Main Characters

    Red/Player

Red Sugimori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/red_33.png
  • Always Someone Better:
    • To Ethan. While both of them have the same electives and a team of Pokémon that listen to them, Red is at least popular and can be a good student and battler depending on the player's results while Ethan is mostly ignored by his peers, struggles with his studies, and isn't a good battler—Janine notes that he seems to be holding back on purpose for an unknown reason.
    • To Cheren. Red is able to be well liked enough by the students that he can be mistaken for running for the student council, while Cheren, who actively tries to gather votes, is disliked for his ideas.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Has had high aspirations to become a high-ranked trainer from a young age, but his financial situation and lack of a social circle kept him lazing around aimlessly in Pallet Town, though he was noted to be decently intelligent by Professor Oak, to the point of memorizing the National Pokédex by number. It's not until he's accepted into Kobukan that he starts properly applying himself.
  • Cannot Tell a Lie: Due to Red's ability, Frienergy, folks around him will instantly know he is lying if he tries to do so.
  • Canon Name: The player can input whatever name they'd prefer for him, but his canonical name is Red Sugimori.
  • Disappeared Dad: Red's father died while helping survivors from the Cinnabar Island eruption evacuate. Due to being very young at the time, Red has trouble remembering things about him.
  • Elective Mute: He was this for a large majority of his childhood, citing that "Words are unnecessary!" when questioned by Blue. He recovers with Professor Oak's assistance, but momentarily reverts to this after the events of Week 4.
  • Fitness Nut: Enjoys running specifically, and as a result, is impressively muscular.
  • Hand Signals: He can learn how to do sign language by learning it from Tia and Whitney.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Like with the Pokémon games featuring him, you can name him whatever the heck you want, with the added bonus of inputting a last name for the guy too.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Type A, thanks to his ability and his very nature, he can make friendship and wants to keep them after not having any in a long while that isn't his Pikachu.
  • Nice Guy: Professor Oak notes that this is the primary reason why Red's Frienergy is so effective. His natural kindness and positivity are felt deeply by both Pokémon and people, making them understand and trust him more easily.
  • Momma's Boy: Very appreciative of his mother, going as far to defend her cooking in Surge's Proficiency 10 scene.
  • The Empath: Frienergy in a nutshell, with it allowing both people and Pokémon to understand the user's feelings better.
  • Working-Class Hero: Comes from a financially poor background, a contrast to the majority of students coming from high-class backgrounds. This results in him being unable to pay for Kobukan Academy's tuition fees and forces him to find an alternative to avoid being kicked out or accrue a large debt.

    Red's Pikachu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pikachu_16.png
Late into Week 5 and Onwards
  • Lazy Bum: Initially refused to accompany Red in his daily exercises back in Pallet Town, and was noted to be a tad overweight. He gradually outgrows this trope after accompanying Red to Kobukan Academy, culminating in unlocking his Liberization form.
  • Undying Loyalty: Red's very first and closest partner. He sneaks onto Red's flight to Kobukan to stay with him and Red adamantly refuses to part with him afterwards, even against Lance's disapproval.
  • Signature Move: He has the move called "Liberage" when his unlocks his Liberization form and it acts as a counter.
  • Shock and Awe: He is a mono Electric-type.
  • Starter Mon: He's effectively the first Pokémon Red has, showing up in the introduction sequence alongside his trainer.

    Blue

Blue Oak

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_14.png

    Ethan

Ethan Gold

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ethan_0.png
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: He is playable after the events of Saturday Week 4.
  • Broken Ace: According to Professor Cherry's level 1 scene in the past, he was a charismatic leader to his classmates. Now he suffers from recurring nightmares and depression.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Most characters don't react well to Ethan's jokes or outright ignore him in most situations.
  • The Gift: He also has Frienergy and seems more proficient with it than Red.
  • Mirror Boss: The first time you fight against the guy in the Battle Club, expect him to have almost the exact same team as you, except with a Pichu in place of the player's Pikachu.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Zigzagged. His team is weak but follow his orders, however he gives his Pokémon bad ones.

    Leaf

Leaf Gracidea Green

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leaf_6.png
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: She is playable for the early events of Week 5.
  • Celeb Crush: Calling Leaf's crush on Rosa would be an understatement.
  • Doomed Hometown: This is part of Leaf's background where her hometown is Cinnabar Island and the volcano there erupted.
  • Dragon Tamer: Uses Dragon-types.
  • Green Thumb: Fights with Grass-types.
  • Shock and Awe: Also utilizes Electric-types.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Her most common method of communicating with Red and Blue, the former being friendly banter while the latter comes off far more combatively.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Far from the richest person in the school, she still enjoyed a wealthy childhood on account of her successful researcher parents and isn't afraid to spoil herself with shopping sprees. While sassy, she doesn't look down on Red's unfortunate financial situation and tries to aid him in acquiring funds without coming off as condescending.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Deathly afraid of water due to her hometown's destruction in the Cinnabar Island eruption. She forces herself to suppress this to ride Tia over the ocean to retrieve Red from Pallet Town, but the phobia remains afterwards.

    Yellow

Kobukan Students

Generation One

    Erika
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erika_3.png
  • Green Thumb: Battles using Grass-types.
  • Money Is Not Power: Her wealth ends up useless in helping her be a good fighter in the tryouts as the rules end up getting changed and making her items unuseable.
  • Poisonous Person: Uses Poison-types.
  • Rich Bitch: While not actively malicious unlike the Ace Trainers, Erika was quick to turn on Red during the events at the end of Week 4, despite her previous pleasantries. She was also the most vocally against his return to the battle team.
  • Token Rich Student: While the students, other than Red and Sonia, have some wealth on them, Erika has by far the most money in comparison.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She fits this trope to a T.

    Misty
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misty_34.png

    Sabrina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabrina_7.png
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Sabrina is unable to shut off her mind-reading abilities and has become heavily cynical from years of being forced to listen to people's darkest thoughts and secrets. She also inadvertently broadcasts her telepathic thoughts under enough stress, something that the Ace students use this to their advantage during the student council elections to reveal Red's Frienergy to the student body, and everyone else's secrets are revealed in the process.
  • Kuudere: She starts showing off the trait later into her level 2 scene.
  • Psychic Powers: She has psychic abilities and uses Psychic-type Pokémon.
  • Soul Power: Battles using Ghost-types.

    Silver
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/silver_95.png

  • Evil Redhead: Subverted. Despite being the son of former Team Rocket leader Giovanni and having red hair, he is trying to help and redeem his father's former employees.
  • Poisonous Person: Uses Poison-type Pokémon.

    Tia

Venetia "Tia" Vongole/Latias

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tia_69.png
True Form
  • Cute Mute: Excitable, hyperactive, and well-meaning, Tia has this in spades.
  • Delightful Dragon: Tia is this once she turns off her disguise and reveals she is a Latias.
  • Dragon Tamer: Uses Dragon-types and she herself is a Dragon-type.
  • Feathered Dragons: In her true form, she is coated in fur-like feathers.
  • Hand Signals: How she primarily communicates with others.
  • In-Series Nickname: Goes by "Tia" instead of "Venetia."
  • Italians Talk with Hands: By virtue of being from Alto Mare, an expy of Venice, and having to speak through sign language.
  • Invisibility: Has the power to do exactly.
  • Lie to the Beholder: Tia has this ability to disguise herself and uses it to disguise the fact she is a Latias and not a human.
  • Master of Illusion: Her human form is an illusion while she herself is floating just above and behind it.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Her quick attachment to Red was mistaken as a romantic interest by Leaf, but she is clarified to have no romantic feelings for him in Week 5 and reacts with disgust at the idea of a human and Pokémon having such relations.
  • Psychic Powers: Uses Psychic-type Pokémon and has psychic powers as she is part Psychic-type.

    Gardenia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gardenia_6.png
  • Green Thumb: Fights with Grass-types.
  • Self-Made Man: Similar to Red, she's one of the very few students to not come from a well-off background. She earns her riches through various financial schemes, though she's noted to suffer socially as a result due to being seen as greedy and aggressive about her money-making methods.
  • Soul Power: Uses Ghost-types.

Generation Five

    Bianca
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bianca_3.png
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Before the second round of the first Quarter Qlashes, Bianca is interviewed by Lisia and takes the opportunity to publicly rub in her father's face that his attempts to make her Stay in the Kitchen ultimately led to her going to Kobukan and becoming more independent.
  • Dumb Blonde: Subverted. She may look the part but she is anything but dumb.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has two short ones that stand straight out to the sides.
  • Non-Elemental: Battles with Normal-types.
  • Psychic Powers: Fights her battles using Psychic-type Pokémon.

    Cheren
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cheren_7.png

  • My God, What Have I Done?: While he doesn't regret being suspicious of Red, he was very regretful of how chaotic the conference in Week 4 became.
  • Non-Elemental: He is Normal-type user.
  • 0% Approval Rating: He initially struggled gathering voters in the first several weeks. After the disastrous events of Week 4, he becomes vilified by the entire school and his appointment to the disciplinary committee is met with harsh outcry.

  • Ace Pilot: Has been flying solo since she was sixteen.
  • Blow You Away: Uses Flying-types.
  • Closet Geek: Skyla is a fan of "Pokémon Rangers", this world's version of Power Rangers, and does a bad job of hiding it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In her level 2 scene she follows two roughnecks to their alley hideout, only for Red to point out how, even if she beat them in battle and the others in the hideout didn't back them up, there isn't any way they wouldn't go free due to Skyla not having anything to tie them up with, no proof they really are criminals, and the fact that vigilantism is illegal.
  • Heroic Wannabe: Skyla's long held dream to be a superhero is a major motivation for many of her actions:
    • The sole reason she learned to fly a plane was to transport supplies to the isolated Lentimas Town on the opposite side of the Unova region from her home despite having no prior connection to it.
  • Making a Splash: Also uses Water-types.
  • Redheads Are Uncool: She is a redhead who is a fond of her sentai shows.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mace_5.png
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Of the step-sibling variant and villainous kind.
  • Epic Fail: They attempt to sully Red's reputation and Student Council "campaign" by spreading images of him cleaning up Inspira City's roads. Instead, they only boost his popularity even further.
  • No Name Given: These two aren't really referred to by name outside of: "Ace Trainer F" and "Ace Trainer M" respectively.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valerie_26.png

Professional Trainers

    Lance
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lance_65.png
  • Adaptational Jerkass : In the original games Lance is shown as a good role model for Silver and someone who brings justice. In PAL:F he is in opposition to Red who he deems privileged and lucky.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Lance's main strategy in battle is to unleash as much power as possible to overwhelm the opponent.
  • Determinator: Never gave up his quest to become Champion of Kanto, then Johto, despite failing to do so dozens of times each. He is now aiming for the title of World Champion with as much persistence.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lance has a soft spot for Janine, of whom he considers himself akin to her uncle. His main objective as advisor of the Battle Team is to help her achieve her own dreams.
  • No Hero to His Valet: Red and his dormmates thought of him as a swell man before getting to meet him personally and he is in actuality a rather callous individual.
