Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'm not sure on Julia. Does she care about his boss. Your response is that her species is Always Chaotic Evil which uh isn't really a good counterargument ?

[up]I believe it's the same case as Bellatrix with Lord Voldemort. And her species had actually dominated and destroyed many planets, including their birth one and Mars. They are like parasites (someone like the cat-like aliens of Kid Vs Kat, that invade, dominate, then destroy the planet).

Gonna hang off on Julia until Mir’s concerns are addressed. Ravok and I are taking another look at the original Code Geass anime. Got at least one, maybe two new keepers coming but holy fuck, the heinous standard practically means soldier-level monsters are committing crimes you’d see Big Bad Gundam CMs do.

Caio this is getting annoying. You need to elaborate more on the agency other than just “they have it”. Address the concerns or I’m not voting on her.

[up] ....going to guess right off the bat one of the keepers is VV. Not sure about any others in the anime itself since I don't remember anyone else low tier particuarly heinous, but your mention of a "soldier-level CM" indicates another Luciano.

I don't know if it is enough, but they act like normal human, including impersonathing them. Julia herself could stole the identity and pass as the true doctor, showing they have intelligence. Sorry, I don't know how to describe moral agency like you want.

In that video, she says: "I did the GOOD and the Evil, the evil and the good, like all the creatures did."

In another moment, the true leader of the repitilians (that is not Julia) says they want to wipe out humans because humans destroy the enviromnent.

The videos are in portuguese, because that's a brazillian soap opera.

Huh, I've actually watched quite a bit of Os Mutantes when I was a kid, it's a major Guilty Pleasure of mine.

With the EP's information in mind, I'm leaning [tup] on Julia. I clearly remember that big portions of the trilogy were told from her perspective, she's "human" enough to make me confident that agency is not an issue, at least for now.

She is a jingoist that despises human and get angry when her commander is killed by one of them, since she sees the human as enemies. About her care, it would be a disqualifying factor, but I will leave you to decide if it is actually disqualifying or if is something like the Bellatrix's loyalty to Voldemort (in Harry Potter, there's a scene, at least in the movie, in which she offers to help Voldemort).

Just gonna stay out of the Julia situation for now and jump in with the next All-Star Western, although this time, we're going back to the beginning. At first, we follow Jonah stuck in Gotham following various bounties, and soon enough we meet our first Arc Villain, who is much worse than he appears on first glance.

Who is Thurston Moody? What does he do?

Thurston Moody is the director of sanitation for Gotham City - and is secretly a member of the Court of Owls, so we already know the kind of person he is. He is introduced asking Jonah to find his lost son, offering a handsome reward for his return - like a standup guy, right? Except the investigation leads to Jonah stumbling on an orphan boy who similarly went missing several years ago, found recently having clearly been living in the sewer for that time. The boy himself is left physically and mentally incapable, but Jonah and Amadeus Arkham manage to figure out where the kid was - an entire child slavery ring happening right underground, essentially creating a base for the Court of Owls.

After a series of misadventures, Jonah interrogates one of the soldiers of the operation who reveals that they wouldn't have taken Moody's kid - Thurston Moody is in charge of the entire operation, specifically targeting poorer children because he knew the police wouldn't bother to look for them. He's been doing this for years to create this base - the people who actually kidnapped his kid were a pair of parents who had their own son captured and kidnapped Moody's kid because he knew it would get proper attention.

Of course, Moody being a cowardly bastard, by the time the son is recovered, he's already fucked off to New Orleans after lying to his wife about where he was going or any way of knowing that his son was alright - knowing that the Court would come after him for his mistakes made him get out of town as fast as possible, ostensibly to protect their interests but clearly to save their sorry ass. However, despite Jonah not being able to find him for a while, the Talon gets there first, and after a pitiful display of begging for his life, the Talon slits his throat.

Any mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?

The first one where there might be an issue, but ultimately I don't think it's disqualifying. Moody has a son, and he gets involved in the plot in the first place because the son goes missing and he hires Jonah to find him. However, it's made very clear that when the chips are truly down, Moody only cares about himself. Not only does he not participate in the search himself in any meaningful capacity, but as soon as his own child slave operation gets exposed and the Court of Owls comes after him, he peaces the fuck out of town without bothering to see if his son ever made it home. He even lies to his wife about where he's going. Ultimately, he then dies without ever mentioning his son again, and there are a few hints that the relationship was loveless to begin with - aside from the fact that he asks for Jonah's help with the same amount of energy as I would ask for help finding a lost toothbrush, when Jonah tells the son that his father is a monster, the son believes him immediately and declares that he hates his father and everything he is (compare to his wife who is in tearful denial). Ultimately, beyond the token effort of getting other people to look for him, Moody never makes any real attempt to show that he cares about his son, and ultimately values his own life more once the Court comes knocking and he flees without caring whether or not he's alright.

Is he heinous enough?

Child slaves, people. We're talking a year-long operation of child slaves, with poorer children specifically being chosen because the police wouldn't look for them. By the time one of the children is found, he is mentally and physically incapable of doing pretty much anything and dies within a day. This dude is fucked up.

Final verdict?

And another yes - what about you?

Yes to Thurston and I'll just give a hint for the Geass stuff and say it's not going to be a member of the royal family. The only who you can argue doesn't love at least one other family member, including V.V. sadly, is Schneizel and his massive ego and narcissism aside, is still a Well-Intentioned Extremist who has moments indicating he's got standards, as well as being genuinely Affably Evil and he's strongly indicated to have at least a Villainous Friendship with Kanon, who he doesn't mind acting as his conscience.
