As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openLists & sections
Hi I would like it if the website allowed its users to organize tropes into lists that you can name similar to You Tube's playlists. For example I want the ability to organize video game tropes into their own list or character design tropes into another with ability to make many more. Thanks for taking the time to read this and apologies if we have a feature like this already I am still learning to navigate this website.
openVisual editing
On Wikipedia and other wikis, when you edit a page, you can alternate between "Source editing" and "Visual editing", while on TV Tropes it's limited to source editing. I have no idea if our software can support visual editing, but if so, it would be a useful feature to have. For example, since we currently only have source editing, it can be a bit of a hassle to alphabetize examples since it's hard to keep track of all the entries and make sure you've alphabetized everything. Sure, you can click the preview button, but you have to constantly close and reopen the preview after every change you make, which uses up time for your edit lock.
closed "Report Page" button for TLP
Reposted from here (didn't know Wishlist was a thing before). We had a drive-by negative-effort TLP draft posted and it was bombed to oblivion within hours. It would be very useful to have a quick way to flag these kinds of things up to the moderators without having to go through the PM system.
openA fliter for Forum History
Exactly What It Says On The Tin. A filter to categorize your forum history, like searching only threads characterized as Yack Fest, or OTC, or TRS?
openFinding the YKTTW archive for old tropes
When you go to the discussion page of some trope, you can find either a YKTTW Archive, Archived Discussion, or both. However, this isn't the case for all tropes, such as Significant Sketchbook. Can there be a tool or a feature or whatever way to find the original and first draft for a trope, no matter how old, even if it's before the current discussion method was installed? Pretty please?
openSort pages by word/character count
Is there a feature that allows you to view pages by how many words or characters it has? It would be a good way to locate stub pages and clean them up.
openMake the image uploader remove spaces in filenames
As seen here, any avatar with a space in the middle shows up as broken and can't be selected or deleted, meaning anyone who wants to select or remove those images is SOL.
Having the image uploader remove spaces before uploading will completely remove that issue.
open[Search] Search specific sections of site/more advanced search options
Being able to restrict our searches to a specific section of the site, such as all tropes, all work pages, or specific forums. Not only would this reduce server load, by not forcing the site to search across everything, it would also help filter out irrelevant results. I don't need to see a long-term project thread when I'm searching for something in the video game forum, for example.
To that end, being able to restrict searches to title only, or text only would also be useful. I might just want to look for a forum thread by name (such as a video game general conversation thread), instead of finding every post that mentions those words, even inside of another thread. Not having to search the contents of every forum post would also be more performance-friendly.
openAdd A Ratings System For Reviews
I wish that reviews gave us the ability to rate the work in question, whether it be with lampshades, stars, faces, or really whatever. I'm honestly surprised we haven't done something like this sooner.
openAn Option To Change Our Account Names
Sometimes most Troopers can delete their old accounts if they made a mistake of using the username they don't intend. Can you like add an option to change our usernames in our profiles instead of deleting them? That way I can alter my username for the better.
openSomehow remove or limit linking to Twitter on the forums
I don't know if it is possible to actually block links to Twitter on the forums, but maybe there could be a rule about linking to a Twitter post like it's a source. Like, if they are linking to a post that's a link to an article they instead can only link to the article.
openAvatar Customization
This might be insane, but here me out:
What if, in addition to the traditional Avatar set up, Tropers also had the ability to customize their default profiles (the blank ones with the Lampshade hats) in a similar way to the Mii in Super Mario Maker 2 or the Snoo avatars on Reddit? Not only that, but the accessories themselves could be based on items from well known media. It would be awesome I tell you!
openAn Icon for Shocking Moments
I've seen icons for Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Nightmare Fuel, and Tearjerker, but not one for shocking moments. Could you please add an icon for that?
openGif support
I had this feeling that some trope pages don't have images because those tropes rely on something actually moving. This gave me the thought of this to happen because I think it should be a workaround for putting a video in the position of an image.
closed Disambiguated Trope Icon
With lots of tropes cut and disambiguated, there should be a given icon to indicate users more easily of a trope that's been dewicked.
Like how Trivia and YMMV tropes display a question mark and gas pump when used on a main page, one suitable icon would be an exclamation mark like this:
openAllow strikethrough on quotes
It would be helpful if strikethrough markup were permitted in quotes (using --> syntax), since there will frequently be strikethrough in the original source. The page quote for A Darker Path, for example, is meant to have strikethrough in multiple places, but can't.
openAbolish comment markup within a line (the "between two percent signs" feature)
It offers practically no benefit over the line comments (which are introduced by two percent signs with nothing in-between) and only the drawback of killing links that contain escaped nonstandard characters.
Please remove this syntax from the wiki (and forum) code and only support the line comments from here on.
Edit: Bugs entry for the percent-encoding bug.
Edited by MedinocopenIs it possible to make indentation clearer in edit history?
I accidently sent an indentation notifier because I missed a two bullets entry since new addition text in history page is clustered together.
It's the third time in months and I'm ashamed of myself. I will be more careful, of course, but visual aids in history page will be immensely helpful.
Edited by KuruniopenA way of keeping track on TLP drafts
Perhaps something like the Followed Threads list and/or the Followed Pages would make it easier to keep track of TLP drafts. When I'm at school, I have the tendency to miss responses until I check later on.
Edited by Cutegirl920fire
This is quite a wishlist for many who are writing a TLP draft if their formatting is right.
I'm not the only one who's wishing this.
