Main Characters

     Julia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/077f4ffb_7593_4e5d_9b48_71addff18be6.jpeg

The main protagonist and our female lead. A servant to an upperclass family, she’s rendered mute by a traumatic experience, from what she’s told as she has no prior memories past the age of 12. Julia is deeply in love with the second-born son of the marquess Lafayette, Camille, in turn is the bane of envy of all of his servants. A certain incident casts her out and she winds up in the loving arms of a duke, Glen De Vestris, but she’s torn over who her heart should rightfully belong to.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: The servants of the Layfaette work her to the bone because of their strong, yet petty jealousy over Camille’s infatuation and favoritism towards her.
  • Babies Ever After: At the end of the series, she and Glen have a couple of cute children resembling one another.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • She’s extremely loyal to her crush Camille, even though she’s oblivious that he’s a Yandere while Glen showers her with genuine affection. All of Glen’s doting only makes her miss Camille more and wishes to be by his side, concerned over how worried he must be without her. They eventually reunite directly after Camille saves her from getting forced upon by a random man. And well, her long absence definitely taken a toll on what little sanity Camille had left, so he imprisons her in a secret part of his estate called the Toy Room.
    • She’s horrified for seeing him for his true self, but she’s force herself to lie that she loves him, especially after he beats her bloody after accusing her of seducing Gregory AFTER he saved her from nearly getting assaulted from him!
    • It’s strongly implied that Camille rapes her in his extreme paranoia that she somehow invited Glen over (it was actually Camille’s father). After Glen seemingly leaves but breaks in to save her, she doesn’t hesitate to accept his offer.
  • Break the Cutie: Dear lord, what doesn’t go right for her?!
  • Child by Rape: When her mother, Celestine, was romantically involved Maximillien, this sparked his father’s interest and forced himself on her. This event caused Julia’s birth.
  • Cute Mute: She’s been told that some sort of traumatizing incident from when she was younger rendered her mute, and only Camille can temporarily cure her. Except his “healing” is actually a curse he place on her because of his extremely jealousy of Julia talking to anyone BUT him. He lifts the curse after he chains her up in the Toy Room, and fortunately she keeps her voice after Glen rescues her.
  • Damsel in Distress: She’s kidnapped by Camille twice, nearly attacked by Ophelia’s brainwashed henchmen, then kidnapped by the royal army under Maximillien’s command so that he’ll force her to be his new mistress. Glen always comes around to save her. Whenever a man tries to force himself on her, it’s Camille who just so happens to be nearby and saves her.
  • Defiant Captive: Once she’s in Maximillien’s clutches, does she cry out and beg for mercy? NOPE. She pushes him off and calls him out on his role in her mother’s death. But he’s in denial and firmly believes she is Celestine, but Julia stands her ground and declares herself Glen’s fiancé, while shaming him for following in their father’s footsteps in breaking apart a loving couple.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: She has a broken expression after her seemingly assault from Camille.
  • Friendless Background: EVERYONE at the Layfaette estate hated her, so safe to say she’s lacking in the friends department. Camille on the other hand…
  • Insecure Love Interest:
    • She feels unworthy of Camille’s love because of their social standing.
    • She starts to feel insecure and worried that she’s falling in love with Glen, due to her own worries of being a burden to his kindness after he saves her from Camille’s abuse as well as her fears over Ophelia’s threats. Fortunately, Glen clears it up and declares his love for her.
  • Kaleidoscope Eyes: In some chapters, her eye color changes from brown to bright violet, only to go back to brown. This may have to do with her Arcana’s power, king’s blood, which changes her eyes to red. But brown becomes her permanent eye color for the rest of the story.
  • Oblivious to Love: She’s confused over why a nobleman like Glen would be so generous to a commoner like her but grateful to have such a kind friend, while at the same time is clueless over his obvious attraction towards her. Subverted when she does end up falling for Glen.
  • Official Couple: She and Glen are happily engaged.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Wears a whole lot of beautiful gowns when Glen takes her in.
  • Proper Lady: She’s graceful, kind, and pure of heart. Glen is quick to notice while not exactly perfect, her table manners are noble-like.
  • Rape Discretion Shot: In chapter 23, it’s strongly hinted that she’s suffers this fate, no thanks to Camille. Chapter 41 fortunately subverts this, because she admits that Camille never actually raped her, just punched her bloody.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has a pale complexion while her hair has a blackish-blue coloring, and it’s noted in-universe of how beautiful she is because of this trope.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Maximillien ultimately desires to make her his new mistress after he finds out she’s alive and bears a strong resemblance to her mother, Celestine, who was his former lover. It’s even more messed up since she’s biologically his half-sister and tried to kill her as a child.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man:
    • She’s devoted to Camille because he’s the only person who has ever treated her as a human being with tender kindness, as opposed to the horrific abuse she endured from the servants and his family. Unfortunately, it’s all an act as Camille revels in her misery as he finds her beauty at its peak when she’s unhappy and bullied.
    • Until she finally sees Camille’s true self after he imprisons her, beats her bloody, and possibly rapes her does she let go of her infatuation towards him.
    • Julia eventually falls in love with Glen because he rescued her from her imprisonment and treats her with genuine kindness even before Camille kidnaps her. Julia even points out to Glen that he’s the first person who has actually treated her with real kindness, which in turn leads to their Big Damn Kiss.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse:
    • For starters, the servants bully her and overwork her because of their extreme and petty jealousy of Camille’s infatuation towards her. The maids are especially jealous and most cruel towards her because Julia’s beauty far surpasses their own.
    • Little to her knowledge, Camille is a Yandere and finds her at the peak of her beauty when she’s at her most miserable, so he looks the other way at the bullying and then comforts her so that it will make her cling onto him more.
    • Don’t get us started whenever she’s nearly raped from violent men that are also captivated by her beauty.
    • Despite being his half-sister, Maximillien orders her kidnapped so that she’s replace her mother as his new mistress. She obviously wants no part of this and tells him off. Fortunately Glen storms in and saves her.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Just as she realized Glen is her soulmate, her true lineage gets reveals and it’s not pretty. Her birthparents are revealed to be that of the previous king and Celestine, Maximillien’s lover. Since her family are declared as rebels and hunted down, Julia and Glen are both are forced into a Sadistic Choice with their necks at sake. She tells Glen she’s fine leaving him for his sake, but deep down she’s utterly heartbroken they could not be together. Then Camille comes into the picture and kidnaps her again, directly after leaving Glen for dead. Luckily he survives, but Maximillien now wants her as his mistress and sends out soldiers capture her. Camille lets her go while he Holds The Line at the cost of his life, but she’s captured by the royal army before Glen makes it in time. She’s repulsed by Maximillien’s incestuous attraction towards her and rejects him in favor of Glen. Once Glen comes in, Maximillien grabs her as she tries to run to Glen’s side, but he mouths him off over his treatment of Julia. He lets her go and they leave unscathed.
  • Suddenly Suitable Suitor: As Glen is healing Julia after saving her from Camille’s imprisonment, he finds out she has traces of Arcana, which only those who are of Blue Blood or ancient nobility can posses it. Julia eventually starts to fall for Glen, but feels extremely insecure due their social standing. But Glen points out her memory loss and for all they know, Julia might be a princess. 3 months later, Glen hosts a social gathering to prove to the world that she does have Arcana, and he made sure to invite the prince in order to get the king’s blessings so that he and Julia can be married.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Just before she attends her own wedding reception, she comes down with a serious case of vomiting. Ophelia quickly connects the dots and confirms that it’s Morning Sickness, and she makes a point of putting her needs first and reprimanding Glen.
  • The Ingenue: She’s so pure and innocent, no matter how much torment and abuse the jealous servants AND Gregory put her through, and this makes Camille attracted to her even more.
  • The Pollyanna: She remains positive on her outlook on life and holds not a single grudge against all that wrong her. But more often than nought, she breaks down but goes right back to her usual cheerful self.

     Camille Lafayette
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a8e7f825_1840_4578_ac15_e7e043e3dc94.jpeg
Julia’s crush. He has his heart set on her, but has a rather… ahem, unhealthy mentality on his infatuation towards her.
  • Adoption Angst: He was originally born from the Lagrane family, but King Maximillien orders Marquess Lafayette to wiped them out root and stem, but made an exception with Camille and adopted him after killing his father, since he bears his family’s traditional blonde hair and possessed Arcana while his biological children did not. Camille planned his revenge for years against the Lafayettes for causing his birth family’s downfall. He would eventually succeed once he killed his adopted parents and siblings but spared their eldest son and heir, Gregory, but only so that he’ll force him take the fall.
  • Berserk Button:
    • DO NOT COME BETWEEN HIM AND JULIA. PERIOD.
    • For that matter, never try to seduce him if you value your life. Julia is the only one for him, and he will beat it into your head to death just so you will get the message.
    • Julia not reciprocating his love becomes his biggest trigger. After imprisoning her and catching Gregory trying to rape her, he accuses Julia of trying to seduce his brother and trying to escape. So he beats her so badly, to the point of drawing a huge amount of blood, only stopping when Julia tells of how much she loves him. Then his father invites Glen over to talk about the possibility of losing their Arcana to some type of illness. But Camille didn’t know that, he just jump to conclusions that Julia somehow alerted Glen to get her away, so he angrily confronts her of this. To the point of ripping off her dress, strongly implying that he rapes her in his fury of losing her to Glen. In chapter 41, it’s revealed he only punches her and never steals her virginity.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He comes off as a charming gentleman to everyone, especially to Julia, as well as look out for her from his jealous servants. But in the sidelines knows fully well of how much she is suffering, but he finds Julia in her most miserable state “attractive” so he looks the other way. Another reason that he refuses to stop the torment she receives from his servants and is because his comfort will force Julia to cling onto him even more and never leave him no matter how much shit is thrown at her.
  • Broken Pedestal: Julia originally saw him as her true love and was ecstatic to reunite with him after he saves her from getting assaulted by a stranger. Until he brings her home and imprisons her to the Toy Room just so he can keep her all to himself, with a chain leash for extra measure. Beating her bloody certainly shattered any infatuation she had left of him.
  • Decoy Protagonist: For a large potion of the beginning, the readers are led to believe he’s the male lead. Come chapter 8, he’s pushed to the background to make way for Glen, the true male lead.
  • False Soulmate: Julia was deeply in love with him since he was the only person to treat her so kindly, until his mask slips off and reveals he’s a major Yandere.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Once he’s kidnapped Julia for the second time, he’s surprised how submissive she’s become while nonchalantly dismissing Glen. Until he finds her repeatedly crying herself to sleep does he have serious second thoughts. Once he notices soldiers marching their way over under Maximillien’s command, he tells Julia that he has no need for her and orders her to go back to Glen’s side. Little to Julia’s knowledge, he’s written a letter to Glen that detailed Maximillien‘s plans and to hurry over and save Julia. At first Julia hesitates, believing it’s a Secret Test of Character, but he firmly tells her he does not love her and to leave him at once so that she’ll find Glen. She leaves, while Camille goes through an Inner Monologue, pleading towards Glen to protect Julia and make her happy while he tears through the enemy soldiers. This also causes his demise, but he has no regrets.
  • Kissing Cousins: He’s a member of the Lagrane family, and his father and Julia’s mother were siblings, making him and Julia first cousins. This doesn’t hinder him one bit from his mad love for her.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His golden hair is so long, he keeps it in a ponytail. Shoot, it can rival Julia in length.
  • Last of His Kind: He and Julia were the only survivors of the massacre of the Lagrange family, up until his Last Stand against the royal army. Leaving the Lagrane family extinct through the male line.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: As the son of a nobleman, it’s expected of him to only mingle with other highborn ladies. But he has his heart set on Julia, and will stop at nothing to have her back. As seen on his Berserk Button above, don’t even think about putting the moves on him if you want to get out alive.
  • The Medic: He can temporarily cure Julia’s muteness with his Arcana. Except it’s all bull. His true Arcana is actually like a curse bringer, as he uses his ability to force Julia to be a mute just because he’s extremely jealous of Julia talking to anyone but him.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Once he realizes how miserable Julia is by his side, he frees her to be with Glen. And he orders her to leave as quickly as she can while he Holds The Line against the royal army, which he eventually succumbs to.
  • Victory Is Boring: He’s satisfied to kidnap Julia a second time, but is quickly put off over how accepting Julia is now towards his affection. At night he creaks open her bedroom a little and finds her crying her heart out. Come daytime, Julia is all smiles and sunshines around him. At one point, he gives Julia a Forceful Kiss and gropes her. He threatens to force himself on her and asks Julia if she’s truly okay with it. Julia states she will, as she sees it as karma for surviving their family’s massacre while he suffered under their killers. Fortunately he doesn’t follow through his threat. He correctly deduces Julia’s fearless submission is all for Glen’s sake from his wrath. He eventually lets her go back to Glen in order to save her from Maximillien‘s army sent out to take her by force.
  • Wrong Guy First: He’s set up as a Decoy Protagonist and Julia’s love interest, until she finally sees him as a psycho and happily moves on with Glen.
  • Yandere:
    • He’s madly in love with Julia, but is okay with others tormenting her just so that he will swoop in like a Prince Charming and make her more devoted to him, thus manipulate Julia into never leaving him, no matter how miserable she is. Until his mother casts her out, does Julia long absence take a heavy toll on his love-crazed mentality. Enough to imprison Julia in the Toy Room, just so he can have her all to himself and will even beat her bloody and possibly rape her over his paranoia she doesn’t love him back.
    • Glen even theorized that he even killed his own parents, forced Gregory to take the fall, and faked his own death in order to get to Julia, making him all the more determined to protect her from Camille’s “love”.
    • Let this quote in chapter 28 speak for itself.
“I will kill you. If you speak with my Julia… or touch my Julia… or see my Julia… or take my Julia away from me… I WILL KILL YOU ALL!!
    • He eventually finds Julia and stabs her to get to Glen, heals her, then leaves Glen to die. Then Camille admits to Julia that he hates her for surviving their family massacre while he was adopted by the family that helped instigate the slaughter. He reveals his plan was to force her to be his just so he can torture her and love her. Subverted once Maximillien sends out soldiers to hunt them down so that Julia will be his mistress, and Camille finally admits he doesn’t deserve to be with Julia and orders her to go back to Glen.

     Glen De Vestris
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5d9bbb59_d365_4693_b9b2_2e8605606086.jpeg

A powerful duke who’s taken in Julia after her abandonment. He’s very fond of her, as she strongly resembles a longlost Childhood Friend of his and hopes that he’ll win her heart. And he will stop at nothing to protect Julia from all that harm her.

  • Babies Ever After: At the end of the series, he’s a proud father of a son and daughter, curtesy of Julia.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • He never left his visit from the Lafayette estate, he secretly posed as a new butler and work his away around the landscape to find Julia. Sure enough, he discovers her in the Toy Room and breaks her free.
    • Once he’s healed from the brink of death as a result of Camille’s abduction of Julia, he wastes no time trying to find her. Then Camille has a change of heart and sends him a letter predicting King Maximillien desiring Julia. He rides off to the secret location, only for the royal army to beat him to it. By the next chapter, he storms the palace and draws his sword the second Maximillien grabs onto Julia. He shames the king over his Yandere mindset and vows to always have Julia by his side. Julia manages to break free and they escape with Felix’s blessing of their engagement.
  • Big Damn Kiss: After Glen makes it clear to Julia that he and Ophelia are not engaged, Julia asks him if she can stay with him. Glen is so overcome with his love for Julia, he immediately grabs her and plants a kiss. After an embarrassed Julia pushes him off, Glen gently holds onto her, tells her not to think about either Camille or Ophelia, and asks Julia to be his. She agrees and they share a passionate kiss.
  • Coat Cape: His signature look.
  • Declaration of Protection: After discovering how rotten the Lafayette’s have been treating poor Julia, he promised to himself to keep her safe. After saving Julia from Camille’s imprisonment, he drops this trope to her numerous times.
  • Dogged Nice Guy:
    • A rather unique case as he’s not as forceful as the trope goes. He’s taken in Julia when she was nearly on the brink of death, nurses her back to health, gifts Julia beautiful clothing, has servants waited upon her, and arranges lunch and tea dates with her. Julia is oblivious that he has fallen in love with her, as she’s devoted to Camille but grateful to have such a kind friend like Glen.
    • That was the case, until Camille imprisons her to the Toy Room with a chained leash for extra measure. And is more than happy to accept Glen’s rescue and getting the heck out of Camille’s life forever. So Glen’s efforts were not put in vain as Julia starts to warm up to him even more, and even agrees to marry him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his introduction chapters, it’s established that he’s a duke, meaning he’s part of the highest class of nobility. This is several chapters into the series of witnessing the Lafayette family and their servants cruelty, so one would be forgiven for thinking he would be just as bad as the average nobleman would be. Yet when he stumbled upon a fainted Julia in the slums, he examines her and finds out just how badly she’s been tortured. So he takes her home and nurses her back to health. It’s made clear that for all of his blue blood ties, he’s still a Nice Guy at heart.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: It doesn’t take long for Glen to be captivated by Julia as she’s nursed back to health directly after saving her from her flogging and abandonment to the slums.
  • Nice Guy:
    • One look at Julia after her extreme torture and abandonment, he takes her to his home and nurses her back to health. As much as she insisted on working around out of gratitude towards him, Glen puts her needs first and tries at any given opportunity to force her to rest.
    • Until he gave up but put an agreement that she will only work for one hour, then she will rest, and they will spend some time together. He even gifts her beautiful dresses and has his servants waited upon her.
    • As much as he’s in love with Julia and jealous over her devotion to Camille, he refuses to force his feelings upon her and puts her safety from the Lafayette family as his first priority.
  • Official Couple: 3 months after he rescues Julia from Camille, he hosts a social gathering so that he can announce his engagement with her and prove she has Arcana.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Just like his lady love, he’s also noted to be very attractive on account of his pale skin and black hair.
  • Second Love: Becomes this for Julia.
  • Telepathy: His Arcana specialty but it only works if he touches someone. He refuses to use it ever since he first acquired his powers out of loathing, due to his fear of meeting seemingly good people that turned out to be horrible just by reading their thoughts, such as his Wicked Stepmother for hiding her true colors, and worried if Julia might be just as bad. Fortunately that wasn’t the case.
  • You Are Worth Hell:
    • He’s torn between his love for Julia, and King Maximillien’s impending wrath upon her family. He learned the hard way that anyone connected to Julia’s birth family, will be declared as rebels and executed. Julia tries to Take a Third Option, but he pleads with her to stay with him. He nearly dies once Camille comes back and steals away Julia. But once he’s healed, he rides off to rescue her, only to find that soldiers have delivered Julia to Maximillien. Come chapter 64, he storms the palace. A random soldier asks him if he’s okay with becoming a rebel. Glen doesn’t hesitate to declare, “I’d be happy to! It’s for Julia!“
    • Once he finds Julia in the throne room, she happily runs to him only for Maximillien to grab her in a choke hold. Glen immediately draws his sword and gives him a "Reason You Suck" Speech over his obsession toward his notion of love. He thinks about to his initial turmoil over losing his titles, wealth, and lands over his engagement to Julia, and declares he’s willing to throw it all away if it means having Julia by his side. In his mad daze, Maximillien loses his grip on Julia, who successfully runs away and into Glen’s arms. Glen tells him he’s free to do whatever he wants to his family’s domain, but Felix promises they won’t. In exchanged for his alliance, Felix grants his blessings to Julia’s and Glen’s engagement.

Lafayette Estate

     Marquess and Marchioness Lafayette
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/48a94c7f_93fb_4018_81d7_0841ed4bd131.jpeg

Parents of Camille and Gregory.

  • Asshole Victim: Both are killed by their own child, but hard to sympathize given how loathsome and cruel they are.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: They certainly love their high born status and treat everyone below them like dirt. Glen especially hates them, not just for their treatment of Julia, but of his past experience witnessing their cruelty towards their servants. The patriarch in reaches a new level once Camille reveals to Julia that he’s the one responsible for making their birth family, the Lagranes, declared as rebels and lead their execution. All just so he can adopt Camille since his biological son, Gregory, did not have Arcana. Camille was to one who talked him into making Julia their servant so that she will one day becomes his wife and their hypothetical child will marry his heir. Except this was all Camille’s plan to kill him, his wife, and the rest of his children, except for Gregory, who he framed for the deed.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: So Camille decides to help out on cleaning the kitchen floors that Julia was framed for, how does his mother respond? By ordering her whipped and kicked out!
  • Rich Bitch: The Marchioness is definitely this.

     Gregory Lafayette
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aaca84a8_957c_4ef6_854c_42f9f53eea28.jpeg

Camille’s older brother.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3972.jpeg
Exactly What It Says on the Tin. None of them inherited any Arcana, much to their father’s displeasure. They never got to appear in the story onscreen, and never get the chance since Camille eventually kills them all.
  • The Faceless: Their faces are left blanked whenever they’re mentioned.
  • Killed Offscreen: They’re all killed by Camille in this manner.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Camille killed them because their father helped purged the Lagrange family and forcibly adopted him as a means to have a future heir born from him and Julia. While they had nothing to do with Lagrange’s downfall and were brainwashed into believing Camille was always a part of their family, Camille killed them away to hit it where it hurts against their father, until he killed him with their mother.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Just like their eldest brother, Gregory, none of them have any Arcana abilities.

     Their servants
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/441ce18a_14ad_438b_97f4_58856a06bdc4.jpeg

Servants to the Lafayette family. They all live in fear of their bosses abuse, but deeply respect the much “kinder” Camille, but they’re extremely jealous of his infatuation towards Julia. So they’ll take out all of their frustrations onto her at ANY given opportunity.

  • Asshole Victim: That one extremely jealous freckle-face maid who loved to cause problems for Julia and frame her for it while playing innocent, gets beaten to death by Camille when she tries to seduce him while talking badly of Julia because he was aware of all her misdeeds which lead to Julia’s abandonment.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Dear lord, where do we start…
    • So Camille wants to surprise Julia by ordering her a baked brioche, the one food even the servants can’t afford to eat for themselves? Might as well dump all her meals on Julia as she just walks through the door and order an extremely long list of chores for her to do by herself.
    • Camille wants to schedule a lunch date with Julia? And you notice that Julia is the only servant he refers to by name? Why not lock her up in a shed, then let her out just to slap her around while tearing into her of how horrible she’s been for abusing Camille’s feelings for “forgetting” their date, without telling her about his plans in the first place!
    • Jealous over how infatuated Camille and Julia are to each other? Create a HUGE mess on the kitchen floors and frame Julia for it.
    • Camille comes to Julia’s defense and helps her clean up? Alert to the head maid and claim that Julia forced Camille to help her clean up the mess she caused and get her flogged and abandoned to the slums!
  • Evil Is Petty: They take out all of their frustration from their employers abuse onto Julia, just because they’re extremely jealous that their much “kinder” boss favors her the most.
  • Hypocrite:
  • Kick the Dog: They have no other reason to torment Julia than of their jealousy of Camille’s favoritism to her and annoyance for her muteness.
  • Just Following Orders: The head maid and another male servant quote this trope word for word when confronted by Camille and Gregory over Julia’s flogging and abandonment to the slums. They both threaten to kill said servants each are confronting at the moment unless Julia is brought back.
  • Ungrateful Bastard:
    • No matter how hard Julia works around the estate, they’re never satisfied of her dedication to her job and pile up even more work, all because of their petty jealousy over Camille’s infatuation towards her and are more than happy to finally be rid of her. Especially the freckle-faced maid who has the audacity to proclaim that Julia is terrible at doing her job and loves to frame her for messes she didn’t even do.
      • Until one of the maids decides to slack off and only focused on trying to charm Camille is she turned into their new punching bag. A couple of the maids complain over her laziness and compare her to Julia, because at least she was dedicated to the workload they pile up on her.

De Ventris Estate

The members of The de Ventris Estate both by marriage, blood or by employment.

    Duchess Suzanne De Ventris

Glen’s stepmother. She was originally his father’s mistress, which drove his first wife insane and took her own life because of this. Glen never forgave her for this, and once Julia comes into the picture, well, Suzanne does not want to give up on her position as duchess and stops at nothing to have her way.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Acts kind and nice to get into the De Ventris' good graces and wed. Once she gets there, her true desire for power and money come to fruition.
  • Gold Digger: Married into the house for the money, and is looking to find a way to manipulate Glen.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At the last chapter, she finally makes peace with Glen and Julia, and is especially more nicer to the latter as she comes down with Morning Sickness at her own wedding reception.
  • Manipulative Bastard: When Julia enters the De Ventris estate and threatens Suzanne's position, she sends word to Ophelia De Arcadia to chase her out.
  • Rich Bitch: Had an affair with Glen’s father in order to replace his wife and gain all his riches, resulting in Glen's mother suicide.
  • Wicked Stepmother:
    • She only married Glen's father to get his money and doesn't give a damn about her stepson or her husband. Before she married Glen’s father, she doted on Glen whenever his mother took out her frustrations onto him, said frustrations being her husband and Suzanne’s affair, but Glen didn’t realize this until he discovers her suicide. Then he notices Suzanne by his side while wearing a Slasher Smile.
    • She’s pleased that this left scars on Glen’s trust in everyone, especially around other women, until he stumbled upon Julia. She knows all to well that she’ll lose her position as duchess once Glen finds himself a wife, so she alerts Ophelia to get Julia out of the picture.
    • Subverted once Glen finds out Julia has traces of Arcana in her, which proves she has noble blood in her, and orders Suzanne to back off and support Julia. Surprisedly she agrees and seemly gets along well with Julia since Ophelia would often look down on her, until Julia’s true relation to Celestine Lagrange are revealed. She confronts Glen over this and chews him out.

     Simon
Glen's Advisor and facillitator of Glen's wishes
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Once Julia’s true birth is found out, he urges Glen to end his engagement to her, since her birth family, the Lagranes, along with people so much as acquainted, are marked as rebels and ordered to be execute. He’s tried to order Julia to back off, only for Glen to tell him off. He’s pleased when Julia tells them she’s willing to leave Glen.
  • The Good Chancellor: Will make sure that whatever Glen requests happens and his ideas are supported.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle and serves as Glen’s trusted advisor.
  • Honest Advisor: Simon will tell Glen what he needs to hear and put forth what is best for the people he rules.
  • The Spymaster: At Glen's request, he sends folks out to gather all possible information about the Lafayettes and their son Camille.

House Of Arcadia

    Ophelia De Arcadia

The princess of the country. She’s extremely determined to marry Glen and will stop and nothing to get Julia out of the picture.

  • Alpha Bitch: Definitely has this air around her. She even has at least one Girl Posse who belittles Julia when Ophelia’s not around.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She’s extremely infatuated with Glen, and tears down Julia for being too close to him.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Pink hair and eyes.
  • Kick the Dog: She talks shit towards Julia over Glen’s closeness to her, steps down on her hand with her high heels and kicks her face to the point of drawing blood, and threatens to have her killed unless Julia leaves him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While she hates Julia for getting between her and Glen, even she was horrified by her father and his extreme paranoia and obsession towards Julia, especially feeling unnerved by the plans he has in store for her. What does her father exactly has in store for Julia, who also happens to be his half-sister? Force her to replace her mother as his new mistress. It’s enough for Ophelia to let go of her love towards Glen and alerts him to where her father has Julia.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She helps Glen with reuniting with Julia from her impending doom under Maximillien‘s hand. Sure she originally wanted Glen all to herself and wished Julia dead, yet A Fate Worse Than Death as her father’s Sex Slave is low even for her. By the end of the series, she’s fully okay with befriending Julia, even becoming protective of her once she realizes Julia is pregnant before she could attend her own wedding reception. Enough to chew out Glen when he accuses her and Suzanne of making Julia cry.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She witness Glen storming the palace while declaring he’s more than happy to become a rebel if it means saving Julia from becoming The King’s new mistress. Even she knew her father went too far, and while it brought her to tears, Ophelia didn’t hesitate to alert Glen on where her father has Julia.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Along with matching her pink hair and eyes, most of her attires are frilly pink dresses, hair ribbons, and jewelry. But it also overlaps into her Villainous Princess side and turns her into a Psycho Pink when it comes to Julia getting between her and Glen.
  • Psycho Pink: As you noticed, she loves to dress in pink to match her hair and eyes. And she’s a major Royal Brat who abused her authority towards Julia by threaten to have her killed unless she leaves Glen, her most likely fiancé candidate. And will even try to harm Julia, wether it be by personally getting her hands dirty herself or via brainwashing her minions to do the job for her after Glen makes it clear that it’s Julia he wants to marry and not her.
  • Royal Brat: She’s a princess and definitely not the good kind either.
  • Yandere:
    • She has her heart set on Glen and is infuriated for someone like Glen who hated a lot of people to be near him has taken in a beautiful girl like Julia to live with him and dote on. Ophelia even threatens Julia that she can have her killed unless she leaves him. She’s infuriated when Glen hosts a social gathering to prove that Julia is of nobility class with her own traces of Arcana, wishes to marry her and asks for her brother and the crown prince’s blessing. Ophelia refuses this and tries to attack Julia, fortunately her brother stops her.
    • Even her father couldn’t stand his daughter’s objecting over his blessings of Julia and Glen’s engagement, so he ordered her to essentially be on house arrest while the couple visited the palace as it is hosting a ball. Her solution? Brainwash a group of men with her Arcana and attack Julia while Glen is away with the crown prince!

The Heir apparent to the kingdom.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Practically everyone addresses him by his royal title or just “Crown Prince” while his sister only calls him “Big Brother”. The only person so far to call him by his name is his father.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • He’s impressed that Julia has Arcana in her, meaning she’s born from nobility. Once his sister tries to attack Julia, he holds her back and orders her to back off.
    • Despite his initial threats to break apart Glen and Julia, he gets horrified by his father’s murderous rage turned obsessed love towards Julia, and is even more disgusted since he’s just learned that Julia is his father’s half-sister. He doesn’t hesitate to side with Glen over his father if it means protecting Julia. In chapter 65, he’s had enough of his father’s tyrannical state and decides then and there to dethrone his father, but not before blessing Glen and Julia’s engagement and promising not to attack Glen’s family as long as they’re allies.
  • Evil Nephew: He’s pleased to find out that Julia is his father’s half-sister, making her his aunt. He threatens Glen with this information into breaking up with Julia so that he’ll be free to marry Ophelia. Subverted once he’s confronted by his father, and gets horrified by his determination to have Julia all to himself, enough to aid Glen in saving Julia from his father.
  • They Just Dont Get It: He asks Glen on why he would want to marry Julia over his sister, since she’s a princess while Julia has nothing to offer. Glen states he simply fell in love, but the prince laughed at this.
  • Implied Death Threat: When it's revealed to Simon and Glen that Julia’s parents are the previous king and his father’s former mistress, he makes a plea to his duties and his responsibilities. Then infers that if he doesn't comply, Glen better be prepared to be labeled a Rebel. While mentioning that Julia’s mother and her relatives labeled as rebels and got exterminated, with not even the servants of the family being spared.
  • Oh, Crap!!: Gives this sentiment that when he tells himself "Glen isn't the problem, but he is." That “he” the prince is talking about is about his father, who’s extremely possessive and wants to have the woman who looks like his former lover. Especially more jarring since his father does not mind the fact that he wants her despite their relation being that of half-siblings.

     Maximillien The Fourth

His current and younger self
The current king of Arcadia, who just so happens to be The Caligula of this setting.
  • Blaming the Victim: He was deeply in love with Celestine, until his father raped her. Instead of comforting her, he blames Celestine for betraying him and marks her whole family as traitors.
  • The Caligula: Let’s just say he did NOT take it well when his father raped his lover, Celestine. Except be blames Celestine for betraying him and declares her, her whole family, and anyone connected to be marked as traitors. The penalty of treason being, well, hunted down like wild animals without a shred of mercy. He even orders Julia kidnapped and forced to be his new lover, despite originally wanted her dead and not considering their own blood ties, but he’s in denial and firmly believes she’s Celestine.
  • Villainous Incest: His father forced himself onto Celestine, resulting in Julia’s birth. He originally cried out for Julia’s death, even trying to do the job himself, but changes his mind when he finds out She's All Grown Up and resembles his former lover. So he orders an army to hunt down his half-sister so that she’ll be his new lover. Eww.

     Sigurd The Third

Maximillien’s father and the previous king.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While he did forced himself on Celestine, he was horrified by how his son reacted to her “betrayal”. He never touched Celestine after that incident and helped hide her and their child from his son’s demanding their deaths.
  • Papa Wolf: Against his own son. In context, he forcibly had his way with Celestine, resulting in Julia’s conception. He agrees to Celestine begging for his protection from Maximillien’s wrath against her and their child. For a long time he hid them in seclusion, until his health started to fail, and Maximillien took full advance of this.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He was “curious” over his son’s obsession towards his mistress, Celestine, since only he, the king at the time, was allowed to keep mistresses. One day, he decided to act on this and forced himself on her.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: All his past actions lead to dire consequences in the main story.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Maximillien resembles him strongly in the present day, but with shorter hair. His grandson inherits his long hairstyle though.

Other Characters

Celestine De Lagrange (MAJOR UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3976.jpeg
The former mistress of the current king, Maximillien. In the past, the previous king, Sigurd, felt curious over his son’s interest in her and forced himself on her. Not long afterwards, she gave birth to Julia. But Maximillien could not let this go and accuses her of betraying him and declared her family and anyone so much as acquainted as rebels. In her final years, she lived alone with her daughter, until the Lafayette family purged out her household, Celestine included. But she managed to save Julia from dying out with the rest of their family.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: The only thing that sets her apart for her daughter is their eyes.
  • Mama Bear: She gave birth in seclusion to a child conceived non-consensually, but that did not stop her from loving her baby and protecting her from her former lover’s wrath by asking protecting from his father Sigurd, the man who forcibly had his way with her, as a means to protect Julia.
  • Posthumous Character: She’s dead long before the start of the story, but everything involving her in life caused a great deal of suffering for Julia.
  • Poor Communication Kills: She never actually told Maximillien that his father forced himself on her, but he already came to that conclusion once she showed visible signs of pregnancy.
  • Rape as Backstory: Sigurd raped her out of his curiosity of his son’s attraction towards her.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Pale complexion and black hair, it’s a small wonder Julia takes after her.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her assault, which led to Julia’s conception, as well as their family’s downfall and her demise, pretty much layered out the road for Julia’s story.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Like Mother, Like Daughter. Celestine was also noted as extremely beautiful, and it warranted unwanted attention from the wrong sources. She was forced to hide her affair from her lover’s jealous wife, then her lover’s father raped her and impregnated her. Her lover believed she betrayed him and declared her and her entire family as rebels, leading to a purge.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She’s practically an exact carbon copy of her daughter, Julia. Glen almost mistaken her portrait as Julia’s.
  • The Mistress: She was in love with Maximillien, but couldn’t be together since besides his obvious marriage, he was only a prince at the time and only the king is allowed to keep mistresses. Maximillien forced her to have the role as “second crowned princess” and become his personal “vassal”. In truth she hated the pain it caused his legal wife and felt uncomfortable towards Maximillien growing more unhinged and obsessed towards her.
  • Walking Spoiler: Hard to talk about her without the spoiler tags covering everything.
