Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I wasn't trying to be passive aggressive or anything.

Anyway, today was the season 3 premier of The Lion Guard, and it added even more crimes to Scar's rapsheet. Unfortunately, by the time the two weeks pass, I'll be on vacation. I'll try to make the most of my limited internet use of there, but I hope there is someone else here who has been following the show.

@Bobg I been checking out Lion Guard recently. It’s third season is actually getting interesting. If you’re aren’t back from vacation by the time two weeks past, I can discuss Scar’s new crimes in two weeks following the episode for you. If that’s ok with you that is.

[up] I'm actually leaving for vacation right on the 17th. It'll be a long drive. When I arrive, I'll check in here when I get the chance. My internet should be limited there, so I'll make the most of it. I'm supposed to be there for 2 weeks. I'll try to make the most of my limited usage since, given how fast this thread moves now, there would be over a hundred new pages when I got back. Imagine how Locked Out of the Loop I would be if I literally didn't look at this thread for a solid 2 weeks. Funny, years ago I had wondered how much would change here while someone involved in this thread was away serving time in prison or something. So much as already changed these past couple years. We even have those C Ms by author and troper and incarnations per character pages now.

Btw ACW, if Lucinda ends up becoming a page image for Grimm Fairy Tales... I honestly found a better caption for her that just enhances the image cruelty. And its from Lighty's EP:

"Come on, Sela. Don't you know? Bad girls have all the fun!"

I think it works better to convey the trope given Lucinda is well... You know... A freaking sociopath who loves to cause misery For the Evulz

Also. Sure to Cosmo the Green haired fairy

I found this on Battlestar Galactica (2003):

  • Admiral Helena Cain, commander of the Pegasus. While she has a pragmatic and typically effective approach to fighting Cylons, she is unutterably brutal and murders hundreds of civilians in the pursuit of military interests, not to speak of how she treats prisoners.

I cannot comment on this entry as I have never watched the show, but I am convinced that it is unapproved.

[down] Scar was probably deemed insufficiently heinous at that time, but that's just my opinion. Syndrome was once on the Never Again List for the same reason, until Lighty came up with this argument and lots of people agreed with him.

Speaking of the Never Again List, why exactly was Scar originally on the list? And who else was on it that eventually got added or cut for that matter?

[up][up]I looked at the Charachter Page, it seems to say she loved her father and sister.

[up] he was on the list cause at the time it was thought he wasn't bad enough til someone pointed out the whole "almost letting entire pride die out of his Ego" thing. Also, looked up old discussions with him, dear Lord those were a Nightmare. This threads come a long way.

The only one I can think of who had a simmular situation was Syndrome....after many years of being on the list, we reevaluated him and, it was pretty much collectively agreed the reasons he was cut didn't hold up at all(His Freudian Excuse, not being bad enough, being too Funny)And the majority of the thread had held that opinion but didn't want to start anything cause he was on the NA list.

[up][up] IIRC, it was because he wasn't considered heinous enough... until someone pointed out he condemned the entire population of the Pridelands to death by starvation when he vetoed Sarabi's recommendation of a temporary move. At least, that's what I remember reading; I wasn't here for it.

I remember another reason why Scar wasn't considered a CM for a little while was because a book called "A Tale of Two Brothers" revealed that Scar didn't have the best upbringing (his first name was Taka, Swahili for Waste), and some at the time considered this as a valid Freudian Excuse.

It was later reevaluated that not only was this not a valid FE, but said backstory wasn't mentioned in any of the films, adaptations or spin-offs. I'm also not sure if said book is even canon anymore (if it was ever canon to begin with).

Scar's character page puts that Excuse into perspective regarding The Lion Guard. Even though his brother was chosen to be king over him he was still given the important position of leader of the Lion Guard but he still wasn't satisfied and violently lashed out when The Lion Guard refused to help him become king. This all shows that he was always a power hungry psycho.

The season 3 premier that aired today established that that book is non canon. I won't spoil anything big, but the show gave a new origin story to Scar's...scar. It also establishes that that's not his real name, though it doesn't say what it was. Interestingly, between all the different continuities, Scar has no consistent origin story for his scar. There's the one in the book that also states that his real name was Taka (the only version to actually give him a true name) which is apparently canon to the KH universe according to his character profile in the strategy guide, there's the new remake which implies that he got his scar in his failed fight with Mufassa when he challenged him for the throne, there's the musical, which does not give him any backstory at all, and there's the new canon one revealed in the show today, which again, I won't spoil.

Ya know, funny thing, when I was a kid, I thought that "Scar" was his actual name. When I first read about se7en, I thought that "John Doe" was the character's real name. It actually took me a while to finally realize that "Bluebeard" was just a nickname from the fairytale character's...blue beard. Ironically, I was the one who added this to the Ben Drowned YMMV page:

  • I Am Not Shazam: Drowned is not his surname. The reason the story is called Ben Drowned is because Ben is the first name of the boy, and he died by drowning.

A lot of creepypasta writers actually think "Drowned" is his last name.

Any C Ms Known Only by Their Nickname that any of you used to think was their actual name?
