To Ano Baka Desu, can I suggest instead of making passive aggressive edit summaries and sending form P Ms that offer no actual information about what you disagree with and how you think it should change, that when you have an issue with a edit that's been made you open a thread about it on the discussion page, and provide your direct feedback about:

  • Which words you disagree with.
  • Why they have to be changed.
  • What you feel needs to be done to "fix" it.
  • An actual suggestion for how you would re-word the entry, or a request to eliminate it entirely.

That would be constructive, rather than backseat moderating (your name doesn't appear on any moderator/admin user list I can find), backseat grammar policing and threatening people with suspensions for not responding to your form PM's within your extremely narrow timeframes.

If you'd actually opened a dialogue my response would have been:

I'm a native English speaker and have been since before I could walk, I disagree that the edit in question is a bad one. I don't want to start an edit war and am fine with reverting the changes entirely if there is a consensus from other editors that they should be removed or changed.

Thank you.

The notifier messages are automated.

As for my response to your native English speaker claim, the entry you added clearly had awkward sentences that even an ESL wouldn't make sense of. And looking at your edits on other pages, there's a pattern of awkwardness that runs deeper than mere grammar misunderstanding.

It is also not up to other users to constantly pick up the slack you leave behind.

I could have worded it nicer, in which case I apologize. However, it doesn't change the fact that accumulating notifiers and not heeding them won't do you any favours; not when you did edit war fairly recently on Elden Ring.

I'm a little concerned about the use of Alternative Character Interpretation here. From all I've read throughout the hololive pages regarding him, and him posing with certain aspects of the talents' merch, at what point would he limit or has he limited the talents over a bit of fun? I mean, think about Botan's 3D debut - one of the biggest gags at his expense, and he was absolutely fine with it. Does Yagoo really strike you as the idol/entertainment agency CEO to be crotchety about his talents having fun while working?

I agree. And the whole discussion on YAGOO's CEO activities is bordering on Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment since it's about the more serious real life topics (management of a company in this case). I'd say we remove the whole entry.

A slight bit late asking (since I already added an entry related), is it okay to apply Alternate Character Interpretation to the HAACHAMA×Akaihaato storyline? It's not about any of the Virtual YouTubers themselves but moreso the characters Haato portrays in her Kudzu Plot.

Alternate Character Interpretation has had a track record as being one of the most rampantly misused tropes across the site. I wouldn't be surprised if a cleanup or outright axing of the trope occurs in the near future.

Feel free to cut that or anything with this trope that seems to go too much into controversial territory

Broken Base for Hololive CN? At least for the Japanese and Overseas fans? Evidence was found that most of the former CN girls (except Yogiri, as far as evidence goes, she's innocent) have been implicit or outright complicit in the Chinese harassment campaigns against Coco, Haato and the other Hololive girls.

Then link/post the Evidence. It's not necessarily that I don't believe you/it, but if one were going to claim something as bold as that, it is a MUST to provide the evidence directly within your entry. Otherwise, it easily sounds like projection or baseless conjecture.

i would love to see where this goes, since i've seen comments floating around You Tube saying stuff to similar effect.

edit: found this on the Virtual Youtubers subreddit - tl;dr at the very least, Artia and Rosalyn are pretty two-faced between English and Chinese social media, and Chinese antis are pretty amused that Westerners are trying so hard to defend people that don't actually like them back

there's also this guy who says that while some of the ibb.co document is true, a good chunk of it is random social media posts taken out of context, so believe what you want to believe i guess. he double checked the translation and is more of the opinion Artia was more like a real life example of "Well Done, Son" Guy to the CCP rather than any genuine malice against holoJP.

all of this is a Manipulative Editing and/or Lost in Translation shitshow so please, if any of you guys actually decide to use anything from those links, don't present it as fact.

I've seen it, though I find it hard to believe as these Chinese antis tend to believe deeply their own narratives despite reality, such as believing Fubuki would throw Coco under the bus.

i should also add that the same video was originally posted on /r/Hololive here but was unceremoniously deleted without a pinned message from a mod (apparently that's SOP there), leading people to suspect Artia's trying to bury this. she had mod status at the time (probably still does)

edit: i took this to the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment forum thread, because this just screams that, and i think whatever we come up with here is gonna be inherently biased.

i would've edited my last post for this, but i feel like this should be separate

apparently Chinese antis are posing as Taiwanese fans to sow so much drama that Westerners simply stop giving a shit about Coco and Haato

so yeah... more reason to not jump the gun on hololive CN business

(edit: apparently this so-called False Flag Operation is so blatantly obvious that basically all of /r/virtualyoutubers is either laughing at or ignoring this)

Someone recently tweaked the Americans Hate Tingle entry to include Civia specifically as one of the Hololive China members involved in the harassment campaign. Is this factual enough to be relevant, or does this still rely on dodgy evidence? The sited source is still the same post that drawn skepticism from others, so I question if it's even allowed to appear in this entry to begin with.

Sorry, this one is on me. Checked it again and just as I thought, she wasn't actually mentioned at all (only 2nd gen are). I will revert that block to remove the misinformation that I had put in.

EDIT(2022/05/18): So it turns out it wasn't misinformation after all, but the allegation back then was not backed with evidence. That changed as of last week when someone did a "Where are they now?" video for CN, but it is locked behind that person's membership. Galaxy Light lemme know if you need a capture of the relevant part.

Would Anya's second outfit rigging that looks like she's wearing a mask be considered Off-Model, or Special Effects Failure?

I mean, it's still kinda off putting sometimes from certain angles (if she's bowing a bit and shows the fore of her face AND the rest of her hair and top of the head).

Edit: just realized it was added under Uncanny Valley. Never mind then.

Can I add an entry to Crosses the Line Twice regarding Haachama's graduation from high school? (No! She hasn't stopped being a vtuber). The audience reaction clearly indicates that they thought Haachama was gonna stop vtubing after this video, only for her to tell them that she's graduating from highschool. Thing is, "graduation" is the only word that's used to describe "succeeding in a level of education and going into a higher one" AFAIK.

I didn't watch that specific stream so I don't know how it went but I recall the scheduling of the stream was indeed very vague (initially, she never specified "graduating from high school" in her thumbnail, description etc.). Knowing Haachama, I believe this confusion is all planned and thus qualify for a Crosses the Line Twice entry IMO (she has done similar bait-and-switch type streams like this in the past, but not quite as far as that).

Is there anything on this entry that can be improved?

  • One example that doesn't involve her insanity is her highschool graduation streamnote . What makes it not just a heartwarming moment but also crossing the line twice, stems from Aloe Mano's very serious harrassment-induced graduation several months priornote , making the entire fanbase wary of any time the word "graduation" pops up, paranoid of it about a talent leaving the company permanently. This understandably had her audience worried that said "graduation" would actually mean that Haachama is retiring, until she clarified that "graduation" means that she succeded in highschool, which means she can go back home to Japan.

The the whole Taiwan incident with Coco and Haachama, people are assuming that Manjuu/Yostar (companies founded in China, but currently operate more in Japan) would stop business because of it when their stance has never been nationalist.

The Chinese ver is SOL though as its publisher (not Yostar unlike most others) is on the nationalist side.

We don't actually have any Les Yay examples written on YMMV/Hololive at the moment. IMO, To justify having a Les Yay page, we would need at least enough examples to roughly fill up a computer screen. So feel free to start adding Les Yay entries to YMMV/Hololive, and once it gets big enough, we will make a Les Yay/Hololive page. But please read the bold text within the Ho Yay trope page to remind yourself what is and what isn't Les Yay beforehand.

The only way Yostar/Manjuu wouldn't collab with Hololive is if the government directly stepped in; and with past things it was out cry from zealots. They're not nationalist zealots, but rather fans of such things like their players.

That and they are no stranger to having the ire of Chinese nationalists due to how they seem to favor the japanese more over the chinese.

That being said the real question of this matter won't be reached for some time as they're currently trying to work out the Do A Extreme volleyball collab.

The issue with Memetic Mutation and the removal of entries:

So it has become apparent that a number of editors wish to add recurring memes/inside jokes associated with their favorite hololiver(s).

Now, @Freecom does have a point when he mentions that some of the entries added are not strictly Memetic Mutation by definition, so it wouldn't make sense to list them under it.

However, I think we shouldn't ban all meme write-ups just because their scope is limited to a single hololiver. Given how little English resources we have on the internet about the hololive fandom in general, I believe it is always a good thing to have more information written, as long as they AREN'T:

  • factually wrong [e.g. sentences like "Currently, ..." without mentioning a date & saying something is X without linking to a trustworthy source],
  • biased [e.g. sentences like "X is the most popular..." & "The best X is..." without explicit evidences],
  • mislabeled [e.g. This problem & Information on a Vtuber's real identify being placed until the Trivia page (not matter how much or convincing some events or findings seem to suggest they are X, it is NOT officially confirmed and thus not "Trivia")].

So I propose a solution: Create a "Memes" namespace.

That's right, a page dedicated to memes. And of course, as an example, I'm going to use YMMV/JoJosBizarreAdventure:

If we look at the JoJo's YMMV page, we can see that under the "See also:" section, there is a link named "Memes". Clicking on it will lend you to a Memes/JoJosBizarreAdventure page dedicated to Jojo memes. Now, we can see that most entries are Jojo-specific memes, as without watching / reading up about JoJo, there is no way you could have understood them (i.e. scoped within the show's fandom only). Therefore, we can conclude that memes of all kinds (as long as they are actually a meme, NOT a one/two time thing) are allowed in the "Memes" namespace.

In short, creating the " Memes/hololive " page would allow people to write up on whatever hololiver-specific running jokes memes (different things apparently)  they want - which can be very informative if you are new to the hololiver.

This page would have a folder for each hololive members, but unlike the Characters/hololive pages, we can just add new folders as we go along, because I'm pretty sure people won't be writing meme entries for ALL hololive members any time soon.

there's a reason why i put that forum thread there as a comment, the site mods apparently don't take too kindly to "memes" that aren't really memes and would be more considered a Running Gag type of deal. they regard fixing this as an uphill battle so i'm just doing my little bit to help. if you guys are going to go ahead with this, just keep that in mind.

Perhaps we can put a warning message that defines what exactly is a meme at the beginning of the to-be Memes/hololive page?

From my understanding, the differences between Running gags, Memes and Memetic Mutation are:

  • Running gag is simply just a joke that gets repeatedly used within the work (e.g. a Vtuber repeating using a joke but nobody in the chat really make variations on it).
  • Meme is an idea (not even necessarily used in the source material, i.e. Vtuber's channel) that is repeatedly told and deviated among the ordinary people (i.e. the important thing is that the viewers actively use and make variations on it).
  • Memetic Mutation is when a Meme is used and understood by even people who don't know a thing on the original source material.

So, if we look at the "rejected" entries:

  • "Cut the fourth wire." is definitely not a Meme (it's not even a running gag at that),
  • "X-Potatoes" sounded like a Meme (since it is apparently both repeatedly used and involves the viewers making variations on it), but NOT Memetic Mutation.

Right?

Edited by truesord24
truesord24 Since: Apr, 2014

I should also mention that if we go by this definition of Memetic Mutation they have in the forum thread linked by @Freecom (see below), then it can be interpreted as only "てぇてぇ" & "The "ahe ahe" challenge" are allowed, since they're the only one used by people who doesn't even know hololive.

"A popular phrase within a fandom may be a meme, but it is not a Memetic Mutation unless it grows beyond that fandom and becomes recognized outside of its original and specific context."

  • fandom being hololive.

It doesn't feel right to just remove (pretty much) everything we have written there. So the Memes namespace would be a safe space for them to survive on.
