Akumaizer 3

    In General

Akumaizer 3

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otherheroes_akumaizer3_pose.jpg
From left to right: Gabra, Xavitan and Evil.
A trio of defectors from the Akuma Clan who dedicated themselves to protecting humanity.
  • Badass Biker: They each ride around on Cool Bikes called the Gallivers, which are capable of connecting to form the Garibard.
  • Cool Sword: They each wield Jankel rapiers.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Evil and Gabra both joined Xavitan after he defeated them but spared their lives.
  • Demonic Possession: In Choujin Bibyun, the three Choujins are empowered by being possessed by the spirits of each of the Akumaizer 3.
  • Expy: While not an overt copy, the Akumaizer 3 clearly take some inspiration from Kamen Rider, as do many other Toku heroes. They're Cyborgs who ride on Cool Bikes, derive their powers from the villain faction and fight to defend humanity while at the same time grappling with their own lack of being human. The sequel show, Choujin Bibyun, even uses rejected Kamen Rider designs for its heroes.
  • Finishing Move: Their "Magic Circle Attack", which involves Evil and Gabra flinging Xavitan at an enemy with such force that, upon being stabbed, the enemy explodes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: They perform the Akumaizer Attack, even though it will kill them, in order to vanqusih Geberu and put an end to the Akuma Clan invasion.
  • Horrifying Hero: Supposedly, they look very terrifying to humans, which leads a lot of people to mistake them for villains at first.
  • Master Swordsmen: All of them wield Jankel swords and are masters of the blade.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Cyborg Swashbuckler Demons, in fact.
  • Power Trio: They aren't called the Akumaizer 3 for nothing.
  • Primary-Color Champion: All three predominantly have red and yellow in their color scheme, except for Gabra who also has a great deal of blue.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: By the end of the series, their bodies are destroyed and their souls are sealed inside three capsules, which would go on to empower the Choujins.
  • True Companions: On their own each of them could easily be felled by their Weaksauce Weakness, which is why they rely on each other to account for such.

    Xavitan

Xavitan/Kenji Nagumo

Portrayed by: Makio Inoue (voice), So Takizawa (as Kenji Nagumo)

  • Dead Guy Junior: According to the Akumaizer 3 SIC Hero Saga, his father was Xavitan, a demon who rebelled against Mezalord and died trying to free a group of human hostages that included his mother Chiyo. After his father's death, Chiyo named her newborn son "Xavitan" after him.
  • Finishing Move: In addition to "Magic Circle Attack" he performs with his teammates, Xavitan can also mount two miniature cannons on his shoulders to perform his "Xavitan Nova" attack to finish off an enemy.
  • Guile Hero: Frequently uses his wits to gain the upper hand on the Akuma Clan and foil one of their plans.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Is only half-demon, as his mother is a human.
  • Handicapped Badass: In episode 24 he's left unable to revert from his human disguise by Okamida, but still manages to hold his own against Aguma for a while.
  • Hidden Depths: Xavitan seems to have a bit of a goofball side to his personality and isn't above playing pranks on his teammates, such as when he (disguised as Ippei) competed against Evil in a friendly shooting match.
  • Human Disguise: He initially uses Ippei's appearance whenever he needs to go undercover as a human, but later gains his own original human identity as Kenji Nagumo.
  • Intrepid Reporter: As Kenji Nagumo, he's a reporter for the Touto Times newspaper and Gensaku's favorite one at that, mostly because he's more willing to cover normal stories than Jun and Ippei, who would rather investigate the Akuma Clan.
  • The Leader: of the 3.
  • Magnetic Hero: Xavitan's honor and drive draws many to his cause, including Evil and Gabra as well as several other demons throughout the series.
  • Manly Tears: Sheds tears whenever he loses a loved one. it doesn't make him any less badass.

  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's quite handsome in his human form as Kenji and is shown to be taller than the other characters.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: While he's willing to give most demons a chance if they show signs of wanting to turn good, he refusing to entertain anything of the sort for Mezalord given how many people he heartlessly killed.
Xavitan: Mezalord! You have killed countless good people! You killed Evil's girlfriend, Gabra's friend, Darunia's sister, and my kind mother! I won't forgive you!
  • Weaksauce Weakness: An amulet shaped like the Akuma crest can cause him intense pain when he sees it.

The vain sharpshooter of the Akumaizer 3.

  • BFG: His Jou Gun, which lets him shoot electric-charged ammo.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Starts off a part of the Demon Clan but turns good after Xavitan saves his life.

  • Object Shifting: Has the ability to shapeshift into inanimate objects, such as a bucket or fan or even a giant smokestack.
  • Surveillance Drone: Is capable of detaching a bat-like flying device from his belt and using it to spy on things.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Pun aside, Evil starts out as a willful member of the Akuma Clan and even when he turns good, he takes time to thaw out and become less aloof. He was even willing to shoot a group of children in one episode (albeit ones who'd been recruited to be Child Soldiers by an Akuma Clan captain, but still).
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Seeing his reflection makes him freeze up.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In episode 8 he was perfectly willing to kill a group of children who'd been tricked into becoming enemy soldiers by Dogura, and had to be talked out of it by Xavitan.

    Gabra

Gabra

  • Good Is Dumb: The nicest of the three, but also the most naive and simpleminded.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Xavitan defeats him but helps heal his wounds, Gabra decides to take him up on his offer and join his side, assisting him in rescuing the human civilians Mezalord captured.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: He's a big dumb friendly goof who likes playing with children. He's apparently one In-Universe as well, as #26 sees him entertaining a kindergarten class in his "Gabra-Cho" ostrich form.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Even while he was in the Akuma Clan, he wasn't all that evil and was quick to join Xavitan when he gave him the offer.

Allies

    Ippei Shima

Ippei Shima

Portrayed by: Jiro Chiba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ippei_shima.jpg
A human who works as a reporter at the Touto Times newspaper whom Xavitan befriends.
  • Badass Normal: He can't do much against the Akuma Clan captains, but he's capable of holding his own against their Mooks.
  • Cool Big Bro: To his younger brother Mitsuhiko, whom he takes for rides on his motorcycle and occasionally brings along when he's investigating the Akuma Clan, though he does his best to keep him out of danger.
  • Expy: A Badass Normal investigator who acts as a sidekick to our heroes? Played by Jiro Chiba? Sounds a lot like Kazuya Taki!
  • Intrepid Reporter: He's always on the hunt for the next big scoop, even if no one believes him when he says demons from the center of the Earth are invading.

    Jun Nagisa

Jun Nagisa

Portrayed by: Miyuki Hayata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jun_nagisa.jpg
A colleague of Ippei and another human whom Xavitan becomes friends with.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She disappears from the series after #27
  • Demoted to Extra: She starts off a fairly important character, and it's her who's the first to meet Xavitan, but as the series goes on her roles in the episodes get increasingly smaller while Darunia becomes the Akumaizer 3's main female ally.
  • The Heart: She's the most compassionate of Xavitan's allies.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Like Ippei she's a daring reporter for the Touto Times.

    Mitsuhiko Shima

Mitsuhiko Shima

Portrayed by: Kenji Kobane

Ippei's kid brother.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: At least towards Gensaku, who he often annoys by asking "why?" whenever he says something.
  • Tagalong Kid: He's just a child, but Ippei and Jun let him tag along on their investigations.

    Gensaku Akita

Gensaku Akita

Portrayed by: Kazuo Iwaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gensaku_akita_ep5.jpg
The editor-in-chief of the Touto Times and boss of Jun and Ippei. Often annoyed by the two of them going off to investigate the Akuma Clan rather than do proper reporting.
  • Agent Scully: Denies the existence of the Akuma Clan, despite all the times he's stumbled into incidents involving them. He finally sees the truth when he gets attacked by Geberu and his Elite Army.
  • Dramatic Irony: Doesn't believe in the Akuma Clan or demons. His favorite employee, Kenji, is a demon in disguise.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His over-the-top reactions to things are the source of much of the comedy.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Zig-zagged. He's easily irritated and prone to getting into arguments with Mitsuhiko, but there's no indication he's a bad boss necessarily.

    Darunia

Darunia

Voiced by: Rihoko Yoshida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darunia_ep1.jpg
A member of the Downworld intelligence bureau who shows up frequently to help the 3.
  • Animesque: Her design, in contrast to the other demons, has big anime-like eyes and a more humanlike face.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up several times to save the Akumaizer 3 when they're in danger.
  • Cain and Abel: Majoruka is her sister and a loyal servant of Mezalord.
  • The Fair Folk: Has an elf-like appearance with her humanoid face and pointy ears, and is quite a trickster (though usually only directed at the Akuma Clan).
  • Fair-Play Villain: She feigns being this in the beginning to help the Akumaizer 3, intervening whenever an Akuma Clan Captain uses an underhanded tactic like threatening children to make it so the Akumaizer 3 can have a fair fight.
  • Friend to All Children: In her free time, she can usually be seen playing with Mitsuhiko or whoever the kid of the week is.
  • Love Interest: Has a crush on Xavitan, which is the main reason why she helps the Akumaizer 3 out in the beginning.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: In the beginning she would announce her arrival by letting out a very refined laugh at whomever the Demon Captain of the Week was.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She's not pink herself, but her "Darunia Beam" is, as are the flower petals that signal her arrival.
  • Red Is Heroic: Is a redhead and one of the primary allies to our heroes.
  • Sixth Ranger: After her defection, she effectively becomes the unofficial fourth member of the Akumaizer 3 and occasionally assists them in battles.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Her "Jankelken" can be converted from a gun into a sword for blade-fighting.
  • Token Good Teammate: Is the only member of the Akuma Clan for the first half of the show who isn't opposed towards the Akumaizer 3, helping them occasionally. The only reason she doesn't join them right away is because Mezalord is holding her sister hostage.

    Demon Peace Party

Bascal, Namenameda, Noppelar, Noppelar Jr

Voiced by: Akira Kamiya (Bascal), Shun Yashiro (Namenameda), Ichirō Nagai, (Noppelar), Satoshi Furukawa (Noppelar Jr.)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/demon_peace_party_ep37.jpg
From left to right: Bascal, Namenameda, Noppelar Jr. and Noppelar.
A group of demons who once fought against the Akumaizer 3 before joining their side. They're trying to seek peace between humanity and the Akuma Clan.
  • Doting Parent: Noppelar is quite caring and protective of his son.
  • Heel–Face Turn: All except Bascal were once enemies of the Akuma Clan.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Even while he was an Akuma Clan captain, Noppelar wasn't particularly evil. He spent more time playing with his son and helping a village solve their water shortage that did for his actual mission.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: They rose to power in Downworld, ousted the warmongering faction, reformed the Akuma Clan and ended their surface invasion. All offscreen.
  • Parent-Child Team: Noppelar and Noppelar Jr.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Bascal's primary colors are red, blue and white, and he's definitely one of the most heroic demons in the series.

Akuma Clan

    In General

General Tropes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akuma_tribe.jpg
A race of Cyborg demons who live underground and seek to conquer the surface so they can use humanity as a slave labor force.
  • Armies Are Evil: The Akuma Clan have a distinct militaristic vibe to them, with their mooks dressing like soldiers and much of their weaponry being things like regular tanks and bazookas. As the series goes on it becomes apparent that it's not the Akuma Clan itself that's wholly bad, so much as its military leaders who are looking to add the surface to their domain
  • Cool Sword: All soldiers of the Akuma Clan carry rapier-like swords called Jankels.
  • Heel–Race Turn: The end result of the Akumaizer 3 and Demon Peace Party's efforts is the Akuma Clan reforming and making peace with humanity, though a few warmongers like Mezalord and Geberu still exist.
  • Horns of Villainy: A good chunk of the evil Akuma Clan demons have horns jutting out of their heads.
  • Magitek: The Akuma Clan are both technologically and magically advanced, and much of their machinery combines those two things.
  • Monster Mash: The Akuma Clan's ranks include walking skeletons, western monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, Wicked Witches, Oni, other Youkai, dragons, Chinese mythological monsters like Kirin and other Japanese mythological monsters like Namazu.
  • Monster of the Week: Each episode sees a different Demon Captain going after the Akumaizers.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Cyborg Demons. Depending on the Akuma captain, they might be able to add "Youkai" or some other title onto it.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: The main reason for their invasion is to use humans as slave labor to power their machinery.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Here they're a Cyborg race that practices magic and lives in the center of the Earth.
  • Sigil Spam: The Akuma Clan crest is plastered on everything they use, be it their belts, vehicles or even their blenders.
  • Youkai: A good number of them are themed after Youkai, including Akanida and Aonida, Tengular, Kasadlar, Kamaitachi, Yuki Onna, Onitengu and Kitsunen.

    Mezalord

Mezalord

Portrayed by: Mahito Tsujimura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mezalord.jpg
The cruel regiment commander of the Akuma Clan and the one in charge of their surface invasion.
  • Bad Boss: Is prone to beating his subordinates with his rod as a form of Corporal Punishment to keep them in line.
  • Big Bad: The military leader of the Akuma Clan and the one heading their war on humanity.
  • Big Red Devil: Inverted. He's blue.
  • Came Back Strong: His "Mezalord Regeneration" power lets him not only revive from death, but makes him even stronger than he was before each time he revives.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: Is lord of the Akuma Clan.
  • Emperor Scientist: In addition to being a high-ranking minister and military leader of Downworld, he's also the inventor of some of the technology the Akuma Clan uses.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first we see of him, he's torturing a group of human hostages to separate the weak (whom he plans to kill and use their blood to make wine) from the strong (whom he plans to use as slaves to power the Akuma Clan's machinery).
  • Evil Genius: He's a capable inventor, as seen by the device he made in episode 7 to short-circuit the Akumaizer 3's machinery, and a skilled magic-wielder on top of that.
  • The Heavy: Every villainous demon in the show is either working on orders from or with the consent of Mezalord.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has two long horns atop his head, making him resemble a classic horned devil.
  • I Have Your Wife: Loves this tactic.
    • In episode 2 he captures Xavitan's human mom and threatens her life to get Xavitan to surrender. Instead, Xavitan's mom encourages him to keep fighting, leading him to kill her.
    • It's revealed in episode 10 that Xavitan had twin circuits implanted in the heads of Darunia and Majoluka, which would torture the other sister whenever one of them did something to defy the Akuma Clan.
    • In episode 32, he kidnaps Kirinda's daughter in order to blackmail him into servitude.
  • Not Quite Dead: The heroes think they've killed him several times across the show, but he always comes back a few episodes later.
  • Praetorian Guard: In later episodes he's often seen accompanied by a pair of specialized Aguma who act as his bodyguards.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Averted. He fights the heroes several times and doesn't seem to be much stronger than your standard Monster of the Week. Played straight later however when he revives using his "Mezalord Regeneration" ability enough times, making him powerful enough to No-Sell the Akumaizer 3's Magic Circle Attack.
  • Resurrective Immortality: No matter the injury, or even if his body parts are split, Mezalord can always revive.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: His end fate is becoming one these. The Akumaizer 3 use their New Light Attack to turn his resurrection power against him and turn him an immobile stone slab.
  • The Unfettered: There's no line he won't cross and no tactic too underhanded for him, whether it's using people's family members against them, harming children or setting up Sadistic Choices involving either of the former two.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Even when Akumaizer 3 goes Lighter and Softer, Mezalord stays as cruel as he always was, which is probably why he made fewer appearances in the second half than he did the first.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Was perfectly fine with killing Mitsuhiko, a little boy, in order to keep the secrets of the Akuma Clan from getting out.
  • You Killed My Father: When using the Akumaizer 3's loved ones against them doesn't work, Mezalord is prone to just kill them purely to spite them. Among those whose deaths he's responsible for are Xavitan's mother and childhood friend, Ippei and Mitsuhiko's mother, Darunia's older sister and Evil's girlfriend. The Akumaizer 3 SIC Hero Saga also reveals he was literally responsible for killing Xavitan's father (who he was formerly friends with).

    Iron Mask

Iron Mask

Voiced by: Shunji Yamada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iron_mask.jpg
A demon who assisted Mezalord in tracking down those who escaped from the Akuma Clan in episode 2.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: He has wholly black eyes and is a cruel captain of the Akuma Clan.
  • The Dragon: He seemed to be Mezalord's main enforcer, at least in episode 2.
  • I Have Your Wife: He and Mezalord opt to hold Xavitan's mother Chiyo hostage against him after he and the other Akumaizers keep interfering with their human hunts.
  • Killed to Uphold the Masquerade: All of his victims were escapees from the Akuma Clan that he executed so they wouldn't able to spill the Akuma Clan's secrets.

    Akanida and Aonida

Akanida and Aonida

Voiced by: Eisuke Yoda (Akanida), Takeshi Watabe (Aonida)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akanida_and_aonida_ep4.jpg
A pair of Oni brothers sent to build a tunnel from Downworld to the surface.
  • Cyber Cyclops: Akanida has only one eye.
  • Divide and Conquer: In episode 4 they attempt to divide up the Akumaizer 3 by making Xavitan and Gabra think that Evil had lied to them.
  • Mook Maker: Their plan in episode 3 was to kidnap a group of schoolchildren and turn them into Child Soldiers for the Akuma Clan.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: A literal case, though it's downplayed in terms of their personalities. However, Aonida seems to be slightly more strategically-minded than his brother, while Akanida is more ready to use force.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Akanida can revive after being killed if his bones are placed on a magic circle.

    Sairen

Sairen

Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sairen_ep5.jpg
A childhood friend of Xavitan who became an officer in the Akuma Clan.
  • Brown Note: His plan involved using a special device that emits a painful sound to wipe out all the humans in the Ginza province.
  • Evil Former Friend: While he was friends with Xavitan when the two were children, he became his enemy after being drafted into the Akuma Clan's military.
  • Minor Major Character: According to Xavitan himself, Sairen is the one who helped him find out more about humans, which is what led him to turn against the Akuma Clan and become a hero.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Ultimately refuses to fight his childhood friend, but is killed by Mezalord for his defiance.

    Majoruka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/majoruka_ep10.jpg
A higher-ranked Akuma officer who serves as the Arc Villain for episodes 9 and 10.
  • The Baroness: A domineering and icy Akuma commander.
  • Death Equals Redemption: As Mezalord planted circuits in her and Darunia's head that would kill the other sister if one of them did anything to defy him, the only way she could turn good is if she died, allowing her sister to defect and join Xavitan without having to worry about her.
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: Her whole reason for serving Mezalord is to save her little sister, Darunia.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: She's Darunia's older sister. Darunia wishes to keep this secret from the Akumaizer 3 out of a fear they'll hold back and be killed by her, but Xavitan was able to figure it out on his own.
  • Middle-Management Mook: She seems to be ranked higher than the average Akuma Clan captains, as shown by her having Bakenegon under her command.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Cannot do anything defy the Akuma Clan without the Twin Demon Circuit in her head causing pain to Darunia.
  • Wicked Witch: She's very clearly themed after a witch.

    Geberu

Geberu

Voiced by: Hiroshi Masuoka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/geberu_ep38.jpg
A division commander and the strongest warrior of the Akuma Clan.
  • The Brute: He's an incredibly tough warrior, and Gulver's go-to guy for when something needs to be thrashed. Especially after he gets the Immortal Shield, which lets him No-Sell almost any attack.
  • Elite Army: He has his own specialized platoon of Mooks with custom masks and armor.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: His "Immortal Shield" has three eyes on it.
  • Final Boss: After Mezalord is defeated, he becomes the villain of the final episode and the last opponent the Akumaizer 3 face in the series.
  • Hero Killer: Responsible for the deaths of three of the Demon Peace Party, leaving Noppelar Jr as the only one left alive. In the end, it takes the Akumaizer 3 sacrificing their lives to destroy him for good.
  • Last Villain Stand: Even though Mezalord is killed and the Akuma Clan is reformed, Geberu is still sent out by Gulver to make a final attempt to kill the Akumaizer 3.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His "Immortal Shield", which makes him practically invincible.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has a pair of red slanted eyes and is one of the most dangerous demons in the Akuma Clan.

    Gulver (spoilers)

Demon Emperor Gulver

Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/geberu_receiving_orders_from_gulver_ep37.jpg
The true leader of the Akuma Clan.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He's the real leader of the Akuma Clan and the master of Mezalord and Geberu. Because he stays behind the scenes, the Akumaizer 3 never reach him and one of his minions is the Final Boss instead.
  • Karma Houdini: While the Akuma Clan's invasion is thwarted and he loses his strongest warrior, Gulver himself gets off scot free at the end of the show.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He is the one behind the Akuma Clan's surface invasion, secretly giving orders to their military leaders all along.
  • Maou the Demon King: The Great Demon King to whom the entire Akuma Clan answers to, whether they know it or not.
  • Unseen Evil: Gives orders from behind a screen of glowing lights so his true appearance is not known. It isn't until towards the end of Choujin Bibyun that we get to see his true form.

    Aguma

Soldiers Aguma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aguma_ep3.jpg
Black jumpsuited demons in military coats who serve as soldiers of the Akuma Clan.
  • Elite Mook: Mezalord has a pair with bat shaped heads and light-blue capes who act as his Praetorian Guard.
  • Horned Humanoid: They have two stubby cone-shaped horns jutting out of either side of their heads.
  • Mooks: The main ground soldiers of the Akuma Clan.
  • Our Imps Are Different: They definitely resemble imps in both appearance and their role in the demon hierarchy, serving as grunts for higher-ranked demons.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They have big round red eyes and most certainly aren't heroes.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: While the Akuma captains they serve are usually serious, the Aguma are often prone to comedic moments.
