He's also a genius inventor and designed most of the equipment found in the laboratory.

  • Coat Cape: Wears his lab coat as such.

  • Conspiracy Theorist: Even down to owning many tinfoil hats. He enjoys talking about his mant theories to the player and Luthier, much to the latter's dismay.

    Sullivan
A famous stand-up comedian who was originally a part of a world-famous comedy duo. He's an elderly man with a jolly demeanor and a love of puns and jokes, although he knows not to tell them when the time isn't right. He's also Tiall's resident Ghost-type master, and before he pursued a career as a comedian, he was a skilled Pokemon Trainer.

  • Cool Old Guy: He's a funny, jolly elderly man who treats the player and his fans with kindness.

  • Hidden Depths: He's a chipper and funny old man, but deep down, the death of his late comedy partner weighs on him a lot. He's good at masking it, but as shown in his side quest, that mask starts to crack greatly, as he panics when he starts to not raise enough money to save his late partner's house, which is revealed to be the Mulberry Manor.

She dresses like a witch and occasionally speaks in a macabre tongue, but is friendly and means well nonetheless.

  • Abusive Parents: Marie's mother would put her under STRICT conditions and surveillance to make sure she lived up to her family's name as a professional wax sculptor. Marie tells the player that, if she made a piece that her mother did not approve of, she would be denied her meals and time with friends.

  • Calling the Old Woman Out: She snaps at her mother for everything that she put her through and how many expectations she weighed growing up in the latter half of her sidequest, even going so far as to say she was ecstatic and thrilled to finally move out and open the museum and live in Tiall.

  • Consummate Professional: She's only 16, and yet has made near-perfect wax replicas of Gym Leaders all across the world. She comes from a long line of wax artists, so this is to be expected.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: No-bake cookies.

Gal: It's revealed that her mother put a lot of pressure onto how she sculpts her waxwork due to her family's heritage, to which Marie claims that she will stop at nothing to make something that will finally make her mother proud. A sleepyhead, coffee-drinking aquarium employee who serves as the aquarium's resident Pokemon veterinarian.

  • Must Have Caffeine: He's always seen drinking coffee, even carrying around his coffee pitcher with him at all times. It doesn't seem to help, though...

  • A Father to His Men: Leads the Konchu Troupe and genuinely cares for his troupemates, saying he would follow them to the ends of the earth. • Boys Like Creepy Critters: Specializes in Bug-types, and is a boy.

  • Signature Mon: His Heracross.

  • Sweet Tooth: Noted by Ryosuke to have one. He's also good at baking and keeps candy in his pocket.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Coffee jelly.

Carnation Island Arc

    Isadora
An EXTREMELY wealthy lady who frequently hosts parties on Carnation Island in her mansion just because she can. She's an avid art collector and history fan. The plot of the arc revolves around deducing who stole some her artifacts after one of her dinner parties, with the investigation eventually unraveling dark secrets around the island.

  • Auntie Pennybags: Is the very EMBODIMENT of this trope. She's insanely wealthy, having lost track of how much money she has, she frequently throws dinner parties where the whole island is invited, frequently donates her wealth towards the island's funds, and if you tell her you need a little "spending money?" Expect to walk away with 'more money than you can fit in your pockets.' (She'll only do this once to you though, she's not 'that' nice!) And the best part? It won't hurt her savings at all.

  • Good Samaritan: Donates her money frequently to funds across Carnation Island, and gives money to those who need it.

  • Signature Mon: Her Gholdengo.

Natsujikan Arc

    Daehyun
A peppy, pastel-clothed teen from Natsujikan Island who meets the player when they first arrive on the island. He's very excitable, talks like no tomorrow and is always taking pictures on his smartphone. He accompanies the player while on the island, and as the arc goes on, the player learns not only of some of the darker sides of sunny Natsujikan Island, but some of Daehyun's past as well.

    Professor Burnet
A professor and researcher from Alola who researches Ultra Wormholes and the abnormalities that come with them. For tropes pertaining to her, see here.
    Lillian
The star performer of the Wingding Circus who performs death-defying trapeze stunts. Originally born an orphan, she's the adoptive daughter of Barney, the circus's ringmaster. When not performing, she's quiet, emotionless, and speaks few words.

    Barney
A jolly, stout old man who is Lillian's adoptive father and the ringmaster of the Wingding Circus. He's boisterous, and always ensures that those who visit his circus will have the time of their life. The player and Daehyun meet him early on after he saves a small child from invading Nihilego on Natsujikan's beach. After learning about the invasions and the Ultra Beasts, he gains a suspicious interest in them...

  • Big Fun: He's a rather round and jolly man who runs a circus! Eventually he becomes the opposite of this.

  • Fat Bastard: He plans to utilize the Ultra Beasts and his circus' popularity to achieve world domination via mass hypnosis. He eventually also ends up treating his performers like garbage.

  • Psychic Powers: Specializes in Psychic-types, and has a gem on his cane that can amplify psychic abilities, like those of his Malamar and Beheyeem, which he ends up using to fulfill his goals of world domination.

  • Repulsive Ringmaster: He runs the Wingding Circus, and he's plotting world domination using the Ultra Beasts' abilities. He also eventually treats his performers (even his own adoptive daughter) like trash when his plan almost comes to fruition.

  • Signature Mon: His Mr. Rime. Eventually, it becomes Blacephalon.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cheesecake.

  • World Domination: His inevitable goal. He almost achieves it, too!

    Lauren
The Wingding Circus' animal (or, technically, Pokemon) tamer. She has a rather fierce and confrontational personality, but cares for the rest of her circus. She resents the protagonist at first, but warms up to them as the arc goes on. In battles, she uses Steel-type Pokemon.

  • Animal Motifs: Elephants. She wears her twin ponytails in the shape of elephant tusks, wears grey-colored clothes, her cape resembles elephant ears, and her ace Pokemon is Copperajah, a Pokemon based on an Indian elephant. This is fitting, as elephants are a common animal in a circus.

  • Angrish: Expect her to speak like this while ferociously brandishing her whip when angry.

  • Big Sister Instinct: Gets VERY protective of Lillian despite them not being blood-related.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Becomes this in the latter half of the story under Barney's influence. In front of Lillian's very eyes, no less!

  • Cool Big Sis: A lot of the circus, especially Lillian, see her as this.

  • Extraoredinary: Specializes in Steel-types.

  • Signature Mon: Her Copperajah. She even rides around on it during circus performances.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Steak, medium rare.

  • Whip of Dominance: Wields a whip and knows how to use it well. She's known to lash it around viciously when angry.

Mitologia Arc

    Lapis
A news reporter from Channel 7 news, stationed in Mitologia, who is one more bad scoop away from losing her job. After a misunderstanding with the player and Professor Maple, she accompanies them and journeys around Mitologia with them to learn about the legendary Pokemon inhabiting the island, and the cultures of the island that surround them. The central plot of the arc revolves around helping her find a "hit new scoop" that will impress her boss and earn her a promotion, or else she will lose her job.

    Prisma
The leader of the Rainbow Society and the big bad of the arc, hoping to gather all the legendary Pokemon on the island (especially Arceus) and use their power to rule over all.

  • Dragon Tamer: Specializes in Dragon-type Pokemon, and is quite skilled with them, being able to quickly reign and subdue Rayquaza, Kyurem, Zygarde, Eternatus and Palkia, using the latter in devastating ways to the rest of the arc's cast.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Konpeito candy.

    N
For tropes retaining to N, refer here.

  • Poison Is Evil: Specializes in Poison-type Pokemon, and is a member of the evil Rainbow Society.

  • Poisonous Person: Not only does she specialize in Poison-types, but she also develops the Corrosive Chip, which is laced with neurotoxins that let her control others as if they were her pawns. She uses these chips on Sergei and Taran.

  • Signature Mon: Her Salazzle. She even uses it (along with her other Pokemon) during interrogations to get people to talk.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Macarons.

    Biscott
The first of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters. He's a strict, no-nonsense Water-type specialist with an uncanny ability to command Water-type Pokemon as if they were soldiers in an army.

  • Bilingual Bonus: Aside from English, he's very fluent in Italian.

  • Color-Coded Characters: Like all the other members of the Rainbow Society, he has a color scheme to him: in his case, blue.

  • Making a Splash: He specializes in Water-type Pokemon, even commanding them as if they were his own personal army.

  • Rambunctious Italian: He's no-nonsense and hot-blooded during battles with the player, and he ESPECIALLY gets like this when he gets angry.

  • Signature Mon: His Blastoise. He eventually gains the ability to Mega Evolve it.

  • Supreme Chef: Not as much as his fellow Elite Chloé, but dang, can he make a good pasta. When Chloé is out on missions, it's usually Biscott who is in charge of the cooking.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Margherita pizza.

    Roderich
The second of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters. He's a kind and brilliant astrophysicist who researches outer space, stars, and how they affect the planet. Unbeknownst to him, however, is that the Rainbow Society is taking advantage of his studies and nice personality, using him to their own means. He thinks they're assisting him with his research.

  • Affably Evil: He's blissfully unaware that the Rainbow Society is using him and his research to further their own goals, merely using him as a pawn. If he shows even the slightest sign of realizing this, he gets a quick jolt back into obliviousness thanks to a brain chip that was installed into his head by Prisma and Lyselle.

  • Color-Coded Characters: Like his fellow Rainbow Society elites, he has a general color scheme to him. In his case, the color black.

  • Cool Old Guy: Gives the player a popsicle upon meeting them, and is nothing but kind to the player in every interaction with them. Aside from astrology, he also enjoys rock music.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: A portrait of him appears during the main story in the Houslas Historical Museim.

  • Obliviously Evil: As stated above, he isn't aware in the slightest that the Rainbow Society is merely using him for his studies, only using him as a pawn.

  • Psychic Powers: With his Pokemon, not him. He specializes in Psychic-types.

  • Shout-Out: An brilliant astrophysicist who is being used by the enemy, unaware that he's a pawn, an occasional airhead who loves to ramble about his studies and field of research, and is a genuine nice guy when he isn't doing evil things against his will... are we talking about Roderich, or Sigma?

  • Signature Mon: His Metagross, which he eventually gains the ability to Mega Evolve it.

  • Technologically Blind Elders: He can operate the machine affixed to his back just fine and calculate scientific formulas on it no problem! ...Just, good luck trying to get him to work his cellphone.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Popsicles. According to him, they're "the perfect brain food," and he even gives the player one upon meeting them.

    Taran
The third of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters. Unlike those encountered before him, he's in his teen years. He's a wiz-kid when it comes to technology and robotics, inventing the Battlebugs: tall bipedal robot insects that do his Pokemon battles for him while he operates from afar. After his initial defeat, he (reluctantly) decides to make a Heel–Face Turn and make amends by helping Kiegan, who he bonds with and eventually starts going out with.

  • all lowercase letters: Talks like this via text through the Battlebugs as well as not using punctuation, save for exclamation points and question marks every now and again.

    "lol"

  • The Atoner: Becomes this after his defeat, leaving the Rainbow Society and making amends to the people of Verde Village for the damages his Battlebugs caused.

  • Boys Like Creepy Critters: He specializes in Bug-types, and his room is full of small bug Pokemon (such as Grubbin and Snom) who he deems his "only real friends."Until Kiegan, of course.

  • Color-Coded Characters: Like his fellow Rainbow Society elites, he has a general color scheme to him. In his case, the color green.

  • Deadpan Snarker: Is this to a good portion of the arc's cast due to his lack of proper social skills.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears before the player, Maple and Lapis even leave Porta Della Mitologia in the ramen restaurant, stalking the trio and informing the rest of the Rainbow Society of them, which helps kickstart the plot.

  • Friend to Bugs: Specializes in Bug-type Pokemon and is very affectionate towards them.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: Aside from inventing his own mech backpack which he wears almost all the time, he also invented the Battlebugs, which not only fight Pokemon battles for him, but were also used to capture Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde, who he was tasked with subduing. He's able to control them remotely and even talk through them (in fact, it's his preferred method of communication.)

  • Green and Mean: He's got a green color scheme, and he's a member of the villainous Rainbow Society. Until he's not.

  • Heel–Face Turn: Does this after his defeat.

  • Leitmotif: "Nostalgia Factor"

  • Mechanical Insects: His Battlebugs.

  • Nerd Glasses: Wears these.

  • No Social Skills: A side effect of being The Shut-In. After his initial defeat and living with Kiegan, he gets better with this.

  • Signature Mon: His Vikavolt, although when he's battled again while under control of the Corrosive Chip, his ace is a Beedrill that can Mega Evolve.

  • The Shut-In: He spends most of his initial arc in the shadows, operating his Battlebugs from afar and speaking through them. He's apparently like this a lot at the Rainbow Society's headquarters too; he almost always stays in his room on his computer or inventing machines, only coming out during meals or "if he absolutely has too." Come his initial defeat, he grows more social.

  • Took a Level in Kindness: Does this after his defeat, doing a Heel–Face Turn on the Rainbow Society, and making amends to the people of the Verde Village by using his Battlebugs to help mend any damages he caused, as well as helping Kiegan with her work as The Silver Staraptor. He still mostly retains his Deadpan Snarker personality, however.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mint chocolate chip ice cream.

    Valerie
The fourth of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters. An aspiring artist and appraiser of the arts, as well as a full-time Deadpan Snarker (even worse than Taran!) and an even worse perfectionist who longs to live in- in her own words- the "good old days" (the Renaissance era.) She also firmly believes that "real art is dead!", which causes her to clash with Callan.

  • Artsy Beret: Sports one.

  • Bilingual Bonus: Alongside English, she speaks (and frequently insults others) in French.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Dresses very nicely and has gorgeous makeup and hair to boot, but is incredibly rude to everyone she meets.

  • Color-Coded Characters: Like her fellow Rainbow Society elites, she has a general color scheme to him. In her case, yellow.

  • Deadpan Snarker: She has an insult for just about everyone she meets.

  • French Jerk: Oh, is she ever.

  • Gratuitous French: Frequently speaks French alongside normal English.

  • Shock and Awe: Specializes in Electric-type Pokemon.

  • Signature Mon: Her Pawmot.

  • Starving Artist: Her reason for joining the Rainbow Society, as she figured it would help her make more money alongside her art.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Croissants.

  • Trapped in the Past: Her inevitable fate. Prisma manages to bring her back during the penultimate showdown, but this happens to her again (albeit of her own volition) due to her dream of living in the past, where "true art is found."

    Oswald
The fifth of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters. A self-proclaimed "knight of justice" who dresses the part, fit with impressive armor, a cape and a (foam) sword. While he is a villain, he is a gentleman and heart, and abides by his own personal code of conduct for battles. He has a tendency to be very eccentric and loud.

  • Anti-Villain: Despite being a villain, he's a genuienly nice guy.

  • The Atoner: After the penultimate fight, he leaves the Rainbow Society to make up for any misdeeds he thinks he may have caused. Eventually, he starts performing for children and adults at Lockwood Town's fair, playing the role of the heroic knight. He also gives the children autographs and good fables to live by.

  • Badass Cape: Boasts one alongside his armor.

  • The Casanova: During his introduction at Mitologia's Renaissance Fair in Lockwood Town, he's seen trying to win over some ladies dressed as medieval peasants, all in knightly fashion. It doesn't go the way he expects.

  • Code of Honour: Has one that he abides by in life and in battles.

  • Color-Coded Characters: Like his fellow Rainbow Society Elites, he takes on a color scheme. In his case, pink.

  • Curtains Match the Windows: Pink eyes to compliment his gorgeous pink hair.

  • Dragons Versus Knights: Tasked with capturing and subduing Eternatus, who he sees as "an evil dragon that must be slain!"

  • Friend to All Children: Is shown to be great with kids and becomes a children's performer after the penultimate battle, offering them autographs and life lessons.

  • Heel–Face Turn: After the penultimate battle, he leaves the Rainbow Society and becomes a children's performer at Lockwood Town's fair.

  • Honor Before Reason: No matter what anyone says, he will never abandon his code of honor for battles. This eventually ends up being his downfall.

  • Knight in Shining Armor: Parodied. He looks and acts the part to a T.

  • Lawful Evil: Is a part of the villainous Rainbow Society. He's also a gentleman who prefers all his fights clean.

  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: His own moral code for battles, where he prefers to fight fair and square, with no dirty tricks. He will not battle the player if their Pokemon are weakened. This eventually causes his downfall against Prisma in the penultimate battle.

  • Nice Guy: Despite being a member of the Rainbow Society, he's kind and gentlemanly to everyone he meets, including the player.

  • Real Men Wear Pink: Is very muscular, and sports luscious pink hair and a manly pink mustache. He also specializes in Fairy-type Pokemon.

  • Signature Mon: His Altaria, which may not be a Fairy-type at first... that is, until he Mega Evolves it.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mutton, fitting with his knightly appearance.

  • Wake-Up Call Boss: In the Mitologia arc, he's the first of the Elites that utilizes Mega Evolution.

  • You Remind Me of X: Says this when he encounters Zacian.
"Such a gorgeous and majestic creature... I see myself in you."

    Gawain
The sixth of the Rainbow Society Elites that the player encounters, alongside his fiancée Chloe, who he is often deployed alongside in missions due to their exceptional teamwork. He initially comes off as a a man of few words who puts up a mean fight. As his arc goes along, however, he starts to question his loyalty to the Rainbow Society after seeing Prisma's increased attempts to subdue the player. He eventually joins the player's side during the climax of said arc after Prisma uses Palkia's power to warp Chloe to another dimension for eternity after Gawain defies Prisma's orders. She comes back though, with the player's help.

    Chloe
The seventh member of the Rainbow Society the player encounters, alongside her fiancé Gawain. To her allies, she's a kind, sweet and regal lady with a knack for cooking, but to her enemies, she's a full-fledged arsonist psychopath who stops at nothing to burn her foes to a crisp.
