the Scamboli video i linked above has him looking for outrage, he didn't find it.

it seems like, unless you go to the episode discussions on MAL or reddit, you're not gonna find any big arguments about the series, because most people just don't care about it. or, if they make a post about it, dunk on it and move on

4x[up] Whether keeping their memories could have potential for a better story is one thing, but if there is a portrayal of rape I hate more than Karmic Rape, it's Rape as Redemption. The former is saying that someone deserved rape. The latter is saying that rape was good for them. It wouldn't even come close to addressing the fundamental issues of the story in the first place: The godawful portrayal of rape and the godawful glorification of the protagonist no matter what abhorrent things he does. Hell, if anything, it would only make these issues even worse!

Nothing personal against you, but I think the only salveagable part about your idea was "keeping their memories"-part. For whatever worth it may have, at least then the rape victims could still have their own agency and make their own choices, instead of being nothing more than the toys of the protagonist. This could have opened up more possibilities for how the "story" could progress if it had anything more than torture-/revenge porn to offer. Just... difficult to imagine anything worse than Rape as Redemption for one of those possibilities.

3x [up] Perhaps because controversy, by definition, is based on clashing opinions. There can't be a controversy if there is a consensus. The other controversial stories like Shield Hero and Goblin Slayer, for whatever flaws they may have, do leave more room for debate than Redo.

[up]Think thats it. No one really defends this as at least with those their are points to defend. While here uh not much...

It would ALWAYS be Rape as Redemption because the story decided to include rape in its revenge fantasy though. It's not about what I want, because it if was I'd do a lot more than suggest ways to justify raping people in vengeance, it's just something obvious to point out as a way to further criticize Redo of Healer's inane plotting.

If I were to keep the rape in the story I'd only put it on the MC, and not sexualize it anyway. I'd treat it as horrifying and serious as it should be treated. I'd have the MC get the fuck out of that kingdom as soon as he got the chance and eventually find somewhere with people that actually care about them. I'd have the MC have to contend with PTSD from surviving such trauma and portay an arc of them having to deal with it. Perhaps they go to a fantasy therapist regularly and eventually share their experiences with their new found friends.

I'd have the MC also have to contend with revenge fantasies but know its wrong and not go to that level. Have the MC get revenge by moving on, growing their legend, perhaps found a guild, and achieve great things. I'd have them leave their abusers in the dust and at odds if they ever meet up again. Have it be a story about surviving great trauma while also being a cathartic revenge story in a way.

That's just what I'd do though. I imagine their is many other good ways to right a abused healer seeks revenge story with the MC suffering from rape without doing any of the horrible shit they did here with it.

Hell I am sure their would be a market for a healer protagonist that wants to get back in assholes in non-violent ways. Considering how many horror stories I have heard from healer mains in MMORP Gs and hero shooters? There certainly is a untapped market.

The market they did go for here isn't really the best considering the sheer amount of creepy edgelord comments I have seen though.

forever removing any opportunity for Character Development that the rapes would enable.

- TV Tropes, 2020. [lol]

So where does the plot go after the second episode? I know in the manga things are paced a little differently, and he meets an elf girl he tricks... I think... into giving him oral sex. But, like, is he just trying to conquer the world or is it just a fantasy road trip of revenge and rape.

I usually hate isekai/main guy is awesome harem plots, but this one is so vulgar, for lack of a better word, I've got a Bile Fascination with it.

I tried to read the manga, but gave up after chapter... ten? Fifteen? Shortly after the ice wolf girl was introduced. Is the anime any better?

Ultimately, what really pissed me off was that I found the world genuinely interesting. An RPG Mechanics 'Verse with inborn class and max level has a lot of interesting things you can do with it, and the legendary classes with unlimited max levels (that they can spread to others to an extent) is also interesting. Sure the Intimate Healing of the level sharing is blatant fanservice, but meh. Overall, a good setting.

And then it's just a rape fantasy.

I read this way back before it got an Anime, but in order.

- Gets a demihuman slave and corrupts her to follow his lead (by getting her to drink his semen of course)

- Drugs and rapes that sword girl he healed in the first episode and she becomes part of his harem.

- The guy who's face he stole to get revenge on the heroine went back to the MC's village and burned it to the ground...while raping his childhood friend with the MC's face until she bit her tongue. MC revenges him.

- seduces a vampire loli into his harem.

- Crossdresses to lure the psycho lesbian out, gave her a penis and then had her raped to death by thugs hopped up on aphrodisiacs (she hates men btw, so thats the "karma")

- Lures the heroine's younger sister out and has said heroine violate her nether regions indulging in pet play while she's brainwashed. MC then erases her memories just like he did the heroine's and adds her to his harem.

- Right now he's hunting the gay pedophile who had his way with him.

[up]Yeah whomever made this sounds like a total incel if it really gets that worse from here.

The fact I saw seducing a vampire loli coming is kinda sad. This anime is so batshit its predictable. What happens to that lesbian character sounds like its straight out of a transphobe coupled with misogynist wet dream but is unsurprising sadly.

[up][up][up]He did not give the lesbian a penis(of her own). You're mixing her up with the guard captain guy, whom he gave breasts to. For shows like this which are pretty much Porn with Plot, it's generally easier to stomach if you gloss over everything with Broad Strokes(easy enough with the censored version). In fact, if you ignore the more fanservice-y parts, the world's hero/magic mechanics is definitely interesting as a setting, even serviceable for an RPG. I view it as I would almost any piece of written smut. Interesting, enjoy the jokes and lame puns(eg, MC's name and Atrocious Alias(es) are all plays on the "Cure" line of Final Fantasy spells, in keeping with the They Call Him Barkeep nature of the other hero names), don't think too hard about/discard the parts you don't like. But perhaps that's just me, I know a lot of folks can't think of fiction that way. I'm personally more perturbed by live-action crime re-enactments, than over-the-top animated antics, perhaps because the latter is usually easy to ignore/not care about if I don't like it, versus the former, which are "things that could/did actually happen". I'm sure some folks would use this post as reason to block/ignore/petition my banning, and that's their right, but I've said my piece.

I watched episode 4(I think?) to see what the buzz was about, laughed my ass off and left

This is straight-up "I can't believe it's not porn" territory and so I can't see it in any way other than a hentai plot. It's aight in that aspect; I've seen and played worse. Wouldn't check it out on my own time.

So I had to check out the thing on its TV Tropes page, and quite understandably, I noped out right away.

I am a revenge freak by nature. I love stories about Roaring Rampages of Revenge. Getting screwed over horribly is one of the biggest ways to get someone to want those responsible to pay. But there are all kinds of ways to get revenge on someone that don't involve...well, just about everything that our protagonist does in Redo of Healer. Such as killing them Kill Bill style, or arranging for things to end in misery for them Count of Monte Cristo style if killing them directly will just bring down the bad upon you. I especially love Humiliation Congas that our bad guy could have avoided had they not been such a selfish and despicable asshole, and that turns just about every bad thing they've done around on them in creative fashion. It's why, for example, I loved the trial scene from the anime version of The Rising Of The Shield Hero: the use of the Slave Crest on Malty served to turn Malty's love of lying against her in grand fashion, and because she wouldn't stop lying, more and more truth got revealed against her will, serving to destroy her entire case against Naofumi and clear his name after all the crap that her lies (especially the big one that started it all) had caused him.

But there are some ways of getting revenge that heroic and even antiheroic characters are just not going to do, and the reason that they don't do that shit is (from a Watsonian view) because they possess some kind of moral compass and (from a Doylist view) because many sane and moral audiences are not going to root for people who go and do that. My general go-to example for Shit That You Don't Do When You're Out For Vengeance is Revenge by Proxy — targeting innocent people whose only sin is being connected to the person you want revenge on, and that you're hurting for the sole purpose of hurting the target of your vengeance, marks you as a monster who's become no better/even worse than the one who's wronged you, even if the original crime involved it. I feel the same way about shit like rape used as revenge. Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil for a damn reason, and even if you've been raped yourself, that's no damn excuse to go and do it back to them, "eye for an eye" or not.

Pretty much. It's not surprising that having the protagonist be as unlikable as the villains would turn people away from the show.

Episode 5 was just released. Again, I cannot believe that this is an actual anime airing right now (and it seems to be pretty popular in Japan as well).

Also, it looks like next week's episode is gonna get to, well, an interesting part of the source material.

It's weird, because for years fans have been saying "harem shows are kinda uncomfortable, a Guilty Pleasure at best." And somehow producers interpreted that as "oh, you don't like bland nice guys with a harem? Here, have a LITERAL RAPIST with a harem!"
