Hey all, I've got another question for those who watch the Sub as I am a dirty Dub watcher: what's Masked Royal's catchphrase in Japanese? In the dub, it's "enjoy", but I wonder if it's the same in the original language. Anyone know?

It's the same in the Japanese version.

Lana got the Eevee! Oh, and Popplio learned a new move, Surf.

Normally you would think it would be either Ash or Lilie getting the Eevee considering its unique look.

In fairness, Lana needed Eevee way more than either of them. She's barely done anything through the series and Popplio is pure vanilla without another Pokemon to interact with.

Calling it now, Scruffy evolves into Vaporeon.

Furthermore, if this series lasts another 20 years, the other 5 Eeveelutions will be accounted for among Ash's companions.

And if there's a Dragon-type eeveelution, Iris will get it.

The league's gonna have to be 4v4 battles at this point. With the series ending around this time next year due to Gen 8, there's no time for Ash to catch two more Pokemon.

How does "Nagisa" become "Marin" in English?

Zoroark: Or, Ash will be eliminated early.

Then again, it's not like Kiawe has a full stable of Pokemon that he can use. Nor Gladion.

So I guess it will have to ride on Ash... which likely means he'll be bringing in some of the old reserves.

Now which reserves would be rather interesting... It would put my Interquel theory to the test.

And not that it matters.

Anyone stupid enough to believe Ash was ever going to win a league (Who has two thumbs and was on that list? THIS FUCKING GUY!) was completely disillusioned of it due to X and Y.

They basically played every card in how far Ash can go in the league but the one card people want them to play: the one where he wins after so many attempts (we're about to reach #7 now) and so many years out of universe. Now that we know he'll never ever win and just keep trying forever, it's almost pointless.

Sun and Moon has been somewhat enjoyable because of it's wackiness, though it's still kinda playing it safe (the evil team plot has been barely touched and they more or less sped through it) but bothering with any kind of league again is just an insult when you know he'll ultimately fail.

If they won't let him win in the final match against a rival who's beaten him twice, then they won't let him win ever, and people do want to see him win. I suppose if you've been with the franchise long enough to know how long he's been at this (once again, that's me) then it's your own fault if you are disappointed.

I blame myself on this one....and the writers.

Shudo's ending was the best ending, but sheer virtue of being an actual ending.

[up]They don't have a choice. Alola not having a league yet was a plot point in the games, so the anime has no choice but to follow suit.

The only way the anime could ever drop Pokemon Leagues is if the games they're based on do so.

[up][up] Shūdo's ending is too much of a Gainax Ending, especially with the whole old Ash dreaming and then he becomes young Ash again (and the implication that Pokémon are somehow gone in Ash's adulthood).

If you want an actual ending, stick with the XYZ series finale. At least that one ended with something other than "Next Time, A New Adventure."

[up] I thin they mean the other alternate ending, with the Pokemon rebellion.

Another ending I heard about was 'Ash beats the Indigo League and Gary in the finals like in the games' but I can't find a source of that.

[up] Honestly, my latest rereading of Shūdo gives me a different impression of what this alternative ending means. Shūdo only offers it as a hypothetical ending that could have been used in either the series finale or a Pokémon finale. It's something he wanted to explore in the Pokémon World because it was a natural question but it's not exactly something that was going to be the ultimate destination for Ash and Pikachu. In fact, much of Shūdo's headcanon didn't seem to make in the final cut of the Pokémon anime even in the early days. It's also quite clear that Shūdo didn't even have a clear resolution for this hypothetical last episode. Does it end with the Pokémon Revolution succeeding or does it fizzle out when Ash teaches the true meaning of friendship to everybody?

Also note that Gold and Silver was going to come out soon with brand new Pokémon to catch and Gyms to battle. Yeah, even if the anime only lasted for a year and a half, I don't really see Game Freak allowing the anime to permanently close the door for future Pokémon stories and adaptations when they have a new game to promote.

I've seen this discussed while lurking Bulbagarden, but Ash most likely doesn't need to keep losing the league. It's not like being a "Pokemon Master" is tied to winning the league and, even if he wins, he can still get beat in whatever-happens-after-the-league.

He keeps on losing because it's tradition and because it's interesting to see him get his hopes up only to fail.

Well, this is a tradition that serves no purpose. I've heard on this wiki that Japan has a thing for repetition (finding it funny). I don't know how true it is, but if this is a result of that, it needs to stop.

What point is there in Ash still losing? Then again, what point is there in him winning now? Some might be excited if he did, some might just shrug and say finally! Other will probably not care anymore.

I can kinda stand a league because unlike XY Ash's whole personality and involvement hasn't been built around it this series.

To compare XYZ was largely a season load of hype it couldn't amount to, with the rest mostly just being very bland filler leading up to the big arcs. SM meanwhile seems to have a league but is treating it like another thing to check off, and is at least trying to make everything up to it enjoyable standalone.

[up][up]Ash is pretty much the Almighty Janitor now, he spends most of the time as a bumbling kid who sucks at getting any closer in his profession, but when forced to take action he's an ace. I feel like XY was aiming for this too with it's "moral victor" theme but it got obscured in the hype train.

Ash failing at the league and then doing something badass afterwards to vindicate himself seems pretty in-character for what he is now.

[up][up][up]The alleged plan for the show's finale was a Dawn of the Planet of the Apes thing with all the Pokemon rebelling and becoming independent from their trainers. Claims are Pikachu would lead and Meowth would become an ambassador of sorts.

[up][up]

"FINAL EPISODE: With Shudo likening it to Spartacus' rebellion, a situation would arise in which a great many Pokemon rebelled against their trainers (whom they believe are enslaving them), with circumstance dragging an unwilling Pikachu into being their leader and having to fight Ash. Meowth, able to speak both Pokemon and human language, would play a key role in resolving the conflict.

3RD MOVIE: Professor Oak and some other scientists would discover the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex (yes, seriously, an honest-to-goodness TYRANNOSAURUS REX), which prompts the realization that there were creatures in the world before Pokemon. Somehow, the skeletal dinosaur comes to life and wreaks havoc, with Ash, Misty, and Brock having to stop it. Team Rocket would team up with them to help, mainly because they want it lifeless again so that they can claim it for themselves."

[up][up] The Alola League will not survive scrutiny as far I am concern because of the past Leagues. Personally, I think it will be a boring League because of how mismanaged the whole build up to the League will be. Should I care or should I not? Without something like Ash traveling from island to island completing the trials, the momentum that Pokémon is known to have comes to a screeching halt. No one is sure if a League is even happening because of how vague it is. Maybe it's Kukui's pipe dream and it won't happen until next year in the Pokémon universe. Or maybe it's like the Game League where it's just the Elite Four. Or maybe it's just a Don George Tournament.

No hype for a League doesn't make the sting any less painful, that's is why I'm telling you. It's just putting the show on auto-pilot and giving the detractors more material to criticize Sun and Moon from dawn to dusk.

@Handsome Rob

Think the original Rocky film. Rocky Balboa didn't win his first fight against Apollo Creed in their official expedition match, but he sure did surprise the reigning champion. Always getting up for some more.

A recurring theme with modern Pokémon stories I noticed in the anime is that being champion doesn't make you a winner. Callahan from the recent Pokémon movie won that Pokémon Catching Tournament through cheating; and the only reason why Ash took second place is due to focusing his attention on a rampaging Tyrannitar. But as the film progresses, Callahan's lies caught up to him through three actions:

1) Creating a hype-mania for a rare Mythical Pokémon (that Callahan completely made up) that indirectly led to the Festival sabotages.

2) Misleading Risa into thinking that Eevee is a mythical Pokémon found in the deepest part of the forest. She was livid when she found out the truth and then turned to Ash for help.

3) Being exposed as a cheater in front of his niece.

XY probably did Second Place Is for Winners better, just as mentioned, that series tried to have its cake and eat it too and play as many fans into watching up to the league expecting a win.

I'm intrigued how the actual school setup will finish, it's not exactly fully fledged even now, and most of the exercises Ash has failed miserably at. Of course this might be another play on said character, since Ash is still by far the most competent of the protagonists (with the most achieved student also being the most novice trainer with a Big Brother Worship towards him).
