Characters / Digimon - Deva

Go To

The Deva are a group of twelve Ultimate-level Holy Beast Digimon introduced in Digimon Tamers that are derived from the Buddhist myth of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, deities who protected the Bhaiṣajyaguru. The Twelve Heavenly Generals were eventually conflated with the animals of the Chinese zodiac in Japanese Buddhism, and so the Deva are also representative of those figures. The Deva are followers of the Four Holy Beasts, and each Sovereign has three Deva subordinates.

Note: All of the Deva are listed in the order of the Zodiac animals they are based on.

Tropes that apply to most or the entire group

  • Adaptational Villainy: Normally, only the Deva under Zhuqiaomon are jerks; the rest of the Deva are either neutral, or more altruistic than their contemporaries. In their anime appearance however, all of them are serving under Zhuqiaomon, and all of them (with the exception of Antylamon) serve as antagonists.
  • Composite Character: While the Deva are based on Buddhist myth, they also take some cues from their Hindu counterparts, which are discussed in Tamers.
  • Eastern Zodiac: Each one is modeled after one the animals.
  • Jerkass: The Deva who serve Zhuqiaomon are every bit as nasty as their boss, being arrogant and rude.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Most of them, save Vikaralmon and Khumbahiramon, have at least some purple somewhere in their design, and they are the servants of the four most powerful Mega level Digimon around.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Another shared aspect of their design is their red eyes.
  • Sadly Mythtaken: There is, in fact, a tradition associating the Twelve Heavenly Generals of Buddhism with the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. These Digimon, however, have mismatched the names and animals. Vajra, for example, in mythology is associated with the dog.
  • The Smart Guy: Qinqlongmon's Deva are ludicrously smart. They're also prone to staying neutral whenever they can.
  • Tactical Rock–Paper–Scissors: Each Deva's attribute matches that of the Holy Beast it serves. Ebonwumon's Deva are vaccine-attribute Digimon. Zhuqiaomon's are virus-attribute, and Azulongmon's and Baihumon's are data-attribute, though Antylamon does have a virus-attribute variant.

    Northern Deva (Ebonwumon)

Vikaralamon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vikaralamon.png
Attacks: Sukara, Pao Lun

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Pig. As a follower of the Holy Beast Ebonwumon, it is an observer-type that gazes on everything from the outside without ever losing its broad smile. Although it has a special skill of sleeping with its eyes open, it soon comes to light that it is sleeping due to its intense snoring and the grinding of its teeth. The wheel of light that it spews from its mouth is called the Bao Lun, and its effect differs depending on its color; a blue Bao Lun captures the opponent, a yellow Bao Lun is able to have things placed on it by taking the shape of a disk, if one passes through a green Bao Lun their wounds are instantly healed, and so on, as there are several variations.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: It's easily the biggest of the Deva, around the size of a large truck.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Its "Bao Lun"note  does different things depending on color. A red one is its own attack, called Sukara.
  • Deadly Disc: Its "Sukara" bores through the opponent with a red Bǎo Lún.
  • Full-Boar Action: A gigantic Kaijuu level pig.
  • The Medic: It can heal others with a green Bao Lun.
  • Sleeps with Both Eyes Open: It's capable of doing this, but its loud snoring alerts people to the fact that it is, in fact, sleeping.
  • The Watcher: It generally prefers to observe the outside world rather than get directly involved in conflicts. That said, when it does get involved, it's powerful and versatile enough to hold its own.

Kumbhiramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kumbhiramon.png
Attacks: Krimisa, Bao Chu

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Rat. As a follower of the Holy Beast Ebonwumon, who boasts of its great wisdom, it is a sage who plays the part of the "challenger" in Ebonwumon's Zen Kōans. With the psychology of anyone but Ebonumon, it is mostly able to see ahead, and has a habit of bewildering the opponent by announcing their next move. Though it uses sarcasm with an acrimonious tone, it charmingly ends all of its sentences with "~chu". As it's not very strong, it's not suited for flinging itself at the opponent, but by means of its powerful abilities of telekinesis, it freely operates a giant steel pestle as big as its own body, the Bao Chu.

  • Batman Gambit: It's very good at reading and predicting its opponents' actions.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Though it uses sarcasm with an acrimonious tone, it charmingly ends all of its sentences with "~chu".
  • Mind over Matter: It has telekinesis, with which it uses the weapon on its back.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Despite being the Rat Deva, it's got six legs like a spider.
  • Mythology Gag: It's noted to be incredibly weak physically. The Kumbhiramon of Tamers was defeated by the Champion level Leomon, albeit with help from a powered-up Galgomon.
  • Named Weapons: Attached to its back is a giant steel pestle as big as its own body; it is called the "Bao Chu" note . The attack of the same name has it leap at the opponent to stab them with its Bǎo Chǔ.
  • Nice Mice: It's a Deadpan Snarker, but it's still of the vaccine attribute. Though its depiction in Tamers is more along the lines of You Dirty Rat! due to being an antagonist.
  • Self-Duplication: Its "Krimíśa" creates six copies of itself to seal its opponent in a hexagram barrier before smashing them with its Bao Chu and "Roku Bunshin" note  creates six clones of itself that tackle the opponent.
  • Verbal Tic: It ends its sentences with "-chu".
  • Visual Pun: Its chief weapon is a giant pestle called a "Bao Chu". "Chu" is the Japanese word for "mouse".
  • Weak, but Skilled: A good hit from a Champion level can easily take it out, so it makes up for its low power and durability by being insanely fast and tricky to hit.

Vajramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vajramon_3.png
Attacks: Rodha, Pao Jian

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Ox. As a follower of the Holy Beast Ebonwumon, it is a seeker of truth who is aiming for detachment from material and emotional concerns. Its warrior-like personality values honor, and loathes cowardice and effeminacy. With the most well-tempered physical strength among the Deva, it can easily wield its giant twin Bao Jian that it carries on its waist.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: It's "Rodha" generates fissures that extend up to 50 m before it. Rocks are also hurled out from the shock waves as they erupt from underground, inflicting damage on those nearby.
  • Dual Wielding: It wields two big-ass swords.
  • Named Weapons: The pair of swords it holds are called Bao Jian note . The attack of the same name fires an X-shaped shockwave from its crossed swords.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: It has the upper body of a minotaur and the lower body of a regular bull.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: Its upper body is more minotaur-ish.
  • The Stoic: It aspires to be this by separating itself from emotional entailments on its search for truth.

    Eastern Deva (Azulongmon)

Mihiramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mihiramon.png
Attacks: Vimohana, Pao Bang

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Tiger. As a follower of the Holy Beast Digimon Azulongmon, it is the biggest ruffian among the Deva, though it is also a brilliant tactician that specializes in reading the terrain. With its tremendous speed, faster than the wind when racing across the land and quicker than a sound when soaring through the sky on its two wings, it runs down the opponent. In battle, it cuts the opponent apart with its sharp fangs and claws, and it has mastered the "Bǎo Bàng", which is its tail transformed into an octagonal three-section staff.

  • Cats Are Mean: It's a tiger, and described as the biggest ruffian among the Deva.
  • Genius Bruiser: Despite being a ruffian, it has a knack for reading the terrain.
  • Loud of War: Its "Vimohana" where it strikes the ground with its Bǎo Bàng to create a large shock wave.
  • Panthera Awesome: It's an enormous winged tiger.
  • The Strategist: Well, tactician. It's good at reading the terrain.
  • Super-Speed: It can run faster than the wind.
  • Tail Slap: Its "Bao Bang", where it separates its tail into three nunchaku-like sections and strikes the foe with it.
  • Unusual Weapon Mounting: Its "Bao Bang" turns its tail into a three-section staff.

Antylamon (Good) (Andiramon (Deva))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andiramon.png
Attacks: Bao Fu, Asipatravana, Data Absorption

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Rabbit. As a follower of the Holy Beast Azulongmon, it is the owner of a gentle spirit. It likes small things, and because it attends to them with profound tenderness, if anything appears that tries to tread on them then its personality is completely reversed, and it attacks with the Bao Fu which transformed its hands into razor-sharp axes. Once a cut is made, it won't stop spreading until the enemy's form is no more.

This form of Antylamon is the true Ultimate level of Lopmon, and is partnered with Shaochung Lee (Suzie Wong), Makiko Date, and Shuuji Kayama.

  • Berserk Button: Harming small-sized beings it adores turn its personality 180 degrees.
  • Righteous Rabbit: This one follows this trope closer than it Virus counterpart. Though it is not a Vaccine, it specifically follows the divine and god-like Azulongmon.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: The major distinction between it and its Virus counterpart is that this version has a nice scarf.
  • Token Good Teammate: For the Deva, where it's described as being gentle and having a soft spot for little Digimon.
  • Warrior Monk: Compared to its Virus counterpart, it's clad in more religious-looking gear, plus it is a worshipper of Azulongmon.

(Antylamon (Evil) (Andiramon (Virus))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andiramon.jpg
Attacks: Mantra Chant, Meditation Cure, Asipatravana

A Perfect Digimon which has the appearance of the "Rabbit" from among the twelve holy beasts of oriental legends. It is able to freely manipulate the "qi" flowing within its body, allowing it to interact with softness as well as hardness, so that at times it moves flexibly as if it were flowing, and at other times it unleashes heavy blows like iron.

This Antylamon variant is the Dark Evolution to Lopmon, and is partnered to Wallace (Willis).

  • Blade Below the Shoulder: It turns its hands into axe blades.
  • Hair-Raising Hare: Compared to its data counterpart, it's a lot more menacing and more often portrayed in an antagonistic role.
  • Heal Thyself: Its "Meditation Cure" recovers damage taken in battle.
  • Morphic Resonance: The tips of its ears and the design of its arms call back to Lopmon, its default Rookie form.
  • Righteous Rabbit: Zigzagged. It is supposedly a Holy Beast Digimon and serve its holy authorities, but it has the Virus attribute, not Vaccine.
  • Spin Attack: Its "Asipatravana" where it transforms its arms into huge blades and spins to attack with them, or absorbs the enemy's data from a distance with its hands. Its "Treasure Axe" makes its hands the shape of axes and spins with outstretched arms, hitting the opponent several times.
  • Super Mode: The Digimon Accel gives it a Blast Mode, which alters its sprite to have a longer horn and what appear to be blades running the length of its arms.

Majiramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/majiramon.png
Attacks: Vedhaka, Bao Shi

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Dragon. As a follower of the Holy Beast Azulongmon, it is extremely calculating and hates to even lift a finger if it won't benefit itself. However, if it realizes that something will benefit itself, it will want to poke its head in no matter what the thing is. It has a habit of putting a price on everything, and expressing various matters by their cost in money. During battle, it shoots through the opponent with the Bao Shi, which are the hairs of its tail and whiskers transformed (Incidentally, one Bao Shi is worth ¥5,000).

  • Breath Weapon: Its "Vedhaka" where it disappears into a swirl of light in the sky from which it fires 108 shining Bao Shi, or breathes flames from its mouth. It possesses ¥540,000 worth of destructive power.
  • Flechette Storm: Its "Bao Shi" note  fires the Bao Shi it creates from its hairs.
  • Greed: Much like classic Western dragons — but not the Eastern ones it's based on — it's very, very greedy.
  • Only in It for the Money: The only reason it does anything — it only acts if there's a chance it will gain some material benefit, and will not lift a finger otherwise.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: It largely resembles a classical Chinese dragon, but with a centaurine stance, moose-like antlers and a greedy personality more befitting an European dragon.
  • Token Evil Teammate: "Evil" is a bit of a stretch, but Majiramon's definitely the most crooked among Azulongmon's Deva. This is saying quite a lot, since fellow Azulongmon Deva Mihiramon is described as being a ruffian.

    Southern Deva (Zhuqiaomon)

Sandiramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sandiramon.png
Attacks: Krishna, Pao Kui

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Snake. As a follower of the Holy Beast Zhuqiaomon, it is the most cunning and cruel among the Deva. It doesn't like to decide matches in an instant, and prefers to instead choke the life out of the opponent while tormenting them bit by bit. It usually lives deep beneath the ground, and subterranean maneuvers are its specialty. During battle, it can produce a spear made of light, the Bao Kui, from its mouth, and skillfully wield it with its tail wrapped around it like a hand. Although the Bao Kui vanishes once it slashes the opponent, as long as Sandiramon's energy lasts, it can spit out any number of them, and they will not degrade in sharpness.

  • Jerkass: It's the most cruel of the Deva.
  • Mighty Roar: Its Krishna is a poisonous roar that dissolves anything it hits.
  • Poisoned Weapon: "Bao Kui" note  is a technique consisting of spitting out a poison-drenched halberd shaped like a cobra.
  • Poisonous Person: Both its attacks involve poison.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: It's a snake, and it's described as the most cruel and vicious of the Deva.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: This Digimon prefers to slowly eke the life out of its opponent rather than quickly finishing them.

Indramon (Indaramon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/indramon.png

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Horse. As a follower of the Holy Beast Zhuqiaomon, it has an intolerably arrogant personality. When it opens its mouth only bragging comes out, and it is constantly fussing over the glossiness of its mane and tail. It indulges in its talents, and ridicules those who work hard. Among the Deva, it is on especially bad terms with Vajramon. Though it fusses over its appearance, in battle it is comparatively unrefined; using the gigantic Bao Bei trumpet shell tied to its arms, it beats the opponent down by wielding it like a cudgel.

  • Attack Reflector: Its "Adhomukha", which blast enemies with the attacks the shell has absorbed.
  • Catch and Return: Its "Adhomukha" does this with its conch shell.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: It's very vain, and, while not much of a skilled fighter, it's still tough.
  • Hellish Horse: A virus-type horse, and far from the friendliest face of the Deva.
  • Loud of War: Its "Adhomukha" where it blows into its trumpet shell to generate destructive ultrasonic waves
  • Named Weapons: Its "Bao Bei" note  where it beats the enemy with its trumpet shell.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Inverted — it's half-horse, half-human in the same vein of centaurs being half-human, half-horse.

Pajiramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pajiramon_4.png

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Sheep. As a follower of the Holy Beast Zhuqiaomon, it is a powerful figure who rules the world of dreams. It doesn't befriend the other Deva and is always calm, never changing its mind. Among the Deva, it has surprisingly many secrets whose truth is not divulged, and it is also known as the Dark Deva. Its personality is cruel, and lacks feelings of consideration for others. The arrows of light fired off from its Bao Gong, which it never parts with even for a moment, have the power to knock out the opponent. Among the Deva, only Kumbhiramon is able to counter it, through the power of its thoughts.

    Western Deva (Baihumon)

Makuramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makuramon.png
Attacks: Raurava, Bao Yu

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Monkey. As a follower of the Holy Beast Baihumon, it has a curious disposition of not speaking and not showing its emotions on its face. However, contrasted with its facial expressions, its body movements are overflowing and its emotions are expressed through its bodily poses. Those suggest that it is often in a more or less good mood, but that its overflowing curiosity doesn't last very long. It makes a hobby out of collecting and locking up the things that catch its eye in its Bao Yu, and in battle, it is a pacifist that locks up the opponent to settle its issues.

  • Constantly Curious: It's a very curious monkey.
  • Crystal Prison: It's capable of creating these in order to end fights non-lethally.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: It's "Raurava" where it imprisons its opponent in a Bao Yu and crushes it, completely erasing them.
  • Martial Pacifist: It prefers to trap its opponents rather than harm them, although it's fully capable of destroying said traps and anyone in them.
  • The Quiet One: It rarely speaks, and expresses emotions through body language.
  • Silly Simian: The monkey Deva, it's in a constant good mood, and has a tendency to grab anything that catches its ever-shifting attention.
  • Technical Pacifist: Which is why it just uses the Bao Yu to imprison enemies, rather than kill them.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Its "Bao Yu" where it throws an explosive crystal ball.

Sinduramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sinduramon.png
Attacks: Puyavaha, Bao Chu

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Rooster. As a follower of the Holy Beast Baihumon, it likes to quarrel and gossip above all else. With its provocative attitude, it will pick a fight with its opponent one way or another, but when they move to attack, it immediately draws its head and wings within its spherical armor. Its armor is the hardest among all of the Deva's equipment, and once it gets inside of the armor, it is absolutely protected. During battle, it is occasionally possible to cut through the breach when it rolls around in that state.

  • Armor of Invincibility: Its shell is supposed to be this.
  • Dirty Coward: It'll provoke enemies by harassing them, then cower inside its shell.
  • Feathered Fiend: It's the rooster Deva, and it's known to pick fights.
  • Gossipy Hens: Quite literally. It's a rooster who likes to gossip more than anything.
  • Shock and Awe: Its "Puyavaha" where it unleashes an intense lightning strike from its Bao Chu.

Caturamon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/caturamon.png
Attacks: Howl of the Heavens, Bao Chui, Śwabhojana

One of the "Deva Digimon", it is a Perfect Digimon with a form resembling the Dog. As a follower of the Holy Beast Baihumon, it looks after its fellow followers Makuramon and Sinduramon as if they were its younger brothers (as for those two, it appears they do not feel the same degree of obligation). Its sense of justice is strong, and it is unsatisfied when it can't make something clear in black-and-white. When all of its comrades are quarrelling, it will sometimes serve as a moderator or presiding judge, changing into the Bao Chui, which is itself as a gigantic hammer, and passing judgment over guilt and innocence.

  • Asian Lion Dogs: It's based on the shisa, a variant from the Ryukyuan islands. It's possess a strong sense of justice, but also a very black-and-white sense of morality.
  • Black-and-White Morality: It thinks exclusively in binary terms and doesn't like when something isn't definitively one way or another.
  • Canis Major: He's the dog Deva and certainly bigger than your average canine.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Caturamon looks after its fellows, but neither of them seem to return the favor. How exactly it doesn't notice Sinduramon is a colossal jerk is unclear.
  • Papa Wolf: It looks after Makuramon and Sinduramon as if they were its own brothers.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: It tries to be a mediator for the other Deva.
  • Super-Scream: Its "Howl of the Heavens" unleashes a wave of force from its mouth.
