During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I could always link you the criteria unless you've already read them.
Alright, thanks Beast and Elfen, I'll be sure to do so.
Something is wrong. Cipher from The Fate of the Furious is listed as a Complete Monster, and I know she was approved, but when I looked in the Related section for The Fate of the Furious, no Monster subpages were listed. Why?
Having went to the CM subpage Cipher was listed on, I found that the title of the work (The Fate of the Furious) links to the main series page (The Fast and the Furious) rather than the individual movie Cipher's from. This is probably because Cipher was approved before that movie got a YMMV page, which in turn probably means many of the individual films weren't given their own pages for a while, with the main page covering most of them.
I have a question
Can villains from play-by-post role-playing games count as Complete Monsters?
Whats the work in question? @Jokester

"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."No particular work, just wondering if any play-by-post villains can count
We've had play-by-post game villains count, yes. Uncommonly, but they'd counted. Just so long as the character isn't yours and the PBP can be publicly viewed in some way, that's entirely kosher for an EP.
Here's something from a roleplay (The Insane Quest of Unfathomable Randomness):
- Complete Monster: Sola Soulhawk has attempted genocide, destroying worlds, killing her foes' closest friends just to mess with her foes, Cold-Blooded Torture, and a creepy fascination with her cousin that combines Incest Subtext with murderous intent.
The way it was written made me think it was unapproved, but a look in the Related page showed it under Other Media. Does anyone else think this could use a rewrite?
That's a pre-EP entry. Actually, I think a lot from the RPG section haven't really been sanctioned... the Whateley Universe ones, the Crimson King, the Dino Attack RPG ones...
Honestly? If we can't get someone to safely validate and rewrite those ones, I'd say gut most of them.

Guess I may as well delete this from the YMMV tab for now, but anyone who's familiar with this roleplay is free to do an EP.

If we delete it from YMMV, we have to strike it from Other Media too. Are we all okay with that?
Sure, but I can't do it myself because I'm not one of the mods.
So...from the looks of it, Scooby Apocalypse had just been announced to be cancelled, with the final issue wrapping up sometime in April.
Who's reserved discussion on it?
Ravok was handling it (I think)but he hasn't been around for a while... guess up for grabs now.
But what if the play-by-post villain is shared by me and another player
Sorry, you can't propose them. Is the game available to the general public? Cause then someone here might check it out.
Here is a incompleted role-play i found on the Land Before Time wiki (i was browsing through the wiki cause i like the franchise and came across this role-play about various bad guys from the series reviving the bad guy from the 1st movie. i haven't contributed to it however)
You can propose that one yourself, just not your character.
Also, just reserved The Mermaid: Lake of the Dead.

I was the one who created the pages for each Fast and Furious movie.
Not going to be able to tackle them anytime soon, but I guess I'll be the guy to check up on all those play-by-post villains once I have some free time.
to Whoever I missed.
Things are really about to get Fun around hereI'll fix Cipher's entry today.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM Drafts
You could also use this to reserve some of the works that were already released before. @Michael
