Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

In all fairness, George Orwell himself was far from a Nazi—I believe Orwell (the author of Nineteen Eighty-Four, which IIRC was based on Nazi Germany, and Animal Farm) was actually a leftist. Though I could see how this quote could be (mis)interpreted as pro-Nazi, so IDK, I'll leave it to consensus.
I definitely think Jerkass Woobie is the wrong trope for this though.
Edited by themayorofsimpleton TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallOrwell was definitely a leftist, and he fought against Hitler's fascist allies in the Spanish civil war, so he's about as far from a Hitler apologist as you can get.
I'm not sure about the quote, but it may be from something he wrote before WWII, when Hitler was not necessarily seen as a mass-murdering monster but as one extremist politician among many. And he's describing Hitler's public image (back in those days) rather than the man himself.
But, to say the least, the quote has not aged well, and by the ROCEJ I don't think it should be listed.
Edited by GnomeTitanJerkass Woobie as a whole is NRLEP, right? So shouldn't any quote relating to a real life person be axed, no matter how sympathetic they are?
I've been noticing several NRLEP tropes have been using the quotes pages to sneak RL examples in when they'd otherwise be banned, for instance Quotes.Mrs Robinson. This isn't allowed, right?
Koichi really steals? No dignity.^ It probably should be axed, yeah. One of the quotes is about Satan, and is much closer to (literal) Sympathy for the Devil.
Edited by UFOYeah^^Yes, that's correct, Jerkass Woobie is NRLEP. So all real-life examples should be nuked.
^^^^^If memory serves, those books were inspired by Orwell's disdain of Stalinism, which he saw as a distortion of his own democratic socialist views. But back to the original point, yeah I agree with removing the real-life quotes.
Be kind.^At least Animal Farm is a direct allegory of the Soviet Union's descent into tyranny - how the ideals of the revolution were corrupted and so on. (You can of course argue that the Bolsheviks were tyrants from day 1, but I don't think Orwell saw it that way).
Edited by GnomeTitanYeah, if something is NRLEP, that should mean NRLEP anywhere. Snuck into a Quotes page or another sub-page is still against he spirit of it.
^^^ I knew Animal Farm was based on the Soviets (it’s one of my favorite books) but I didn’t realize 1984 was primarily inspired by it.
Anyway I agree, cut the quote for being a NRLEP violation.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallFor the record, the quote came from a review of Mein Kampf that was published in March 1940.
More nope nope nope to to nope pile. I am being humurous but I really dont want that quote anywhere near the trope pages.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Guys, it was already cut.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessYeah, it was cut five days ago. Not sure why people are trying to comment on it now.
Can we lock this as resolved?

When I came across this quotes page today, I saw one particular quote and thought "This...can't be right. Even if it was on record that somebody said it, surely this is going too far". And because it's a YMMV trope from a person in real life about another, that isn't helping. The trope in question? Jerkass Woobie, a trope regarding a jerkass or villain whom people still feel sorry for because of various reasons. The person the quote is about? Him. No, seriously.
