Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Do we still have the page's history, by the way?
The mods probably do, and there's a semi-recent archive of the page here.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I think it should stay cut, in part due to there being no definitive "Let's Play reviewer" to cite. It just seemed flame-baity, even for the standards of SBIH.
Rock'n'roll never dies!Honestly, I don't really mind that it was cut, but I'm mystified that the cut actually went through. The process of approving or disapproving cuts has been too opaque for the entire time I've been on this site, which is almost a decade now - considering how many other problems have improved, I dunno why this is still an issue.
This sounds similar to the reason Horrible.Web Original was cut. Most types of web content attract drama importation and the ensuing edit wars; was the same true for Horrible.Lets Play?
Nonetheless, I think it should go to the Permanent Red Link Club if the decision to cut is upheld.
I'm back!^ That page did attract drama at one point; one of the people whose work was listed on the page tried to remove his entry. But as the ATT notes, the entry was also written in a very snarky manner, even by SBIH standards.
Personally, I hated the way the Let's Play page was written - not only is it hard to determine the "standards" of a Let's Play, or what qualifies as part of a series, but some entries had really weird writing like accusing one player of having "severe Girl-on-the-Internet syndrome" as if that means absolutely anything. Plus a lot of examples were obviously not attempting something of professional standards.
So like, I personally don't mind the page being cut, but we should know who cut it, and why they decided that was a decision worth making without consulting the thread first, since they knew the thread existed.
Edited by mightymewtron I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I agree it's probably best left cut; but I also agree it should've been discussed beforehand.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIf you must know, I was the one who took it to the cutlist. I apologize if I didn't think to discuss it with SBIH cleanup first, I thought the comments I cited were discussion enough.
Generally you should discuss with others before cutting a page, as some people may disagree with cutting a page and consensus is generally needed for cutting. If ever you feel a page should be cut in the future, bring it to an appropriate thread and discuss there.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallGranted, it's not a hard-and-fast rule; long-abandoned stub-pages and the like can probably be safely cut for violating standards, for example. But in general, pages like this should be discussed first.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessYeah War Jay 77 is right, some pages don't need to be discussed. But big pages probably should be discussed first before cutting.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallThank you, Furian. While the comments both on that cleanup and on this thread point to the page probably staying cut, you should have confirmed it with us first, since you cited comments from a while ago and there were people in the thread who didn't agree with those comments. I don't want other Horrible pages, or any pages, to be cut without clear consensus. But I appreciate your apology and I'm not mad, especially since you had good intentions.
More than anything, I echo nrjxll's sentiments - I'm baffled that this cut went through no questions asked.
Edited by mightymewtron I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Yeah I agree with nrjxll and mightymewtron on this as well-this shouldn't have just been cut with no discussion. I don't know how things like this can be prevented in the future, but something should be done to prevent large article cuts with no discussion from happening.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallSpeaking of pages getting cut with no questions asked, there was an instance where the mods cut the troper page for someone who wasn't bounced.
Edited by Kevjro7I brought it up on the new Appeal To The Mods thread recently if ya'll want to discuss there. It was more a post about these things seeming generally arbitrary and too accepting, but the issue of cuts getting through with no good reason is also discussed.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness^^^ I'll be fair towards the mods and assume they thought it was okay to cut because there was cited discussion from the thread in favor of the page being cut. They probably weren't aware that the discussion hadn't reached consensus, and that it was not recent discussion.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I would like to make an argument for reinstatement. Many pages at this site are used to better understand tropes. (It's the reason we can't have Zero Context Examples.) The Horrible.Lets Play subpage could be used for similarly educational purposes. As I recall, many of the entries listed what made those Let's Plays so horrible. Someone planning to do a Let's Play could look over the list and learn what not to do and why. Believe me, I've seen ones with similar mistakes listed. They were irritating.
^ Take that argument to the cleanup thread.
That's also not why we have Horrible pages. If we want an educational page, we can make SoYouWantTo.Do A Lets Play or something. Also, the page wasn't so much criticizing common LP mistakes so much as mocking people for being bad at the games or for antics not entirely related to the games, like having a bad lisp.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I've restored Horrible.Lets Play for now.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
Horrible.Lets Play was just cutlisted with this reason: "Tropers have expressed concern at SBIH Cleanup about the Let's Play subpage, as shown here, here, here, and here. I think it would also be a good idea to add it to the Permanent Red Link Club."
However, we never actually came to a consensus on cutting the Let's Play page, and we never agreed to put it on the PRLC. You can even see on the linked comments that some people replied disagreeing to cut the entire page. While we could have agreed to cut the page after further discussion, this action was taken without consulting with the cleanup thread first (as we haven't discussed the page in a while). We're concerned in the cleanup thread that this may set a bad precedent for cutting pages without approval, but we don't know who was responsible for cutting it, so we decided to take it to Ask The Tropers to discuss it further. I'm not sure if we want to revive the page yet, though.
