Wolfenstein, if it was directed by Seltzer and Friedberg

I admit, I put a lot of weight on a cool concept. I know that's generally a bad thing, but that's just how I am. For instance, I played through Turning Point Fall of Liberty several times despite it being an Obvious... PreAlpha simply because it had a really cool premise of the Nazis winning WW 2 and then invading America. I literally played through a crap game multiple times because I was intrigued by this premise. And seeing as how I also immensely enjoyed the Wolfenstein series for its Stupid Jetpack Hitler and Ghostapo inspired storylines and gameplay, I must say I was actually quite looking forward to this movie.

I hated it.

Yeah, the concept of a Nazi army invading from the moon was not enough to outweigh the absolute awfulness of this movie, and here's why. It's a parody movie. Now the concept of Nazis invading from the moon is an inherently comical idea, so I was expecting it'd be like a parody of those old pulp novels that feature Nazis in high tech blimps menacing a dashing hero, but no, it goes the Seltzer and Friedberg route of simply lampooning everything it can think of. We see an idiot President that's totally not Sarah Palin. This was released in 2012. Way to keep up with the times, movie. That's not even going into the fact that it basically calls all Republicans Nazis, which is stuff you see in stupid Youtube debates, not in movies attempting to have intelligent humor. And then there's pointless parody scenes like the one that parodies Der Untergang simply because of the Gag Sub phenomenon. It has nothing to do with the plot at all. The characters are also terrible. Everyone is either a Nazi (meaning we hate them by default), a Jar Jar Binks-like black guy, or a parody. Nobody is likeable, so you don't care about anyone at all. This is a Seltzer and Friedberg movie. It doesn't matter if it's a Finnish movie, the style, tone, and everything else about it is pretty much a Seltzer and Friedberg movie, and it's about as funny.

When I first saw the trailer, I wanted to see this movie because of its ludicrously awesome premise, but then I never heard anything about it anymore, and now I know why.

Frankly, the movie would've been better if they just made it a straight action/adventure movie. You wanna know what would be the result? Wolfenstein

What about Renate? Isn't the point that you're supposed to like her? She might start out as a villain but even in the beginning she's a sympathetic villain. And admittedly as a hero she doesn't manage to save everyone but she tries her best and she's set up as the leader who will rebuild the Moon colony for the better. I mean, I guess you might not like her anyway (it's very subjective and all), but I think she's at least build to be a sympathetic character and the moral focus.

(And I think it's unfair to call Washington "Jar Jar Binks-like". He's annoying, yes, but nowhere near as pointless and useless as Jar Jar.)

Can't complain about the rest of your review. I had a completely different opinion but it's all subjective so I can't really argue with any of that.

Although I do think calling it a Seltzer and Friedberg movie is misleading. I can see, easily, why people hate Iron Sky, but even if you do hate it, I think you have to admit that it was clearly made with feeling and commitment. If you want to insult it, compare it to something that tried really hard but failed (I wish I had an example but I can't think of anything), not something that didn't try at all and succeeded in making a lazy parody just to make money on current popular fads.

My own opinion is that it is a flawed film, yes, and the film makers were trying a too hard with the political satire part and the Message, but it's still fun and enjoyable. For me it's good enough for several re-watchings. It just works for me, despite its flaws. And for the record, I don't like Seltzer and Friedberg movies, I don't like their humour at all. But I liked the humour in Iron Sky. So whether you like it or not and whether it's good or not, I think it's obvious that it's at least different.

I really need to find some time away from editing and RL stuff and write my own review on this. Thank you for reminding me to do that.

As it stands, I will simply say that I loved practically every minute of it and consider it one of my favorite films of 2012 and in my Top 20 sci-fi films.

I think you missed the point of the film. Tremendously. This movie's sense of humor is nothing like Seltzer and Friedberg's, it has a smart message about the consequences of an extreme nationalist mindset. It is also not a parody, it's satire. Contrary to popular belief, these terms are not interchangeable; there's a difference, and it makes a difference. To be perfectly frank, you sound like a Republican that didn't like the movie because it grills Sarah Palin and Republican ideals in general. I don't think you're giving it a fair shake.

Also of note is the music. The theme song (also called "Iron Sky") that plays over the end credits is fantastic. I haven't seen too many people praise the music of this film. It goes above and beyond.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

I liked it all up to the last five minutes. I think that last bit is when it really fell apart. I didn\'t mind the shots fired at the republicans despite being one but I felt that last bit was too mean spirited by people who aren\'t really connected to the politics of the country. There\'s a reason why I don\'t make movies about Finnish politics besides the fact that I am not a director, and that\'s because I don\'t feel like I could do their politics right or respect any of their parties well enough to make good comedy.

I don\'t think Setzer and Friedberg is a good comparison. But I do think that last bit just fell flat to the point where it ruined the movie for me.

If it's true that wherever you go, there you are, maybe you need a better map.
