The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openGiving Up Prized Possession
A character willingly gives away one of their prized possessions as an act of selflessness, sometimes to give it to someone in a greater need than they are. Would be a supertrope to Gift of the Magi Plot, or at least the story itself involves this trope.
openYou wake up if you die in the dream
Where death is the way out of a dream (the opposite of Your Mind Makes It Real).
Examples: In Inception, dream divers wake up if they're killed in the dream. A character actually died because they believed they were still dreaming. Dream weavers in Bungo Stray Dogs and Kimetsu no Yaiba subvert this and pretend to have caught their victims in a dream, tricking them into committing real suicide.
Edited by MomochiopenTrope in which a person comes up with an intricate plan for seduction
Do we have a trope name for when a character tries to seduce someone using a plan of deception and manipulation in some way?
openSubtitles show character doesn't know the language
A character speaks in a language they don't really know, and they make a mistake that causes them to say something other than what they mean to say. e.g., a man trying to apologize in Spanish says "Estoy mucho embarazado" and the subtitles translate it as "I am much pregnant."
There are examples in King of the Hill, Monk (Zemenian), Star Trek: Enterprise (Denobulan). I either can't find the Recap pages or they don't exist.
My first search was Lost in Translation, which I thought would lead me to the right thing, but no luck there.
openIndirectly All Your Fault
A character complains that everyone's blaming him for a bad situation. But while everything going bad isn't directly his fault, it wouldn't have happened at all without him.
For example: Bob spends the week persuading the cast to go camping. This turns out to be a Horrible Camping Trip, but none of it through Bob's fault: the campsite assigns them a patch between stereotypically awful tourists, drunken hunters shoot the tent because they thought it was a bear, the weather which was supposed to be perfect turned into a two-day thunderstorm, a serial killer escaped from a lunatic asylum and takes the cast hostage, an actual bear shows up, etc. Bob points out that none of it was his fault (which is true), but the others point out that they wouldn't be there if it weren't for Bob persuading them to come camping, so they still consider him responsible for a waste of a weekend.
openInvincible Anti-Playtime Monster
As stated by Yurii from Angel Beats, there's a type of monster in video games that are, well, invincible to keep the players from playing forever. Is this an actual trope?
openCharacter innocuosly trying to make another leave
A character is thinking about doing something heinous or knows something serious is about to go down soon so they innocuously suggest to another, usually oblivious and innocent character, that they should not come near a certain place tomorrow or shoud go take a coffee break for a few minutes. They're trying to get the person to leave without seeming suspicious and so they wont be around to witness the bad stuff that's about to happen.
Edited by clockworkboyopenLudicrous Gibs but for mechanical parts
Is there a machine/robot/mechanical equivalent of Ludicrous Gibs?
openAlternate ending theme
A show uses a different ending theme for an episode, typically due to the episode’s overall tone being distinct.
openChildren's Uniform
The story takes place in a situation where most of the team has some form of uniform related to their position. Where the trope comes in is that if one of them happens to be a child, they will get their own uniform as well. Whether it's a customized variant made just for them, or simply a standard uniform tailored to their "stature", doesn't really matter, only that despite their age, they're still enough of an active member to get their own uniform.
Edited by GofastmikeopenUsing targeted group as henchmen
Is there a trope where the villain is persecuting a group, but uses one or more of them as henchmen? For example, McLeach in The Rescuers Down Under is a poacher whose sidekick is a lizard.
openChatty Dentist
Like Chatty Hairdresser, but with dentists. Especially the dentist who simply won't stop talking when the patient's mouth is full of medical devices and can only make vague agreeing sounds instead of actually answering.
openConquer just because
A king or other powerful character wants to conquer and expand their kingdom, just because. It's not because of a lack of resources, it's not out of pure evil or anything, the point is the reasoning doesn't actualy get questioned. They do it because it is what powerful people do.
The clearest example I remember is a morality story (about a real king I think) of a king and his advisor, something along the lines of:
King: I've conquered the kingdom to the north.
Advisor: What will you do next?
King: I shall conquer the kingdom to the south.
Advisor: And then?
King: I shall conquer the kingdom to the east.
Advisor: And then?
King: I shall conquer the kingdom to the west.
Advisor: And then?
King: And then I shall live well with my wealth and luxuries, and be content.
Advisor: But you can do that now.
Edited by minecrafttiktalikopenBlueprints-dropping future villain Film
Is there a trope for a geeky character who's carrying around a bunch of papers (of their own inventions and/or research), who drops them awkwardly, being humiliated by the boss? I noticed it happening with Cheetah in the new Wonder Woman movie, and the same thing happened with Electron in Amazing Spider Man 2, and Catwoman...
openNot prepared for daunting task ahead Anime
Trope for when someone is woefully unprepared for a daunting task they're forced to undertake.
openAmateur vs professional
A rivalry where one person is a professional and the other person is an amateur.
openFired From the Case
A lawyer is fired from a case, but they can't let it go. That lawyer goes on to find the crucial bit of evidence or legal precedent that wins the case.
There are examples from JAG and several civilian legal dramas. Something similar also happens on police procedurals.
I've done some searching but came up with interesting but unrelated tropes.
When the sky as an unusual color thanks to some supernatural reasons.
