Never heard of it, sorry.

But anyway! Are you a fan of indie cartoons? Are you a creative who wants to throw themselves out into the world of cartoon-making, but are worried that fat-headed bigwigs will only give your magnum opus a measly single season?

Shorts.tv will be doing its usual theatrical release of the Oscar shorts nominees on February 17th. I go see the animated ones every year. They also include some runners-up to fill the program out to about 90 minutes.

The site has descriptions of the shorts and some clips.

So I remember partly watching an episode of the original GI Joe where either Scarlett or Lady Jaye impersonates the Baroness after the Joes managed to capture her somehow....no wait, after it seemed like she'd died I think, and they replaced her with one of them to find some info on a new Cobra weapon.

But I don't remember the name of the episode at all. Anybody recall this one?

[up][up] It wouldn't surprise me if there was such an episode, but I don't remember it myself. Baroness impersonates Lady Jaye in the episode "Lasers in the Night," though.

I remember a bit more. They'd cornered her, and she chose to jump into the ocean, seemingly to her death from the Joes point of view.

Speaking of indie cartoons, I found a video from Glitch that goes into a lot of the recent problems facing western animation. In particular, they bring up the severe lack of animation for teen and young adults and that they intend help remedy that.

With the Oscars debuting tonight, I thought it would be appropriate to share Eddache's recent 19-minute video discussing the Academy's treatment of the medium of animation. He gradually breakdowns the history of the Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short Film categories, along with the nomination and voting processes generally involved.

  • 0:00 - Intro
  • 1:02 - Submission
  • 2:53 - Nomination
  • 6:34 - Voting
  • 14:28 - Short Film

     Notations
  • 0:00 - Intro
  • 1:02 - Submission
    • 1:15: Addresses the status of Roger Rabbit Effect films. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021) qualified this year due to proving it was 75% animated. A "no motion capture" rule in 2010 barred such films from the category, hence answering the "Where's Avatar?" Happy Feet got lucky by predating the standard.
    • 2:10: Rotoscoping was initially barred ("could be mistaken for live-action") until Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood managed to get a reverse decision to qualify for a nom. It still didn't get it, raising questions on this restriction due to the medium's history of using live-action references.
  • 2:53 - Nomination
    • 2:56 - 17 field-based branches (plus Members at Large and The Representatives) of the Academy (Actors, Production Design, etc) nominate their own field's nominees, but all can nominate Best Picture.
      • 3:28:For animation: a minimum number of screen creds, having been nominated before, or a vague "unique distinction or contribution". Alternatively, only four live-action screen credits.
    • 4:34: While an Animation Feature committee exists, the aforementioned "Members at Large" can also contribute in unknown quantities. Animation historian Charles Soloman points out how this open entry from "Members at Large" leads to " familiar nominees that would appeal to their children".
  • 6:34 - Voting
    • A point made about how vague the award is regarding what merits it's praising. One anonymous voter in 2015 admitted that if it were purely about awarding the actual animation, he would've voted for The Box Trolls stop-motion, but felt Big Hero 6 was an overall good animated feature.
    • 7:21: This leads to the discussion and criticism surrounding why animated films aren't in "Best Picture" more often, and the "Best Animated Feature" award being a convenient consolation prize. WALL•E was so notably snubbed from the category (but winning "Best Animated Feature"), leading to the expansion of "Best Picture" nominees from 5 to 10. The still-born "Best Popular Film" category is reminiscent of this tactic but failed.
    • 9:18: While Members are discouraged from voting in categories they have no expertise or interest in (such as not watching all nominees), it evidently hasn't stopped them based on various anonymous accounts. This still carries the same weight as dedicated voters. Only "Short Form" awards require strict completion to vote.
      • Therefore, voters for Best Picture and Best Animated Feature specifically don't have to watch all of them. "Best Picture" uses a ranked voting system based on preference, which can at least eventually remove weaker voters; "Best Animated Feature" doesn't have this benefit, and it's the only award treated like a popularity contest.
    • 11:54: More anonymous voter anecdotes with funny voices. One particular curmudgeon thankfully abstained.
    • 12:34: Conclusively, the stigma that it's the "Best Children's Movie", if you will.
  • 14:28 - Short Film
    • Being one of the oldest awards that used to be a shoe-in for Disney, it slowly became more varied over time in nominees and winners. Mainstream, indie, domestic, international, etc. Once again, only voters who have viewed all 15 nominations can qualify. Notably, Disney nor Pixar have a spot this year.
    • 16:10: The Academy attempted to cut the award from the live broadcast, among others, in 2022 for "runtime reasons", but it was reversed. However, this meant that Alberto Migelo's powerful speech about animation's legitimacy was only pre-recorded.

As I mentioned in the Oscars thread, I thought that short was the weakest. "My Year of Dicks" and "An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It" were much better.

Illumination just released the trailer (starts around 1:00) to their upcoming film, Migration, debuting on December 23. Notably, the film is directed by French director Benjamin Renner (Ernest And Celestine), and an art direction combining stylized duck designs against naturalistic lighting and settings.

Directed by Benjamin Renner from a screenplay by Mike White, “Migration” follows a family of ducks living in New England who try to convince their over-protective father to go on a vacation of a lifetime in the Bahamas.

The teaser doesn't do anything for me, but if Benjamin Renner is directing, I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Could a Mighty Mouse revival work? There hasnt been any real new material since the Bakshi show, but stranger things have happened (look how Scooby Doo made a comeback).

So remember that Micronauts series that was announced a few years ago but never came out? According to Mitchell Golden and Eric Rogers, it was written off financially years ago, despite having 52 episodes all completed, but forbidden from airing.

[up] I'll be damned. surprised Did JMS have a grand finale in mind for Babylon 5 and this is that or we don't know?

[up] JMS says on twitter that if this movie is received well, they'll be more of them.

I certainly hope so, animation is a perfect way of working around the aging voice cast and restore them to their prime, plus it gives him a chance to fully realize events like the Telepath War and the Centauri war only glimpsed in the novels and snippets of the actual show.
