going by her original name of Reiko Ichijoji doesn't means that she legally changed it, such as the case for her driver's license.
  • That Man Is Dead: She has long ditched her name as Reiko Ichijoji and instead has taken on the new name that her adopted mother gave to her.
  • Trash of the Titans: Her room is always littered with her artwork, art supplies, manga, and other kinds of junk. Uryuu mentions that he's been cleaning it up every single morning.
  • Womanchild: Despite her age, Yae is one of the bigger kids in the story as she is a very silly and ditsy person who frequently wanders off somewhere and easily loses track of her thoughts and actions. The reason for this is because after being freed from the grips of her original family and being adopted by the Amagamis, she finds herself easily overwhelmed and lost by this newfound freedom of hers that she greatly longed for and missed out on for most of her childhood.

    Yuna Amagami
Voiced by: Sora Amamiya (1st promotional video), Rie Takahashi (2nd promotional video), Kaede Hondo (anime)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuna_amagami.jpg

The middle sister. A 2nd-year high school student with her fair share of admiration. She can be a little harsh and serious at times, but she is very devout in her faith and tries to give it her all in her shrine duties.

  • Bad Liar: Lying ain't exactly her forte as she's quite easy to read and stumbles over any attempts at hiding something.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She easily gets delighted if cats are around or even mildly suggested.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In one of her attempts to convince Uryuu to leave the household, she has him do their laundry in the hopes that he'll get really irritated by it... only to realize too late that he'll have to handle and clean their bras and panties.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: A combination of being a top student, a shrine maiden, good looking, and acting very tender and polite around others, Yuna managed to attract a fair share of admirers at the all-girls school (now co-ed) that she goes to.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite presenting herself as the most mature, sensible, and devout of her siblings, she does have her lighter moments.
    • In Chapter 22, despite dismissing a pillow fight as something that is way beneath her, she is quick to join in on the action.
    • She partakes in doing fun little tricks against Uryuu alongside her sisters throughout Chapter 31.
    • During their second Tanabata festival, she finds herself enjoying a Princess Orihime themed cosplay despite Uryuu assuming that wouldn't be on board with such an idea.
  • Running Gag: When not surrounded by so many people, she throws salt at Uryuu whenever she catches him or gets caught up in his Accidental Pervert moments.
  • Serious Business: Out of all the sisters, Yuna takes her duties and faith as a shrine maiden much more seriously than the others. While the uncertain fate of the shrine is something that understandably weighs on her mind a lot, it is pointed that maintaining a constant devotion to her shrine means that she can't find time to relax, does impulsive actions, and makes everyone worry for her.
  • Tsundere: The Harsh type. She gets unnerved with Uryuu due to their clashing beliefs, headstrong and stubborn natures, and his accidental perversions, but nevertheless, she does soften up on him.

    Asahi Amagami
Voiced by: Ayane Sakura (1st promotional video), Ayana Taketatsu (2nd promotional video), Shion Wakayama (anime)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asahi_amagami.jpg

The youngest sister. A 3rd-year junior high school student and star track-and-field athlete. She likes to tease Kamihate a lot and attempts to act more mature than she actually is.

  • Accent Slip-Up: Chapter 127 reveals she possesses a Kansai dialect, which she slipped into after seeing her birth father in person.
  • A-Cup Angst: Despite proclaiming herself as a cutie, she isn't that fond of her much smaller assets and doesn't like it when its pointed out. While trapped in a "Groundhog Day" Loop with Uryuu, she is willing to follow exercise videos that proclaim to help make your boobs get bigger.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's one of the younger characters and she still acts and gets treated like a little kid at times. However, she isn't really fond of still being treated like a child and thus, tries to get others to see her as more of a grown-up by acting more mature and dismissing certain things as "childish".
  • Claustrophobia: In Chapter 3, its revealed that she suffers from this fear.
  • Determinator: No matter what, she will put her all into whatever she's doing, whether it be her academics or sports, or something she's hopelessly not good at, like learning how to type.
  • Given Name Reveal: Chapter 128 reveals her real name to be Miyuki Kiyomizu.
  • Hopeless with Tech: She's not very tech-savvy, especially when it comes to typing on her phone or the computer. On her phone, she's very frequent to making typos, while on the computer, she has to rely on a hunt-and-peck style of typing. She's trying to improve on the latter at the very least.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In Chapter 41, she calls out Yae for lounging in Uryuu's room and how indecent it is... only for Yuna to point out that she is more guilty of doing such an act.
  • In-Series Nickname: She's known as the "Twilight Princess of Running". This originates from her childhood after being left behind by her parents, where she would constantly run to blow off pent-up steam.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She's a track-and-field star, and has been consistently at the very top of her game since elementary school.
  • Parental Abandonment: As shown in Chapters 127-128, both of Asahi's parents are very neglectful. Her birth mother would constantly travel overseas for years at a time for work, leaving both her husband and Asahi behind in Japan, and not giving two shits about either of them. Her birth father was not any better, as he himself was heads-over-heels for his wife, regardless of the ill-treatment he received from her. Combined with his work, he had no time to tend to Asahi, often leaving her at a nursery. When she finds out she's being left in the care of the Amagami family, she only learns via a note from him, who at that time just up and left her behind to follow his wife.
  • Proud Beauty: She knows she's cute and likes to draw attention to it.
  • She's All Grown Up: Through a brief glimpse in Chapter 23 and then fully shown in the following omake, Asahi has greatly matured since her junior high school days.
  • Little Sister Heroine: Her dynamic with Uryuu could be summed up as this.
  • Love Confession: After breaking out of the "Groundhog Day" Loop and while watching the fireworks with Uryuu at the end of chapter 49, Asahi gives him his First Kiss while also earnestly telling the young man that she likes him.
  • The Tease: She really likes to get close to and act like a little nymph around Uryuu.

    Chidori Amagami
Voiced by: Sounosuke Hattori (voice comic)

The Amagami sisters grandfather and chief priest of the Amagami shrine who is responsible for bringing in Uryuu to live at their household to serve as a potential heir.

  • Cool Old Guy: He's an easy-going and caring elder who loves his granddaughters and treats Uryuu as if he was family. That said, he's not above playing with manipulative and submissive tricks to get Uryuu to stick around the household.

    Chiharu Amagami

  • Posthumous Character: She has long since passed away before the start of the series.

    Ginji Kiyomizu

Asahi's birth father, who works as an international journalist.

Others

    Mahiru Anekoji

The housemother and live-in doctor of the Kiseki-en Residential Child Care Facility, the place that Uryuu grew up in. She looked after little Uryuu while his mom wasn't around and her actions inspired our male lead to chase his dream in becoming a doctor. She was also the one who found the Amagami shrine for him in the first place.

  • Hospital Hottie: She's quite pretty looking, something that Asahi and Yae have noted on.

    Miemon Kitashirakawa

The manager of Kyoto Traditional Industries Association which sponsors the Amagami shrine.

  • Arc Villain: For the "Amagami Shrine Annual Festival" arc, as he instigates and pushes the arc's conflict by terminating their sponsorship contract with the Amagamis. He even tries to covertly interfere with the festivities after taking on Uryuu's challenge over the shrine's future.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are always closed and it just adds to his unsettling nature.
  • Graceful Loser: After taking on Uryuu's challenge over the Amagami shrine's future and seeing them make great success in drawing in visitors, he gives the main cast credit for their merits and efforts, and upholds his end of the promise by continuing to sponsor the shrine for now.
  • Jerkass: He's a haughty and unpleasant fellow who is not above making insensitive comments about the Amagami sisters late mother.
    • However, he is willing to help Uryuu out in arranging the Amagamis second Tanabata festival given that he has proven himself to him earlier and it would also lead to more profits.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He maybe an asshole, but from a business stand point, he still has a legitimate standing about the plummeting profitability of the Amagami shrine. After all, why should anyone bother continue to invest any resources into a declining business that offers little to no kickback.
  • Smug Smiler: He always have has an arrogant smirk on his face to reinforce his unpleasant and condescending attitude.

    Yomiko Tsukigami

A senior priest at the Tsukigami shrine and mentor to the Amagami sisters. She is well acquainted with the Amagami family and their shrine.

    Karen Matsugazaki

Asahi's classmate and fellow track-and-field ace. She is a member of the affluential Matsugazaki Conglomerate and is a very determined rival to Asahi.

  • Always Someone Better: No much how much effort she puts into it, she always finds herself falling behind Asahi in their races.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When boasting of her own parents during her school's bring-a-parent day, she asks Asahi where is her parents... only for a classmate to tell her that Asahi's parents aren't around in which case, its something that she genuinely apologizes later on.
  • The Rival: She is Asahi's number one and most persistent sprinting rival.

    Makoto Takeda

Yae's longtime best friend who is a Kyoto University Med Student. She's very protective of her bestie and dislikes Uryuu's attempts to find more about Yae.

  • Best Friend: Yae's longtime bestie since forever. She also knows her bestie's old identity of Reiko Ichijoji. It’s later revealed that her family has been a long-time vassal family of Yae’s old family. Despite Yae renouncing her old family name, she remains steadfastly loyal by her side.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Out of all the characters, she notably wears a pair of spectacles who just so happens to be studying medicine at a top level university.
  • The Stoic: For the most part, she's a calm, level-headed, and serious person who only starts to emotionally unravel by just a bit whenever Yae is in serious trouble.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Has them to show how much of a sharp and serious person she is.

    Reiko Ichijoji (SPOILERS!)

Yae's original identity before being adopted into the Amagami household. She met Uryuu several years prior to the start of the series and their chance meeting sparked a significant change inside her.

  • Abusive Parents: Her biological mother was a Control Freak and Education Mama from a very affluential family who isolated and forced Reiko to take part in endless amounts of lessons and marriage talks, all done to whip her into becoming a proper member of the Ichijoji family, even if it was against her wishes. She had attendants always looking after Reiko and never granted her any sense of freedom whatsoever. It was only until Reiko defied her one too many times that she finally decided to cast her daughter out from the Ichijoji household, family, and ever bearing the name.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Always had these as a child and its only when she vented out some other kind of feeling or emotion that her eyes become a lot livelier.
  • The Eeyore: Her spirit is always down in the gutter due to the strict and uncaring nature of her family.
  • Fish out of Water: Due to her isolated upbringing and having other people do things for her, she's pretty clueless about a lot of things outside her household such as not knowing on how to use money or even a swing for that matter.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She had an eventful encounter with Uryuu many years ago and the time she spent with him and his reassuring words stuck with her for quite awhile. It wasn't until they meet again as young adults, learning each other's true identities, and reconnecting caused Yae to fully commit her love to Uryuu.
  • Hates Their Parent: She isn't too fond of her mother at all.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Almost says this trope verbatim as she wants to escape from the high expectations and suffocating shackles of her mother and the Ichijoji family. She was finally able to get her wish after defying her mother one too many times.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She always looks unhappy.
  • The Stoic: She expresses little emotion during her time spent with Uryuu and he believes she is like a robot in a sense.
  • When She Smiles: Whenever she feels a hint of happiness, she can give off a simple but pleasant smile.
    Shirahi Tsuruyama
An old friend and rival of Uryuu's from the orphanage.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Unlucky variant. She knew Uryuu from childhood and has liked him ever since, but Uryuu was oblivious and firmly saw her as another guy. Her wish to Kurogami changes reality to one where she grew alongside and dates Uryuu, but the guy rejects her and her new reality in favor of the Amagamis.
  • Put on a Bus: She evaporates from the story shortly after Uryuu returns to his original universe, explained away as her focusing her studies on medical school instead. When we next see her meet up with the main cast, Uryuu further explains that Shirahi was keeping her distance partially out of guilt for the results of her arc.
  • She Is All Grown Up: When Shirahi was a kid, she looked more androgynous and Uryuu pretty much saw her as a little sister. He is wowed by her when she returns as a teenager, and while she still wears some masculine clothing, is not shy about presenting herself as feminine and flirty this time.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: It seems the whole purpose of her arc is to prove to her, and to Uryuu, that changing his fate to be married to the Amagami household was never going to happen. Even in the world where he dates her, he was constantly thinking about the bond he shared with the Amagami sisters in the old world and outright tells Kurogami that he wants to go back there even at the risk of losing his chance with Shirahi forever.
