    Brad Morton
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_02_half_bakedmkv_snapshot_0704906.png

Voiced by: Matt Nolan

A jock at Jake's school. He constantly torments Jake and also tries to woo Rose whenever he gets the chance. It's eventually revealed that he got held back in 3rd-grade (twice!), making him at least two years than most of the other kids in his grade, including Jake and his friends.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To say Rose isn't flattered by his interest one bit since standing her up is one thing.
  • The Bully: Acts this way towards other kids, verbally putting them down or physically intimidating them, he'll mock and be a jerk to anyone. Brad seemingly inherited this from his father who abuses his station to harass civilians.
  • Butt-Monkey: Brad gets humiliated repeatedly over the course of the series, more than often because he’s an idiot. Special mention goes to the time Brad was in charge of a cabin at a camp in "A Ghost Story" and he was humiliated by not only having to file a police-report with nothing to wear but a towel (courtesy of Jake), the police didn’t believe his story about ghosts and when he tried to run after them and make them reconsider, Brad loses his towel. To add insult to injury, Jake filmed the whole scene and showed it to the rest of the camp afterwards.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Particularly towards Rose (and Jasmine) in season one, towards any pretty girl he can impress in season two. He doesn't appear to have any luck though, as he’s both too boastful, inconsiderate and about as charming as a dead fish. Not even the girl standing in the kissing booth in "Half-baked" reacts to his flirting, eating a cupcake instead of paying him attention.
  • Characterization Marches On: In Dragon Breath, while he appears to be a jerkass and is presented as a romantic rival for Jake, he is shown to have a slightly nicer side when he congratulates Jake on bringing a hot date and actually high-fives him. Later appearances turn him into a Jerk Jock bully.
  • The Ditz: He doesn't even recognize the word "parents" in a letter written on a sticky note. No wonder why he was held back in school twice.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Leaving Rose at the school dance for Jake's date.
  • Flanderization: Brad was a jerkass in the first series, but he was never outright hostile towards Jake. In the second series however, he goes out of his way to antagonize Jake at every opportunity. This is presumably done to make the instances in which he does get his commupence all the more satisfying.
  • Generation Xerox: His dad is also a blonde and uses his authority as a cop to bully others by homing in on their minor flaws or transgressions.
  • Hate Sink: He's a rude jerk with an ego who likes bullying Jake. That is all there is to know about him.
  • Held Back in School: As mentioned above, he got held back twice when he was in elementary, so he's at least two years older than the other students in his grade—plus, he gets his driver's license while still in middle school and in "Being Human" he mentions that he's doing his fourth end-of-eighth-grade prank which means that he might even be a legal adult if he was only held back in the eighth grade.
  • Hidden Depths: Surprisingly he has these. In “Dreamscape” he dreams of being a ballerina. In “The Talented Mr. Long” he claims to have taken piano lessons for 12 years, he’s just a very bad student.
  • Jerk Jock: Seriously, this guy makes Flash Thompson look halfway decent by comparison.
  • Kick the Dog: Abandoning Rose at the school dance for Jake's date.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: His reaction to a Nyx's eyes turning red and making an inhuman snarl? Playfully growl back. His reaction to a girl at a kissing booth turning into a Krylock mutant with lizard eyes, scorpion claws and a Xenomorph-like second mouth? "Jackpot!" It's entirely possible he's a literal example.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: He’s by far not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he’s rich enough to get a pro-skater to tutor/endorse him for a contest, problem is that he’s also a poor student at that.
  • Tempting Fate: He does this in "Being Human" after telling the whole class about his prank on Rotwood. "And as long as you little potty-squatters keep your traps shut, he'll never find out it's me!"
    Trixie: So Brad's suspended?
Jake: You call the whole class "potty-squatters", someone's bound to rat.
  • Third-Person Person: He almost always addresses himself as "The Bradster". Professor Rotwood even lampshades this in "The Talented Mr. Long".
  • Unmanly Secret: Aside from his dreams of being a ballerina, he's also afraid of the dark.

    Tracey and Lacey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_01_bring_it_onmkv_snapshot_0340875.png
Left: Tracey
Right: Lacey

Voiced by: Brenda Song (Tracey) and Kay Panabaker (Lacey)

Two of the co-captains of the cheerleading squad at Jake’s school, and Stacey’s best friends.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Downplayed, Tracy is the tallest of the Cheerleaders (whom Spud laud as all being beautiful) and is generally condescending towards others. She is also comparatively the more composed of the trio, as she doesn’t faint/is stunned at the sight of street clothes and tries to comfort Lacey after she does this, although she herself remains upset by the spectacle as well.
  • Asian Airhead: Downplayed, Lacey appears asian and she's not as quick on the uptake as her friends, such as when she agrees with Tracey when she directly insults her cheerleading skills, because they were talking about the perks of being a cheerleader a moment before.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Like Stacey, they like this look, both as part of the cheerleader uniform and with their regular wardrobe.
  • Beta Bitch: Both of them to Stacey, a downplayed case since they’re her best friends and doesn’t act as if she’s better than them, nor does she demand much of them.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Both of them together with Stacey and Trixie, courtesy of Fury in "Bring It On", they were basically Fury’s personal teenage girl fight team.
  • The Captain: Shares the position with Stacey.
  • Catchphrase: “Oh, totes!”
  • Dance Battler: Justified, as their figthingstyle is based on cheerleader moves.
  • Drama Queen: Lacey almost faints and must be told by Tracey to take deep breaths after they see Trixie’s favorite clothes (which consists entirely of street and hiphop garment).
  • The Fashionista: They LOVE fashion and regularly dress to impress. Upon seeing the designer clothes Trixie's mom gave her, they can instantly tell the label, designer and that they're exclusives.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It’s implied that Lacey might be this.
Tracey: The day I pay for facials is the day I believe Lacey’s as good a co-captain as me and Stacey.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Laceys hairstyle, perhaps mirroring her intelligence.
  • Mugging the Monster: In their first episode, when they couldn't pass before a wall without insulting it, they and Stacey insulted Fury. They got off easy, given they were just brainwashed...
  • Satellite Character: Exaggerated, they’re both this to Stacy and has no other role than that in the series, they’re only ever shown in her company.
  • Only One Name: Unlike Stacey, we never learn either of their last names.
  • Those Two Girls: They are never seen without one another.

    Danika Hunnicut
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_american_dragon_jake_long_s02___22mkv_snapshot_0755498.png

Voiced by: Jessica DiCicco

A cute swim team captain at Jake's school. After Rose moves to Hong Kong, Jake decides that Danika is the one for him once he decides to get back into the dating game.

  • Ascended Extra: For most of season two, Danika is a silent extra making occasional appearances until the episode "Siren Says" where she finally plays a role.
  • The Captain: Downplayed, she’s the captain of the school’s swim team.
  • Costume Evolution: Danika's outfit early in season two is rather different and it is forgiven if one couldn't recognize her. Initially, she her outfit is mostly pink and she also wears a pink hat. Since "Siren Says", she wears a blue dress and a choker.
  • Nice Girl: She is a sweety, accepting a gift from another girl that she’d beaten in an auction for a guy and (eventually) forgiving Jake for accusing her of stealing said gift, which had left her in tears.
  • On the Rebound: To Jake after the events of “Homecoming”.
  • Red Herring: She's the main suspect in the identity of the siren who's trying to kill Jake. She's not. The real siren is framing her.
  • Replacement Goldfish: She's Jake's new love interest after the events of "Homecoming", but it only lasts for a single episode before she dumps him. She does however forgives Jake and becomes his partner for graduation day but any possible romance between them is short-lived as Jake eventually reunites with Rose.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: Trixie suspects her of being an evil siren attempting to brainwash Jake into committing suicide, but she's really just a nice person who was manipulated by Vicky into wearing her brainwashing necklace.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The siren, Vicky, uses Danika to control Jake through the necklace she gave her.

    Courtney
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_111_shapeshifter_snapshot_0442694_7.png

Voiced by: Kali "Kittie" Troy
"I am so bummed that you can't go to the concert tonight."

Rose's friend and the tallest girl in school and two years older than Rose.

  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed, Courtney always silent in season one throught the series. She gets along with Rose and the other girls. But she's speaks on numerous times.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Downplayed, she's taller than Rose (who's a head taller than Jake) but it's not really considered a big deal.
  • Put on a Bus: Appears in seven episodes as a character throughout season one, including in "Ring Around the Dragon" where she can be seen in the attendence where Jake Long as "Dragon Fire" defated Hobie the Giant for the K.W.E.L. Championship. In season two she's nowhere to be seen.

    Joshua and Tricia
Voiced by: Unknown
Two classmates who have a relationship the main trio briefly envies.
  • Goth: Joshua wears dark clothing and has a poetic soul. He's a Perky Goth while he and Tricia are in a relationship but gets much more gloomy during their brief breakup.
  • One-Shot Character: They only appear in "The Love Cruise" to add a few faces and a little extra drama to the plot. Tricia is absent a few episodes later when the cheerleading squad is seen bidding on Brad at a bachelor auction.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: Tricia is unashamed about dating a Goth and does a public cheer about their relationship.
Tricia: Gimme an L-O-V-E! Love is real for you and me!
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Tricia is a vibrant and expressive cheerleader, while Joshua is normally calm and even initially takes being dumped (due to Cupid's Arrow making Tricia briefly fall out of love with him) in a reserved way.

Jake's Family

    Patchouli Long
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_06_adventures_in_troll_sitting___fu_dog_takes_a_walkmkv_snapshot_0442696_1.png

Voiced by: Wendie Malick

Jake's paternal aunt and Jonathan's younger sister. She only appears once during season one and is briefly mentioned in season two.

  • Amicable Exes: Exaggerated, her relationship with Stan Lipkowski is very affectionate even after many years apart, to the point where it looks like they’re dating again (their evening plans definitely qualify as one).
  • Cool Aunt: Her relationship with both Jake and Haley is on the friendly and affectionate side.
  • Interspecies Romance: She dated Stan during their college years in the 80’s and might be doing it again. Justified, since she doesn’t know he’s a troll.
  • May–December Romance: Exaggerated with Stan, he mentioned in “Old School Training” that he hadn’t seen Fu Dog in hundreds of years, so he’s naturally centuries older than Patchouli.
  • One-Shot Character: She only appears in one episode, justified as it’s implied that she doesn’t live in New York.
  • Round Hippie Shades: Patchouli regularly wears a pair of these, fitting with her cool aunt aesthetic.

    Susan's Family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_12_feeding_frenzymkv_snapshot_1004886.png
Left to right: Great Uncle Wing, Susan, Aunt Cathy, Great Aunt Chiu, and Aunt Mai
Voiced by: Amy Hill (Aunt Cathy)
Susan and Lao-Shi's part of the family, all magical dragons. It goes back at least three generations.
  • All There in the Manual: While the only explicitly named members of the family are Aunt Cathy, Uncle Lee, Cousin Greggy and his younger brother Andrew, according to Jeff Goode’s website, the elder members of the family’s names are Aunt Mai, Great Aunt Chiu and Great Uncle Wing, while Greggy’s younger sisters are named Carrie and Montana.
  • Baby Factory: Downplayed, but Cathy has five children of different ages.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Zig-zagged, while the family meets once a year for a reunion and maintains an air of civility, Lao-Shi directly says that the family have a strong tendency to end up in a huge fight with each other, fists optional. The eldest generation even see the buildup as more entertaining and enjoyable than the socializing, as they treat it like a sports event. Though while they don’t get a long, at least they don’t use their dragon powers on each other.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: The elder generation of the family (Lao-Shi’s) can’t keep their magical nature hidden, in fact, most of the time, they’re not even trying to. As Susan puts it, “For Pete’s sake, I couldn’t even enjoy my own wedding reception!”
    • Great Uncle Wing casually used his fire breath to heat food at Susans’ wedding.
    • Aunt Mai brought a box of 99 Garden Gomes as a wedding present and then unleashes them in full view of Jonathan.
    • Great Aunt Chiu, although unintentionally, transforms into a dragon every time she sneezes, which is a regular occurrence.
  • The Clan: Not as clear cut as other examples of the trope, but their dragon ancestry and accompanying responsibilities binds them together, albeit loosely and not without troubles, see Big, Screwed-Up Family above.
Jake: "We’re a family of dragons punk! You can threaten us all you want!"
  • Clashing Cousins: Clashing everything in at least three generations of the family in fact. Special mention goes to Jake and Greggy and Susan and Cathy.
  • Doting Parent: Cathy towards her children, especially Gregory.
  • Dragon Ancestry: They’re all dragons, however not all are gifted with the powers.
  • Dreaded Kids' Table: Filled with the snot-nosed youngest generation of the family. And the others after they ended up in a huge fight.
  • Family Disunion: Good grief yes.
  • Fantastic Racism: Cathy openly mocks Susan for marrying Jonathan, a normal human.
    Cathy: "Right, the non-magical husband."
  • Foil: The family got a few besides Jake and Greggy.
    • Cathy and Susan; neither have dragon powers but their eldest sons’ are both dragons. But where Susan supports her son and his decisions while still having a strict side to discipline Jakes’ behavior, Cathy tells Greggy what to do and thinks he’s a brave and able dragon despite the overwhelming evidence against it.
    • Haley and Cathy’s younger children (especially Andrew); while the former is mature and tries to treat others with respect, the latter are bratty but generally acts their age.
  • Hate Sink: They're all a bunch of Upper Class Twits who spoil their own while belittling and mocking anyone who they see as an outsider, even if they're technically family. Cathy encourages Greggy to be rude and disrespectful to Jake while they all treat his actions as the American Dragon as if they were cutesy kid adventures rather than life-risking battles.
  • Jerkass: The whole family is guilty of this, though they usually mask it under either a civilized veil/snide remarks or pranks. When called out on it, the behavior can easily erupt into fistfights. It’s to the point where Jake prefers dealing with Tiburon and his goons over socializing with his relatives (The shark gang prefers prison over having to deal with them).
  • Meaningful Name: Great Aunt Chiu is the one who uncontrollably shifts into her dragon form every time she sneezes. Also doubles as a Punny Name.
  • Permissive Parents: Cathy actively encourages her son to be callous and unrepentant in his battles, even if it's for something as small as deciding who's the stronger dragon between him and Jake.
  • Rich Bitch: Aunt Cathy in a nutshell. She owns the island in Florida where the family reunion is held and doesn’t treat either Susan or Jake (who is a fully-fledged and experienced dragon at this point) with any respect.

    Cousin "Greggy" Gregory
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_12_feeding_frenzymkv_snapshot_0619637.png
Click here for his dragon form

Voiced by: Will Friedle

Jake's annoying younger cousin who just mastered his dragon form.

  • Attention Whore: He's worse than Haley.
Greggy: No way I'm letting Jake steal my glory!
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Not surprisingly, he steals Jake’s: “Dragon Up”.
  • Clashing Cousins: With Jake, whom he treats like garbage because of his ego.
  • Foil: To his older cousin, Jake. Both of them are from the same family and have a certain ego, but Jake is more mature in comparison as well as experienced while Greggy is still a newbie and lets his ego get the better of him.
  • Green and Mean: A downplayed version. Greggy's main color scheme, in and out of dragon form, is green and while he's a Jerkass he does have his better moments.
  • Hate Sink: He's not the villain of the episode, but after all his Jerkass behaviors like constantly belittling Jake, essentially cheating during their dragon contest, abandoning Jake when he's attacked by Tiburon and his gang, and trying to take all the credit for Tiburon's defeat when Jake had actually saved his life, who wouldn't be on Jake's side when he finally gets so fed up that he pounces on Greggy at the end of the episode?
  • Jerkass: An immature, annoying teen with an even bigger ego.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Greggy may be an annoying jerk but during his race with Jake around the island he was technically right that they were supposed to go around once, which made Greggy the winner since Jake went around more than once.
  • Mirror Character: Jake and Greggy are from the same family and both inherited the family lineage of dragon transformation and are very egotistical regarding their abilities, but Jake has the experience to back the confidence up, and Greggy falls into "overconfident," very similar to how Jake was when the series first began.
  • Outgrowing the Childish Name: With him getting his dragon powers, he insists on being called Gregory instead of "Greggy".
  • Shadow Archetype: He more or less measures how immature Jake used to be before his Character Development the past series.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Thinks that since he has JUST mastered his dragon form, he's more experienced than Jake.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Subverted. He does thank Jake after he's rescued from nearly drowning, but as soon as Jake gives him the tiniest bit of credit for helping save the day, his ego comes back full force and he then claims that he saved Jake.
  • Youthful Freckles: Greggy has noticeable freckles and is very immature for his age.

Other Magical Creatures

    Jasmine

Voiced by: Lacey Chabert
"I had a really nice time, except for the whole, you know... Sorry. Again."

A girl that went on a date with Jake in “Dragon Breath”, unbeknownst to him, she is actually a nix he fought earlier. She only appeared in season one, but was quite popular with fans.

  • Bad Date: Not her fault as much as Jake’s for ignoring her curfew and not considering Jasmine’s magical background, but she still takes responsibility for how it went.
Jasmine: ”So, um, I'm not sure how to put this, but... I'm sorry I tried to suck the souls of all of your friends at the dance”.
  • Dude Magnet: Every. Single. Guy. (even Spud) at the school dance is awestruck as soon as they lay eyes on her, Brad Morton in particular, much to his dates’ chagrin (and eventually Jasmine’s as well).
  • Expy: While it may just be a coincidence, she bears an uncanny resemblance to, is considered a Dude Magnet akin to, and is a Humanoid Abomination much like Junji Ito’s Tomie. Her beauty mark is even in the same spot!
  • Foreshadowing: Her eyes briefly glow red when near moonstones in Magus Bazaar and again when a picture is taken of her, both hinting at her nix nature.
  • Hot in Human Form: Considered the “most beautiful girl” at the dance by many of the teenagers there, they’re a bit horrified when she transforms.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Shows up in a few episodes as a background character throughout season one, including in “Bodyguard Duty” where she can be seen amongst a crowd of spectators.
  • Put on a Bus: Appears as an important character in only one episode. Justified in universe, as she mentions she’s only in New York for a few days to visit family.
  • Split Personality: Justified as the Lunacy of her race turns her into a soul-sucking monster. Her regular personality doesn’t have a bad bone in her body.
  • Trophy Wife: Downplayed, as it's a case of trophy date rather than a wife. Brad pursues her because she's the "most beautiful girl" at the dance, ditching his original date in the process. Similarly, but in a much lighter way, Jake dated her so he could impress Rose.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: At first glance, Jasmine is a dead ringer for Tomie - both are dark-haired young girls with noticeable moles under their left eyes, cause men to fall head over heels for them upon merely glancing at them, and happen to be a Humanoid Abomination. But while Tomie is fully aware of what she is doing and willingly abuses everyone she comes across, Jasmine is only malicious due to her Superpowered Evil Side, and is otherwise friendly to everyone she meets.
  • Women Prefer Strong Men: Played with, Jasmine seemingly doesn’t mind seeing Jake turn into a dragon and then rough up a goblin and an ogre for the sake of Fu. Maybe justified from the elevated position of dragons in the magical community.

    Witches of Woodstock
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_28_game_onmkv_snapshot_0457759.png
Left: Monica
Middle: Annika
Right: Bubonica

Bubonica, Monica and Annika are a trio of witches that lives on a secret island and fall instantly in love with any man they see.

  • Aerith and Bob: Annika and Monika have normal names, Bubonica doesn’t.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: The Witches brew potions that can destroy even the most powerful magical objects. Each of the witches have a specific task in the potion brewing: Monika stirs the cauldron and keeps an eye on the contents. Annika picks out the ingredients and adds them to the cauldron. Bubonica adds the final ingredients and finishes the potion.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Downplayed, the witch trio falls instantly in love with any man that comes to their island, age isn’t a hindrance for them (they find Lao Shi attractive) nor species (Fu Dog), and they will gush over every single positive trait they believe their crush possesses. Though this doesn’t stop them from teasing the guy if he messes up or giving him critique. Nor do they seem to find males that’re hostile towards them attractive, such as mountain goblin thieves.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Annika, Bubonica and Monica (In that order) fits this to a T.
  • Cute Witch: Their perky and flirtatious attitude combined with their youth makes them this.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Although they’ll gush over any man they meet, they’re really not onboard with cheaters and liars, whom they’ll shun even after they make amends.
  • Girlish Pig Tails: Annika’s haircut.
  • Hot Witch: Naturally Downplayed for a Disney cartoon, but this is Jake’s opinion as the trio is far more attractive and younger than he thought they’d be.
  • Island of Mystery: Downplayed, the witches live on a secret island magically concealed in the Hudson River, but they’re the only magical creatures on it.
  • Magic Cauldron: They brew their magic object destruction potions in one of these.
  • The Weird Sisters: There are three witches, but they’re really quite pleasant girls.
  • Youthful Freckles: Annika has them.

Other Mundane People

"Hey, Haley. I just wanted to wish you good luck at the dance audition tomorrow. You'll need it."

A fellow Child Prodigy and Haley's rival. She’s the current owner of Yan-Yan (aka "Miss Tinkles").

  • Art Shift: In season one, she had bright orange curly hair pulled into pigtails. In season two, her hair is a darker shade and now in a straight ponytail, and she now has Youthful Freckles.
  • Alpha Bitch: A grade school variation. She constantly taunts and looks down on Haley, and isn't afraid to resort to foul play to get what she wants.
  • Attention Whore: She’s on par with Haley. It was the main reason she always brought “Miss Tinkles” to Show and Tell.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She always comes across as kind and polite to her older peers. Even Jake thought she was just a “sweet little girl” when first meeting her, much to Haley’s indignation. It’s only after he switches bodies with Haley that he realizes just how cruel Olivia can be, especially to his sister.
  • Child Prodigy: Like Haley, she’s skilled in a lot of things, particularly violin and ballet.
  • Expy: Arguably of Mertle Edmonds from Lilo & Stitch: The Series. They even share the same voice actress!
  • The Rival: To Haley. They both constantly compete to see who is the better Child Prodigy and get all the attention from their peers.
  • True Blue Femininity: In both seasons, her outfit mainly consists of the color blue. The only exception to this is her pink ballet outfit.
