Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alright, doesn't seem like mods are a problem for anyone so here I go. Now I will be spoiling the plot for a least one mod so if any one would like to see the story first (which I would recommend) the link to a let's play of the mod will be here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPsnExzLHxI&list=PLC344244FC215B9A0 It will take about three hours to watch in its entirety, but it's well worth it I assure you. You may also want to watch in case you want to verify my information.

What's the Work?

In the the modding community there is a gentleman by the name of Paul 'Simyaz' Thomson. Simyaz create three mods called Ruined Tail's Tale, Tears of the Fiend, and Malevolent all taking place in the same continuity called The Fiend Saga. The Big Bad's of Ruined Tail's Tale are evil, but most of there deeds are ether off screen or only implied. Everything you see them do is only to one person, and more than one does these things to him. Tears of the Fiend's greater scope villian is a real nasty piece work, responsible for among other things, influencing Cleon into slaughtering an entire town, unfortunately the mod is ambiguous about whether or not he loves his accomplice. Malevolent however is where we get are candidate. Set after you save Cyrodiil from the Oblivion crisis, Malevolent tells the story of a set of living armor called the Armor of Malevolence which you choose to work with or against. The Armor is mainly only trying to insure its own survival (all be it through immoral means) and can be agreeable if you work with it, the same can not be said for the man who commissioned it....

Who is Captain Maelin?

Captain Lucius Maelin is the aspiring Champion of Cyrodiil and a captain of the imperial guard. Maelin was groomed by Edward Pellew to become the next champion of Cyrodiil, but was passed up in favor of the player character. Believing his destiny and his fame to have been stolen Maelin plotted revenge and his own rise to champion. After spending much of his masters fortune commissioning a suit of armor and giving it sentient with a partial copy of his own personality, Maelin is called away to destroy a lich threatening a large town. However instead Maelin strikes a bargain with the lich, in return for not attacking the lich would place the armor in its armory for the player. When the player finally meets Maelin he plays the part of an ally and in lists the player in destroying the lich. Once inside Maelin lets several of his own die by the liches hands in order to so the player will be enticed at the armors offer of help. After destroying the lich and parting ways with Maelin the player is then enslaved by the armor and forced to do its biding. With or with out the players assistance the armor will then hunt down the various people involved with its creation as well as anyone with knowledge of its only weakness, including a blacksmith, an enchanter, and another one of Pellew's students. After you decide the armors fate you are ambushed by Maelin in a private tomb, you are then forced to kill the five guards he brought with him in self defense. Maelin then informs you that he created the armor with the express prose of committing those murders, he tricked you into wearing it so he could pin the murders on you, and he destroy all the evidence against him by burning down the Pellew manor. Maelin then gloats that the murders the armor committed and the deaths of the guards he brought with him will be more than enough to strip you of your rank as champion, and since you can't prove he did any of these things with all the witnesses dead, he will be reward with the rank of champion for his efforts against you. Then knowing he can't hope to kill you and that he doesn't need to, he make a hasty escape gloating that one day he will ensure you are tried and executed. Since the story ends here, this is the last you see of Maelin.

Heinous standard?

While Malevolent takes place inside Elder Scroll IV, it's a seprate story by virtue of being a fan made mod and as such shouldn't be held to the normal game's standard. However it's in continuity with the other fiend saga mods, so it's the heinous standard of the saga as a whole. Maelin's only competition the villain of Tears of the Fiend, and while his are pretty heinous, I do not think the bar is high enough to disqualify Maelin.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nothing to speak of. Maelin is an aspiring Champion of Cyrodiil, but the only deed of how he acquired this title that you are told of is that he killed the champion of the Kvatch arena who was also a wanted criminal. No other deeds of his supposed heroism are ever mentioned, nor does he show any remorse for his actions. He also has no loved ones to speak of.

Conclusion?

I believe Maelin is a Complete Monster [tup], that much is obvious, but it's not up to me to decide. So I look forward to hear the response from you guys.

[tup]Queen and Maelin.

Actually have another candidate from Red Sonja, suggested by Lighty: King Kazel from the mini-series Red Sonja: Atlantis Rises.

Who is Kazel? What as he done?

The ancient ruler of Atlantis, a civilization that was devastated long ago when Thulsa Doom awoke the Dreaming God, whom the Atlanteans worshiped. Upon beholding his folly, Doom used his powers to undo the curse he had brought upon Atlantis and put its residents and the Dreaming God to sleep beneath the waves. In the present, the weakened spirit of Doom returns to the lost city and reawakens the Dreaming God and Atlantis. Upon reawakening, Kazel has Doom confined to the dungeons and sets forth on a plan of world domination.

First laying siege to the capital of Baalar, Kazel has his forces slaughter the city's forces, personally killing the king, and orders for any who surrender to be taken as slaves...only to kill two soldiers who do just that, as cowards have no place in his empire. Once the capital is under his control, Hazel unleashes of campaign of destruction across the mainland, razing any kingdoms in his path and slaughtering or enslaving hundreds of civilians. His conquest is cut short, however, when word reaches him that Thulsa Doom has usurped control over Atlantis in his absence. Returning to Atlantis, Kazel is quick to decapitate an Atlantean who tells him of Thulsa's usurpation of power. Confronting Thulsa in his throne room, Kazel attempts to kill him to reassert control, but by then, Doom has grown too powerful, and Kazel is quickly overthrown and hurled into a pit to perish while Doom assumes total control.

Mitigating factors?

Yeah, no. He cares not for his people, as the part where he beheads an Atlantean for bringing him unwanted news demonstrates. I'd say he passes the heinous standard as well, with multiple counts of whole-scale slaughters of entire cities and mass enslavement as well. Doom may prove to be the bigger threat overall, but Kazel is easily nasty enough on his own.

Thoughts?

Alright, have time for a quick one before bed...In the world of Red Sonja, enter...Loki.

Who is Loki?

Son of Odin, brother of Thor and the young Gamble...Loki runs afoul of Sonja when she becomes entangled in one of his schemes. Odin is a base villain in this, but Loki? Loki despises his brother, largely due to his fathers favoritism toward their mothr's tribes, the Budini, who are distinguished by their red hair. As th Vanir gods move on toward conquest? Loki decides to play a nasty 'prank' on Thor by butchering his entire Budini tribe, before trying to murder Gamble, the youngest son of Odin there. gamble escapes to Sonja's side, who draws Loki's ire. Turns out Loki has a bit of a procedure: Marching down, massacring everything in his way, slaughtering Budini tribes as he finds them, only keeping the beautiful women if they submit to his harem...one tribe leader is brought in to negotiation, until he sees the eye of Odin on Loki's hand. Loki, in a fit, kills him for lying about seeing it, but then casually notes honesty wouldn't have helped him anyways.

Odin gets involved as well, warring against his kids, as Loki is left caught between their schemes and continuously trying to kill more people. At the conclusion, Odin is kiled, but Loki makes a last attempt to kill Thor by shapeshifting into him and convincing Sonja to kill Thor. Sonja sees through it and stabs Loki, dropping him off a cliff.

Loki later resurfaces in the sequel mini Revenge of the Gods where he's moping about feeling sorry for himself until a group of raiders come and massacre the town. Loki soon learns that the nearby kingdom contains something that he can really use...namely it's where the forces of Armageddon are sealed off. Loki helps take over the raiders, setting their invincible leader Raja off against Sonja as he leads them to massacre everything in his path, arriving at the palace where he captures the king and tortures him horribly. Sonja gets Thor back in the game after his psychotic brother, but Loki is through with playing. He decides if he can't have the world? He's going to destroy it and rebuild from the ashes...he unleashes the worst enemies of the pantheon: Jormungandr, Fenrir and Surtur, giving them free reign to wipe out the world in Ragnarok. Sonja rallies the city's armies to kill Fenrir as Thor fights with Jormungandr, Loki gleefully directing the serpent to murder his brother. Thor kills the serpent but takes a fatal dose of venom. However, as Loki gloats, Thor attacks him, driving a spike into his back and saying Loki won't outlive him...and tears Loki's head off before sacrificing himself to help Sonja bring down Surtur, with Loki dead at last.

Heinousness?

Oh, well above. Loki has plenty of massacres, manipulations, murders and other cruelties to his name, but a tthe end? He's one of the only villains who opts to completely exterminate everyone on the planet just so he can rebuild with himself on the top later.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nothing save revulsion at the Budini for Odin valuing Thor's mother. He's genocidal, arrogant, a sociopathic prick and not even his godhood saves him here because Thor is a genuinely nice, benevolent guy, while Odin is admittedly a completely tyrant and villain who can't hols a candle to how bad Loki really is. Nothing good to speak of. Pass.

Conclusion?

And Loki is a yes.

[tup] for Loki.

So when coming back from a vacation in Thailand, I saw the film Happy Death Day on a plane ride. I checked if there was any discussion on it, and saw that both villains were deemed as not being heinous enough to count. (There was only one post reffering to the candidate I'm proposing though, simply saying from what we see, he's not heinous enough) I can see that being the case for the Big Bad, but for the other villain...I can’t really agree with that claim.

What’s the work?

Happy Death Day is about Alpha Bitch college student, Teresa “Tree” Gelbman, finding herself stuck in a timeloop where she repeatedly relives her birthday, where every day, she finds herself killed by a mysterious attacker in a creepy baby mask. She makes many failed attempts to find out who the identity of her murderer is as well as to stop herself from being killed. Around the point where she gave up and started to accept her fate, she as well as her growing love interest Carter see a news report, leading her to come to the conclusion about who the murderer is.

Who is he? What does he do?

John Tombs (or Joseph Tombs? For some reason wikipedia and the tv tropes page calls him Joseph, but when I watched the movie he was clearly called John so…*shrugs*) is a sadistic Serial Killer who’s been on the run for several months prior to the story for the murder of six women (it’s not really offscreen villainy since as this is being reported, we see the profiles of the victims). Tombs boasts that he’s responsible for over a dozen other victims that have disappeared, having murdered and buried them all around the Arizona desert. During a confrontation with the police, he gets shot in the shoulder and is taken into the hospital for treatment, but not before he kills a cop.

The Big Bad Lori, Tree’s room mate who’s trying to kill Tree because the college professor Lori has the hots for is into Tree instead, goes to Tombs’ hospital room (she has easy access due to working there), and gives him a spare of the same costume she wears whenever she kills Tree, and cut his binds allowing him to escape in the future.

In the third to final timeloop, when Tree goes to the hospital warning the workers about how he’ll escape and goes to his room with a fire axe, only to find that Tombs already escaped and murdered a security guard. He shoots the axe out of Tree’s hands, and then shoots the secretary at the hospital to death before chasing down Tree to the elevators. He’s about to kill her, but then Carter tackles him to the ground. John overpowers Carter and smirks at Tree as he snaps Carter’s neck. He then gleefully watches as Tree commits suicide when he chases her down (she previously knocked Tombs out with a crowbar and had the opportunity to kill Tombs, but decides to restart the loop so that Carter can be saved as well)

In the penultimate loop, when Tree confronts Tombs in his hospital bed and tries to shoot him dead with the security guards gun, she finds out that the safety was turned on. Tombs attacks her, takes the knife she brought, and is about to slit her throat but changes his mind and starts rubbing it on her cheek making it clear he’s going to torture her to death (though he changes his mind again when she attacks him while he was distracted and says he’ll just kill her quickly later). Due to a blackout that Tree timed as it happened every loop, she grabs the gun back while Tomb was taken aback from the darkness, turns the safety off, and shoots him dead.

Freudian Excuse? Any other mitigating factors?

Nope.

Heinous by the standards of the story?

The only other villain is Lori, whose body count isn’t anywhere near the size of Tombs (though releasing him to continue his killings just to cover her tracks did make me consider proposing her as well for a little while). The only people she kills in all the loops combined are Tree, a guy called Nick, and POSSIBLY the college professor she had the hots for and a police man. There was a previous loop where the masked killer was in the hospital where Tree was killed via car explosion, but it could have been either Lori or Tombs. (Probably the former though since Tombs took off his mask to let Tree know who he was while the killer in that loop didn't when Tree demanded it)

Like I said before, his previous victims isn’t really offscreen villainy since pictures of the known victims he’s killed are shown in the movie to establish the pattern. Even if the claim about him murdering over a dozen other victims isn’t true, in one loop alone he gets a shown body count in the double digits, easily the largest in the film. Add in snapping somebody’s neck just to hurt somebody else, and trying to torture the protagonist to death, and we get somebody who leaves a pretty heavy mark for somebody who’s just a pawn of the Big Bad.

Final Thoughts? [tup]

Yeah, I agree with that The Albino's writeup should be expanded. Because at the moment, the only thing I can understand is that he is a prisoner who rapes one person, not that he is a Serial Rapist.

The writeup doesn't focus on his victims, which it should.
