Apparently no one made this yet and the anime's second season is out, so I might as well...

The Dangers in My Heart is the story of a reclusive middle school boy, Kyotaro Ichikawa, who "hides dark impulses and fantasizes about the day where he ends his classmates peaceful, ignorant lives…."

Except not really; He’s a socially awkward, closeted chuunibyou, and Tsundere bookworm with a Hidden Heart of Gold who frequently crosses paths with Anna Yamada; his 5.7 foot tall, pretty, somewhat air-headed goofball of a classmate who works part-time as a model/actress and shares the library with him to eat snacks in private. This is a sweetness-inducing romcom about two dorks becoming closer to each other and growing the better for it as people.

As of this post there are 136 chapters; one comes out every two weeks on Tuesdays (Or practically Monday night. English translations come out on Thursdays or Fridays).

The anime is streaming on HIDIVE.

Let me add (a spoilered) comment about the most recent manga chapter (136): While obviously Yamada being sick takes precendent over everything, I hope there is still time on th trip to get an answer to the mystery of the condom. I got cookies bet on Chii bringing it thinking it was candy (or something like that), and I must know if I'm right or wrong. tongue

I tried reading it, but quickly gave it up. Apparently Norio Sakurai forgot how to draw teenagers, because their proportions are just bizarre (and I don't mean their busts).

Also, compared to Mitsudomoe, I didn't find it particularly funny or outrageous. I've been meaning to give the manga another shot one day, but I never got around to it.

[up] [up] I don't think Kobayashi is that dense, but i'd be fine being wrong. It's probably gonna come up at the last second later on and be cliffhanger. Wonder if it's still in one of Yamada's pockets.

[up] Not far. A few chapters, maybe.

At the beginning of Mitsudomoe, Sakurai clearly intended the school teacher Yabe (who looks similar to Kyotaro, except with less weird proportions) to be the main character, having to juggle dealing with the Marui triplets while trying to romance the school nurse Aiko (who looks similar to Anna, except with less weird proportions). But Sakurai quickly abandoned that and made the Marui triplets the main characters instead, because watching these three utterly bizarre sixth-graders leave a trail of destruction and embarrassment in their wake was much more entertaining.

I feel like Dangers in My Heart is a twist on her original idea for Mitsudomoe, but it falls into the same trap for me — it's just not as interesting as something like watching the Marui triplets make an utter mess of everything.

Well in that case, the arts’ improved a lot since then. Amongst other things.

I haven’t read Mitsudomoe, but I heard the humor was even raunchier.

[up] Mitsudomoe is very raunchy, but it always frames things for comedy rather than for titillation. There's a lot of Comedic Underwear Exposure, but it's always done so the reader can't see anything explicit. It's a Gross-Out Show to boot. One of the very first chapters is about the dumb-as-rocks school nurse spilling a bunch of urine samples everywhere, then confusing them for eyedrops, coffee creamer, etc.

I might check out Dangers again, but something tells me it's a little too, err, grounded to do something like that.

[up] I feel that if you want to look at this series solely expecting a comedy, you are going to miss part of what makes this series special. Because, while it's funny (very funny in my personal opinion), it's the charming and nounced way (most) characters in this series are written that allowed Boku Yaiba to capture the hearts of many, win multiple awards as well as being banned in big a online-contest about "Mangas we want to see become an anime", because it won top places (and at least once no. 1) 3-years in a row.

[up] I understand why people might like it. But Mitsudomoe, which is full of loud, over the top weirdos who have no nuance whatsoever, captured my attention to the point I've read all the scanlated chapters (like 250) so far, whereas Dangers in My Heart just left me wanting to read Mitsudomoe again.

[up] Oh, have they translated more chapters? Years ago when I read Mitsudomoe there were 100+ (don't remember exactly and is one of those old series in my list with ??? chapters, since the exact one was lost with my old computer), but I stopped reading since there were missing chapters, and then I just forgot to keep checking. Similar situation but with less chapters with Noroi's robot girls series.

Anyways, I also found Mitsudomoe hilarious (as well as Rororro), but I think Boku Yaiba is truly great at what it does, and I was extremely happy when the anime was announced.

[up] Apparently it's up to chapter 172, unbroken. And then a spotty collection of chapters after that, up to 248, and then finally a single random chapter from volume 17, 301.

IIRC, the one guy doing the English scans, FloatingSunfish, had financial issues, so his output is pretty irregular now. He has a blog, SunfishScans, where he talks about it. It looks like Mexican scans are filling in some of the gaps, though. While running foreign scans through Google Translate isn't ideal ... sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

[up] All right, time to make use of being born in the land of the Taco! cool Though I should probably re-read the whole thing again, because checking a couple chapters, I don't remember if I haven't read them or just forgot.

I didn't know this until now, but apparently Yuka Iguchi played the backstabbing member of Shinya Satou's Hopeless Squad in Mitsudomoe. And now, in Dangers in My heart, it seems she's playing a character who is (to quote the character page) "known for eagerly celebrating couples". Well, that's certainly a 180 for Yuka-chan!

Also, Aki Toyosaki voiced Yuki Yoshioka ("Could it be ... l-l-love?!") and in Dangers in my Heart she's now voicing a character who looks like a grown-up Yuki — minus the enormous eyebrows. I wonder if that was an intentional Actor Allusion.

I was one of those who got nervous when the first Key Visual for the first season was released and looked a little off, but damn if it didn't feel good to be proven wrong about my doubts. First season was an overall good adaption and great anime romcom, and the first ep of S2 (probably a delayed second cour, but who cares) looked good. OP is very nice, and ED reveals we will be getting to some really big moments In short, looking quite promising this.

Y'know, thinking about it, I earnestly wonder if this series was originally meant to star an older Hitoha Marui, before Sakurai genderswapped her to Kyotaro. That would explain an awful lot, wouldn't it?

Thus new season is currently the highest rated new show on MAL this spring season, score sitting at 8.70. Quite the little comeback, seeing as the first season started out under 7 after its first episode.

Yoshimasa Hosoya (Reiner Braun) is apparently voicing Yamada’s dad. I think I can hear it.

[up] Even if he didnt have any lines this ep, Ichikawa calling him a Kyojin while Sawano-inspired music plays in the background was a great and fitting choice for his introduction.

S2E2: Ichikawa visiting Yamada’s place goes about as well as you’d expect. It’s nice that Yamada got to air out her insecurities.

[up][up]Somehow, against all reasoning, the Boss music went over my ears. Gotta rewatch.

I’m glad they still have the phone gag at the end; Ichikawa swearing never to come back to the apartment until Yamada messages him to do just that; “Sure” indeed.

Chapter 137: Figured a fever would last more than a day, but ah well.

When I first saw Ichikawa cut Nico off of Yamada's phonecall, I thought there was a look of minor annoyance. Upon re-reading it, I found it amusing to see to it was just apathy. Dude did not give a fuck.

I wonder if his goal to keep Yamada from saying "i'm sorry" will result in a Shut Up Kiss.

[up][up] And why should he care or feel sorry for her, seeing what she was planning for Yamada in the house? Yeah, let her spaz a little, it's karma.

And while this episode was a little bit of a step down in the looks department, Yamada's dad going from frightening GF's Scary Father to cute dork who wants to help cooking and play games was great. Wonder when Bayashiko will realize what's up...

[up] True. Just appreciating a blunt Ichikawa moment.

From the looks of it, not even on this trip. Even when she’s just now starting to pick something up. Not sure why they’re bothering to keep a secret from her now.
