As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openIcon for Character Tropes
We have icons for tropes marked as Trivia and YMMV to help tropers move tropes examples to the correct category when they appear in the wrong namespace (like a YMMV trope appearing on the main work page), however, we still have difficulty with users recognizing characterization tropes, as evident by the Are these Character tropes? thread. I think having an icon for these types of tropes, or a banner or maybe a subtype category (like Trope -> Character Trope) would help tropers be able to sort without having to go to a thread and wait for a response (if they get one).
Not only that, but having this handy distinction would make it easier to clean up character pages of non-character tropes, which artificially bloats them and has resulted in character specific pages getting cut and needing to be remerged back to the main characters page once the non-character tropes are removed.
openPersist Links (YMMV, Trivia, Characters, etc.) on a Work's Sub-Pages
On a work page, there is a helpful list of links available at the top of the page to go to related pages for that work (YMMV, Trivia, Characters, etc.). However, when that page needs to be split into subpages due to the number of tropes (Ex. Work - Tropes A-C, Work - Tropes D-F, etc.), those links are no longer present. This makes navigation annoying (for example, when a trope is made YMMV via TRS and you're going to move it). It would be helpful if those links could persist in the subpages of that work.
Edited by BeerBaronclosed Page Colors
Noticing that some complaints amount to the coloring. But most of them just consist of "the coloring is bad". Therefor, I have compiled a more specific chart of what should be done.
- Normal Pages:
- Grey headers: Make them blue. This is TV Tropes. Our primary color is blue.
- Negative Space: Make it light blue.
- Footer: Make it blue.
- YMMV Pages:
- Top Header: Make it dark blue. Make green button grey.
- Orange Headers: Make them dark blue as well. Make green button orange.
- Space Around Text: Make it grey.
- Negative Space: Make it a dark grey.
- Footer: Make it dark blue.
- Links: Make them orange when highlighted.
- Sub-page tabs: Make the outlines orange and the words dark blue.
- Sugar Wiki:
- Top Header: Make it bluish green. Replace bluish green button with yellow.
- Bluish Green Headers: Make the pink button yellow.
- Negative Space: Make it pink.
- Links: Make them bluish green.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- Top Header: Make it red. Make red button black.
- Space Around Text: Make it grey.
- Negative Space: Make it black.
closed Report button for AskTropers
we need a report button for Ask The Tropers like the forums has
closed Link colors
Recently, Disambiguation pages got their own link color. This is very useful for finding and fixing them on work and trope pages... so can we please have something similar for redirects and index pages, for the same purpose?
Until next time...

openMake the buttons adding emoji to a forum post, not move the cursor to the post's end?
Makes it slightly difficult to repeat an image.
closedSegregate Archive pages from other wicks on Related pages
Currently on Related pages, archives are mixed in with the other wicks. Since archives are not to be edited at all, it would be helpful to move those links to either the top or bottom of the list and visibly separate them from the other wicks, either in a box or with a banner or divider of some sort.
closedSet wicks for indexes and disambiguation pages to be a different color
Something that might be helpful for cleanup purposes is if pages with the types "index" and "disambiguation" could have their links show up in different colors than blue, red, or amber. See this TW thread for reference.
openAbility to thump ATT comments
Forum discussion has highlighted that mods can't thump ATT responses - which means that some conversations are preferred on forum threads in case they get heated, rather than in their more natural home on ATT. It'd be great if this gap was closed and they could simply thump them.
openForum posts and threads that you create immediately count as read to you
I cannot count the amount of times I have created either of the above, went back to the main forum page, saw blue text, think "Oh! Someone's responded!", and clicked on my own thread/reply like I have short term memory loss.
Edited by badtothebaritoneclosed Profile request
I believe that it would be incredibly convenient if your profile included a link to your troper page.
openMake TLP Timestamps More Obvious
A lot of people will respond to ancient threads as though they're brand new (i.e., trying to talk to long-gone sponsors or complaining about the formatting). I'd like it if the timestamps were more prominent so that people wouldn't assume every thread is new.
openAPI calls
Wish there was an option to get specific outputs from URL. Meaning having some pages have no HTML. The last paragraph of Itty Bitty Wiki Tools as well as Show Source (?action=source) kinda already do that.
Suggestions:
- Get wikiwords by namespace and pagetype as a list.
- Get Related pages as a list.
- Get page's edit history as JSON of "user - timedate - link".
- Get user's Recent Edits as a JSON.
- Get current pages in Cut List as a list.
- Get work's reviews as a JSON list.
- Sort pages by size.
closed Make disambiguation pages show up as redlinks
Fairly simple suggestion. Pages in the Ambiguity Index should show up as redlinks even though they technically exist (like with This Troper and some other pages), to discourage linking to them.
Edited by RamenChefopenEditing tips
Is there, or could there in the future be, some process for tropers to suggest new additions to the editing tips? There are only so many programmed into the site and there may be scope to add more from the community hivemind. For example, I would suggest that if you're migrating stuff from one page to another (e.g. The Empire Strikes Back-specific stuff being moved from the general Star Wars page to that movie's specific page) then you strip initial/intro comments referring to the movie's title (no need to say "In TESB why does...?" when the fact that you're on the movie's page means everyone knows its title; change it to "Why does...?") or some other stuff which doesn't need to be said on a specific work's page. People who forget to strip those intro comments might, in a negative light, be thought of lazy. It would be nice to see the wiki remind editors of newer considerations like this, again according to reasonable suggestions from the tropers.
Edited by FlashStepsopenNew Listing Reason in Image Pickin'
Recently, it was decided that moments pages (Funny, Nightmare Fuel, etc.) should only have one image per page because of subjectivity and quality/illustrative issues. Moments pages going through IP to decide on one image to use currently have to use the default “Needs help” reason, since there’s nothing more specific to describe what’s wrong with those images. I suggest creating a new listing reason called “Multiple Images” so threads created about more than one image on Moments pages can have their subject matter be more obvious at a glance.

Because cut pages can't have discussions.
