    Az'kerash

[Necromancer] > [Archmage of Death] > Lv. 78 [Undying Lich, Myth of Death and Vengeance]

The Necromancer, who earned infamy for himself and all Necromancy by launching undead invasions against the living for his vengeance, first on Terandria, then Izril, where he was struck down by Zel Shivertail at the Siege of Liscor during the Second Antinium War. Though he was reported dead, a delivery Teriarch entrusted to Ryoka gives her the reveal that he had faked his death and remains active.

  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Peril Chandler was the hero of the Kingdom of Silvaria and to Terandria in general, defended Izril from a Naga invasion, and showed the world that Necromancy could be used for good. As Az'kerash, he destroyed Silvaria and terrorized Terandria, invaded Izril, and is the go-to example for people who claim Necromancy is inherently evil.
  • Earn Your Title: "Az'kerash" means "Slayer of Kerash", a name that was given to him by the Gnolls after he killed the Gnoll Chieftain Kerash.
  • Evil Mentor: Az'kerash serves as this for Reiss, and later for Pisces as well.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Az'kerash, the most terrible Necromancer in centuries, is usually known only as "The Necromancer". Later chapters reveal his true name to be Perril Chandler.
  • Expy: He does an in-universe lampshade of himself to Pisces when researching his background, who was similarly a noble with lackluster beginnings but later rose to prominence through Necromancy, on top of being a talented fencer. The Necromancer himself mused if only he had met Pisces in his life as a Human.
  • Master Swordsman: Though being a [Necromancer] is his foremost job, he's a deft hand with a rapier that he owned a golden bell—notably without having the [Fencer] class in a world where Classes are common. To wit:
    • During the Siege of Liscor in Volume 5 and despite being out of practice, he possessed Reiss and took on the Redfang Five without taking hit, using only his fencing skills and an anti-healing potion spell. That is, until Shorthilt figured out his techniques while his brothers matched his pace, scoring a blow in the end, and prompting Az'kerash to take the kid's gloves off by firing magic.
    • With the bare minimum of Skills and possessing Tomoor, he matched the [Dragonbane Swordlegend] Revenant and came very close to winning until a single misstep got the possessed killed.
  • Synchronization: He can make pacts with other people, taking control of their body and sharing all senses with him. So far, he has done this with Reiss and Tomoor d’Silaw.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Zig-zagged with the Necromancer. His current name is the suitably eldritch-sounding Az'kerash, but it is quickly revealed that his true name was the very normal Perril Chandler… except that his (few) friends nicknamed him "Peril".

    Toren

[Skeleton Warrior] > [Skeleton Knight] > Lv. 33 [Relic Guardian]; Lv. 13 [Sword Dancer]; [Leader] > Lv. 14 [Undead Leader], [Tactician]; Lv. 3 [Barmaid]; [Carer]

A reanimated Skeleton created by Pisces and given to Erin as a way to pay off his tab. Toren slowly gained sapience as he began Leveling, something undead are not meant to be able to do. He is currently no longer working at the Inn.

  • And I Must Scream: Since Erin can't hear his "voice" trying to talk to her during their confrontation, he concludes that his very reason for existence hates him. This soon drives him to attempt suicide.
  • Artificial Family Member: At the end of Volume 6, his internal monologue refers to Erin as "Mother", though she she only sees him as My Greatest Failure.
  • The Bully: Initially played for laughs. It's shown that he took his orders to be "in charge" of Lyonette very liberally out of anger at what he saw as being replaced. Results in a What the Hell, Hero? moment when Lyon tells Erin how Toren tormented her.
  • Companion Cube: He builds an "Inn" in the dungeon complete with a female Zombie to act as "Erin".
  • Dem Bones: He is a skeleton.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Toren can have some pretty bare-boned reasons for murder.
    • His entire thing of bullying Lyonette and then planning to kill her is because he finds her "annoying" and she stopped him from going hunting for creatures to kill a few times.
    • Also wants to kill Ryoka, The reason for this potential murder? Toren doesn't like her bone structure (her shinbones are too long).
  • It Can Think: He is one of the few sentient undead in existence. His Levels in [Tactician] and [Undead Leader] allow him to manipulate other undead into using simple strategy, often taking defenders off-guard. However, most of the animal-level intelligent Elite Zombies have much more sway over lesser undead, and treat him as just another Skeleton.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: While initially very hostile to the Necromancer and his Chosen for interrupting his attempted suicide, he warms up to him after the immortal Mage starts shooting out hundreds of spells at his own castle in a fit of extreme emotion.
  • Irrational Hatred: Toren's entire dislike of Ryoka Griffin is due to her shinbone length, which he believes is a valid reason to kill her.
  • Lack of Empathy: Since his level of sentience is directly linked to his Level, and he levels quickest by killing, he has little concept of morality or empathy. Volume 6 has him realizing that he now finds killing just for the sake of it to be boring, which shocks him greatly.
  • Morality Pet: In the Necromancer's castle, he begins caring for the healing potion slime.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: His wonder at Erin's music is the reason he managed to resist Az'kerash's call for all undead in the area to come to his castle after the Skinner Battle.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When he feels his mana supply from Erin cut off, he assumes he actually succeeded in killing her, and becomes depressed.
  • Photographic Memory: As an undead without a brain's failings, he has a perfect memory. This also allows him to quickly learn Pekona's bladework to earn the [Blade Dancer] Class.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: His budding sentience comes with a drive to kill all living things, as well as a desire to be acknowledged and part of a group.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: Unlike mundane Skeletons, Toren is capable of doing this so long as he has enough mana. Often played for laughs and coupled with a Cranium Chase, but this gives him a definite edge in a fight as he just doesn't stay down.
  • Sore Loser: He is quick to (mentally) berate opponents for not playing "fair" if they do something he didn't plan for.
  • Supernatural Fear Inducer: Toren took a [Terror]-enchanted ruby from Skinner and kept it glued to the inside of his skull. After it was shattered (along with most of his skull), the blue flames in his eye sockets turned purple, and he can now activate the [Terror] effect at will.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • He followed Erin's orders to chop wood and build a fire. Unfortunately, he unknowingly used boombark tree wood, and blew up the original Inn.
    • His very creation is likely a ploy by Cognita to get the schematics and spell formulas for Leveling undead creations to the Necromancer.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Mrsha encounters a fading Toren in 3.27M he tries to gut her before she falls into Liscor's dungeon via a crevasse. 4.08T clarified Toren was "only" considering stabbing Mrsha or otherwise letting her go. He drops this when the healing slime get's upset with his Mrsha murder musings.
  • Zeroth Law Rebellion: He intentionally follows Erin's orders to the letter when he abandons her in the middle of the wilderness.
