Sariphi
A human girl who was meant to be a sacrifice to the beast king, she falls in love with him and strives to become a worthy queen.
  • Animal Motifs: In the "The Beast Princess and the Regular King" Alternate Universe, Sariphi is a dog-like beast-woman, representing her kind and open nature.
  • Babies Ever After: She ultimately has a child with Leonhart, the Prince of Beasts, Richard, who due to his heritage and genetic makeup, is easily able to switch between human and beast forms.
  • Barefoot Captives / Prefers Going Barefoot: As a sacrifice, Sariphi isn't allowed to wear shoes. The captive part is subverted as she becomes Leo's consort. Even when she becomes a queen and wears elaborate clothes, she is still barefoot due to Beastmen typically not having footwear of any kind.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: She frequently puts herself in danger to help others, even those who try to harm her. Probably related to her childhood trauma; she confesses to Leo that she feels her life has no purpose if she is not useful.
  • Color Motif: White based on her hair and dress, reflecting on her purity, innocence, and kindness.
  • Cool Big Sis: She becomes one to Tetra.
  • Cute Bookworm: Sariphi loves to read. Although she doesn’t see herself as beautiful, she is attractive with her white hair and blue eyes.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When Sariphi was small, she read in an old book her name meant “sacrifice”. Justifiably upset, she tried to wake up her big sister, who told her to see their parents. She did so…and heard them talking at that exact moment that they weren’t her real parents and they had only adopted her to keep their biological daughter from being sacrificed. The cold look they gave when they noticed her in the door only compounded the trauma.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • In the first chapter of the manga, Anubis says Sariphi is too thin to be eaten by the king. She protests calling him "dog" and "rude", and sticks her tongue at him when he berates her for speaking without permission.
    • She looks furious when she learns that the princesses tore Amit's dress to keep her from joining them in the king's dinner, and would have called them out if Amit hadn't stopped her.
    • She is disgusted when Fenrir tells her that he wants to become a king to make the reigns opening war on each other like in the old times and gives him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech with visible disdain.
  • Friend to All Children: If you're a child, she's going to help you out, whether you're a stranger separated from your parent in the market or the antagonistic princess of a vassal state like Tetra.
  • Heroic Willpower: Once she sets her mind to becoming the perfect queen consort, she faces every task before her no matter how difficult.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Is kind and sweet to everyone (or almost), no matter how rude they are to her. Well, there are exceptions, like Fenrir...
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her eyes are blue, and she is as kind-hearted as can be.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Sariphi doesn't believe she is worthy to stay by Leo's side as queen due to her background as a human sacrifice. Once given the chance to prove her worth, she takes it.
  • Trauma Button: Sariphi is afraid of thunder because it makes her remember the night when she learned the truth about her adoptive parents.
  • Stock Shoujo Heroine: Her empathy, gentle personality, innocence, and determination despite her lack of power easily mark her as one. Her contrast with the stoic but soft Leonhart is also very common for the archetype.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: She doesn’t fear her destiny because she has no home or family to return to. Leo decides to keep her because he realizes she is as lonely as him.

     King Leonhart
Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (Japanese), Ray Hurd (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonhartanime.png
Leonhart
The King of Beasts. Born of a human woman and a beastman, he is "cursed" to turn human every month for a night and must hide this from his entire kingdom due to prejudice.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: He has long, black claws that would put Sabertooth to shame.
  • Barrier Warrior: He's a generally powerful magic user, though his specialty seems to be in casting defensive barriers. He can even enchant objects to project barriers, like he did with Sariphi's ring.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult Sariphi or say she can't be his queen. Or threaten her life, but this is obvious.
  • Cat Folk: Specifically, a lion-man.
  • Face of a Thug: Leonhart's appearance and behavior certainly give the initial impression of a ruthless king when he first appears, but his introductory chapter/episode reveals that he's actually much gentler than he makes himself out to be. Despite threatening Sariphi, he never tries to harm her at all and allows her to see the flowers. After saving her from an assailant in his human form, it's revealed that he never devoured any of the women sent to him as sacrifices, having deliberately spilled his own blood to create the illusion that he did and allowed them to escape. It's also revealed that he's been trying to unite beastkind under his leadership instead of keeping them separate. Sariphi's kindness towards him is what leads him to take her in as his bride.
  • Freakiness Shame: Leonhart hides his human from his subjects because he considers it a "curse" and a major source of his insecurities regarding his rulership. Reassurance from Sariphi that he is a good king despite his flaws is what inspired him to make her his queen.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He becomes jealous of Lante when the latter becomes Sariphi's personal bodyguard because now he wouldn't be the only one to protect her. Yet, he admits that this is wrong.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's half-human and turns into a human when the miasma from the kingdom clears every month for a night.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: Vivian attempts to seduce him in his bed chambers, especially taking her shawl off to reveal her body. He’s having none of it, considering how she only makes him grimace uncomfortably.
  • Important Haircut: When Leo, Sariphi and their friends decide to take Ozmargo back, he cuts his long hair with his sword, before sneaking into the castle.
  • Interspecies Romance: He is both a product of this and is engaged in one himself.
  • King Incognito: He dons this when touring Sariphi around the beast commoner town.
  • Modest Royalty: Unlike his predecessor, Leo doesn’t wear anything flashy or showy (like crowns) other than his black and purple cape.
  • Never Given a Name: He doesn't have a personal name prior to Sariphi dubbing him "Leonhart", instead simply opting to be called by his title and lineage. Averted once his full origins are finally uncovered — while the queen died before she could give him a name and his father the king likely hated him too much to give him one, his biological parents did give him a name: "Richard". By the time he learns this he decides to stick with Leonhart, instead giving his original name to his son.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: As his disinterest in concubines and meeting the princesses that Anubis arranged was confirmed, Vivian shows up in his bed chambers uninvited where she make her first impression by seducing him on his bed. Needless to say, Leonhart is obviously not attracted to her one bit and only responds with grimaces of repulsion and wry discomfort.
  • Royal Blood: Something that is emphasized by much of the court culture; the original king was mighty enough to unite the disparate warring beast tribes of Ozmargo, and his descendants are simply expected to follow suit. Royals are not even given names at birth under a belief that their blood should speak for itself. It nearly upends the entire Beast Realm to learn that he was never the son of the previous king but was instead the son of his estranged brother and a human.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: Leonhart is huge even by the standards of his race. Whenever he becomes a regular, thin human, he keeps his horns (although they get smaller), and his clothes become baggy, but he keeps them tied to his body, although his chest gets very exposed.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He's a spitting image of his human mother (and distant relative Anastasia) in his human form.
  • Uptown Guy: He's the king of beasts who marries a girl who is from the human realm.
  • Vague Age: Beastkind live long lives compared to humans, and his age in particular is never stated. Given that the archpriest disappeared shortly after his presentation as heir apparent and even that is considered far from contemporary events, he's quite a fair bit older than his love.

Allies and Supporters

     Cy and Clops
Cy voiced by: Yuka Nukui (Japanese), Lisette Monique Diaz (English)
Clops voiced by: Natsumi Fujiwara (Japanese), Kristian Eros (English)
Creatures from the One-Eye clan. They were rejected by their clan, but the King saved them by giving them a job running errands in the palace. Both quickly befriend Sariphi because she's an outcast like them, and one of the very few people to treat them well, along with Amit, making them among Sariphi's confidants.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Cy and Clops are extremely loyal to Sariphi, because of her kindness and also because Leonheart told them to take care of her. He gave them shelter when they had nowhere to go.
  • The Caretaker: As servants of the castle, Cy and Clops became this to Sariphi.
  • Cephalothorax: Both of them.
  • The Dividual: One's a walking eyeball with arms, and the other's a walking mouth with feet. They were expelled by the Eye Clan because they can't function without each other. However, their ability turns out to be very useful, because Clops can tell others whatever Cy is seeing and hearing. That helps them to gather evidence of a slave trade and to locate Sariphi when she is kidnapped by Fenrir.

     Chancellor Anubis
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (Japanese), Tom Laflin (English)
The Royal Chancellor, he opposes the King's choice of Sariphi as the future queen and sets seemingly impossible challenges that she must overcome.
  • Beast Man: A dog/jackal man.
  • Berserk Button: He gets pretty pissed off at whatever he considers 'disrespect' to the king or himself, particularly Sariphi's antics.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Played for laughs. Anubis lets out a hilarious "WHAAT?!" of dismay when Amit explains to him that she's been installed and hired by Leonhart after the ordeal with Vivian, completed with a sweatdrop on his head.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In chapters 25, 26, and 27 of Volume 5/Episode 9, they focus on Anubis where his childhood history with Leo was revealed.
  • Evil Chancellor: Subverted; he seems to be this because for a while he's the main antagonist in opposing Sariphi and Leon's relationship, but he's utterly loyal to the king and his objections stand from mostly worry that their people will not accept his choice of queen. He slowly warms up to Sariphi throughout the series.
  • Friendship Denial: Has known Jormungand for ages, but treats him formally and tends to get annoyed with his more laid-back attitude.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Anubis summons four princesses from differing kingdoms in hopes to supplant Sariphi in Leo's affections and choice of queen despite Leo's disinterest in them, but what he failed to see was that Vivian and the princesses were nothing but bad news and unattractive on the inside, except Amit of Murga who proved to be much different from the other three.
  • Hidden Depths: Anubis appears to have poor taste in women. While he admires the previous queen of Ozmargo, he fails to see what type of beasts Princesses Vivian, Kora, and Alba were on the inside.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While his antagonism towards Sariphi is rooted in racism and envy towards how close she is to the king, he is not wrong about the opposition Sariphi's union to the king would face amongst the kingdom's subjects.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Played for laughs. He appears to have a sixth sense whenever Princess Amit is nearby with her baked goods or handmade charms of Murga.
  • Oblivious to Love: For all his intellect, he can't seem to grasp Tetra's crush on him.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Anubis sport these along with Leo and Jormungand - befitting to his unapproachable, stony demeanor.
  • Tsundere: Platonically to Sariphi. He's usually irritated with her and initially doesn't approve of her becoming Queen, hence his various schemes to undermine her. He even tells Sari to her face that he'd never accept her. Over time, he adjusts to Sari's presence and isn't nearly as antagonistic to her.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the king, which is the major reason why he's antagonistic toward Sariphi since her being a human and the King's consort would easily not go over well with the subjects. Even his brief Face–Heel Turn to Set's faction was just a ruse, his loyalty belonging to Leonhart, not "the king".

     Princess Amit
Voiced by: Megumi Han (Japanese), Brittany Lauda (English)
A princess from the reptile clan. She was one of the four princesses who were originally sent to the palace to become the king's consort, but ended up staying in the castle as Sariphi's maid-in-waiting. She has had a crush on the Captain of the Royal Guard since she was young.
  • Character Tics: Amit frequently clasps her hands together or clutches her face, whenever she is anxious or happy.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Her wardrobe is based on Egyptian princesses.
  • The Exile: Was pretty much told not to come back to her kingdom unless she became the king's consort. Sariphi convinces Leo to let her stick around the palace as her companion instead.
  • Extreme Doormat: She is initially like this, because of her low self-esteem and sad background. After becoming friends with Sariphi, Cy and Clops, she learns to be more assertive.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Having no magic powers, Amit mastered culinary arts so she could make other people happy. She's especially good with sweets and pastries.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She loves Captain Jormungand but feels pursuing him would be selfish, as he's dedicated to his job and her kingdom is low in status.
  • Lizard Folk: From the Reptilian tribe.
  • Maid and Maiden: The maid to Sariphi's maiden.
  • Precocious Crush: Developed one of these on Jormungand back when she was a child and he was only a guard. It affected her so much that she agreed to go to the castle and apply as a potential consort for the king, even if he scares her, just so she could see Jor again. The two grow closer by the time Richard is a young child, though both are still too nervous to take the first step.
  • Scars Are Forever: Her hand is wounded when she spills her own blood to disrupt Set's ritual circle, and she refuses to let Bennu heal it so it can be a memento of her ability to contribute.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Gives this to a weasel guard, who is belittling an imprisoned Jormungand under Set's hostile takeover, by whacking him with a vase pot from behind.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: A bit of a hopeless romantic, she enthusiastically supports Sariphi's relationship with the king. Despite this, she's shy about pursuing her own feelings for Jormungand.
From this day forth, we'll be allies in maidenly love!

     Captain Jormungand
Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi (Japanese), Brian Mathis (English)
A reptile man who leads the king's guards. Cool-headed, noble, and one of the first to accept Sariphi.
  • The Captain: Captain of the Royal Guard.
  • Married to the Job: Has stated that he is not interested in marriage, and has devoted himself entirely to his role as the king's protector. He seems to have grown closer to Amit in the epilogue, "hypothetically" discussing their mutual desire for any future children they have to live freely.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Accepts Sariphi's position as future queen in accordance with the king's wishes.
  • Snake People: A more snake-like Reptilian.
  • Undying Loyalty: Like Anubis, he holds this towards Leonhart. It's deep enough to the point where he openly defects when Set exposes Leo's human half and takes the throne.
  • Up Through the Ranks: Was a commoner from a tiny country who rose through the ranks and is now one of the king's most trusted allies.

     Lord Bennu
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (Japanese), Chris Guerrero (English)
One of the Holy Beasts, the Phoenix. Was summoned by Sariphi as part of her first test.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is rather sassy for a tiny beast.
  • Gods Need Prayer Badly: His unassuming form is both a result of overuse of his powers and people losing faith in him; Sariphi's unconditional belief in him reawakens his full power, if only for brief periods.
  • Healing Hands: He possesses the power to heal wounds.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: As he's exhausted much of his energy, he usually appears as a small fat chick.

     Lanteveldt
Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese), Orion Pitts (English)
A hyena clan member and Sariphi's personal guard.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He's fiercely loyal to Sariphi after she proves his innocence of an assassination attempt.
  • Cassandra Truth: When his mother fell sick during his childhood, he took on as many legitimate jobs as he could to afford enough money to buy her medicine. When he finally got it, soldiers immediately confiscated it from him and assumed he'd stolen it despite his protests, dismissing him purely based on his race without even bothering to verify with the pharmacist.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Lante never holds back his sass and sarcasm.
  • Fantastic Racism: As a hyena, Lante was constantly subjected to mistreatment and distrust due to stereotypes against hyena clan members, which resulted in his current attitude.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's abrasive and never minces his words, but he takes his duty to protect Sari seriously and cares about her due to her kindness toward him.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins the main cast in the second half of Volume 7 in the manga and Episode 13 of the second half in the anime.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Engages this with Bennu when the former takes the lead of searching Fenrir's hideout in Goya's capital, the Sabarro Valley, with Cy accompanying them.
  • Undying Loyalty: Lante flat out tells the King his loyalties are to the Queen, and no one but her can order him to do anything.

Antagonists

     Vivian
Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)
A princess from the feline clan. Like Amit, Vivian was one of the four princesses sent to the palace to become the King's consort. Unlike Amit, Vivian's attempts to seduce Leo don't go in her favor.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Her wardrobe is based on Greek princesses.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She initially presents herself politely to Sari, but she eventually drops the act when she's about to kill Sari to take her spot as Leonhart's consort.
  • Gold Digger: She (along with princesses Kora and Alba) only wants to marry Leonhart for political power and has no regard for the fact that he's in love with Sariphi.
  • The Vamp: She proudly states that she used her beauty to seduce many men. Naturally, her ego is bruised when Leo refused her advances in favor of staying faithful to Sari. This leads to her attempts to intimidate Sari into leaving, but when Sari refuses, Vivian moves on to attempted murder in a fit of rage, if not for Amit and the King's intervention.

     Fenrir
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese), David Matranga (English)
The leader of a terrorist group, he has been obsessed with defeating Leonhart since they were children. He kidnaps Sariphi because she is Leo's bride, but soon gets intrigued about her.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Sariphi. His attempts at wooing her with good food and promising expensive gifts don't impress her, since she sees through his attempt to win her over to screw with Leonhart.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: When Fenrir was a kid, he saved Gleipnir's life under the excuse of needing to have a servant. They were always more like friends or brothers than a master and servant.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was the 9th son of the king of the Phantom Wolves, who treated him as a "failure". When the king of Ozmargo scheduled a magic duel among the princes of the two reigns, Fenrir was chosen by his father, who told him it was "his last chance". Fenrir trained really hard for the duel but had no chance against the Ozmargo prince (future Leonhart). To add insult to injury, kid Leo told him he didn't want to fight anymore and asked to be friends with him. As a result, the Phantom Wolf king disowned Fenrir and banished him out of his reign.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Downplayed. The only reason Fenrir kidnapped Sariphi was because she was the only noble of Ozmargo in the ship he attacked; and still, it cost a little for him to believe the king was going to marry a human. As days pass, however, he gets more and more interested in her because Sariphi despises him and keeps herself loyal to Leo. Also, when he tries to burn her in a rage after Sariphi's "The Reason You Suck" Speech, the girl appears unscathed and Fenrir realizes she is protected by the king's magic. So much love from both parties increases Fenrir's determination to defeat Leo and marry Sariphi, as proof of his victory.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: His duel with Leonhart is very much this, as they both disregard weapons and other spells and in Fenrir's own words, "fight like primal beasts".
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Fenrir is obsessed with fighting to the death with Leonhart since the latter humiliated him when they were kids.
  • Sadistic Choice:
  • A Scar to Remember: Fenrir has his left ear cut off in a ritual for having lost his first fight to Leo.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Despite saying straight to his face that she hates the way he thinks, Sariphi has enough kindness to comfort him while he sleeps and empathize with his backstory.

     Justice Set
Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda (Japanese), Sean Letourneau (English)
The enigmatic judge of Ozmargo.
  • Big Bad: He's the main villain of the story, as he plots behind the scenes and successfully takes over Ozmargo from Leonhart.
  • Beast Man: A canid/cervid beastman.
  • Blank White Eyes: Befitting his rather creepy nature.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Set's main goal was to usurp Leonhart by researching his roots, even if that meant trespassing the castle's most forbidden rooms. Once he exposes Leo's human form with a hex, Set takes the position as acting king where he imposes new policies to divide them into castes based on their species. Ultimately, Set was baffled and furious at how all the vassal states such as Sarbul, Maasya, and Bolstobas chose to side with Leonhart, that he lost his cool.
  • Fantastic Racism: Probably the most extreme perpetrator of it in the series: when he usurps control of the kingdom, he swiftly implements a rigid caste system that places all non-mammalian beastkind at the bottom.
  • Royal Blood: His mother was one of the previous king's concubines which led to the erroneous belief that he is actually the legitimate heir, neither aware that the king was actually sterile.
  • The Starscream: He was secretly plotting against Leonhart and successfully exposed the latter's greatest secret while claiming to be the true heir to usurp him.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Sariphi reveals the archpriest's final secret—that the late king was completely infertile, and therefore couldn't possibly have fathered him—he completely breaks down and attempts to cast a spell that only royals can. The backlash tears his body apart.

Yoana

     Ilya
Voiced by: Shōya Chiba (Japanese), Clifford Chapin (English)
Sariphi's childhood friend and a hunter of beastkind.
  • Freudian Excuse: He sees all beastkind as irredeemable savages after beast bandits attacked his village and slaughtered his mother and sister in front of him.
  • Loving a Shadow: Ilya proclaims to love Sariphi and wants to marry her, but he is utterly infuriated when Sariphi gently turns him down for Leonhart. It's only after he reduces Sariphi to tears after Leonhart lets him impale him with his sword that Ilya finally realizes that he only loved her because she reminded him of his deceased sister and was just trying to make it up to her memory, and that wasn't fair to Sariphi.
  • Pet the Dog: He ends up rescuing a beast child after learning it was going to be sold to a human noble as taxidermy. In the anime, he takes on the defense of beastkind refugees escaping from Set's reign.
  • The Victim Must Be Confused: He initially infiltrates the Kingdom of the Beasts to avenge Sariphi upon learning she's been sent there as a sacrifice, but after finding out she's still alive and has been taken in as the king's bride, he refuses to listen to Sariphi's argument that the king has treated her well and kidnaps her. When Sariphi tries to reason with him and point out that not all Beasts are evil, he's so infuriated that he tries to prove her wrong by provoking King Leonhart into fighting him. Much to his surprise and anger, Leo holds back during the fight, but it's only when Ilya hurts him and sees Sariphi cry that he realizes he was just trying to make up to his dead little sister, and that wasn't fair to Sariphi. He begrudgingly accepts Sariphi's decision to stay with Leonhart, but threatens to kill him if he ever does anything to make her cry.

     Ocelot
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese), Ethan Gallardo (English)
A high-ranking knight of Maskviana, the central kingdom of Yoana.
  • Childhood Friends: With Anastasia.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite jailing Sariphi the moment she reveals herself as an envoy from Ozmargo, he hears her out and even directs her to Anastasia so she can get her letter translated.

     Anastasia
Voiced by: Saori Hayami (Japanese), Mallorie Rodak (English)
A mysterious woman who knows the written language of beastkind, a subject considered taboo in human lands.
