Find a Trope:
openIs there something like Godwin's Law but with communism?
I've noticed a lot of far right people call anyone they don't like "communist" or "Marxist" or similar insults, which is just as cheap as calling anyone you don't like a "Nazi" in my book so is there a trope for it?
openoutlawing something that's impossible to do in the first place.
Is there a trope for when some government or (usually crazy) leader makes it illegal to do something that is impossible to do to begin with? Like if some real life government made it illegal to make a Perpetual Motion Machine or go faster than the speed of light.
openGoing rogue
A cop, who has been used as a cop for quite some time (so it isn't an Origin Story) steals some weapons and info from the force, goes rogue, and becomes a vigilante.
opencharacter who's a combination of snarky and nice
Pretty much Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Penny from the Big Bang Theory would be a good example.
openA two-word trope, First begins with a B and the Second with an M Western Animation
There's this Total Drama episode (Mutiny on the Soundstage) and I noted down a trope that's in it that I've now forgotten.
Edited by DragonJoe103openbiting is dishonorable
Is the a trope for how biting is considered dishonorable/uncivilized etc when humans are fighting? For example the infamous "bite fight" in Real Life
openInappropriate but justified reaction
Bob breaks some horrible news to Alice, and she responds by bursting out laughing. Bob is understandably confused, but Alice (and potentially the audience) know some extra information that means that the 'bad' news is actually good news. Also applies in reverse, where someone reacts to 'good' news with horror or dread.
openYoung doctor who's married to an older doctor
Hej guys, help me out here. I have been searching for hours now. I am trying to find a tv series where the main character is a women and it's set in medieval time. I have seen it on Netflix I believe, but I looked on Netflix history and couldn't find it. She's a young doctor who when her husband dies. She makes a deal with someone who will get her bodies she would then experiment on in pursuit of knowledge/science. I believe the village she and her husband came to is religious. Her husband thought her allot. She is always curious and asks her husband plenty of questions. Her husband is a rich man. Please let me know if anything rings a bell. This show is very important to me.
openmachines still work when unplugged in dreams
Is there a trope for this? Example: In the original Nightmare On Elm Street Nancy unplugs her phone when it won't stop ringing and throws it across the room.. only for it to keep ringing anyway. I've also had this happen in many real life dreams as well as similar things (in one, the headphones for my Ipod came unplugged but I could still hear music.) In fiction, it usually makes it obvious to the character they are dreaming, but in my dreams I don't realize anything's wrong.
openHe knows that one
Alice says something completely outlandish. Bob is completely surprised by it. She then clarifies that no, it was not really so (it was a joke, a figure of speech, a misleading term, etc). Bob then pretends that he was aware of it, to avoid the embarrasment.
For example:
- Alice: And how am I supposed to pass through all the guards? Should I activate my invisibility powers and just walk?
- Bob: Wow! You have invisibility powers?? That's amazing!
- Alice: No, dumbass, invisibility is just science fiction stuff. Nobody can become invisible in the real world.
- Bob: Yes, I knew that...
openDisparaging view of mysticism
Basically, it's a scientific-minded person who, unlike most people of their kind, acknowledges that magic exists. It's just that they dismiss it as a relic in the face of science and technology.
openMinor crime to save from major crime
For example: someone set a bomb in a building, a character finds this out, and so they set off a small fire to activate the fire alarm and get everyone out the building while they deal with the bomb.
openOffspring Sexuality Squick
Like Parental Sexuality Squick, but for parents not wanting to think about their children's sex lives. And a similar situation where a character doesn't want to think about the sex lives of people they last knew as children (for example, someone they used to babysit).
Often translates to Overprotective Dad.
openAn item of a character's gets caught on another item.
This happens to me a lot IRL, like my headphones getting caught on a doorknob or a backpack keychain getting caught under a desk.
openSkeptical authority figure has a point Film
This trope is usually found in monster movies but I assume it can appear else where. Most such movies have some scene where the hero comes to an authority figure with some evidence of the monster, only for said figure to just blow them off (Jaws being probably the best known example). However, If the movie isn't written very well the unbeliever may seem completely justified due to the heroe's "evidence" being very weak to non existent. Example in octopus 2 River Of Fear there is a giant octopus near New York eating people. The hero (who is a cop) tells his boss about it and his boss basically says he's an idiot. However, the only evidence he has is the report of a drunk and possibly crazy homeless guy, as well as a destroyed boat which could have occurred due to any number of reasons not involving a giant octopus.
Edited by BootlebatopenCharacter wants exotic pet for Christmas/birthday/etc?
The song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" is a classic example.
openCharacter differs from cultural norms?
Is there a trope in which a character (not necesarily the protagonist) sticks out from the people where they live? it could be due to their beliefs or personality and could be segregated due to this.
I'm still working on the Hybrid X Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia page and need clarification on the The Mirror Shows Your True Self trope.
According to the description, it seems to be strictly about mirrors only, but I've seen variants where magic caves and astral projection also reveal the true self. Hybrid x Heart's take on it uses the "Love Room" (their version of a holodeck) to reveal each girl's inner kink.
So my question is: Does The Mirror Shows Your True Self allow for such variations, or is there another trope like it that does?
