Marvel Comics cleanup and maintenance

Go To

A thread offering assistance and support for tropers covering Marvel's many, many stories and characters.

This includes the shared Marvel Universe, but not the cultural Disney juggernaut known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of our aims is to disentangle tropes and characters from the MCU adaptations from pages about their source material.

This scope does cover Marvel comic, manga and webcomic stories, characters and tropes that are unconnected to that shared Marvel Universe - e.g. their licensed Star Wars, Alien and Predator stories.

As of September 2021, there were about 27,000 Marvel comics published across 4,900 or so different series. They started publishing in the 1940s as Timely Comics, then became Atlas Comics and - eventually - Marvel. As a consequence, Marvel have a lot of Comic Book and Characters pages on the site (and have recently started publishing Webcomics as well).

The sheer scale of this means that there's so much material (with dozens of new comics added each week) that no one troper is likely to own or read all of it - especially as there are big gaps in what's available digitally or reprinted (and licensed characters and legal issues mean that certain stories may never be reprinted at all).

And that can make troping their shared universe pretty tricky - even Marvel's own creative teams have been known to lose track now and then.

We've got tropers busily revising existing pages, while others add new information weekly as new comics are published. This thread's here to help with any queries that generates, to focus work on particular pages that could use improvement, and to help ensure that we tackle works page names and other aspects in a consistent way that makes sense to readers navigating between different Marvel-related pages (as well as following best practice for the wiki as a whole).

Feel free to post here to draw attention to relevant posts or threads elsewhere - e.g. if examples, images, captions and quotes, or spoiler policies for these pages are under discussion.
There are existing threads and standard guidelines for those topics (e.g. Image Pickin' has its own, very structured, process), and this shouldn't duplicate any of that - but tropers reading this thread may wish to vote or comment once they know about those discussions.
    ComicBook page guidance
  • If there's a consistent creative team, they should be named in the introduction. Ideally, include inkers and colorists as well as other artists.
  • The page image doesn't always have to be the first issue cover.
  • Pages for arcs, runs and events should include the relevant titles and issue numbers.
  • Pages should include start and end dates in the introduction
  • Links regarding particular characters (e.g. Wolverine) should go to their Characters page, not their ComicBook page.

    Character page guidance
  • As a rule, characters in Marvel Universe continuity only get one Character page profile, regardless of how many different series they appear in. However:
    • Alternate Universe and Bad Future variants may justify their own profile, and sometimes the same can be said for Split Personality scenarios.
    • It may be appropriate to add a character to a relevant Character page with an intro and a link to their full profile on another page (e.g. many villains have been major characters in several different series)
  • Creation of any new Character Specific Pages, and proposals to merge any of them back into other pages, should go via the Character Specific Pages cleanup thread, but it's worth posting here as well.
  • If you're splitting, merging or moving characters between different Character pages, it's worth checking with the Character Page Cleanup thread as well as posting here.

[up] I like it. Also reminded me to add the one-shot the the page, so I did.

Also, no problem with the move for me.

Shouldn't the move be by date? Other than that I have no objection.

Okay we need to talk about Avengers Arena and Avengers Undercover as they have a lot of folders for characters that are on other pages. I honestly think we should move all of them and cut the pages. We can put Braddock Academy in Captain Britain’s page and discuss others

Oh and Prodigy has a two folders as well, one in Young Avengers and one in New X-Men: Academy X

[up]I thought I fixed prodigy already. Merge them into the new x-men page.

But yeah those two are a headache and a half. I agree with you, although atleast Avengers Arena should list the participants.

I’m fine with listing but I think we could put links in all those to other pages

Not sure if anyone's been following Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance - I think the crossover event ended this week or last week?

Just realised that there's absolutely no spoiler tagging on the page, including the twists and ending. I haven't actually read it yet, and probably will when it reaches MU, so haven't looked too closely or tried to fix it.

Now that a folder for the 2017 Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man has been added to The Spectacular Spider Man, I think the JJJ and Spider-Man cover could work.

Sorry for the double-post, but I'm kinda favouring the post where Peter's ripping his shirt open with the caption reading "This looks like a job for... Spider-Man!"

Why not have an image for each folder? Like Harley Quinn? Then we can use one from each series. Also I also like the open shirt one.

I honestly have no idea. But they are separate runs so it may be allowed.

So in that case we'd need to pick an image for each run...

ComicBook.Spider Man's now been split four ways due to the length of its trope list.

Looks like it needed it, but as it wasn't done via the usual route i've asked the too-long page thread if it looks ok.

Okay I’m mid way through fixing Avengers Arena and Undercover character pagers. I’m turning Arena into a link page and cutting Undercover. I’m moving the Braddock Arcade my kids to Captain Britain: Supporting Characters which is valid since there are a few more students than the ones in Arena. This is a daunting task so I’m taking my time.

I like them. Although I am partial to using an original series cover for the main page. But honestly i'm fine with the suggestions.

On a related note, should we get ready to launch the Spider-Man pages? or is there still work to be done? I think the Dan Slott run should be split between the 2014 and 2015 runs tbh.

OK it's done and—assuming there isn't any further feedback—ready to be launched.

[up] Was that not done with the Sandboxes?

I'm tempted to start a page for Peter Parker Spider Man now... but would that include the 1990 - 1998 Spider-Man comic it was unofficially renamed from (which incidentally has some of Spider-Man's most iconic and referenced covers) in #76?

Or should I just make a Spider Man 1990 page?

[up]Apparently they are two different runs, so I'd just make two separate pages to save everyone a headache.

On an unrelated note, I launched Sandboxes for Daredevil 1964 and Daredevil 1998. They were pretty well separated on the main Daredevil page but I wanted to split them off by run. They do need serious cleanup for word cruft though, as I just copied and pasted the intros. I'm going to go over them later but if anyone else wants to take a stab at it go ahead.

It's gonna be fun on the bun!

[up] I'm not 100% sure they are, since the Spider-Man comics following #76 are titled Peter Parker: Spider-Man, but Marvel's indica still considers them part of the Spider-Man run.

If they are, we should at least note that the Spider-Man run was retitled Peter Parker: Spider-Man, which was retained for the subsequent series despite that being considered the first volume thereof.

EDIT: OK... I got Peter Parker Spider Man started.

[up]The page is looking good.

On a related note, I've started going through The Amazing Spider-Man (J. Michael Straczynski) and The Amazing Spider-Man (Dan Slott), and the cleanup is going well. I think it is nearly time to launch The Amazing Spider-Man (1999), The Amazing Spider-Man (2014), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2015). Dan Slott's page may need to be split though. I also have made Sandboxes for Sins Past and The Other.

It's gonna be fun on the bun!

If you're looking for more Sins Past content, there's some in The Spectacular Spider Man... is what I'd say if I didn't just double-check and learn that it's a follow-up arc to Sins Past called Sins Remembered.

Not getting much time to look at the Marvel cleanup right now. I'll try to get my sandboxes done and launched by the weekend.

On a different note -

An image change for ComicBook.Iron Fist has been proposed on Image Pickin'. The thread is here.
