     Earth Hegemony

Blue Light Squadron:

R-9A Arrowhead (Callsign: Savior)

  • Ace Custom: Averted, Arrowhead pilots pretty much a stock R-9A. Similarly, her bydofied form is a humble B-1D1 Bydo System Alpha. In both cases, she kicks way more ass then by all accounts she should.
  • Ace Pilot: But of course.
  • An Arm and a Leg: As she is the first Angel Pac Cyborgs, she was converted before the procedure was perfected. Part of the conversion procedure was amputating her limbs.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Her frequent misjumps when using Faster-Than-Light Travel (which is pretty much Time Travel for humanity) resulted in her arriving in a completely random time. In fact, there are cave paintings of Arrowhead.
  • The Berserker: As Bydo System Alpha, usually due to Unstoppable Rage that is needed for Arrowhead to transform in the first place.
  • Despair Event Horizon: One future version of Arrowhead crossed this when she discovered the reason Fenrir managed to get Bydo Remnant mercenaries was that he had raided the Force Device disposal facility and learned how to remove their control rods, causing her to realize that any future bydo would be made by a human from R-series. She took it poorly. As in, "attempted to destroy every other R-series in an attempt to stop any more bydo being made" poorly.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Civilians frequently pity her, thinking that she is broken, mutilated or trapped in a pod. Arrowhead can't stand it.
  • Hulking Out: Whenever Arrowhead gets sufficiently berserk to trigger transformation into Bydo System Alpha.
  • Justified Extra Lives: Her emergency transwarp - if she's shot down, she warps back to immediately before the battle began, though it is immensely draining and her enemies are aware she's done a warp, likely changing their tactics. Deconstructed, in that her past body is still around and can be utilized by her enemies - Fenrir devoured several hundred of her past selves' Force Devices to transform himself into a Bydo Pupil.
  • Kill and Replace: Accidentally did this to her past self thanks to Timey-Wimey Ball.
  • No Name Given: The pilot of the Arrowhead is never named, and it's implied she herself has forgotten it.
  • Official Couple: With R-13A Cerberus (the pilot and the ship). And then Cerberus got bydofied.
  • Oh, Crap!: In chapter "What the future hold", this is her reaction to Ragnarok firing a Giga Wave Cannon in the simulator.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Inverted. Her callsign is Savior, but she finds it so embarrassing everyone who isn't top brass calls her Arrowhead.
  • Old Soldier: The first R-Type fighter created, and has absolutely no intention of retiring.
  • One-Woman Army: Frequently took on entire fleets of Bydo and won. In fact, she had to fight the beginning of the Bydo War pretty much on her own.
    • Sidestory "The First shall be the Last" has berserk Arrowhead utterly destroy an entire EAAF fleet.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: She had to Mercy Kill her own bydofied daughter. It still hurts her to this day.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: You don't want to be around Arrowhead if anything enrages Arrowhead enough to transform into Bydo System Alpha.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Her basic reaction to anything involving dealing with unknown aliens.
  • Transhuman Abomination: Downplayed; due to repeated exposure to bydogen, her ship body has become a Mechanical Lifeform like the bydo, even to the point of being capable of reproduction (to her endless grief). In fact, Arrowhead herself had beed bydofied twice and managed to come back both times.
  • Warrior Poet: Downplayed. Normally she's pretty straightforward and blunt, but she can be fairly poetic and introspective in her logs.
  • Wetware CPU: As an Angel Pac Cyborg, Arrowhead's human body is permanently connected to her ships systems and acts as her brain.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Not usually, but the common factor among her true bydofication timelines where she isn't outright Brainwashed and Crazy is that she succumbs to pain, grief, and rage and transforms into The Unfettered, utterly focused on destroying the Bydo Empire at any cost. This actually ended up to humanity's overall benefit the second time, as her rage in an attempt to annihilate all the Force Devices ended up revealing Fenrir's rebellion (at the cost of a human space fleet).

R-9F Andromalius (Real name: Kate Anderson)

  • Cool Old Lady: She was already old when she became an R-Type pilot. She eventually retires.
  • Team Mom: Not really shown in story, but Amanda Heather/Sweet Luna explicitly compares her to a grandmother she never had.

R-9D Shooting Star

  • BFG: His Photon-Belt Wave Cannon is nearly as long by itself as the rest of him.
  • Soldiers at the Rear: He is not enthusiastic about fighting at all, but still does when push comes to shove. He is mentioned to have transferred back into reserve at the time of Andromalius' retirement.

R-GS9sp Last Gigs (Real name: Jade Ross):

R-9B2 Stayer

  • Nuke 'em: His most devastating weapon is the "Balmung" missile, whose explosions can tear apart capital ships and swarms of fighters equally easily.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Sweet Luna.

R-9E3 Sweet Luna (Real name: Amanda Heather)

  • Ace Custom: Sweet Luna was made specifically with Amanda Heather in mind - other pilots frequently failed to connect to the ship, prompting EAAF to develop R-9ER Powered Silence and R-9ER2 Unchained Silence as an alternative.
  • Ace Pilot: Possibly to an even greater degree than Arrowhead, considering that she still lives despite her Leeroy Jenkins tendencies.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She has a habit of charging into combat despite being a scout ship, much to her squadmates’ annoyance.
  • Official Couple: With Stayer.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Also with Stayer.

R-99 Last Dancer / R-9ER2 Unchained Silence

  • Overrated and Underleveled: The general reputation of Last Dancer model among humanity, after the ship's poor performance during Bydo Homecoming (where entire squadrons of Last Dancers ended up being demolished by the Bydo). The one attached to the squadron was used as a glorified scout ship. Post-Time Skip, the pilot changed to Unchained Silence.

R-9DH3 Concertmaster (Real name: Bob Mario)

  • BFG: Concertmaster's frame is about 50% Steady Photon-Belt Wave Cannon by volume.
  • Long-Range Fighter: He is pretty much a flying artillery/capital ship killer, and not as effective at close range.
  • The Quiet One: Arrowhead mentions that most of the time he sticks to the background and rarely speaks.

OFX-X X2 Normandy (Real name: Jeff "Joker" Moreau):

  • Deadpan Snarker: Just as in canon, Joker is an endless fountain of smartass remarks.
  • Jerkass Realization: Joker was quite an ass for a few chapters following his introduction. After Arrowhead questioned his skills (and by extension, his attitude), he realized his problem.
  • Wetware CPU: He’s an Angel Pac Cyborg like Arrowhead.

R-9K Sunday Strike: (Real name: Ashley Williams)

  • Boring, but Practical: This is the entire shtick of R-9K model - its weapons are not flashy, but they do their job well, the ship works well as a fighter, while also being cheaper to produce or maintain that even R-9A.
  • New Meat: She is one of the rookies who piloted Arrowheads during the opening chapter. While no longer so by the time of contact with the Citadel races (due to 5-year timeskip), she still lacks actual combat experience.

R-13B Charon (Real name: Richard L. Jenkins)

  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Awesome - massive firepower, outgunning many ships in its class. The Impractical - horrible handling due to only having a single thruster (which is bad in dogfights to say the least), and his Force being prone to suffering from Phlebotinum Breakdown and going berserk. Both those factors contribute to Jenkins' death on Eden Prime.
  • Chain Lightning: How his Bounce Lightning Wave Cannon works.
  • Killed Off for Real: Just like his canon namesake, Charon dies on Eden Prime.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Moreso than his canon counterpart. Many of his deaths on Eden Prime are due to Jenkins overextending and failing to compensate due to Charon's horrible handling.
  • Mighty Glacier: His ship was built to maximize firepower and speed, but handles like a brick. His lack of maneuverability gets him killed on Eden Prime. Over and over again.
  • New Meat: Much like Sunday Strike.
  • Ramming Always Works: Rams a couple of boondoggle fighters during chapter "Engage". It works because he does so Force-first. Not so much the second time on Eden Prime, when him trying gets him killed.
  • Phlebotinum Breakdown: Anchor Force DX has a tendency to go berserk when detached from the ship, attacking anything indiscriminately, but leaving the ship without cover. It contributes to Jenkins' death in doing so.
  • You Remind Me of X: He explicitly reminds Arrowhead of her now-deceased lover Cerberus (which makes sense, seeing as how Charon is a ship of the same line).

R-9Leo Leo (Real name: Kaidan Alenko)

Red Shade Squadron

R-90 Ragnarok

  • Ace Custom: Her R-90 is actually quite a bit different from mass-produced ones, most notably being able to switch between Mega Wave Cannon and Hyper Wave Cannon on the fly.
  • Defector from Decadence: Fought on GRZA’s side during its brief existence, catching some flak from her colleagues in the EAAF for being mostly unrepentant about it.
  • Fantastic Racism: Hates bydogen lifeforms with passion, with said hatred only growing stronger following her Cyclone Force breaking of its restrains, mutating into Phantom Cell and mutating Ragnarok herself.
  • Hero of Another Story: Specifically of R-Type III.
  • Older Than They Look: Her pilot was affected by a growth disorder, looking like she is 14, despite being around 28.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: Her MO. Until the development of Last Gigs, Ragnarok was considered the most powerful R-Type out there.
  • Wetware CPU: She is an Angel Pac Cyborg - one of the earliest in fact.

R-9DP3 Kenrokuen

  • Close-Range Combatant: Her Hyper Tesla Pile Bunker is, well, a Pile Bunker and only usable at close range. It's also powerful enough to split a moon in half.
  • Compensating for Something: Is a frequent target of jokes like that, thanks to Hyper Tesla Pile Bunker's size and appearance.
  • Detonation Moon: Splits Charon (the moon) in half during chapter "Turning the page" to reveal the Mass Relay within. It also results in Stunned Silence from just about everyone but Arrowhead and Ragnarok.

Black Dagger Squadron:

B-1D3 Bydo System Gamma

  • Blood Knight: Just as much as White Requiem - the difference is that he keeps a lid on it out of combat.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He was originally a full-on Bydo ship, but following the Solar Pupil's destruction he changed, and ultimately joined humanity.
  • Team Dad: He is just as much of a leader towards Black Dagger's members as he is their father figure. It is especially shown in his interactions with White Requiem.
  • The Leader: The squadron leader of Black Dagger.

B-1D1 Bydo System Alpha (4)

  • Keet: Alpha-4 sure is hyper.
  • Ugly Cute: Despite resembling a potato more than a fighter, Alpha-4 acts like a cute little kid.

BX-2 Platonic Love:

R-104 White Requiem

Others

R-9Sk2 Dominions

  • The Leader: Of her as of yet unnamed squadron.
  • Pyromaniac: It seems that having a massive flamethrower for a wave cannon comes with the fondness for flame.
  • Videogame Flamethrowers Suck: Officially noted as ineffective, but in practice is anything but - Dominions' Flame Wave Cannon II is very effective at burning out the Bydo and their Meat Moss, and as a result Dominions is frequently sent on reclamation missions.

R-9DV2 Northern Lights

  • More Dakka: His Photon Vulcan II allows him to fire a steady stream of projectiles.
  • Only Sane Man: Especially when paired with Black Daggers.

R-101 Grand Finale

  • Awesome, but Impractical: The team that created him sure made the strongest R-Type ever. Unfortunately, Grand Finale is usually too crazy and unreliable to be more than a liability, as he cannot think in a straight line to save his life.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He is silly, crazy and all around someone you don't want around if you value your sanity. But don't forget that he is the most powerful R-Type fighter ever created.
  • Blessed with Suck: He can break logic itself, but the simple capacity to do that has driven him completely nuts, to the point where it's hard for him not to be a Talkative Loon.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: In spades. When you have the capacity to break logic, your mind no longer follows conventional viewpoints.
  • Expy: Of Kaldor Draigo from If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device.
  • Giving Up on Logic: This guy breaks logic. Too bad humans are logical and tend to go crazy without it...
  • Large Ham: Ye gods, he is the largest ham yet by far.
  • Mad Oracle: He's somehow aware of the existence of Cerberus, and knows they're extremely bad news.
  • Master of All: Anything other R-Types can do, Grand Finale can do better, including those not yet created.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When this guy is serious about something, you know you should listen.
  • Parody Sue: Just like his inspiration.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Did we mention that Grand Finale is the most powerful R-Type ever created enough?
  • Self-Duplication: Can duplicate himself via Time Travel. One canonical R-Type image has an entire fighter rack taken by Grand Finales... despite the fighter being truly one of a kind.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Explicitly described as this.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Sadly, Grand Finale's logic breaking power comes with a drawback of making it completely insane.

Posthumous characters

R-13A Cerberus

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Failed to escape from the Bydo dimension following the destruction of the Bydo Seed, and was subsequently transformed into bydo himself.
  • Homing Projectile: His primary weapon, Lightning Wave Cannon. Its inability to fire without a target to home on was likely what doomed him.
  • Mercy Kill: His immobilized, tree-like Bydo form was ultimately destroyed by RX-12 Cross the Rubicon, putting the watchdog of the forest to rest.
  • Official Couple: With Arrowhead. Sadly, he got bydofied.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: If Wave Master is his daughter. All the worse for Arrowhead, as she outlived Wave Master.

R-9A4 Wave Master

R-9WB Happy Days (Callsign: Fenrir)

  • Ax-Crazy: Side effect of being a pilot of Happy Days. It's because of guys like him that pilots regularly go through therapy, while the Happy Days model as a whole was retired.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: As per Word of God, Fenrir was the one who destroyed Obsidian Pupil. He then blocked Obsidian Pupil's Taking You with Me black hole with his own ship, saving the rest of the fleet at the cost of being partially bydofied. Unfortunately for humans, said event ended up being Fenrir's Start of Darkness.
  • Face–Monster Turn: Subverted, unlike most examples of bydofication. As Solar Pupil was already destroyed at the time, there was nobody around to make him betray humanity, yet betray humanity he did, and all responsibility is on him.
  • Fallen Hero: While he was Ax-Crazy as a result of piloting Happy Days, he certainly was on humanity's side, destroyed the Obsidian Pupil and sacrificed his humanity to save the rest of the fleet from bydofication. Said sacrifice then lead him to the idea to become like the Bydo, and to starting a rebellion that nearly finished what remained of humanity.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: While how much of a hero he was at the time is questionable, him flying in to block Obsidian Pupil's final attack saved the rest of the fleet, at the cost of himself.
  • Start of Darkness: Using himself as a "plug" to block Obsidian Pupil's black hole lead to Fenrir's partial bydofication. Soon afterwards he snapped, left, and began his rebellion.
  • Transhuman Abomination: By the time Arrowhead fought him, he was halfway through his transformation into a Bydo Pupil.

BX-1CX Ouroboros

  • Fallen Hero: She was pretty much the most beloved of the B-Types among humanity, but when Fenrir began his rebellion, she went to his side.
  • Hero Killer: Killed Sweet Luna shortly before the events of R-Type Final 2. It is why Arrowhead decided to use Time Travel to go in Sweet Luna's stead.
  • Love Makes You Evil: One explanation for why she ultimately defected to Fenrir's side.
  • Weaponized Offspring: Arrowhead assumes that the flock of Amphibian IIIs by Ouroboros' side were her children with Fenrir. She quickly becomes disgusted when she recalls that Ouroboros used those Amphibians both as weapons and as a shield.

     Bydo

Solar Pupil:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Was originally a control AI for the proto-bydo - however, he only developed negative emotions, causing the bydo to develop into the Eldritch Abomination army they became.
  • Ax-Crazy: Was literally only capable of negative emotions, in particular hate.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Sidestory chapter "Echo from a timeline without a future" shows a timeline where he won and converted everything into bydo. Even if Arrowhead ultimately killed him with Final Wave Cannon, it wouldn't have changed a thing.
  • Big Bad: Of the entire Bydo War, and it's only with his destruction at the hands of Arrowhead that the war ended
  • Ret-Gone: He was erased from reality when Arrowhead killed the proto-bydo.
  • Monster Progenitor: Of the bydo.
  • Sadist: He wanted nothing less for humanity than to suffer eternally.
  • Stupid Evil: About the only reason the Bydo Empire didn't destroy humanity instantly was Solar Pupil wanting to draw out their deaths and make it as horrific a demise as possible.

Dobkeratops:

  • Horrifying the Horror: Chapter ---DATA EXPUNGED--- has her do this to a Reaper, who responds by firing everything ar her.
  • Memetic Loser: In-Universe. She’s a capital ship sized cyborg monstrosity, who’s constantly being easily defeated by Arrowhead and when she joined up with Fenrir’s Rebels she was outranked by a set of VI-controled drones.
