Rambling Old Man Monologue

Eh, not quite. That would probably be a subtrope, as the specific examples I'm thinking of have nothing to do with age: just people who are horrible communicators and can't make a point to save their life. Such as:

  • In The Mirror, Curtis goes on long, strange sermons that don't make a whole lot of sense. A lot of what he says in these monologues is just free-associating nonsense that sounds mystical, but he's not really making a point in any of them.

  • The Weather: In an interview about AB's tech, the technician has a long, repetitive, and vague monologue that never really gets to a point. He just rambles on about "the community" and "riding down a hill" without really giving any information. To top it off, the editing is so jumpy that he just ends up cutting himself off, and he stammers and pauses regardless.

Interestingly, both characters are played by Robby Rackleff, who is middle-aged at worst.

I don't think there's a specific trope for just rambling. The closest you'll get might be either Cryptically Unhelpful Answer or Magi Babble, which seems to cover the first example (the part about sounding like mystical nonsense).

The second one is essentially a Non-Answer.

Edited by MiinU I wouldn't mind failure so much, if I didn't fail so much.

Is the idea here that the character sounds like they're saying something intelligent or "deep", but if you think about it for long enough you realize it's nonsense?

^^ Thanks, those'll work.

^ Kind of? It would also in theory apply to speeches/monologues/etc that aren't even pretending to be deep, just written to show the speaker is terrible at communicating.

Hmm, well if it's the first scenario, it'd be Meaningless Meaningful Words.

And Ice-Cream Koan

And btw, I thought I came across a "stream of consciousness speech" TLP draft before.

The Bore or Cloud Cuckoo Lander (depending on whether the speech is mostly boring or crazy) for a character who does it.
