The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
opendifferent evolutionary lines
Not sure if this example for West of Eden should go under Artistic License – Paleontology, Artistic License – Biology, or if there's another trope that fits better:
- Unlike the Tanu and Sasku, who are depicted as looking like at least Neanderthals, if not actual Homo sapiens, the Paramutan evolved from a different line of primates, and retain simian-like features such as short prehensile tails and thick, fur-like hair over much of their bodies, which suits them well in the frigid northlands.
openWeaponry Malfunction
Is there a trope for somebody getting killed by their weapon malfunctioning? I'm not talking about Hoist by His Own Petard; this is just faulty equipment that nobody can see coming or be blamed for (though it could probably be prevented by proper maintenance).
openManta Ship
A trope where a vehicle (typically a submarine, but can also be an air-/spaceship) resembles a manta ray instead of a more "common" design. Some of which can even be piloted like aircraft regardless of environment. Examples:
Edited by GofastmikeopenGet run over, get reincarnated
Do we have a trope for when a character is run over, usually by a truck of some sort, and this serves as their trigger to be reincarnated? I know this is a fairly common thing in anime, especially in the isekai theme.
openVenom can create clothes out of his body
I noticed the Venom article doesn't include the trope he is frequently shown to do, as in, being able to create clothes out his body alone. For example, the Simbiote suit gave Peter the disguise of a police officer in the animated series.
What trope would this be?
openNon-Alcoholic Stress Binging
Sorry I don't have links. Don't know how to make them on this site and also using phone.
I've seen a couple entries on the Drowning My Sorrows page where the sad person is doing something unadvisable that is not binge-drinking. Heartbreak and Ice Cream is also a gendered sub-trope, but it doesnt cover what I'm looking for.
I guess the question is whether we have or need a trope for a depressed person going off and indulging in other vices than drinking.
Like, say, a guy has sworn off arcade games because he wasted so much money on them. Then Baron Badguy gives him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown and he tries to take his mind off his feelings of powerlessness by spending a whole day in the arcade just showing $100 in quarters into various machines.
Or someone trying to take their mind off of their problems by buying ludicrous amounts of TCG card Packs
Or, more seriously, a guy who dieted and exercised to get fit for his girlfriend Falls Off the Wagon and orders a giant greasy comfort food meal at an all-night diner.
Even if this doesn't need it's own trope, I think it should be mentioned in the intro to Drowning Your Sorrows that it can cover any vice, not just drinking.
openHeroes with less-than-grand attitudes
Humble Hero says: "This isn't caused by low self-esteem nor by guilt."
So I want to know the trope for:
- A hero with low self esteem
- a hero who feels guilt over beating people or causing destruction
openFork in the Outlet
Character puts a piece of silverware (commonly a fork), into an electrical socket (sometimes a toaster or other electric device that's plugged in to the wall).
openOverprotective because of environment
A parent treats their child as an Overprotective Dad in a world where the child is very easily vulnerable to dangers. There are commonly monsters, natural disasters, or some other means of threatening the child that the parent has no choice but to be very cautious and protective of their child(ren).
tl;dr Overprotective Dad but justified.
openSplitPersonality, or?
I don't know if this would belong in Split Personality or not:
- Dad: It was implied for a while that Dad was a false personality with fake memories. "Dad Elucidated" confirms this when Andan takes over, regaining control of his body. He has Dad's memories, but is a completely different person, who acknowledges that he'd lost several years of his life trapped in the facility.
Basically, one personality wasn't even real, but one implanted within and forcibly kept dominant. When Andan broke out, the Dad personality vanished, as he was never real to begin with.
openBasic Decency Is Enough
Similar to Wants a Prize for Basic Decency, but here the character doesn't want or expect a reward for fulfilling the simplest social obligations. However, he refuses to fulfill anything above said basic obligations.
Edited by Chabal2openAll jewelry is magnetic
Specifically in animation, when they don’t want to fully animate the removal of an earring or pin, so the character ends up just pulling it off with one hand.
Bonus points if it’s given to someone else who immediately puts it on in the same manner.
openEnglish Caribbean
Works set on the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean, but where the ports, cities and ships that chase the pirates are all of English origin, barely, if at all, mentioning the Spanish empire. Even thought they controled 99% of those waters. Is there a trope for that?
openCloset full of identical items
A joke where a character opens a closet/wardrobe/drawer/etc. and reveals rows upon rows of identical copies of an item we've already seen and assumed to be unique. In its most common form, this is used as a form of Lampshade Hanging of a character's Limited Wardrobe, but I've also seen it used for things other than clothes e.g. in this scene of Spongebob: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCOaX_tV4dw
openVerbal Tic Imitation
Alice is talking to Bob, who has a Verbal Tic. The conversation ends on a threatening note, with Alice sarcastically using Bob's own Verbal Tic at him.
One Judge Dredd story has Dredd demand the cooperation of a Manic Game Show Host (who refers to everyone as "ducky") in order to lure a criminal into attacking a contestant.
openWhat is this?
I feel like this fits a trope, but I'm not sure which one:
- Dad: In "Dad Feels Good", one of the lyrics is "Time for Dad to bring the lightning", passing as a cool line and nothing more. Then, in "Dad Elucidated", Andan wakes up and leaves the facility. Cheryl panics about how he's going to "bring the lightning", now making it seem a lot more dramatic.
Poison from all sources can be cured by the same type of antidote.
