Find a Trope:
openPlayer mook expeditions Videogame
do we have a trope that describes "expedition" systems where you send out your Player Mooks, PlayerCharacters, etc. for a fixed time period to get loot?
Edited by Freecomopen(YMMV) Fans all (almost all of them) agree that this is one of the worst episodes of the show
Fans may disagree on certain aspects of the show, it can be the characters, the actors/art-style, animation etc. But when it comes to That episode, almost everyone universally agrees that it's a disgrace to the series. It may have characters being to O.O.C., it may have a plot line that doesn't make sense, it may contain content that may just be an extreme case of Crosses the Line Twice, or simply because of it's visual cringe (too gory, too much blood, puke everywhere etc.)
This could also be applied to videogames regarding different entries in the series or one game that follows a lineal-story of chapters.
For example "Stanley's Cup", an episode of South Park is considered to be one of the worst episodes of the show by fans, even creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone regard it as a terrible episode.
openReveal Shot or something else?
I was considering adding the following to Reveal Shot, but I'm not sure if it's that or something else. The relevant part is in bold:
- On Drive, Wendy is tasked with removing Ivy from her team and given a gun for the job. She sidelines Ivy's team by shooting out one of the tires on their Land Rover and then tries to shoot Ivy herself. However, Ivy takes the gun from her when she hesitates. When Wendy reveals that she's in the race to escape from her abusive husband, Ivy decides to abandon her team and join Wendy instead. After they get into Wendy's minivan together, Wendy tells Ivy "I think that maybe I should have shot you. We then see that Ivy shot out the other tires on the Land Rover as a parting gift.
openMemetic Scapegoat
Is there a trope for when the fandom blames a certain character for either major bad events in the story (i.e. Everyone blaming Star-Lord for letting Thanos win in Avengers: Infinity War) or just blames them for things that had nothing to do with them? This can happen regardless of whether the character actually is responsible or only tangentially responsible.
Edited by ClownPrince47openHated by everyone episode
A character does something bad and is hated by everyone throughout the episode
openRobots Eat Junk
Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Robots don't need to eat or even can eat, yet for some reason, they're almost always able to eat whatever random junk they can find such as nuts and bolts.
openVictim Has A Point
In an episode of The Sopranos, main character Christopher and his friend Brendon rob one of Uncle Junior's Comley trucks at night. The truck driver naturally lets them take the truck not before requesting them to either tie him or leave him a bit scathed. His reasoning is that he doesn't want his boss to automatically assume he was secretly in on the robbery from the start and being "scathed" would show he tried to protect the boss's interests. Christopher and Brendon then appeases the truck driver, leaving him "scathed"
openGods are just powerful magic users (and vice-versa)
Like Clarke's 3rd Law, but "any sufficiently powerful magic user is indistinguishable from a god." Or gods use the same magic system as mortals, they're just really good at it.
The Magicians (books and show) feature this and I think I've seen it in a few tabletop RP Gs and other fantasy series, but I can't remember any specific examples right now.
Edited by milodevenusopenEqually Wrong Correction
Alice says something wrong. Bob points out that it's wrong, but what he says is the "right" answer is equally wrong.
- Alice: Abraham Lincoln was... I think he was a ship captain or something?Bob: A ship captain? Really? You don't even recognize the man who invented the telephone?
openAscended Theory
A writer of a popular book series has noticed a lot of think-pieces written about his books, some ranging from queer theory, marxist theory, allegories about current wars. Fascinated by these analyses, he decides to allude to them in future works.
openPerson or object being trampled by multiple things or crowds?
I completely forgot the name but it's like an object or person gets trampled underfoot not by a singular object but by a massive group of people or animals with the last thing being like a mouse or an old person on a wheelchair or walker.
openPragmatic diversity (trivia trope maybe)
Its essentially having a diverse or mostly minority cast that exists soley for a non-political reason. Either the creator is a minority themselves and is writing what they know because its easier, or their specific race/gender/sexuality serves a non-aesop narrative purpose (like if they're adapting a game where you choose your gender and make the PC genderqueer as a form of Cipher Scything). I dunno how else it manifests, but you get the idea about the apolitcal nature.
Edited by DrunkenRockLeeresolved Your enemy is also my enemy
Villain sides with the heroes for pragmatic reasons, not Heel-Face Turn
openKing Of The Ant Hill
Character who stays with those weaker than they are, for they want to feel strong.
Edited by AndermannopenWhat's the trope where someone undersells a size, speed or magnitude?
this Jay Foreman video has an excellent example of the trope in action, where he states that the planned Thames Estuary Airport is gonna cost more than £100 000
Edited by MABfan11openNo Headshots Videogame
Character takes a headshot and it does the same damage anywhere else (usually how Video Game health bars work).
openArt imitates photo
There is a very well known photo related to a real-life event. A fictional work includes part of that real-life event in the plot, so there's a scene that is made to look similar to that famous photo. Do photographs count as art for Art Imitates Art?
openNo gridlock in a car chase
What's the trope for when a car chase scene has no traffic, or it's only just thick enough that the chaser and chased can show off their Badass Driver skills rather than having everyone immediately get caught in the bumper to bumper traffic that a big city should be having?
Starter Villain sub-trope where the first villain/antagonist the character faces remains an important character and force in said character's life. Dio Brando is a famous example; begins as Jonathan's rival and spiteful adoptive brother the moment he shows up in his life, and becomes the Big Bad of Phantom Blood, Stardust Crusaders and the Greater-Scope Villain of Stone Ocean
