Students
The 26(?) students that attend Midnight Horror School. All 26 Students in General
- Kids Are Cruel: Sorta, while the students are usually falling under the trope below, they all can act like this when they take getting revenge on The Terrible Trio of Tubee, Usop and Yumyum too far, i.e. Half of the students cornering them complete with Docky using his whirlwind to send them back into the elevator in "Noisy Noisy" and Liddy lashing out at Yumyum for faking his wonder in "Yumyum's Wonder" causing the latter to run up to the roof crying.
- Minor Living Alone: Sort of, while the students don't have any parents, they do still have the three teachers as parental figures.
- Nice Mean And In Between: We have the nicer students (Rosso, Chaps, Watt, Fonton, Onpoo), the meaner students (the Terrible Trio of YumYum, Tubee and Usop) and those who are mostly nice but have their moments of jerkiness (Docky, Noisy, Genie, Quicky, Juno)
- Only Sane Man: Onpoo and Vincent come off as this, as there focus episodes aren't as crazy as some of the other students.
- The Smurfette Principle: Out of all 26 students there are only 5 girls (Chaps, Juno, Liddy, Noisy and Onpoo), the rest are all boys, while Mr. X's gender was left ambiguous throughout the show's run.
- Vague Age: MHS is an elementary school during the day, so it wouldn't be too hard to assume that the students are around that age... But some of the students act older (i.e. Docky, Enton, Juno and Vincent) or younger (i.e. Chaps, Kabo and maybe Rosso) than that would imply.
The Terrible Trio (Tubee, Usop and Yumyum) in General
- All of the Other Reindeer: Due to being a trio of bullies, the other students have a strong distrust/disliking for them, particularly Docky, Hikky, Juno and Liddy. But in some episodes, the rest of the students are shown to be getting along with Tubee half of the time when he's not with Usop and Yumyum.
- Everyone Has Standards:
- Although they do bully the slightly younger Rosso, they never/won't bully Kabo.
- They call out Vincent and Genie for trying to use personality-modifying jellybeans on him in episode 29.
- They even helped Kabo out getting coins for his plant in episode 44, though Yumyum got upset with Kabo for taking Liddy as his date.
- They're also willing to work together with Chaps in "Memories Day" after she manages to talk to befriend Yumyum's flies and Onpoo in episode 32, after she accidentally made a majority of the students lethargic.
- Yumyum calls out Noisy for supposedly slandering Spimon in episode 24.
- Yumyum never targets Liddy for bullying, due to having a crush on her.
- They Care about the School's wellbeing, as evidenced in "The Ice Age Has Come" and in the final episode where Yumyum helps Hikky in saving the school from a night eliminating asteroid.
- Additionally, while they do cause minor destruction, they don't actually want any of the students dead/hurt, i.e. Usop's reaction to Liddy nearly falling to her doom in Episode 1.
- Although they do bully the slightly younger Rosso, they never/won't bully Kabo.
- Freudian Trio: Tubee is the Id, Yumyum is the Ego, and Usop is the Superego.
- Gang of Bullies: What they are, basically.
- Go-Karting with Bowser: Despite being bullies, they still join in on school activities and games (mostly Tubee).
- Kids Are Cruel: All three are quite jerkish to the other kids, Inky and Rosso especially.
- Kindness Ball: They usually hold this in a majority of Kabo's focus episodes.
- Nice Mean And In Between: Tubee is the closest thing to 'nice', Usop is more on the 'mean' side, and Yumyum flip-flops between 'mean' and 'in-between' depending on the episode.
- The Bully: All three of them fill this role, constantly causing mischief around the school.
Ampoo
The student named after the letter 'A', based on an electrical plug.
- Those Two Guys: Forms this type of duo with Watt.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-puu".
Borocca
- Crying a River: His 'Wonder' makes it so that when he cries, it rains so hard, it floods a room, as shown in Episode 2.
- Parasol Parachute: Does this with his own head.
- Personal Raincloud: His "Wonder" is that he summons a raincloud when he cries.
- Prone to Tears: Rather sensitive and prone to crying if overwhelmed or upset, which isn't a good thing for those around him.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-boro".
Chaps
- The Baby of the Bunch: Heavily implied to be younger than the other female students.
- Odd Friendship: In Episode 12, she develops a friendship with Yumyum's flies, who bullied her in the start of the episode.
- Jerkass Ball: Picks this up in episode 29, where she helps Genie and Vincent make their behavior changing jellybeans for Kabo, though the blame is mostly on the latter two as it was their idea.
- Nice Girl: A caring and friendly sweetheart who loves cooking for her friends.
- Supreme Chef: She's a great cook, even making her own menu in one episode.
Docky
- Banister Slide: Prone to riding down the banister of the school's steps at incredible speeds.
- Berserk Button: Do not call him slow.
- Character Tics: Adjusts the brim of his helmet.
- Cool Helmet: Always wearing a red fireman's helmet.
- Didn't Think This Through: In episode 19, he leaps up to attack Johnny Crow for teasing him... only to soon realise he's now very high in the air, with someone who's completely fine with letting him fall.Wait... Uh oh... this was a bad idea...
- Jerkass Ball: Docky can sometimes fall under this in certain episodes, the biggest example was in 'Noisy Noisy' where he lashed out at Noisy when she tried to protect him and when he raged out at the bullies later in the episode for trying to frame him for throwing books off the library shelves, causing him to use his whirlwind to send them into the elevator.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being rather rough around the edges, he's got a good heart. The end of episode 19 shows this off especially.
- Odd Friendship: It's kinda odd seeing someone as Stoic as Docky being friends with a semi-hyperactive schedule fanatic like Quicky.
- The Stoic: Very cool and aloof most of the time.
Enton
- Asleep in Class: Shown to be passed out at his desk in episode 32, complete with Snot Bubble.
- Ineffectual Loner: Enton isn't exactly a social butterfly and prefers to spend his time alone on the school's roof, both for his comfort and so others won't be bothered by the smoke constantly billowing from his head.
- Out of Focus: Doesn't exactly get much development.
Fonton
- Nice Guy: He's very friendly and helpful, and supportive of Inky's romantic escapades.
- Only Sane Man: Whenever he's with Inky.
- Talking with Signs: How he communicates.
- The Speechless: Never verbally speaks, instead writing down what he wants to say on sheets of paper. He did speak in the episode "Beast Piranin", although this was likely an error.
Genie
- Nerd Glasses: Wears the traditional swirly anime nerd glasses.
- Jerkass Ball: Genie's mostly quite helpful and genial, but he has a small tendency to commit rather selfish actions, such as his relentless pursuing of Liddy in episode 13 and his attempts at curbing Kabo's hyperactive behaviour via behavior changing jelly beans in episode 29.
- The Smart Guy: Smartest kid in the school.
Hikky
- The Hero: Most often the focus character of an episode and the closest to being the main protagonist.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He switches between Nice and In-Between depending on the episode.
- Only Sane Man: Hikky sometimes falls under this in his friend group.
- Split-Personality Takeover: Of a sort. In episode 24, his anger and stress over having to choose between supporting Noisy or Spimon leads to him splitting into two different versions of himself: a red Hikky representing his passion and anger and a blue Hikky representing his empathy and sorrow.
- Terrible Artist: Starts the series as one, made worse by the fact that his "Wonder" revolves around drawing. He gets better as the series goes on, though.
Inky
- Big "SHUT UP!": Screams at the other students to be quiet in episode 33.
- Bully Magnet: One of the bully trio's main targets.
- High-Pressure Emotion: Whenever he gets too worked up, his face goes pink and steams starts flowing out and rattling his cap, and his ink evaporates, and he collapses.
- Simpleton Voice: His voice is rather deep and a bit slow and slurred.
Juno
- Cool Big Sis: Acts like this towards Rosso.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The tough and blunt masculine girl to Rosso's feminine boy.
- Only Sane Woman: Is significantly more down-to-earth compared to the rest of the female cast.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite her usually not participating in most of the other girls's antics, she swoons over Mr. Tigerl and shows just as much interest in romance novels as the rest of them.
Kabo
- Ambiguously Bi: He apparently is crushing on the main quartet (Hikky, Liddy, Piranin and Spimon) according to the official relationship chart, though only his crush on Liddy comes up in the show itself.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Heavily implied to be the youngest of the students.
- Keet: Kid has way too much energy.
- Odd Friendship: While it's hard to actually call it a friendship, it's kinda weird seeing Kabo act as the Only Friend to Tubee, Usop and Yumyum.
Liddy
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: She has a crush on the stoic and aloof Docky.
- Girlish Pigtails: Her "hair" is up in braids.
- Jerkass Ball: While she's usually cheerful and friendly, she can kinda be a bitch at times, especially when romance gets involved.
- Nice Mean And In Between: She switches between the three depending on the episode.
- Only Sane Man: She Sometimes falls under this whenever the situation calls for it.
- The Smurfette Principle: The only girl in the main quartet.
Magnero
- Gadgeteer Genius: Very proficient at making gadgets, though this only comes up a couple of times.
- Odd Friendship: It's kinda weird to see someone like Magnero being friends with Ampoo and Watt, considering Ampoo is a fuss budget and Watt is Nice Guy Keet.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-magu".
Noisy
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: One episode had her developing feelings for Tubee.
- Genki Girl: Very energetic and peppy.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She's responsible for Hikky splitting into two different versions of himself in episode 24 'Red Hikky, Blue Hikky' after she inadvertently forced him into a minor Sadistic Choice.
- Odd Couple: It's a bit weird for her to have a crush on Tubee, who is a bully.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her constant hunt for things to report on can lead to her feeding into the bullies' schemes without realising it.
- Her asking Hikky to write her speech for class president in episode 24 leads to the poor kid getting so confused and upset about it that he splits in two, after Spimon also decides to run for class president.
Onpoo
- Break the Cutie: In Episode 32, where she realizes that she'd made most of the students (save for the bullies) lethargic by accident.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She's pure black in color, and yet she's perfectly genial and helpful.
- Non-Standard Character Design: Due to her black music note head, She's the only student to lack black sclera in her eyes and any stitching.
- Only Sane Man: While "sane" is a bit of a stretch, most of her focus episodes are tame compared to the rest of the female students.
- Youthful Freckles: Has a sprinkling of white freckles across the bridge of her face.
Piranin
- Asleep in Class: In the first and fiftieth episode, complete with a Snot Bubble.
- Butt-Monkey: Poor kid gets pushed around quite a bit.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He's the nice one of the main quartet, being a shy and sweet kid who doesn't seem to have a mean bone in his body.
- Sea Monster: What he is supposed to be, due to being based on the old legends of such. Doesn't really work out in practice though...
- Straight Gay: It never comes up in the actual show, but the official relationship chart states that he has a crush on Hikky.
Quicky
- Keet: Not as bad as Kabo, but he has his moments.
- Japanese Honorifics: Refers to Docky as "aniki".
- No Sense of Personal Space: He can be very touchy with Docky, even outright leaping on him after Docky finishes his race lap in episode 1.
- Schedule Fanatic: Downright obsessed with following time to the minute, to the annoyance of some.
- Snot Bubble: Has one in episode 13 after he passes out, which is the same colour as the snot usually dangling from it.
- Verbal Tic: Finishes his sentences with "-dagya".
Rosso
- Asleep in Class: In Episode 32, he was asleep at his desk like Enton, but unlike him, he didn't have a snot bubble.
- Birds of a Feather: Possibly the reason why he invited the similarly nervy and quiet Borocca, Inky and Piranin to his party in episode 17.
- Bully Magnet: Not as bad as Inky, but he's usually the main target of Tubee, Usop and Yumyum in most of his focus episodes.
- Lovable Coward: Rosso is fearful, shy and a bit of a crybaby, but also a total sweetheart.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The shy and sensitive feminine boy to Juno's masculine girl.
- Nice Guy: Despite his overwhelming shyness, he's very empathetic and kind.
- Odd Friendship: While not really official or properly explained in "St. Elmo's Fire", it's kinda weird seeing someone as shy as Rosso being friends with the loner Enton or the Collector of the Strange Zobie.
- His friendship with the bold and headstrong Juno qualifies too.
- Prone to Tears: Not as bad as Borocca though.
- Shrinking Violet: He's quite sensitive and emotional.
Spimon
- Keet: Has quite a bit of energy, befitting his inspiration.
- Innocently Insensitive: Has a bit of a habit of blurting things out that can upset people i.e. poking fun at Borroca's crush on a red umbrella.
- Mischief-Making Monkey: In some episodes, he can act like one.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He's the in-between of the main quartet, being a mostly good kid who is somewhat lacking in a filter, resulting in him offending others without meaning to.
- Sweet Tooth: Episode 25 shows that he has quite the obsession with chocolate.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He plays a role in Hikky splitting in two in episode 24, by deciding to run for class president after Noisy had asked Hikky to write her campaign speech, forcing the poor kid into the Sadistic Choice of either following through with Noisy's request or supporting one of his best friends.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-damon".
Tubee
- Everyone Has Standards: Although he is a bully, he actually shows concern for some of the students on rare occasions and doesn't even bully Kabo in any of his focus episodes.
- Freudian Trio: He's the Id of the bullies.
- Karmic Butt-Monkey: Often on the receiving end of slapstick and such for teasing his classmates.
- Nice Mean And In Between: Of the bullies, he qualifies as the closest thing to a 'nice' one that they've got.
- Odd Couple: It's a bit odd for him to have a crush on Noisy, who's a catty microphone girl who's usually making situations worse with her gossiping.
- Token Good Teammate: While "good" is a bit of a stretch, Tubee is shown that when he's alone, he's proven to be the nicer one of the three bullies, as evidenced in 'Borocca's First Love' where he tried to prevent Borocca from crying but failed.
- He even developed an odd attraction towards Noisy in 'Noisy Noisy', though that didn't last long.
- The Bully: The one belonging to Yellow Lizard class, even though he's not as bad as the other two.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-zura".
Usop
- Everyone Has Standards: Although he is a bully, like Tubee and Yumyum, he never once actively tried to antagonize Kabo and even helped him with getting coins for his plant in 'Kabo's Part Time Job'.
- He even became shocked with YumYum's behavior when he kicked Tubee out of their friend group in 'Terrible Trio Recruitment'.
- Eyes Always Shut: Most of the time, his eyes are shut into slits, only opening when he's surprised or shocked.
- Flat Character / Out of Focus: He doesn't get a lot of characterization/focus episodes like the other two bullies.
- Freudian Trio: He is the Superego of the bullies, being much calmer than the other two.
- Karmic Butt-Monkey: His bullying antics often result in karma biting him hard.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He somewhat qualifies as the "mean" one due to having lower standards compared to the other bullies.
- Only Sane Man: When you compare his behavior to Tubee and Yumyum's, he's a lot more relaxed than them.
- The Bully: The one belonging to Blue Spider class.
Vincent
- Bookworm: He likes to be in the library to pick up new books to read.
- Jerkass Ball: He picks this up in episode 29 when he helps Genie make behaviour-changing jelly beans to stop Kabo from being so hyper.
- Nice Guy: A gentle and mellow kid, who just wants to help people like books and is one of the only characters to treat Mr. Book Deposit Machine with respect and friendship.
- No Mouth: His design lacks a mouth, yet he is still able to talk and eat.
- Only Sane Man: While "sane" is a bit of a stretch, his focus episodes don't really get crazy like some of the others.
- In fact, his overall personality is probably why he stands out from the rest of the students.
Watt
- Keet: Downplayed compared to most examples here, but he's quite energetic.
- Nice Guy: An energetic and friendly kid that gets along easily with the other students.
- Those Two Guys: Forms this sort of duo with Ampoo.
- Trying Not to Cry: Near the end of "Ampoo and Watt", when he thinks that Ampoo is still mad at him after rescuing him from the crypts, he begins to cry. Thankfully Ampoo has forgiven him by then and the two reconcile.
Mr. X
- Ambiguous Gender: They are implied to be nonbinary and thus, their "true" gender is unknown.
- Brown Bag Mask: Always has one on. Any attempts to remove it results in an infinite number of bags spawning.
- No-Sell: The aforementioned nature of their Brown Bag Mask means that possessed!Zobie's attempts at stealing their "Wonder" don't do a thing.
- Out of Focus: While they do get some focus episodes, they really don't have a lot of characterization like the others. Then again, them being mysterious is kind of the point.
Yum Yum
- Abhorrent Admirer: YumYum has a rather obvious crush on Liddy, which she does not reciprocate in the slightest, for reasons that do not need an explanation.
- Asleep in Class: He is shown to be snoozing in his seat in at least two episodes.
- Book Dumb: YumYum's not exactly the brightest student.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: 'Evil' is a stretch, but he genuinely does care for his files and his two friends.
- Everyone Has Standards: Although he does bully most of the students, he never bullied Kabo in any of his focus episodes and even helped him out with getting coins for his pumpkin plant.
- Freudian Trio: He's the bullies' Ego.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Although YumYum can be a bully, he, Usop and Tubee were in the right to call Genie and Vincent out for giving Kabo behavior changing jellybeans in "Day of the Great Pumpkin".
- He also called out Noisy for causing Hikky to split into two in "Red Hikky, Blue Hikky"
- Karmic Butt-Monkey: YumYum and his cronies get pushed around a lot as punishment for their cruel and bullying actions.
- Kindness Ball: In Kabo's focus episodes, he comes off as nicer due to his refusal to bully the younger student.
- Nice Mean And In Between: Strangely enough for the bullies' leader, he flips between "mean" and "in-between" depending on the situation.
- The Bully: The leader of the bully trio, and the one belonging to Pink Toad class.
Zobie
- Asleep in Class: He falls asleep at his desk in episode 31, leading to him missing out on important exposition and kickstarting the episode's plot.
- Collector of the Strange: Zobie has a habit of collecting random things.
- Companion Cube: In the end credits and in Episode 9, he is shown to be cuddling a metal duck cowboy that is meant to act as a plushy towards him.
- The Pig-Pen: He has a habit of laying down in graves dug in the ground, leaving him a bit dirty.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. Despite his red eyes, Zobie means no harm.
- Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: His eyes turn a golden color during his Demonic Possession incident in episode 31.
- Verbal Tic: Ends his sentences with "-zobie".
The 27th Student
- Forgettable Character: Not only do none of the other students acknowledge their presence, viewers likely won't even realize they're there unless specifically looking for them.
- Out of Focus: Does not get a single focus episode.
- The Spook: We learn even less about them than we do Mr. X.
- The Voiceless: Never vocalizes.
Faculty
The teachers and other faculty of Midnight Horror School. Tropes Regarding the Three Teachers
- Nice Mean And In Between: The friendly Salaman is nice, the haughty Peginand is mean, and the tough but fair Tigerl is in-between.
- Parental Substitute: Since the students don't seem to have parental figures, it's the teachers's job to keep an eye on them and help them with their problems.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: All three of them are quite reasonable and don't hesitate to punish wrongdoing in the school.
Mr. Salaman
The teacher of the Yellow Lizard class.
- Cool Old Guy: He's a friendly teacher who helps his students with their problems.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He's the nice one of the teachers, being friendly and gentle with his students, though he has his limits.
Mr. Tigerl
The teacher of the Blue Spider class.
- Nice Mean And In Between: He's the in-between of the teachers, being stern but fair.
- Real Men Wear Pink: Doesn't want anyone else to know how much he enjoys romance novels.
Ms. Peginand
The teacher of the Pink Toad class.
- Nice Mean And In Between: She's the mean one of the teachers, being loud, strict and a bit haughty, though not all bad.
- The Smurfette Principle: The Only female teacher at the school.
Lure
A lizard fisherman that controls the school's elevator.
- Sleepy Head: Half of the time Lure is onscreen, he's napping on the job, resulting in the students having to yell to wake him up so the elevator can function.
Screwsnail
A snail skeleton and the school's handyman.
- Slower Than a Snail: He tends to move extremely slowly from place to place, which makes sense given that he's based on a snail.
Johnny Crow
A bird that hangs around the school causing mischief.
- Jerkass: An annoying, thieving jerk of a bird without anything resembling a redeeming quality. It says something when he's mostly causing trouble for the school's bullies by stealing YumYum's banana when it falls out of his peel.
- Kick the Dog: He's always a jerk, but knocking over the pile of leaves, after Kabo had just finished raking them up, causing the poor kid to cry, was just cruel. Thankfully the bullies soon show up to scare him away and help Kabo rake up the leaves again.
- Would Hurt a Child: Was willing to drop Docky out of the sky in episode 19 after the kid got rightfully angry at him for spreading a rumour about him.
The Vending Machines
The school's vending machines, which live in the cafeteria and produce food for the students.
- No Name Given: None of the Vending Machines have individual names.
Mr. Showtime
A floating skull in a rainbow clown wig that hosts the school's events and runs the game room.
- Gratuitous English: He does happen to say random phrases in English in several episodes.
- Large Ham: Fitting for what is essentially a game show host.
Eddy
A giant dragon skeleton chained up outside the school.
- Class Pet: Of sorts.
Mr. Book Deposit Machine
A chameleon skull that is the school's librarian.
- No-Respect Guy: He gets this from the bullies who don't exactly like reading and the teachers who usually threaten him. The other students are much nicer to him though.
Old Owl Sage
An owl that lives in the fountain's cage and sometimes disperses advice to the students.
- Big Damn Heroes: Swoops in as Goldeneye to save Docky from falling out of the sky in episode 19.
- Cool Old Guy: He's a chill and helpful guy with great advice for when the students are troubled.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Well, not exactly a moron, but he seems like a weak old man in a cage, but is actually a super-fast, superhero bird named Goldeneye.
The Principal
The school's principal, always heard and never seen, though it's highly implied he's the school itself.
- Character Narrator: Introduces the premise to the viewer at the intro, and makes closing comments before the credits.
- Mysterious Employer: Of a sort, given that we have no given reasons for why and how Midnight Horror School came to exist in the first place.
