The Captain's Mercenary Army

A rookie mercenary army put together by the son of Fabian de Valis who seek to become the greatest mercenaries in the new era following the Day of the Eclipse. Along the way they tackle the various problems caused by the Twilight Order, the darkness of the Karian Empire and the Evil Swords in order to learn about the circumstances behind Fabian's death and the conspiracy behind the Day of the Eclipse.
The Captain's Mercenary Army in General
  • Crutch Character: Except for Elin, all of the main characters are viable units obtained via story progression who can carry the weight for the majority of the campaign, though given that they are 3*'s they are bound to be outstripped by better units let alone Legends.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Due to a gambit by the Empress Iserna regarding her signet ring, the Captain and his crew become criminals in the Karian Empire and will be subjected to punishment if caught within their borders. The other countries don't really care too much in contrast.
  • Improbably Female Cast: In this merry band of 8, its the Captain and Carlson against 6 females.
  • The Kingslayer: They ultimately finished what Fabian had set off to do during the Day of the Eclipse, taking down Emperor Altair II once and for all and putting his scheme to sacrifice the lives of many for a ritual to a close.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Starting out, the Captain's mercenary army consisted of a disgraced noble, his maid, a knight academy drop-out, and a Nervous Wreck. Later on a petty thief, an amazon, a Love Freak priestess, and a Genius Ditz mage join the circle.

    The Captain
The Player Character, and the Son of Fabian de Valis. Told by his father to run away and leave his life behind, he has returned under the masquerade of a lowly mercenary captain to find out the whereabouts of his father.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: The Captain goes from being a charismatic, chivalrous mercenary leader who commands the respect of multiple factions in the base game to a lazy, near-incompetent slacker who often went out of his way to ditch his father's knight lessons, thus having almost no knowledge of how the world works in Brave Nine Story.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: The Captain of Story is noted to be just as adapt at combat and tactics as his base counterpart, but he would rather hit on women and nap than be a responsible mercenary leader.
  • Broken Pedestal: The Captain worshipped the ground that Vain stood on when he decided to take the wayfaring noble and his aide under his wing and teach him Valis-style swordfighting and mercenary techniques. In Sky Island, The Captain doesn't take it well when he finds out that same Vain is actually Prince Adel, the guy who murdered his father and took everything away from him, running his former idol through his sword. Adel survives, but the Captain has conflicting feelings on where he stands, admitting that he would have preferred it if Vain kept up the deception that he was a random mercenary.
  • The Casanova: Surprisingly in Story, the Captain does go out of his way to hit on girls that he fancies with varying success unlike his base counterpart, which surprise surprise doesn't go well with Elin.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Frequently found on the receiving end of many of the female mercenaries' affections, although he's usually oblivious to his popularity or at least doesn't act on it. It's subverted though in Elin's case, as while he is semi-aware of at least his secretary's affections, he chooses to not let himself feel loved until he finds out about his father.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: In the base game, the Captain's eyes are always obscured by his bangs. Though if Story is to be believed, then they are normally black.
  • Featureless Protagonist: As a self-insert character, the protagonist's appearance and gender is explicitly male, and has brown hair and bangs covering his eyes. There's no option for a female protagonist though.
  • Generation Xerox: Everybody who knew Fabian can see his virtues and skills inside of his son.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: As the player's avatar, they give him a name that also acts as their account's name.
  • Informed Attribute: The Captain is renowned by many to be a skilled fighter, but is not a playable unit in the base game, leaving most of the heavy lifting to his mercenary army. Ironically, he does become playable in Story, but in turn is said to be the company's worst fighter who can only handle weak opponents despite being a potent single target warrior who is so good that his soul pieces and equipment are only obtainable through story progression.
  • The Leader: As Captain, Fabian's son leads the mercenary army across the continents in order to fulfill his duties. In Story, his position as one is nominal as he's stated to be at the very bottom of the pecking order.
  • Promoted to Playable: The Captain finally becomes playable in Brave Nine Story after several years of leading his mercenaries from the backseat.
  • The Strategist: Is this for his mercenary army. In gameplay, you as the player must plan unit placements and turn orders in battle.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The Captain's favorite food is stated to be lamb meat in Story.
  • Undying Loyalty: Much like his father, many mercenaries will follow you to the ends of the earth despite the frequent dangers.

    Elin
Type: Supporter
Skill: Enchant
Companion: N/A
Rarity: 3★ (R)
Age: 18 years old, (20 in Story)
Height: 5'2''
Voiced by: Marika Kouno

A childhood friend of the protagonist and a maid who worked for his family. She escaped with him and helped found his mercenary party.

  • Age Lift: Elin is 18 in the original game, but had her age lifted to 20 in "Story".
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Elin is generally not pleased whenever other women flock to the Captain and is exasperated at how effortlessly the Captain can charm other girls.
  • Damsel in Distress: Elin sometimes finds herself in danger that the mercenaries must bust her out of; being held captive by Edin twice and being stranded in the Night World after Eda closed the portal.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Elin winds up being one to the Captain in Story seeing that he became a total slacker who can barely be bothered to lead their growing army.
  • Meido: She served as the Captain's maid back when he was still part of the Imperial nobility, and still caters to his every need in the present though her primary role in present is as his secretary.
  • Ms. Exposition: Frequently explains how the world works for the player and the Captain.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: Elin knew the captain the longest and understood his circumstances the greatest, willing to wait as long as it takes for him to finally notice her feelings for him.
  • Promoted to Playable: Becomes a party member as of a Q1 2023 update.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Captain, who she continues to serve even when he lost his status as Karian nobility, even studying up every aspect in running a mercenary army when the Captain declares his intent to become one.
  • White Mage: In Story she takes over Arianes' role in healing and protecting her fellow mercs.

    Carlson
Type: Defender
Skill: Firm Will
Companion: Laurence
Rarity: 3★ (R)
Age: 22 years old
Height: 5'8"
Voiced by: Takumi Mano
"Hmpf, I was just worried for just a moment. I can easily do this if I wanted."

A former knight of the Empire. He joined with the Captain before he created his mercenaries and trusts him deeply.

  • Defector from Decadence: In the substory "The Knight Exam", Carlson's instructor and fellow knight students, all of whom are nobles, commit dirty tricks to try and eliminate him during an exam on the basis that commoners cannot become knights. In the end, Carlson decides to drop out to be a knight in his own way.
  • Draw Aggro: His skill allows him to become the sole target and draw the enemy's attention away from the other mercenaries in his company for a few turns. Thanks to his bulkiness, he can usually handle what they throw at him.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Dreams of becoming this in his own way and sticks to the ideals of being one. His Awakening form makes him clad in full plate armor for bonus style points.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Like many Defenders, he attacks with a Shield Bash.
  • The Snark Knight: Frequently switches between heroics and being snide against Beatricé.
  • Starter Mon: Recruited in the tutorial early to serve as your main Defender.
  • The One Guy: Considering that the Captain does not actually partake in battle(up until Story), Carlson is the only male mercenary that takes part in battle alongside the rest of his female co-patriots.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this dynamic with Beatricé and Laurence.

    Lydia
Type: Warrior
Skill: Drilled Thrust
Companion: Dede
Age: 15 years old
Height: 4'9"
Voiced by: Hitomi Sekine

An inexperienced speargirl who has much issues with her self-esteem. At first, she trained her spearmanship to combat her weak strength to join the Imperial Army of the Empire, but when she saw the Captain and fell for him in that instant, she immediately joined his army.
  • Ascended Extra: She is a named Mercenary Starter Mon divorced from the main story; as if to make up for it, she became a character participating alongside the original party in BraveNine Story and gets voiced in Brown Dust II. She even gets focus in her own Substory, Lydia, You Can Do It!
  • Cuteness Proximity: In Story, Lydia gets really giddy over anything she perceives as "cute" without considering the consequences, which has caused grief for the Captain at times.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: A shared story has her in awe of the other two women being experts of their own field, oblivious to the tree she just rammed through with her spear.
  • Love at First Sight: For the Captain, which motivated her into joining his army.
  • Naïve Newcomer: As befitting a Starter Mon, her first character story is about being one at the time of her joining the Captain's army.
  • Nervous Wreck: Lydia does not possess self-esteem for herself and goes into a crying fit for even the tiniest infraction.
  • Starter Mon: Becomes one of (and only 3-star) your first Warriors.

Type: Warrior
Skill: I'll Beat You!

"That's because you asked a stupid question. Why would I tell you about my private conversation with the Empress?"

A warrior recruited by the captain after a misunderstanding about her village. After seeing him rescue her village she joined his mercenary band.

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Though deploying Magicians are often the usual tactic against Defenders, Beatricé's skill lets her deal more damage against them. This helps since if you need an anti-Defender to act immediately, seeing as Magicians need a turn to charge.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Has feelings for the Captain but is uncertain when to tell him.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Does not handle it well when the Captain gets attention from other girls.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Fights you initially because she thinks you're one of the bandits. Only after you defeat her that the misunderstanding clears up, then the Captain convinces her to repay for the mistake and help take down the real bandits by joining the party.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: As shown by the Great Voyage's menu when it's not snowy, her top does not cover her back. Otherwise, she'd wear an extra (albeit sleeveless) piece of attire that covers it.
  • Tsundere: Tsun to most people, dere to the captain.

Rarity: 3★ (R)

"Oh, let me try again: surrender, and we'll kill you painfully. How's that?"
A mage who joins the Captain after a misunderstanding of her situation led her to believe they were trying to capture her. Despite her odd behavior, she's well-trained in the art of magic.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Spent most of her time in a lab studying magic on her own. A bit quirky, but very deadly and quite competent in most matters magical.
  • Black Magician Girl: Being a woman who casts destructive magic and dresses in an appropriately dark bodysuit and muted colors, she qualifies for the trope.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: To say the least, she goes by her unique logic that has led her to immediately assuming that the Captain's party were out to kidnap her in their first meeting, and saying that she regrets not having dated the Captain before their ship at sea is about to go down.
  • Starter Mon: Recruited in the tutorial to serve as your main Magician.
  • Stripperific: She removes her black tights covering her body in her Awakening, leaving her in not much more than a bikini.

    Arines
Type: Supporter
Skill: Bear Up!

Age: 18 years old
Height: 5'2" (157.5 cm)

"Sure, sure. Everyone should play fair. Don't you agree, Beatricé?"
A former priestess of an unknown worship. She joins the Captain after hearing rumors of him going after Fabian. Despite being well-versed, and knowledgeable, she loves to tease the other members.
  • The Gadfly: Likes to tease people, primarily Beatricé over her Cannot Spit It Out tendencies.
  • Shipper on Deck: She never fails to gush over romance whenever it happens, like Beatricé and the Captain, or Beatricé and Carlson.
  • Starter Mon: Recruited in the tutorial to serve as your main Supporter.
  • White Mage: Up until Elin finally became playable, Arines was the sole supporter in the Captain's mercenary army, healing and protecting their health.

In the dawn of the new day following the Day of the Eclipse, Crown Prince Adel is kidnapped and experimented on by the Twilight Order after he found out a lot of their dark secrets following Fabian's Rebellion.     Vain Mercenary Army in General

    Adel (Unmarked Spoilers

Crown Prince Adel/Mercenary leader Vain Hope

Age: 27
Height: 5'11''
Voiced by: Soma Saito

The former prince of the Karian Empire who became a mercenary to learn the truth behind the "Day of the Eclipse" and the Twilight Order's involvement in the events.

  • The Atoner: Adel is not too happy about the current state of affairs of the continent due to his actions and negligence after the Day of the Eclipse, especially in regards to Fabian's son, whose father he killed with his own sword. Part of his motivations for his mercenary actions involve righting the wrongs he had put everybody affected through.
  • Death Seeker: Adel/Vain is working tirelessly to undo the mistakes that he and his father have caused to the Empire and the opening of Night World, though he believes that he can only be relieved of his sins when he is killed by Fabian's son, not resisting when the Captain angrily runs the Crown Prince over with his sword. Adel admits to Laura that he had it coming for a long time, though is disappointed that the Captain didn't finish the job.
  • Disease Bleach: Losing half of his soul was traumatizing to Adel, seeing that his once blonde hair got turned white.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Adel ended up being betrayed two times, and took those betrayals personally. The first is when his mentor and idol Fabian orchestrated the "Day of the Eclipse", murdering his father with the help of the Six Devils; the second being when Michaela poisoned his tea and turned Adel over to the Twilight Order.
  • Fallen Princess: Gender-Inverted. Following Michaela's betrayal, Adel had half of his soul drained, lost his status as an Imperial Prince and is effectively dead to the world. He takes most of these developments in stride, since it allows him to start over as an individual and investigate the circumstances behind the "Day of the Eclipse" unimpeded by politics.
  • Living Macguffin: His soul is the required piece to complete the ritual to open up a gate to the Night World and let the residents enter the surface, and thus the Twilight Order and the Dominus Octo are after the remaining piece that stayed with Adel when the other half became Ledakrad.
  • The Mentor: Following his story arc, Adel took in Fabian's son and Elin as apprentices to his mercenary army, instilling the skills and values Fabian taught him back to his son.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the final chapter, Adel finds out that his father Altair II always intended to sacrifice his soul in order to power the ritual to bring Adel's mother Katherine back from the afterlife. This was the final straw for Fabian, who decided that the Emperor is far from saving if he is willing to sacrifice his own son to bring back his wife and rallied his banners to revolt against the crown and save Adel's life. This revelation breaks Adel when he realizes that he repaid Fabian's kindness with hatred and death.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: Adel believes that Fabian's death can only be brought to justice if Adel himself is killed by Fabian's son. In Sky Island, Adel does not resist as the Captain stabs him with fury after finding out "Vain's" true identity as the prince who murdered his father and sent him and Elin on the run. Angelica and Laura notes that Adel's death would have made Fabian's death during the Day of the Eclipse pointless given that he rebelled against the Emperor to save him.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: After Adel's glorified image of Fabian was shattered to pieces when he instigated the Day of the Eclipse and murdered his father in cold blood, the reveal that Fabian rebelled against his father in the first place to stop the crazed emperor from sacrificing Adel himself to resurrect his dead wife caused Adel to regain his faith in his former mentor, doing everything in his power to make up for his transgressions against the man and his son.
  • Revenge Before Reason:
    • Back when he was still Crown Prince after the Day of the Eclipse, Adel focused on punishing all those accountable for the murder of his father, looking deeper into the Six Devils and Fabian's allies at the expense of managing the aftermath of the rebellion. He soon found out that everything Fabian told him about the Emperor was true, and at that point he was betrayed by Michaela and Grand Duke Richard.
    • As Vain, Adel is determined to put an end to the Twilight Order, whom he found out are the true architects of the Day of the Eclipse, though this time around, he had friends and comrades to keep him anchored to reality.
  • Soul Power: Adel's soul is described to be exceptionally powerful by the Twilight Order, and he was kidnapped so that they can use it for their rituals and experiments. An experiment gone wrong ended up splitting his soul in two and Adel can still function despite losing half of his soul. The other half eventually found its way to a homunculus, creating Ledakrad.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Adel learns from Frellea's underlings Helga and Rosengart that Frellea has turned into a new leaf following her fight against the Captain. Despite knowing that Frellea and his betrayer Michaella are the same people, Adel chose not to push the issue further since she won't be causing anymore trouble for anyone despite Laura's objections.

  • The Lancer: Serves as Adel's Number Two who does a lot of the logistics and planning to help him achieve his revenge against the Twilight Order.
  • Secret-Keeper: More like secret enforcer given that she basically forces Adel to keep quiet about his true identity and his part in the Day of the Eclipse following his fall from grace.
  • Tsundere: She used to hate Adel with a passion for murdering Fabian in the "Day of the Eclipse". At present, she gained a bit of appreciation for the former prince and there is no malice in her usual barbs.

Sky Island Expedition Team

A coalition between the Captain and Vain's mercenary armies who set off with Sky Explorer Spatti and several new comrades to find the Cradle of God within the lost Southern continent.

The Captain's Crew

    Spatti
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spattti_cropped.jpg
Gender: Female
Age: 27 years old
Height: 5'6"
Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori

A peppy girl whose heart lies in exploring the skies.

  • Ace Pilot: For all of Spatti's silliness, she is very much capable of piloting an airship, sky exploration having been her childhood dream to the point her profile states her as being among the first to take to the skies upon the invention of Magical Airships. This skill is best demonstrated in the Part III Prologue substory where she commandeers one.
  • Bold Explorer: Her profile talks about her parents' dream to take their daughter to an island in the sky, which Spatti inherited with a passion, became "First Explorer" of the Explorer Union 'Sylphid', and was amongst the first to use Magical Airships.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A lot about her sex appeal includes wearing a tank top that shows off the entirety of her cleavage and ends above the navel, to the point that there's a lack of a bra, and her leotard-like outfit emphasizing her thighs.
  • Parental Abandonment: All that's stated about their disappearance is that they went on one expedition that they never returned from, leaving what explorer knowledge they taught to Spatti, who fulfilled her dreams of sky expeditions on her own.

    Cecilia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecilia_illustration.png
Type: Defender
Skill: Abyss Shield
Companion: Quatina
Age: 22 years old
Height: 5'6''
Voiced by: Manaka Iwami

The princess and Sole Survivor of the Banshees who sets out with the family heirloom in order to locate the God's Cradle in the lost continent with the help of the Captain and Spatti.

  • Cool Crown: The black, spiky crown over her head is a symbol of royalty over all the Banshees.
  • Fanservice Pack: After her awakening, her leotard becomes strapless and shows her with a Navel-Deep Neckline while she wears a choker.
  • Leotard of Power: She's a powerful Banshee that wears one, which becomes strapless in her awakened state.
  • Mystical White Hair: As part of her demonic Banshee origins, she has this to match her ghostly background.
  • Old Maid: The story behind her Ghost Cecilia skin is that she had countless suitors whose hearts she broke, prompting a disgruntled one to murder her, which turned her into a ghost (which is ironic since she's a banshee, a spirit in folklore). Because of this, she's become moody over the fact that she's a "virgin ghost".
  • Our Banshees Are Louder: It's not known whether Banshees do have a Death Wail, but Cecilia at least fits the part of an ethereal woman in mourning, though it's for her fallen clan in this case.
  • Sole Survivor: After the Dominus Octo wiped them out from existence to open a path to the surface, Cecilia is the last of the Banshee clan.

    Angelica
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angelica_illustration.png
Type: Warrior
Skill: Divine Darkness
Companion: Elysis
Age: 26 years old
Height: 5'4''
Voiced by: Rie Takahashi

"The Fallen"—formerly a nun of the Arclight Order who guarded the two Evil Swords, Vanar and Jormun. However, Vanar suddenly went missing one day, causing the guardian to be sentenced to execution for her failure. She was resigned to this fate until Fabian intervened, convincing her to live and fix her mistake. Since then, she has taken Jormun with her to track down its missing pair while assisting Fabian in assassinating Altair II, carving her name into legend as one of the Six Devils.

  • The Atoner: Angelica seeks to make peace with her negligence on her duty to protect Vanar by grabbing its twin and tracking down the one who took the sword and accepting any punishment from her covenant afterwards. After Frellea's defeat however, all parties involved decided to drop the issue entirely with the now liberated Angelica roaming the world to cut down evil with Jormun.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: The Evil Sword she wields, Jormund, is constantly trying to tempt her into giving up control while letting off dark mana that she has to hold in herself so that no one else in the vicinity is corrupted by it, all while demons are attracted to it. That said, in her hands, it is an instrument she uses for the good of all in her search for Vanar. Even her skill's name, Divine Darkness, invokes her still being a nun of the Arclight Order at heart.
  • Blessed with Suck: The legendary Evil Sword Jormund gives her power virtually unmatched by few in combat, but it's always emitting dark mana she takes in to avoid letting in taint her surroundings, not to mention the temptations of power it offers her in exchange for her will and how it draws in demons to fight.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Angelica deals massive magical damage to enemies using Jormund, though the process takes a good portion of her own health in exchange. A consequence of using an Evil Sword perhaps?
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She's dressed in black nun's clothing and wields a sword that emits definitely evil miasma, but she always ensures that everyone receives goodwill.
  • Dual Wielding: After defeating Edin and taking back Vanar, Angelica became the master of both Evil Swords for a while, which Frellea exploited by taking control of her for her own ambitions. This does not reflect much in gameplay.
  • Enemy Without: When Angelica became the guardian of the Evil Swords, she casted aside her name and human weakness to prevent the sword's influences from corrupting her. Those emotions were manifested into a mirror of Angelica known by her old identity: Elysis.
  • Heroic Willpower: Despite being constantly tempted by Jormund to let it take her over, its dark mana eroding her and constant attacks from demons attracted to the sword, she hardly balked at the burden throughout the years that she may as well be Immune to Mind Control.
  • Honorary True Companion: Angelica first meets the Captain's Mercenaries over a scuffle on the Evil Swords which they end up working together to solve. Along the way, they take on the Arclight Order, traverse the Night World and fight the Dominus Octo to rescue Elin, and take down the Goddess Frellea. So far, she is the only member of the Six Devils to consistently assist the Captain on his endeavors to help others and even became an ally during Part III.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Angelica's presence in the Captain's journey in Part I is when the conflict starts to escalate, with the mercenaries taking on the mysteries of the Evil Swords, the Arclight Order, the Dominus Octo, and the rogue demi-goddess Frellea
  • Magic Knight: She's more closer to this than being a skilled warrior like Alec, relying on the power of Jormun to belt out singular, destructive uppercuts.
  • My Greatest Failure: Vanar, one of the twin Evil Swords of unfathomable dark power, getting stolen from under her watch, though through no fault of her own.
  • Nun Too Holy: Zigzagged. She's effectively excommunicated from the Arclight Order and is hunted by them for losing Vanar and taking Jormund to find its twin, but she still remains a nun, clothes and morals and all in spirit, except for the cursed sword she's carrying.
  • Religious Bruiser: She was trained from childhood to become a guardian of two legendary cursed swords, until one of them went missing in a plot. Afterwards, she's now on the run wielding the remaining magic sword to look for the missing one, later being a part of Fabian's companions instrumental in the assault on the Karian royal castle.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: While she initially was going to let herself be executed by the Arclight Order for failing to guard Vanar when it was stolen, despite the fact that she knew she was framed, Fabian interfered in her execution, convincing her to live longer to make up for her failure. Now she has taken the remaining Evil Sword, Jormund, to use it as a magnet and find its twin. She's fended off forces of the Order looking for her, though she plans to return to them for her overdue punishment once she's found Vanar.
  • Training from Hell: The past story, Unmovable Shadow, reveals that becoming a Guardian of the Evil Sword is a dark secret the Order keeps. Back when Angelica was a young girl named Elysis, she was one of many children taken inside a harsh training facility that fostered candidates who get beat up by magical dummies and compete against each other, building up not just their fighting skills but their mental fortitude. The remaining candidates then participate in the "Trial of the Devil", where they must enter a room and come out with the items inside (the examiners neglected to mention said items were cursed and that they must come out without being possessed by them). Elysis was the lone graduate after killing the other two who went berserk.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Angelica's ability to wield the Evil Swords without breaking becomes an instrumental part of Frellea's grand scheme to start a war to make humanity and the Dominus Octo kill each other.
