Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Lighty, don't know if you saw my PM: Should Stroud go after Thanatos? And should the tree go to the Final Fantasy page since that's how the series started; or keep at the main VG page?

Sure to Mongul.

Cool, I'll look into the other films first just in case there's a moral agency issue regarding the cloning that I'm not aware of. This might take me a while since Netflix only has the 2nd 3rd and 4th films.

So Vicious from Cowboy Bebop is being discussed on the Magnificent Bastard forum right now and there's some crimes mentioned in his Bastard EP that I think should probably be in his monster Write up. Specifically the EP mentions that Vicious bombed a ship belonging to a rival clan and that his attempts to kill Spike and Julia result in a lot of innocents dying. I haven't seen Bebop myself but if these both happen then these should be in his write up.

@Papyru: Personally I think the first Isaac clone fails the heinous standard when compared to the second clone and the Original who both wanted to wipe out mankind. Then there’s also the whole issue about moral agency and clones in Resident Evil. In the fifth movie we saw that clones can be created with specific personalities and memories. Sure they are still humans who can learn and change - the second Isaac clone who turned into a religious fanatic would be an example - but if you’re created with an “evil” personality and don’t even know that you’re clone it’s going to impair your moral agency.

As for Wesker: Sadly he ended up as the dragon of the real villain. The movies sure love marginalizing the characters from the games. Not sure if his own crimes are heinous enough compared to him. That said, I’ve heard the novel of The Final Chapter actually shows the battle in Washington and Wesker’s betrayal. So maybe the Novel version could be worse enough?

That said, that’s just me and I tend to be overly critical sometimes. If you want to make an EP feel free to do so. Even if the candidates get rejected, it’s good to have a final verdict one them.

@ VeryVileVillian, I personally think this game should be judged on its own, a lot of the Marvel novels from the 90s made attempts to connect to comic book continuity of the time, referring to stories like Born Again from Daredevil (though the Spidey novels mostly ignored the Clone Saga and gave Spidey a slightly different origin story that involved Dr. Octopus and an anti-gravity ray and there was an X-Men short story late into this novel series that gave a different story about the return of William Stryker that was different from the comics), but the books are in a different medium and give the villains new stories and actions. I think this video game is in the same camp.

The only 90s novels that were directly comic-related were that Daredevil one where Bullseye didn't count, and the one with the Maestro (basically a novel version of the comic).

Speaking of Maestro. Anyone read his appearances in Contest Of Champions (2015 run) where he's the Big Bad. If so does he do anything worth adding to his current writeup

[up][up] They would mention other stuff, the Mutant Massacre was mentioned in the Mutant Empire books, the death of Gwen Stacy was mentioned a lot (Mysterio made a hologram of Gwen falling from the Brooklyn Bridge to mock Spidey's past failures, Spidey having to deal with a serial killer targetting blonde women right after Gwen's death, etc), Kraven's Last Hunt was referred to now and again.

There may be some more keepers in the 90s novel verse, the Leader from the Gamma Quest novels that have been recently re-released as an omnibus and there was a Spidey short story featuring organ thieves and a Silver Surfer short story where Galactus' herald Morg tried to commit genocide on a planet.

Would be cool with a Vicious expansion for sure.

Here's the majority of my write-ups, I'll do Hive and Rockwell in the next day or so.

  • Micronauts: The Time Traveler trilogy by Steve Lyon:

    • Ordaal is a manipulative slave driver and organ harvester who arrives on Earth seemingly in peace, pulling the population of Angel's Gift into partnership while truthfully butchering its inhabitants one by one and harvesting their organs to be sold on the Microspace black market. Ordaal runs a "circus" of various aliens he has enslaved as entertainment for the citizens of the town, all while torturing and even executing some of them if they step out of line. Allying with the mayor of Angel's Gift, Ordaal abuses and threatens the man into allowing Ordaal's evil to be perpetrated, personally killing a large number of the man's security staff for the pettiest of reasons before trying to flee Earth with an entire group of humans as hostages for him to butcher later and kills his way through a street of innocents blocking his path to escape before being stopped.

    • Maruunus Ki assumes command of Micropolis in Karza's absence, and proves to be a near-equally depraved ruler. Enslaving the citizens of Micropolis through brute force and addicting them to his virtual reality tech called "the System," Ki subjects the billions of innocents to starvation and hard labor, torturing and killing any who try to stand up to his rule. When the heroic Acroyear tries to take down Ki, Ki uses his minion Persephone to manipulate Acroyear into falling in love with her, only to later reveal the truth and viciously mock the hero over it. Ki ultimately betrays his entire planet to be afflicted by an alien plague, setting himself up in a secure bunker and slaughtering anyone who knows its location so he can outlive the plague while bragging that the millions who die are replaceable peasants.

  • G.I. Joe (IDW):

    • Rodrigo Vargas is one of the candidates to become the next Cobra Commander, and a Mad Scientist to boot. A sadistically curious lunatic who is introduced covered in blood from an experiment, Vargas begins his campaign to become the new Commander by seemingly donating countless medicine to the city of Kariba, Zimbabwe as an act of charity, but in reality, Vargas has poisoned the medicine, infecting hundreds of thousands with a monstrous plague that drives them into bloodthirsty insanity. As Kariba turns into a warzone of infected citizens tearing the military and each other apart while the government firebombs it, Vargas, suspecting his girlfriend of being a counterintelligence agent, infects her with a brain-eating parasite that destroys her free will centers, before offering her the choice of killing herself, or letting the parasite continue its course and give her an agonizing death. Even when infected with his own virus, Vargas just laughs that there is no cure, bragging that he was planning on letting the virus spiral out of Kariba and kill millions as nothing but a "test" for it, after which he could target anywhere he wanted with a horrible, plague-induced death.

    • Blacklight is a Cobra sniper with a cold love of killing. Carrying out a bevy of assassinations on Cobra's orders, Blacklight, when sent to capture a scientist for his superiors, tricks a group of college students into being his bullet shields and kills a security guard to accomplish his goal. Later killing a large group of G.I. Joes but failing at his larger mission, Blacklight is left out in the cold by the Baroness for this failure, and instantly begins planning his return to Cobra. Blacklight travels across the world, completing his trip by threatening and murdering several people for their transportation means, and tries to assassinate a traitorous Cobra agent before slaughtering a security patrol and destroying an entire building full of people. Blacklight's final appearances sees him plunge two G.I. Joes and their charge into complete darkness, Blacklight happily planning to kill them off one by one in darkness while he just smiles about it.

  • BIONICLE (Franchise-wide): Makuta Teridax serves as the Overarching Villain of the entire franchise. A treacherous sociopath who betrayed Mata Nui and plunged him into an unending slumber, Teridax went on to terrorize the island of Mata Nui by unleashing corrupted Rahi and the Bohrok in the Chronicles era to wipe out Matoran civilizations, later using the Piraka as his puppets to enslave and murder the Matoran of Voya Nui in the Ignition and Legends arcs, before betraying his entire race of Makuta to destruction as part of his master plan. In the Glatorian arc, Teridax usurps and banishes Mata Nui, assuming control of the Matoran Universe and beginning to reshape it to his whims, before trying to wipe out Mata Nui's new home of Bara Magna and its billions of inhabitants—including his own armies—just to spite Mata Nui, planning to then move on and conquer all life across all universes, and wipe out any who oppose his reign. Always portrayed as evil as he is brilliant, Teridax threatened billions of lives with his villainy, with nearly every major act of horror in the story tying back to Teridax in some way.

  • BIONICLE movie trilogy (in chronological order): Makuta Teridax schemes to rule the Matoran in Legends of Metru Nui, plunging Metru Nui's leader Turaga Dume into a stasis slumber and assuming control of Metru Nui. Hiring the Dark Hunters Krekka and Nidhiki to hunt and kill Toa, Teridax frames the Toa Metru and orders them eliminated before trapping thousands of Matoran in stasis pods, planning to wipe their memories then awaken them as their savior and ruler. When the Toa interfere, Teridax murders Nidhiki and Krekka to absorb their power and tries to destroy the Toa and dozens of Matoran they are rescuing, killing Turaga Lhikan in the process. Though beaten, Teridax calls to Roodaka and Sidorak in Web of Shadows, having them overrun Metru Nui with Visorak and reduce the island to a barren wasteland, hoping to leave the slumbering Matoran trapped forever. Returning to terrorize the Matoran once more in Mask of Light, Teridax unleashes the Rakshi onto a variety of Matoran cities, ordering them to destroy everything and everyone in their path to retrieve the Mask of Light, and tries to tempt Takua into betraying his best friend to destruction.

  • BIONICLE Podcasts and serials: In the Web Original serials, podcasts and story blogs, Makuta Teridax's rise to power and ensuing reign is given insight to its full depravity. When Teridax staged his coup against Mata Nui and the Brotherhood of Makuta, he had any dissenters to his rule hunted down and brutally murdered, mounting their masks on his wall as trophies. Encouraging and endorsing betrayals, mass murders, and horrific experiments in his Brotherhood, Teridax soon enough assumes control of the entire Matoran Universe and enslaves any surviving Makuta before exterminating them all to ensure no threats to his rule. As supreme god of the Matoran, Teridax tortures and corrupts Toa into insanity and villainy, turns one of his former partners into a painting, and begins systematically wiping out thousands of innocent beings as he establishes his godhood.

  • BIONICLE: In these semi-canon tie-in games, Makuta Teridax first infects the Rahi of Mata Nui in Mata Nui Online, driving the docile creatures mad and siccing them onto Matoran villages, nearly drowning the entirety of Ga-Koro as just one example of the ensuing destruction. Reducing entire forests to scorched ashes and using the naive Akhmou to unleash a plague onto Po-Koro that nearly wipes the whole city out, Teridax corrupts and controls Toa Lewa into enslaving Matoran and working them to near death, all while Lewa is completely aware of the wrongdoing he is carrying out. In BIONICLE: The Game, Teridax unleashes Bohrok and Rahi onto Matoran across Mata Nui, putting hundreds in peril, and in the DS version of BIONICLE Heroes, Teridax captures the Toa Inika and strips them of their masks before using their power to rip Voya Nui apart.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

If Lighty wants to do it I'm cool with it but if not here's one I made to save him some time:

  • Cowboy Bebop: Vicious is Spike Spiegel's former friend and partner from the Red Dragon Syndicate who is defined by his bloodthirsty ambition and utter lack of regard for others. When his mentor showed interest in signing a peace treaty with a rival crime organization, Vicious killed him and rigged the ship of the rival representative to explode, knowing his mentor's death would also drag out Spike for a chance to face him. Confronting Gren, a man he betrayed years earlier, Vicious shows no concern for Gren's horrific treatment after Vicious implicated him for a crime he himself committed and even chastises his own subordinate for giving his life to save Vicious from Gren's trap. Revealed to have responded to finding out his girlfriend Julia was cheating on him with Spike by trying to force her to kill him, Vicious hunts the two down after killing the leaders of the Red Dragon and taking command himself, causing the deaths of numerous innocents by his men shooting up the bar Julia works at before Julia herself is killed. A power-hungry monster under his stoic charm, the brutal measures Vicious takes to secure power show the utter monster beneath the surface.
