It could easily be both.
Like, they decided to do a re-colour, then it dawn on them that by making Dreadwing Skyquake's twin, you could do a very loose Mythology Gag about the original Dreadwing being two bots who combine, by making him one of a pair of twins (and note that we already have Hydra and Buster being mentioned in the video so the Dreadwing combination being part of a family isn't anything new.
One Strip! One Strip!I find it hilarious that Dreadwing is a combination of Dreadwind and Darkwing.
Namely because of Darkwing. Geez, I wonder how Hasbro lost that name...

He is the terror, that flaps in the night...
Bite my shiny metal ass.I know tfwiki for sure exploited that on their page for Darkwing.
With a "0", not an "O".New video from Rodimus Primal about Smokescreen:
So....Armada Smokescreen is pretty much the worst Smokescreen isn't he? Like, I recall that his toy wasn't very good due to the big crane on it throwing off his balance (which could have been solved by following the example of Hyoryu and allowing the crane to be folded up on his back).
Plus why does he need another hook on the back of his vehicle mode (which is his chest in Robot mode)?
One Strip! One Strip!Hasbro officially announces Titan Cybertron Universe Metroplex, based on Metroplex from the Unicron Trilogy!

17 years later and that alt mode is still awful.
Like, dont get me wrong, I love the trilogy getting some attention, but it's such a BAD design. The only thing even hinting at what his altmode is supposed to be is his weapon on top. Meanwhile Primus, Tidal wave, Energon Omega Supreme all would've made some killer UT figures.

Far more interesting to me...
INFERNO!!!!! (not revealed on his own, but he's on the box for Metroplex)
The sad, REAL American dichotomyMad props for the box art artist who clearly went all out trying to make Metroplex look cool and damn, succeeded.
And fuck yea, inferno!
Edited by Ghilz on Apr 19th 2022 at 1:02:46 AM
Wait what is he supposed to be?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Or rahter his weapon turns into that while Metroplex transforms into "Metroplex lying down after drinking too much with his weapon on top"
Edited by Ghilz on Apr 19th 2022 at 1:30:31 AM
OHHHHHH!!!
Yeah, Metroplex just looks like he turns into a box with some scoops on the front.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyAlso on the box is the Nemesis. Wonder if we're getting a figure of that someday to go with the Ark.
Poor Inferno, he's getting owned lol.
My Anime crush is LegosiEh.
He's fighting for his Queen. I'm sure he think it's Worth It.
Meanwhile, he's another video from the same dude I got the Transformers: Animated Prowl video from:
I think I've said this before, but I like when they combine the appearance of his toy look and his original animated look. This animated model does a damned good job of that, managing to pass off both looks really well.
Especially how it incorporates the boosters. You gotta do the boosters right for Jetfire.
His best toys do this as well, though I think the Classics toy does a better job of mixing the looks and has the best booster design. Meanwhile, his Generations toy looks closer to the actual jet that the Valkyries from Macross / Robotech were based on, and that looks great, but I feel its boosters aren't quite up to snuff.
As I said, you gotta do the boosters right for Jetfire. Otherwise he doesn't feel right.
One Strip! One Strip!I just now noticed Inferno on the cover.
Ooof poor guy.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Ok, that looks like an epic Metroplex. Though I agree with Ghilz, it'd be way cooler if we got a Tidal Wave Titan.
Also, read the Transformers: Beast Wars (2021) and eh, didn't like it. Skold's story in particular is really odd. So it takes place after Blackarachnia joined and before Terrorsaur died which I didn't think had enough time to tell a story like this. Where did Powerhug come from? He was just captured offscreen in the same timeframe?
And characterwise it's odd too. Everyone hates Skold. They all sit around watching surveillance videos of her fucking up. Which is weird because it just doesn't seem like something Megatron would care about and Scorponok and Waspinator didn't really have it in for her. Skold herself befriending and violently decapitating another person also doesn't seem in character for her. Her fight with Rhinox really never had her go that hard against him and killing Terrorsaur was only after he'd really pushed her. And Megatron reacting with fear at her doing something like that also doesn't feel in character.
It feels like an extended Bait the Dog story which I wasn't that fond of. I also still think it might have been a big Vok hallucination. They're messing around in skold's mind like they did with cheetor.
A new Transformers: Armada review from Ultra Primal:
So it occurs to me why the Rescue Bots have hollow insides. So they can use their bodies to protect the people they are rescuing if necessary.
Nice of Primal to bring up that point about Armada bots not being hollow and making me realize that little plot point, even if its just Fanon on my part.
One Strip! One Strip! This week, Chris Mc Feely gives us the basics on Lio Convoy:
Huh. I wonder what things would have been like if they'd used a Lion for Optimus Primal instead of a Gorilla in American Beast Wars
Then again the obvious parallels with both the original King Kong movies (where he fights a T-Rex) and the idea of Godzilla vs King Kong meant they couldn't resist making Primal and Megatron what they were.
Also, a reminder that Angolmois beat Dark Energon to the punch on being derived from Unicorn.
One Strip! One Strip!Double post for Ultra Primal's review of the Japanese OVA that (poorly) bridges the gap between the end of Season 2 of G1 and Transformers The Movie, Scramble City!
You know, it's kinda a waste that we never see the Scramble City combiners take advantage of their ability to swap limbs like we do in this OVA.
Primal is right that the only one who really plays into that is Ruination / Baldigus from Car Robots in Disguise, and he's just a re-colour of Bruticus anyway.
Also, why is it that Carlie and Chip never appeared in an episode together? That's really weird. Maybe because they were both tech geniuses and the writers were afraid of overlap?
One Strip! One Strip!
I never considered it before, but considering quite a few incarnations are usually two bots, it makes sense.
The blunter answer would probably be "it was cheaper to recolor a character model than design a new one". But it's an interesting take on the idea.
