Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Im sorry if this is against protocol or come off as rude but can somebody PLEASE respond to one of my posts? It's been almost a week since I was suspended and I can't get a single response as to WHY I was suspended. I wouldn't be as frustrated if somebody who just posted here didn't get a timelier response to his post.

I'm sorry for being frustrated but I've wanted to continue editing pages and I haven't received any communication about what got me suspended beyond what I've had to guess at I have no idea how this works anymore.

Thank you.

~Phyrexian Ajani 95 [1]

Hi. You have gotten several notifiers for Crosswicking, which you seem to know how to do. So please keep that habit up. The bigger issue is that you've responded rather rudely to some of those notifiers. That's frowned upon. No matter how wrong you think the sender is or how justified you think your anger is, it's not okay to snap at someone. If you believe they're mistaken or breaking rules themselves, you can respond politely. Okay?

~Rm 74 [2] [3] [4]

Good. That's a pretty substantial set of query posts and answers demonstrating you can identify issues and answer the questions of others.

A "cleanup thread" is one of our project threads, Long Term/Perpetual and Short Term. Cleanup also occurs after a decision is made to a trope at the Trope Repair Shop.

The Complete Monster Cleanup thread counts as a cleanup thread, too, but we would like you to check out the other threads in those forums to review problematic entries and other wiki issues, and be able to contribute. For example, someone on the project thread dedicated to fixing complaining is asking if a particular entry is phrased to negatively, or is asking how an entry may be rewritten. Many cleanup threads in Short-Term and Long-Term can use additional help.

Does that make sense?

~Oreo Cookie 11 [5]

And the communication and consensus via that communication happens before any undoing/redoing of an entry is made. You may go.

~Phantomskyler [6] [7] +2

A little more patience would be appreciated. We're going roughly in post order except a handful of cases that are more pressing. You were not skipped.

Indeed you were suspended for indentation issues, and that was an Edit War, since you're putting a contested entry back. And yes, you should minimize adding things to the wiki that take sides in controversial issues or are phrased to start a fight. According to Edit War, if an entry of yours is changed or deleted, and you disagree and want to revert the change, what are some avenues you can take to avoid an edit war?

I legitimately did not think you suspended people for improper usage of indention.
Repeated bad troping practices get you suspended so you can learn how not to make those mistakes before you can edit again. Let's see if you understand how to indent things. Here's an entry on another YMMV for you to correct. Please post the revision here.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Almost two years before the teaser trailer was released, DeviantArt member LocalSpaghetto drew a picture of Soldier: 76 in a Vault jumpsuit.
    • Due to the many similarities between the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises (aside from them sharing the same developer), many fans have jokingly suggested over the years various ways for dragons and other supernatural elements to show up in the Wasteland. This Prequel game introduces to the franchise the "Scorchbeasts," ferocious mutated bats the size of small business jets that can unleash sonic blasts from their mouths. So apparently, dragons have already existed in the Wasteland this entire time!
      • This one got even more hilarious when a programmer on Twitter dug into the game and discovered that the Scorchbeasts' coding was almost entirely recycled from Skyrim's dragons, with most of the files not even being renamed. Dragons were shoehorned into the Fallout universe with the Serial Numbers Filed Off!
    • Ever since Fallout Online was shut down by Interplay, rumors about a possible MMO game set in the far future of the Fallout universe have circulated. Lo and behold, Bethesda announced at the E3 2018 Fallout 76, which is a multiplayer RPG taking place before the entire main series.

~Laggamer20xx [8]

You have multiple suspensions in place for various idiotic and spammy acts. If people tell you to stop doing a problematic thing, you should stop doing the problematic thing. Please post and edit constructively. Since you promise you will behave better, we'll hold you to it. Your suspension is released.

~Andy LA [9]

Removing a bit that's incorrect or misplaced is a valid move. But let's assume that both entries are good examples of Fashion-Victim Villain. Can you post the revised entry with correct indentation? Here's the explanation of the indentation policy if you need it. Hint: even ignoring the presence of the quoted line, there should not be a lone level 2 bullet (**) here. Second hint: it does need to be rephrased so bullet points do not reference each other.

  • Who could forget Brainiac's attire from the various Super Friends series: A pink-purple polo shirt with white collar, and just a pair of black briefs? What were they thinking? This was hilariously lampshaded in a classic Cartoon Network ad bumper:
"Look, I just want some pants. A decent pair of PANTS!"
    • Toyman also looked pretty ridiculous, with a three-pronged mask and a suit with pointy shoulders curving up.

@ Tabs Fair enough. I feel like it's a case of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' with some pages, though; the thing that set me off in that case was that the work was listed on a trope page, but not on the work page. I cross-wicked it and got a notification demanding I crosswick it anyway.

Regardless, I was out of line, won't happen again.

Yes it does. I'll do the cleanup threads as well but can you answer me how long more will the edit suspension last for me and how much time do I have for the tasks so that you guys can decide that I can edit again. Because with this I've already learnt my lesson for past one year now (which is not to add out of context false examples and Edit warring which I realise was stupid of me now and I should've thought of it earlier) and I want to edit again (especially to improve some of my edits too). Just this time around please give me a clear answer and not a vague one because I feel like what if the suspension will last another year even if I do the tasks like you said. Just tell me which date next will it be decided if I can edit again once I show you more of my forum works

~Worst Otaku Ever appeal

That's better. It's important to remember that phrasing like "is one", "does this", etcetera isn't context. When in doubt, take things to the discussion venues you had previously talked about here rather than try to add a policy-contested edit back in, as this was correctly construed as edit warring despite your intention.

Your suspension is released.

~MJ Trooper appeal

Indeed. Make sure to obtain consensus before redoing your edit. Your suspension is released.

~Filip 04 appeal

Your suspension is released, but reiterating that this may be your last chance on the forums.

~Tropers/twofacetoo appeal

You claim your actions were not justified, but continue to intepret others' interactions towards you in bad faith, such as considering them "hostile" and using phrasing like "outright making stuff up". (In case it was not clear: we can read your private messages. "Lashing out" is a fair description for your responses to the notifiers.)

I genuinely have no idea what I'm supposed to do.

We want you to understand and accept that nothing the other people sent you or did was out of the ordinary on this site. Removing your edit isn't a personal attack. Notifiers, private messages, forum cleanup threads, the various administrivia pages etcetera are not "blunt", "hostile", insulting your intelligence, or [gestures to everything you wrote]. These things are, actually, a fairly reliable system that allows tropers to neutrally inform others of mistakes, and for the staff to keep track of errors. Can they abused? Yes, but that did not happen here. Will we overhaul this system because you're taking it all too personally? Nope.

So, with all of that, we'll ask you again — if you are released, do you think you can conduct yourself in a respectable manner the next time you are informed of errors? Because if you truly think the answer is 'no', then you can remain suspended.

~Tropers/surgoshan appeal

That's better (no lone second or third bullets), but note that Example Indentation advises each work be on its own bullet.

On a trope page, you will sometimes run into a situation where you want to list multiple examples from the same media or series. Don't list one example and then indent the others under it. Instead, use:

  • Alice and Bob:
    • In episode 2, this trope occurs when...
    • In episode 21, this trope occurs when...

Or:

  • Alice and Bob Trilogy:
    • In Alice Alone, the trope is seen...
    • In Bob Meets Alice, we see the trope when...

That's applicable to the first example, where it seems that "Mutsuko Sakura" is an example only/primarily from the second work.

One way...

  • Major: Kaoru Shimizu is generally a very sweet and kind girl, but her tsun side really flares up when she's around Goro. As the series advances, and especially after they finally begin dating each other her dere side takes over.
  • Major 2nd: Mutsuko Sakura, who is also a dere type by default, but sometimes Daigo gets on her nerves by being clueless to her feelings and insensitive.

Or if there's an overarching franchise page...

  • Major
    • Major: Kaoru Shimizu is generally a very sweet and kind girl, but her tsun side really flares up when she's around Goro. As the series advances, and especially after they finally begin dating each other her dere side takes over.
    • Major 2nd: Mutsuko Sakura, who is also a dere type by default, but sometimes Daigo gets on her nerves by being clueless to her feelings and insensitive.

Does that make sense? Any other questions about Example Indentation?

~Tropers/DRCEQ appeal

I CAN, but if that's the case, then I don't understand what the point of any of this was.

This all started because I was asked what I had to say for myself. I had something to say, only to be told it didn't matter and that I was in the wrong regardless of what I had to say about it. I assumed I was being given a chance to debate the situation, give my side of the story, and come to some kind of understanding on the matter. There's a LOT that I wasn't aware of at the start of this which, through these posts, I've only just started to learn about. For example, it was NOT clear to me that notifiers were automated messages sent word-for-word the same to every user. I was under the impression that, being that they were sent directly from individual users, they were personally written for each instance, hence the belief that users were CHOOSING to speak bluntly and coldly over minor errors. I've had an account on this site for several years, and the most I've ever used it for is reading pages and adding entries, I'm VERY unfamiliar with how the actual systems function.

Hell, even my point about 'what to do upon receiving hostile messages' wasn't an accusation, it was to point out that if that WERE ever the case, I wouldn't know what to do about it, and nobody had felt the need to advise me when I mentioned it. No 'if that is the case, the correct process is...' My point there was, if I DID feel the messages I'd received were hostile or threatening, what should I have done about it to have them looked into properly? Is there a report button that I just cannot see? Do I DM a moderator about it? I'm STILL not aware of what to do in this matter should I ever find myself in it, hence why I brought it up.

This is the first time I've ever really broken a rule on this site, I am not exactly well-versed in the processes and systems through which one is meant to go in order to rectify their mistake. This being a public forum gave me the impression it was a place to speak up and 'make a case' as it were, especially after being invited to do so in the first reply made to myself, only to be told at every turn that the reasons behind my actions don't matter at all. If that's the case, then fine, I'm happy to apologise for my mistake, but that was not in any way clear to me from the start of all of this. If it had been we could've avoided all of this.

I got upset at other users because I was misinterpreting what was being done, it was a fault on my side through my lack of awareness and lack of emotional restraint. I accept that and I apologise for my harsh language towards other users who were only trying to help. In the future I will try to remain in better control of my emotional state and will not make the error again of believing notifiers to be personally-written messages.

PS: if you CAN read my messages, then you can see I did NOT 'lash out' at the user who deleted my edit in 2022, which is what I was contesting as being made-up. I questioned and argued it, and eventually did nothing more beyond get a little snide when I pointed out it wasn't even worth arguing about anymore since the edit was ALREADY deleted, but that was it. If I 'lashed out' to that user at all, then it was purely through the words 'fine, whatever' and nothing more, and calling that 'lashing out' feels a bit extreme.

Sure I took some artistic license with the apocalyptic imagery to fit with the page theme, but did I actually say anything untrue? Lockdowns happened, school and business closings happened, vaccine mandates happened, 24/7 news coverage happened, protests turning into riots and anarchy happened... That these things happened is not controversial, and it follows the general page narrative of sudden and drastic changes to societal norms leading into violence. Now, if one wanted to debate the reasons for and effects of these events, we could go all day, but I purposely tried not to pass judgment one way or the other to avoid challenging whatever notions people may already have. So yes, the intent was to be factual and neutral, with a wrapper of humorous hyperbole. If you instead read it as more offensive than amusing, then perhaps I missed the mark on that. You're welcome to edit or delete it; this site is a collaborative effort, after all, and I'm certainly not going to engage in an edit war over such things.

I'm still curious about this "pattern" you keep mentioning, though. You cherry-pick a handful of edits out of hundreds spanning many years and call it a pattern. Any sufficiently large dataset is bound to have outliers, and it's easy to find a pattern in something when you've already made a conclusion. So I'm not so sure I agree with you on that point. But you say you want a discussion, so let's discuss. What exactly is it that you're asking for?

If this is about the edit war on YMMV.Fallout 2024... yeah, my bad. I didn't assume that it'd count as an edit war, but what I did is basically textbook edit warring as outlined on the Administrivia.Edit War page. Since not knowing rules isn't an excuse, all I can say in my defense is that I honestly didn't mean to start shit and will take things to the Discussion page next time.

So, I used a bit too much of Zalgo in one of my post on Yack Fest. Got thumped because of it being too disruptive in it's formatting. I get it, it wasn't a great idea. I then wrote another post in toned-down Zalgo, thinking that it would get a pass since it didn't got beyond the post's limits and didn't seemed disruptive for me. Second thump and then suspension from posting. Seems like it wasn't a good idea either. I genuinly didn't do it to provoke the mods or ignore the rules, I genuinly thought it was acceptable in that format. Guess I'll have to not post in Zalgo text ever again from now on. Sorry. I had few cases like this happening to me since I've first joined this site, and I intend it to stay that way. I promise to be more careful from now on if I'm ever unsuspended.

So I was apparently suspended for grammar issues? I apologize, though I think it's a little bit harder to decisively fix this specific issue. I guess the best thing I can do is consciously remind myself to be more deliberate with my edits going forward and take care to properly follow the wiki's standard.
