My Little Pony: Cleanup Is Magic

Some of the season premiere/finale examples that were previously removed from UnexpectedlyDarkEpisode.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic have been re-added despite the commented-out note that they don't count, since they're expected to be darker. It doesn't seem to be a deliberate Edit War, since the examples were added by different tropers weeks apart.

Uh, no, what fans wanted was Grogar, a legacy villain who promised to be the most powerful, dangerous, and tricky enemy faced by Twilight and her friends yet. A real bona fide final exam boss. People were hyped to see what Grogar would do. The show was hyping what Grogar would do at the beginning of the season, and then proceeded to keep him back so the mystery only grew around him.

And then the writers just pulled the rug from under everyone's feet by revealing that Grogar was fake, and to add insult to injury, that he was Discord pulling a very poorly thought out final exam of his own that blew up in his face horribly.

And while the trio interacting sure was fun, they were basically a reprise of their earlier appearances as villains (except for Cozy, who had to be massively powered up to even be a serious threat), and the understanding was that Grogar was the real threat here.

So yeah, fans were upset. It doesn't really matter what the writers intended, the fans felt it was a bad twist that robbed them of a fun and interesting new villain they had been anticipating for months at that point.

Seems to be a case of people misunderstanding the trope, yes.

Discord being Grogar was a frustrating twist. We literally had someone who was so powerful they had to seal him away, and not just lock him in Hell, then the creators decided to make the KING of Draco in Leather Pants in MLP the phony Grogar, who then proceeds to be incredibly hypocritical and demand the trio be turned to stone. To say this pissed off me and several other fans was an understatement.

It's basically like bringing back Ridley from Metroid only to say "Tee hee, it's just Dark Samus in disguise." which to be fair they kinda did that with the SA-X. Or a more meta example Have Raven Beak from Dread not even BE a Chozo instead making him a lab experiment. It's an EXTREME Ass Pull.

To twist the knife further, Discord apparently ended up with Fluttershy which added insult to injury. Yeah, we've punished characters for less but the Greater-Scope Villain Double Agent gets a complete pardon and gets to be with the girl of his dreams. DiscoShy literally feels like a Crack Shipping after that.

Why do so many people seriously believe that Discord should've been turned back to stone? Even if it happened, people still would've gotten upset. I know it.

It would still suck regardless but it would also be way better than what we got currently. Maybe they just should not have made that twist in the first place. Then there would be no situation of "pick the lesser crappy outcome of the two", it is that simple.

Yeah, that twist really put Discord's character in a really awkward position. How many times can you betray the trust of your allies? Apparently as many as you want as long as you say you're sorry and date one of the protagonists.

This was added to YMMV.My Little Pony Equestria Girls citing "It was drama from like a couple of years ago".

• Fandom Rivalry: 4chan /mlp/ Anons entered one with Anons who only like friendship is magic; as it turns out there are Gen 4 fans who do not want to see anything about this spin-off or any other generation in the franchise and it caused a lot of problems like attempts to lie the site's moderators to ban EQG threads and posts, it all calmed when Twi-Mod revealed that he likes both shows and 4chan's mod team enjoy the fan art of EQG when browsing the board and they like the anger EQG causes on the purists, sometimes even allowing EQG shitposting because of the anger it caused.

Besides the lack of punctuation making me question it’s validity, I question if this is too brief/fringe part of the fandom/normal arguments for 4chan to say it's a worthwhile example.

Is the general FIM/EG debate worth mentioning in its place?

I think most people have softened up on Equestria girls over the years and while it's still dwarfed by Friendship is Magic in fans, it's at least got enough that the characters aren't just seen as teenage humanized versions of their pony selves at least the Human Seven aren't.

The biggest issue with Equestria Girls before was Flash but he is heavily Downplayed in favour of Timber Spruce and Zephyr Breeze in most later EG specials and the show.

Most fans here seem to be happy to enjoy both franchises, or at least are not actively opposed to the other fandom, so I'm not really seeing any rivalry on TV Tropes, at least.

Speaking as someone who hasn't really been "in" the MLP fandom for a long time proper, it does seem that any rivalry has dissipated.

Yes, I think it is safe to say that any such rivalries have died down with the fandom itself declining.

It may work as a historical example, but isn't this more Broken Base than Fandom Rivalry since it's about fans disagreeing over specific elements of the greater franchise? At the very least, EG fans are almost always FIM fans already.

Character Perception Evolution is out. I was planning to write up an entry for Celestia regarding her Ron the Death Eater portrayal falling out of favor staring 2014. Thoughts about that/points to go over? Likewise when did her infallible Physical Goddess portrayal fall out of favor?

CPE has a a five year waiting period so Discord would wait until July 29, 2023; five years after "A Matter of Principals" stated turning option against the character. Or does it not count as his prior appearances are still well received?

On that from YMMV.My Little Pony Equestria Girls:

• Fanon: A large portion of the fandom considers it as good as canon that Sunset was being groomed to be a princess by Celestia in the same manner as Twilight, and some go so far as to suggest Celestia was preparing Sunset to receive the Element of Magic. Related to this, it's also commonly accepted that Sunset knew of Twilight during their tutelage with Celestia but Twilight didn't know her, and that jealousy of Twilight played a role in Sunset's Start of Darkness. Details on these points vary, but the general ideas are very common in fan works.^note While the canon says nothing about Sunset knowing about the Element of Magic or Twilight during her time with Celestia, this Fanon would resolve several plot holes about Sunset backstory, personality, and motivations, which is why it's so widely accepted.

I was going to move the bolded part to Character Perception Evolution as such seems to have fallen out of favor since Sunset's redemption. I think because of the RTDE required of Celestia to replace Sunset as her focus before she fell and it's not as fun to write about jerk Sunset, any other reasons?

I think a prequel about how Sunset became a jerk under Celestia's tutelage would have been very interesting. Sadly the show never went that way.

As for that bolded part, I think that seemed implicit in the first movie, as Sunset sure seemed to know a lot about Twilight, and seemed to have somewhat of a personal grudge against her and her friends beyond just wanting to steal the crown, though that could also easily have been jealousy over Celestia replacing her. Latter episodes never really went into that, so that theory was never really developed or disproven, especially since pony Twilight was effectively written out of the series by the second movie.

So will the g5 comics count towards discord's character page?

It's never been specified if G5 is an AU where the mane six failed or if it is the G4 world after a war or something and extermination of non pony species. Maybe Tirek, Cozy and Chrysalis got out and turned everyone into Jerkasses?

One theory I've heard is that G5 is a timeline where the Mane 6 failed at... something. I don't buy it personally but the point is, yeah, G5 is sort of in ambiguous territory timeline wise.

No species are going to be exterminated. This is not that kind of show, folks.

Unless you count the Pinkie clones, I guess.

The extermination theory is irrelevant, though. The point is just that G5 is so weird in terms of the lore that people feel the need to justify it as an AU, just because we have no idea how any of these changes took place (or why the night and day cycle still happens, where the wendigos went, where all the other creatures went, etc). We can't fit it cleanly into the timeline yet until we have more information, otherwise it's speculation.

Question has anyone been reading the g5 idw issues and if so do they wanna start making a page on it?
