    Ryoka Dawning Griffin

No Class

Ryoka Griffin is the secondary protagonist of The Wandering Inn. She has 4th Dan in Muay Thai and is a Runner who goes barefoot whenever possible. Chapters focusing on her sometimes have an R next to them.

  • Action Girl: She has 4th Dan in Muay Thai, and is both a parkour and distance runner. She has gone up against an armored Silver-Rank Adventurer barehanded, and once made a Minotaur cough up blood.
  • Ambiguously Bi: When Fierre uses her Hypnotic Eyes on Ryoka, she internally claims not to be bisexual, but as Fierre leans in for a kiss she frantically admits that everyone's somewhere on the spectrum regarding that. Fierre sneezing kills any possible mood, and they both laugh it off.
  • Badass Normal: With no Classes, Levels or Skills, Ryoka still manages to be extremely capable of both getting into, and surviving dangerous situations including Eldritch Abominations of The Winter Solstice, Dragons, and the Necromancer's armies.
  • Blow You Away: After Ivolethe's death, she gains some control over wind, making it instinctively blow more in her presence, give her consistently favorable tail-winds, and kick up a defensive dust storm. No tornadoes yet though.
  • Broken Tears: After losing to Teriarch in a battle of riddles for a favor. After his Super-Intelligence lets him breeze through her logic puzzles and paradoxes, she breaks down in tears, admits defeat, and begs him to save Erin anyways. Taken off guard by what he had considered a friendly competition against a semi-Worthy Opponent, he quickly agrees.
  • Courier: Her job as a City Runner delivering letters and packages. Courier is the title for Runners considered to be Gold or Named-rank. In 7.59, she is officially made a Courier.
  • Deal with the Devil: Belavierr offers her a deal in order to see Ivolethe, and a Wyrm offers to tell her a prophecy about her. She refuses both.
  • Determinator: She is capable of running over 80 miles at below a 4-minute-mile pace (while evading three ambushes) to deliver a message, meeting the speed qualification to be a Courier without any Classes or Skills.
  • Down the Rabbit Hole: The climax of Volume 7 has her make it into the Land of Faerie.

  • Fairy Companion: Ivolethe is a Winter Fairy who decides to genuinely befriend Ryoka, as she finds her interesting. Ivolethe tries to teach her the nuances of Fairy Magic, and both enjoy exchanging barbs with each other.
  • Fingore:
    • A Goblin bites off her pinky and ring finger during her rescue of Mrsha. Later, an Eldritch Abomination gives her fully-functional fingers back to her... still disconnected. She promptly throws them into a campfire out of horror.
    • Later, Venitra breaks several of her fingers while interrogating her about Az'kerash.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: She is the most paranoid Otherworlder regarding doing this.
  • Grin of Audacity: As a Challenge Seeker, she sports one while running through the High Passes while chased by Griffons, and later when fighting a Silver-Rank Adventurer bare-handed.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Coming from an admittedly self-inflicted Friendless Background, she is very protective of the friends she has made. The only times the normally stoic girl has had Heroic BSoD are when her friends have died, or she believes they're in immediate danger of doing so.
  • I Know Your True Name: Since the name on her birth certificate was written in Kanji, most scrying spells don't work on her.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Ryoka knows a lot but her dislike of people, belief that she alone can fix things, and unwillingness to ask for help has caused many of her plans to blow up in her face and required her to be bailed out.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though heroic and (usually) well-meaning, her pride, anti-social tendencies, and general mistrust of authority often put her at odds with others, even people who are actually trying to make friends with her. This fades somewhat after she meets Erin and her friends and begins to rely on them, but even then she's rather aloof and prone to keeping to herself.
  • Le Parkour: As part of her Former Teen Rebel status, she became skilled enough at Parkour to evade a lower-level [Assassin] in a Roofhopping chase.
  • Magic Must Defeat Magic: Ryoka's Faeblade is an extraordinarily advanced technology from another universe, which emits a hardlight blade that can slice through anything and everything mundane... except for anything magical or enchanted. The blade will immediately break upon contact with even the weakest of magic spells, so even though it can quickly generate a new one, it's not Anti-Magic.
  • Mouth Stitched Shut: Courtesy of Belavierr after annoying the immortal [Stitch Witch] with too many questions. Made extra nasty by using near unbreakable string to do so.
  • Mutual Envy: She is jealous of Erin's social ability, while Erin is jealous of her physical ability and 'adventurous' lifestyle.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After fighting with the Horns of Hammerad (who had saved her leg from amputation a few weeks before), she has this before realizing she's at least partially being influenced by a spell.
  • The Prophecy: Several fey mention that there is a potential prophecy surrounding her, but they mention it is a phrophecy of "ifs", not certainties.
  • Put on a Bus: Ryoka, just before the conclusion of Volume 4, flees Liscor after her altercations with the Necromancer finally come crashing down on her and start killing people. She remains gone as the story moves to Volume 5 and continues not to appear until the volume's epilogue.
  • Run or Die: Ryoka has been in this situation multiple times. Ranging from through the High Passes while being chased by the whole Food Chain of Evil that resides there, to running through the armies of The Necromancer, to evading the entirety of Izril's Assassin's Guild. It's lampshaded in the Volume 2 April Fools' chapter.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: In Volume 7 she helps save the sons of Tyrion Veltras from an assassination attempt. This starts a cycle of favors and stubbornly-perceived debts and gratitude for said favors. After a bit, Tyrion realizes he wants to court the woman who saved his children.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": The first use of Rainbow Speak in the web serial is the bright red crunch of her leg breaking under a wagon wheel.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: As a prisoner of Ailendamus, Ryoka managed to annoy all of the Knights assigned to guard her to the point where, as an apology, she offers to spar with them as an excuse for them to vent out their frustrations back on her. The following events aren’t described explicitly but apparently devolved to the point where all involved parties were in danger of being stripped off their ranks on charges of indecency.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Her attitude towards most people in the early volumes is to look down on them if not call them this outright, though this comes more from a place of her own arrogant view of the world than people being actual idiots.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her taking a delivery request in the High Passes indirectly leads to the deaths of Wall Lord Ilvris' Lieutenant, Krisha's nephew, Ulrien of Griffon Hunt, and several others.
  • Weirdness Magnet: On good terms with a dragon, considered a person to watch by a legendary [Necromancer], and friends with a Winter Fairy, and a Vampire.
  • What Would X Do?: Starts to do this with Erin Solstice after Volume 5 in an attempt to curb her self-destructive tendencies.
  • Willfully Weak: Ryoka chooses not to gain any Classes, Levels or Skills, despite their obvious advantages. Doing this is so counter-intuitive that most characters are shocked when they find out. She does this because she suspects the System imposes some kind of restriction and alteration in those who embrace it.

    Laken Godart

[Emperor]

A blind young man transported into a forest in northern Izril, and taken in by Durene, a half-troll. He declares himself emperor of her cottage on a whim. This soon escalates to him becoming Emperor of the Unseen Empire containing many villages in Northern Izril. Chapters focusing on him often have an E next to them.

  • Blind and the Beast: Laken, a blind Earther, to the consternation of the locals, immediately befriends Durene, a half-troll girl, and they soon enter into a relationship.
  • Blind Seer: He can "see" all of his domain at any given time, including underground, under snow, in the dark, or miles away.
  • Charm Person: As an [Emperor], he can exert his presence and force of will to a great extent.
  • Deal with the Devil: He is tricked into taking Tamaroth's hand when reaching for his guide cane.
  • The Emperor: He declared himself Emperor of Durene's cottage (in the spirit of Norton I, the self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico), and actually became an [Emperor].
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: His efforts to defend the region from the Great Mountain City Tribe's raids are largely noble. Then, he ambushes the Flooded Waters Tribe simply because they're goblins. This leads to large sections of the region being burned, a human city falling in under two hours, his army taking heavy casualties, and him being forcibly conscripted into attacking Liscor. Afterwards, he is horrified at the realization that Goblins are truly sentient.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: His Skills allow his people to be more productive, sleep better, train as a militia easier, etc. His sight ability lets him direct battles, spot ambushes, and even find rat dens provided he has a totem in the area.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: He is dating Durene, a half-troll, who is one of the kindest people he has ever met.
  • Undying Loyalty: His Skill [Undying Loyalty] allows people who have been mortally wounded to continue to fight after their heart has stopped or with injuries that should leave them entirely unable to continue. Unfortunately, the effect ends with the battle.

Chandrar

    Trey and Teresa Atwood
A set of twins who appear in Chandrar inside the throne room of Flos, King of Destruction. This awakens his drive for battle, and he promptly conscripts them into service as retainers. Chapters focusing on them often have a K next to them.

As twins:

Trey Atwood | [Mage] > [Sand Mage] > [Bloodglass Mage], [Plotter] > [Chaos Schemer]

  • Sand Blaster: Trey begins learning magic, specializing in this. After his throat was slit by the Quarass, this gets upgraded to "Lifesand", a specialized form of Blood Magic.

Teresa "Teres" Atwood | [Warrior] > [Blademaster] > [Blade of War], [Rider]

  • Blood Knight: Comes to develop a taste for battling under Flos's service. It's one of the things Trey is resentful of Flos for because of this violent change.

Baleros

United Nations Company

    Geneva Scala

[Doctor], [Telepath]

aka: The Last Light of Baleros

A 24-year-old woman in her third year of med-school who appeared alone in the jungles of Baleros. She signs onto a mercenary company out of desperation as a [Doctor], an odd subclass of [Healer] few have ever heard of. She is eventually joined by several Otherworlders to form the United Nations Company. Chapters focusing on them often have a D next to them.

  • All Your Powers Combined: A Selphid possessing a living host maintains their own Classes, Levels, and Skills in any part of the body they are actively controlling, while the host keeps theirs when in control themselves. This ability to multi-class meant their species once took over the world in an "Enslaved Empire".
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: Geneva is thrust into a fantasy-medieval war with the goal of saving lives on the battlefield with no tools than what she can make. She is usually coated in blood from her patients, not to mention having to do triage with friends in the line. After four battles, she has severe trouble showing any emotion.
  • Eagleland: A large group of Otherworlders who came through a few weeks after Geneva have a vocal majority of Too Dumb to Live walking American stereotypes.
  • Fictional United Nations: "Rules of War" exist, but are hardly enforced in Baleros. The establishment of the Red Cross Company and the United Nations Company by various Otherworlders are an effort to fix that.
  • Find the Cure!:
    • Selphids, as a species, hope Geneva's unique knowledge and skills will help discover a treatment for "the wasting", an unspecified condition that's slowly killing them.
    • Yellow Rivers is a new magical illness that The United Nations Company is working to cure.
  • Harmful Healing: The main reason a [Doctor] has any actual role in a world full of [Healers] are the gruesome results of healing the flesh around or over certain things, and diseases that benefit more from Healing Potions than people do.
  • Healing Factor: The fact that Geneva is alive means Okasha can rampage (push the host body beyond it's normal limits at the expense of damaging muscles) much better and more often than Selphids residing in corpses.
  • The Medic: The aptly named Geneva was in her third year of med school when she appeared in Baleros, and soon becomes a [Doctor].
  • Mundane Utility: Okasha can burn excess fat and lightly tear Geneva's muscles, resulting in peak physical condition and a six-pack without any actual exercise.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Geneva is very uncomfortable contemplating any form of intimacy since Okasha took up residence. Okasha's offers of hormone or physical "help" notwithstanding.
  • STD Immunity: Averted. Like other illnesses, sexually-transmitted diseases are actually strengthened by healing potions. The United Nations Company decides to start making and selling condoms to combat the recent outbreak of a STD called "Yellow Rivers".
  • Symbiotic Possession: With the Selphid Okasha after her back is broken.
  • Tournament Arc: The Titan's Game is this for Niers' [Strategist] School. Part of his machinations for this is to get Geneva to visit his headquarters to tend to friends with injuries, and to gather information on Otherworlders.
  • War Is Hell: Baleros is ruled by ever-shifting alliances of mercenary companies with no Fictional Geneva Conventions and no compunctions about targeting healers. Injuries are described in great detail, and the triage and surgeries Geneva performs are horrifying even to hardened veterans.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: The [Doctor] had to deal with quite a few during her time as the Last Light; Evercut Arrows break off in a target's body and keep burrowing deeper unless removed, while some types of gas-based attacks are untreatable with Geneva's equipment.

    The Singer of Terandria's Band

Rhir

The Blighted Kingdom

    Thomas

[Clown] > [Mad Clown], [Hero]

Better known as Tom, he is an overweight guy with the [Clown] Class who was summoned with a large group of Otherworlders by The Blighted King in Rhir. Chapters focusing on him often have a C next to them.

  • Doppelgänger Attack: Tom gains the ability to manifest an exact copy of himself.
  • Evil Laugh: He gets one in chapter 1.01C. For full effect, make sure your reading device has sound enabled.
  • Fighting Clown: A literal and particularly vicious example.
  • Hammerspace: A Skill allows him to act as if he's pulling anything in a five-meter radius out of thin air into his hands. This includes an enemies' weapons from their hands.
  • Horrifying the Horror: After his psychotic break, Tom terrifies a group of demons who'd just slaughtered a village full of civilians and children.
  • Insanity Immunity: Tom and the Gloomless Troupe are the only one's not effected by The Death of Magic's mind confusion spell.
  • Laughing Mad: After seeing Wilen slowly die, something snaps inside of Tom, driving him to insanity. He starts to laugh crazily and changes from the rather unfunny clown to a clown such as one sees in horror movies, making even the demons fear him. Later, Tom has the Condition [Horrific Laughter].
  • Lethal Joke Character: A fight between Tom and the court [Fool] has explosive fireballs being put into Hammerspace and pulled out from behind enemy's ears, and takes out a high-level Time Master, Demon [Archer], and Demon [Teleportation Mage] in the process.
  • Monster Clown: He starts out as a rather ineffectual Non-Ironic Clown trying to cheer people up, gaining the [Clown] Class in the process. It isn't until Demons invaded the village he and his fellow [Heroes] were staying in, killing a child he knew, and causing him to go Ax-Crazy and fight them off he earned the [Lesser Insanity] Condition. Things went downhill for his mind from there.
  • Nominal Hero: The entire "American Group"—Tom included—summoned to Rhir gained the legendary [Hero] Class before most lost it either to death, perceived cowardliness, etc. After his Freak Out and killing Demons that invaded the village he stayed in, Tom manages to actually level up this Class before everyone else does, even if his behavior is a far cry from what's conventional.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: Tom has [Weapon's Proficiency: Knives], which his insane self uses to great effect. Even his sane self has a fascination with them, to the rest of his group's shared unease.
  • Terror Hero: Attempts this against a specialist subset of Demons who are literally unable to feel fear. They become so confused and unnerved that they end up retreating anyways.

The Demon Kingdom

    Flora

[Gunslinger]

An Earther from Texas who uses a revolver. She was responsible for healing Silvenia's wounds with an epinephrine injector, and now lives with the Demons.

Wistram Academy

    Aaron Vanwell

[Mage]-[Engineer] > [Magictech Engineer]

A young man who appeared in Wistram Academy and nicknamed himself Blackmage.

  • Ascended Fanboy: As a big fan of the Harry Potter series and the 8-Bit Theater Web-Comic, he was ecstatic to find himself in Wistram Academy. This results in a Broken Pedestal as he comes to realize how Wistram's various factions are using people from Earth as Unwitting Pawns.
  • Geek: To the point where he decided to call himself "Blackmage" after his favorite Fantasy Web-Comic character. His first Magitek creation in a lightning gauntlet inspired by Iron Man.
  • Magitek: He has begun making some simple Artifacts such as a magical battery to aid in lightning spells.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • He set up a temporary chatroom to try to contact and coordinate with other people from Earth. Not only was this largely unhelpful, several people were tricked into giving their full name, which an entity that was impersonating an Earther used to scry, and likely kill them.
    • He made a deal with what he believed to be an [Archmage]'s ghost. It turns out to be Emerrhain, God of Magic, and is really a Deal with the Devil that all but put Aaron's will in the god's hands.
