As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openA trope in the TLP can only be launched if it meets a certain bomb to hat ratio
So, you guys have made it so that only tropes with 5 more hats than bombs can be launched, which is a fine implementation.
But with the upcoming feature of requiring a reason for submitting a hat or a bomb, I would like for the amount of bombs compared to hats to change too.
Something always did tick me off that a TLP Draft with 20 bombs but 40 hats can technically be launched. That bomb-to-hat ratio really doesn't look good; it's basically 1:2.
So I'd like a rule that stipulates a trope can only be launched if there are 5 more hats an bombs AND if the bomb-to-hat ratio is less than a certain ratio, like "1:2" or something.
closed Provide tropers with a history of their image uploads
It's not covered in your edit history, and if the modal closes before the link's copied, it can be a real pain to find the image again.
I'm pretty sure we end up with a lot of double uploads when this happens.
(It's also one of those things that would help regular tropers to feel more engaged with the site)
In a perfect world, I'd also show a 'related' link for each image to show how many pages/threads use it.
Edited by Mrph1workingMore TLP Namespaces
Everytime I launch a Useful Notes draft, it always goes as Main/UsefulNotes[Topic]. I have discovered that when making a draft, the namespace is always in "Main" and the page type is always in "Trope". Nothing else.
My wishlist to have have more choices for namespaces and page types such as making a Useful Notes or an index or a disambiguation list. To be clear I'm not including work pages as they're a free launch.
Edited by alnair20aug93workingNumber the individual wicks on Related To pages
This seems like it should be a simple change that would make wick checking much, much easier. Simply generate the wick list as an ordered list. This makes it much easier to sample wicks based on a simple random number generator.
workingOpen all notes/labelnotes
Exactly what it says. A feature to open/close all notes and labelnotes.
closed Getting the works shared by two tropes.
Getting the works shared by two tropes, sorta the opposite of the Itty Bitty Wiki Tool of "Find the tropes shared by two works."
Use: Checking that super tropes aren't being used for the same example as a subtrope, where only the subtrope should be used.
Also for fun, like what's already on the page?
workingSearch your name within specific forum threads
Searching for your specific posts in a forum isn't easy to my knowledge. I think the ability to add "in:(thread number)" or even search your name / another name and a specific term would be helpful. IDK how possible this is to implement but Discord and Twitter and even Reddit have some examples.
workingGive us the ability to revoke hats/bombs without having to give the opposite
The only way to undo your vote of a bomb or hat is to vote in favor of the other option. A draft can start in an obviously terrible state, but when it becomes workable, I don't want to immediately say it's launchworthy. Admittedly this is sort of an artifact of the flanderization of this voting system, but it'd still be appreciated.
workingLast Online
Mods have a tool to check user's online activity, but wishing user profiles would have "Last online: " line in general, because sometimes a user needs to be called somewhere and it's unclear if they're still alive or haven't logged in in a year.
closed Forum post notifiers
This one's a suggestion for the forum system. One thing that happens a lot is that two people post in rapid succession, and one of them has to edit their post so that they can make it clear who they're replying too. TBH this is kind of tedious and I'd like for ther eto be some kind of notification when someone posts so that posters can avoid this kinda thing.
openHow tropers could more easily detect unwelcome entries about pages only existing to define a term.
Like with YMMV, Trivia and Flame Bait, make wicks of Definition-Only Pages be marked with an icon so that people can more easily spot an example made of these items when they are not supposed to have examples, such as The Hero which, as of writing this, still has some trope example-like entries. I think the icon should be black with a white cross because it looks cool for something as empty as black space. If the item is under both Flame Bait and D-O, then maybe the former can take priority, if I have to choose. Which one would you choose?
Edited by CarlFilip19workingBring back the "gift" function for badges
Way back when The Badge Shop was active, mods and users used to be able to gift badges to other users (this was the icon◊) but it somehow disappeared over the years. It will be nice to bring back so that mods can fill gift award badges to users
As for where the button should go... I believe it was next to the "add description" and "add badge to profile" options on badges you own in your badge collection. reference pic◊
Edited by MacronNotesworkingThread-specific search
Allow a forum search that's filtered for the current thread only. With some long-term threads running to hundreds of pages and tens of thousands of posts, being able to check for a previous mention of a topic/work/trope would be very useful.
openReview outdated bit
Trying to edit a review's subject (like here for me) has a message at the bottom that says "Use the ptitle, if it has one." This needs to be removed because ptitles don't exist anymore. Thank you in advance.
Edited by Piterpicherclosed Additional reason for Image Pickin: "copyright policy"
Went to bring up an image in Image Pickin (Standard Starship Scuffle FWIW) because it looked to be a single fan-art with no indication of permissions, and noticed there's nothing on the dropdown menu for violating the wiki copyright policy.
opendon't allow redirects in Main/ to be added to video examples
On video examples, have redirects in Main/ not show up in the dropdown list for secondary tropes. This would ensure that videos are added to the correct page for the trope. (e.g. VideoExamples.Toilet Humour and not VideoExamples.Toilet Humor)
(I specify "in Main/" because work page redirects have their use in video sourcing)
Edited by Twiddler
Whenever a TLP draft has five more hats than bombs (or 5 more bombs than hats), the ability to add more of whichever is of greater quantity should be disabled until more of the other is added. Easy way to completely kill dogpiling.
Edit: Now that I think about it, another change that could be made alongside this one is to make the hats/bombs bar show the net total of whichever there's more of rather than the absolute total of each. Doing it that way should give a better indication of how the draft's doing, and hopefully it's less likely to be inaccurately compared to social media feedback.
