Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Anyway for Monster.The Otherworld

This as the page quote

"De Rais predates Báthory by nearly a century. He was a French knight who fought with Joan of Arc. Legend says he killed hundreds of children. While some claimed it was occult sacrifice on behalf of a demon, trial records indicate he was closer to a modern serial killer, murdering children for sexual pleasure."

I may try and read Devilman Grimoire and have any candidates for Halloween, unless Lighty's still intent on doing that.

Mir, mind adding the quote to the page? Also, any more examples, or can I request locking when I submit the batch next week?

Hello, I come here to propose another villain of Brazilian soap opera to be a Complete Monster, with a some similarities with Josiane previously presented.

Who is the work?

A Lei do Amor (Wounded Past or The Law of Love) is a Brazilian telenovela from TV Globo, whose main plot revolves around the couple Pedro and Heloísa, who were separated in their youth, when Pedro was sent abroad, but met 20 years later when he returns to the country and finds Heloísa married to an abusive man named Tião.

Who is she and what she did?

Magnolia, also known as Mag, was the stepmother of the protagonist Pedro, married with his father, Fausto, the mayor of the fictional city where the story is located. She introduces herself as a deeply religious woman, to the point of being known as the "saint" of the city where she lives. However, Magnolia is the opposite of what he shows to be for everyone, cheating on her husband with several men, more precisely Tião, a "love" of youth, and Ciro, a younger man.

In the first phase of the telenovela, although this was only revealed at the end, Magnólia had her affair with Ciro discovered by her daughter-in-law, who had a baby, her granddaughter. The daughter-in-law photographs moments when Magnolia and Ciro kissed, but she threatens to murder her own granddaughter, still a baby (Would Hurt a Child), if her affair with Ciro came up. When her daughter-in-law abandoned her children to escape due to such a threat, Magnolia had her car brakes cut, causing an accident that killed her. All of this was only possible to be discovered thanks to a letter found by Magnolia's second daughter-in-law and by the confessions of her son, who always protected his mother, despite always being humiliated by her.

Magnolia proved to be a cruel woman since she was young, when she had no qualms about burning young Tião Bezerra, who genuinely loved her, with hot iron just because he was poor, which probably contributed to him becoming a bitter, cruel man, and one of the main villains of the plot.

In beggining of the soap opera, Mag, who is married to Pedro's father and has two children with him, pretends to be a good woman, who despite showing bad character, gives no clue to her hideous villainy that only reveals itself from the middle to the end of the plot. At this time, Magnolia, with the support of her husband, who was a corrupt man, set out to separate Pedro from his love, Heloisa.

Is revelated that Magnólia had accelerated the death of Pedro's mother to marry his father, which of course, was not for love, since in addition to being betrayed, she eventually becomes his enemy arriving to order his death twice when he discovered the truth about who Magnolia is. The first attack, not only left him seriously injured physically, mute and without walking, but also took the life of the woman with whom he fell in love after he separated from her, a kind secretary named Susana, with whom he would run away to have a new chance in life and be able to redeem his mistakes. Magnolia did not give up killing him, ordering a second attack that was quickly thwarted, until Faust could not stand the wickedness of his ex wife and died of a heart attack. She certainly married him because he is a great businessman, who eventually becomes mayor, which leads Magnólia to a prominent position.

About the affair between Magnolia and Ciro, in addition to having an affair with him for 20 years, Magnolia also makes him lie to his blind mother and still takes advantage of Ciro's mother's blindness to hide a fortune at her home. If that didn't makes Magnolia immoral enough, Ciro, her lover, was still married to her own daughter, showing that Magnolia is more than willing to cross absurd lines of morality. Ciro himself turns against her and her actions in the middle of the novel and begins to redeem himself.

When Magnolia's affair with Ciro is discovered by another Ciro lover, Beth, she uses a photograph to blackmail her and, luring her to a building site, Magnolia kills her even after she erases all copies when she claims not to believe in God, burying his body in the same place. Later, her husband, Faust, sees the revolver used to kill Beth in possession of Magnolia, so she threatens his and Pedro's lives if he says anything.

Eventually, a video of Magnolia confessing to Beth's death ends up in the hands of her granddaughter's boyfriend, Helio. When he tries to get hold of the video to possibly incriminate her, she breaks into his apartment to kill him. Taking advantage of the sound of fireworks, she fires a series of shots at him, killing him in cold blood and telling him "send a hug to his aunt when he meets her in hell" before firing the last shot. Then she breaks the phone containing the video of her confession, however, Helio's laptop's camera recorded his murder.

The video of Hélio's murder is seen by Pedro, Ana Lúcia, Hélio's girlfriend, and Magnolia's daughter-in-law, the new wife of his son Hercules, and on the same day he witnesses the video of his boyfriend being killed by his grandmother, Ana Lúcia discovers that Mag also killed her mother and threatened her life when she was a baby, causing her to beat Magnolia, only for Magnolia to claim that she should have killed her granddaughter and try to hit her in the head with a stone sculpture to kill her, who manages to escape and tries to strangle his grandmother, being stopped by Pedro.

With the police after her, Magnolia murders a innocent street sweeper, hitting her head with a fire extinguisher to wear his clothes and disguise herself, but the plan frustrates and she is arrested. In jail, she murders the detainee chief, smothering her with a pillow, and manages to escape from jail with the help of her son, Hercules. Then, your new (and last) evil plan kicks in.

With the help of her son, Magnólia kidnaps Heloísa, who is now Peter's wife and is pregnant, threatening her and her baby's life (Would Hurt a Child again) with a gun and taking her to a house hidden in the forest, when psychologically abuses and torture her. She asks for a good amount of money in exchange for Heloisa, but even so, she leaves her alone, pregnant and suffering in the forest house to eventually die of hunger and complications, and tries to escape in disguise from the country, without even caring that her son was arrested. When arrested at the airport, Magnolia wields the gun to threaten the police and flees in a car, being chased by Tião Bezerra and firing shots at him, until he reaches a train line where he commits suicide in front of Tião.

Mitigating Factors/Freudian Excuse

Freudian excuse? None! Mitigating factors? Any love that Magnolia claims to feel for someone, for Tião, for example, is a trait of Faux Affable Evil and most likely, there is some interest behind it, in fact, she humiliated him when he was poor and burned him with iron, although it is very easy for her to declare "love" to him if he is rich. Magnolia didn't really love Ciro, it was just carnal passion and perversion. Moreover, he was still useful for her hiding her fortune at his house, taking advantage of her mother's visual impairment.

For several moments, she proved to be a fake enough so that others would never suspect who she is. She felt no love for her children, having a blatant affair with the man she married her daughter and humiliating both her and her son Hercules, who clearly had his personality and character affected by her abuse.

Henious standart

A typical representation of the character Faux Affable Evil, Magnolia goes along the plot revealing itself increasingly malign to the point of ending as a villain with acts heinous enough to be a candidate for the category Pure Evil. Whereas, in the beginning, we didn’t imagine that she would ever become so cruel, since the most she showed was being a bad character, doing mild villainous acts, such as setting up a couple or cheating on her husband, until we know that she went so far as to threaten the life of a baby, her own granddaughter, and also, in the end, torture, psychologically abuse and threaten the life of a pregnant woman.

Under the hideous standard, no villain is as hideous in his actions as Magnolia. Besides that, unlike other antagonists of the plot, like Ciro or Tião, it has no real redeeming quality or mitigating factor. Her son Hercules is pathetic and incompetent and is not as hideous as she is, although he can sometimes be taken seriously.

Veredict?

An easy YES to Magnólia. Together with the already approved Josiane and Santiago, she is configured as one of the villains of Brazilian television drama that best fits the category.

There's 30 entries from scripts. Spread over three sections. I don't get how it's unneeded personally. But you are more familiar with this process and what would probably need a page then me. So okay. Thanks for your feedback

[tup] to Magnolia.

As for my writeup, here we go. If it looks good, I'll put it in the sandbox. As it's the second CM of the work, I'll be indenting.

  • Dragalia Lost: Augus, the Arc Villain of "Forgotten Truths", is a cold, calculating general in a war between humans and dragons. Wishing for humans to dominate the land, he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even if he must use threats. One gambit he pulls off to take out as many dragons as possible involves deliberately destroying their habitats, goading them to attack the capital city that he lined with Mana Bombs. The capital's residents were not informed of his gambit; as a result, millions of lives are lost, both human and dragon, once the Mana Bombs were set off. In the end, he had no respect for life, as seen with his gleeful reactions to the demon Morsayati's havoc.

Edit: Better pothole.
